Writers on Wednesday: Kim Harrington, author of CLARITY

One of my favorite authors, Kim Harrington, agreed to drop by this week and talk about her writing journey.  If you haven’t read her CLARITY books, fix that!  Kim weaves paranormal mystery with contemporary YA and MG stories that are impossible to put down.  I’m so excited to introduce her to you: enjoy!

When did you decide you were a writer?

I’ve wanted to be a writer since I could hold a pencil. I wrote stories in grade school. It’s always been my dream. It just took a while to come true. A long while. ;) But I had a hard time calling myself a writer until I held my first book in my hand. It just didn’t seem real to me until then, even though I’d been writing for years.

What inspired you to write the Clarity books?

I wanted to write about a family of freaks—a family that’s weird, quirky, funny, and full of love for each other. Plus dead bodies, because that’s how I roll. ;)

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned on your path as a writer? What advice do you have for other writers?

The most important thing I’ve learned is that everyone has their own path and I shouldn’t waste my time comparing paths because that’s the one-way road to crazyville. When my son was little and he’d get upset because of something another child was doing, I’d say, “Focus on yourself.” And that’s good advice for writers, too. Don’t worry about who’s getting what book deal and who got what blurb and who got mentioned where. Focus on your own work and improving your craft. The other stuff will make you crazy because you have no control over it.

Can you give us an idea or sneak peek of your upcoming project, or a project you WANT to write?

[image error] My next book comes out January 1st and I’m so excited for people to read it! THE DEAD AND BURIED is a supernatural mystery about a teenage girl who discovers that the house her family just moved into is haunted, and she must solve the mystery of the ghost girl’s death. I’m really excited about it. It’s another murder mystery and of course there’s a bit of romance in it, but this one is also a ghost story. I’ve always loved spooky books and had a great time writing this one.

Prelude to Madness Blog Tour and Giveaway!

I’m thrilled to bring you a character interview with Marge, one of the demon slaying characters in Noree Cosper’s upcoming release, A Prescription for Delirium (Van Helsing Organization #1). Marge is sassy, so watch out!

*Marge sits, tied to a high-backed, wooden chairs. She glares around the room, mumbling under her breath.*

Gabby from offstage: Mio Dio! Just answer the questions!

*Marge glares at the interviewer* Fine

1. How did you first find out about demons?

A Voodoo psychic told me that a demon had a contract on my soul. At first I thought she was full of shit, but she let me see a few things. Made me see I didn’t have much time.

2. What do you think of Gabby and the Van Helsing Boys?

Annoying as hell, Eurotrash, but at least they’re not as ignorant as most people. Plus I need the Italian’s ability and connections.

3. If you could change one day of your life, what would it be and why?

*glares at the interviewer* Well, obviously it would be the day my mother decided to make a deal with a demon to get rid of my abusive dad. I was about to deal with him for good, but instead she decided not to drink herself unconscious.

4. Have you forgiven your parents for what they did?

I hope my dad is burning in Hell. And my mom is just stupid, and will continue to clean the local town out of their wine.

5. I’ll take that as a no.  Anything else you want us to know about you?

What? You want me to tell you my favorite color, that I like long walks on the beach? *snorts* How about you fucking untie me?

Okay, okay, calm down.  There.  Phew!  That was…something else.  Before you go, check out the awesome trailer for A Prescription for Delirium (Van Helsing Organization #1):

Plus, make sure you enter a Rafflecopter giveaway to win an ebook of A Prescription for Delirium

In a fun Christmas Romance, Cupid is charged with making certain an older couple gets the love they’ve been waiting for and a young woman who’s far too attracted to handsome men with sexy eyes finds her perfect match. And, he has to make it happen by Christmas.

In a spot somewhere between Heaven and Earth, Cupid tries to maneuver around the complications that threaten to wreck this romance as he struggles to overcome the forces of lust, jealousy and the events brought on by his nemeses—Life Management. He matched John and Eleanor some thirty years ago, but Life Management stepped in and fouled things up. Now they’re both single and back together again. But before Cupid can give them the happiness they deserve, he’s got to come up with some magic, a few miracles and a dog for John’s daughter.

If you’re a Debbie Macomber fan, you’re gonna love Cupid’s Christmas!

A wonderful feel-good story that I for one am better for having read it. I definitely recommend this book very highly…Goodreads review

CUPID’S CHRISTMAS

by Bette Lee Crosby

(Excerpt)

 Cupid

The problem with humans is they’re in love with love. Even worse, they’re determined to find it themselves. They stumble in and out of relationships that simply were never meant to be and then wonder why it didn’t work. Females are infinitely more complicated than males. Lindsay Gray for example, she’s dead-set on doing this her way and four times she’s ended up with the wrong male. She’s the kind of female who makes my job a nightmare.

Contrary to popular belief, love isn’t a result of me shooting an arrow into some human’s heart—that whole bit is a lot of hooey. I get my orders from Upstairs. The Boss gives me a rundown of matches then it’s my job to make sure the male and female get together. When things go wrong I’ve got to come up with a Plan B. Unfortunately Lindsay Gray has already used up B through E, I’m now working on Plan F and she’s dangerously close to being reclassified as Love-Challenged.

Her problem is she can’t tell love from lust. She sees a pair of heavy-lidded dark eyes, or a rippling muscle and thinks she’s in love. This started when she was only ten years old and caught sight of the boy who lived two doors down. The lad was twelve and wanted nothing to do with her, but that didn’t stop Lindsay from developing a preadolescent case of lovesickness. She followed that poor boy around like a faithful puppy until she saw him kissing Sara McLachlan. Once that happened she swore she’d never love again and she didn’t, until she was eleven.

Lindsay’s mistaken love more times than I can count, and every time it ended in a disaster. She can’t understand why this keeps happening to her, but the answer is obvious—humans with do-it-yourself determination are not equipped to identify true love. They inevitably mistake passion for love. Elizabeth Taylor is a perfect example. She refused to let me handle things, so eight times she got married and seven times she got divorced. One poor chap was killed in a plane crash before she had a chance to divorce him—that was not my doing, that unfortunate  event came from Life Management. Not one of those gents was included in Elizabeth’s plan which goes to prove what I’ve been saying.

But I’m digressing, so let me get back to the subject at hand.

One of the advantages of this job is my ability to see the future and I can tell you Lindsay’s got a lot of problems ahead of her. Problems far worse than her bad boyfriend choices. Most of those problems are coming from the guy over in Life Management. Me, I’m a lovable fellow. But Life Management—well suffice it to say he handles things like car crashes, bankruptcies and heart attacks.

Right now my primary assignment isn’t Lindsay—it’s her father and Eleanor Barrow. But if I don’t step in and take control of Lindsay’s life, she’ll ruin theirs. Eleanor and John deserve better, they’ve been waiting a long time.

This isn’t the first time for Eleanor and John Gray, they were a perfect match back in high school. If Eleanor had gone to Penn State instead of Kentucky, she and John would have had four daughters and a lifetime of happiness. I set up that first match, but once she left the North East, she was out of my region. Raymond, the fellow she married was from Seattle—North West region—and they met at the University of Kentucky—Central region. You probably know where this is going, right? She was out of my region, Raymond was out of his and my counterpart in Kentucky was busy fending off the nineteen girls who thought they were in love with the same basketball player, so Eleanor and Raymond got married and became what we call an MM. (Migratory Mistake)

Despite the fact that I’d let her down, Eleanor made the best of it. If you were standing on the outside looking in, you’d actually think she was happy. Of course I knew the truth because I go to the inside of a person’s heart—I have to, it’s my job. Eleanor was a good wife and a good mother—a bit overindulgent with Ray Junior maybe, but still a good mother. Papa Raymond was another story. It was bad enough that he had an eye for the ladies, but he also had a great fondness for beer and the business sense of a turnip. An insurance salesman who sold life insurance to everybody but himself, how crazy is that?

When Life Management stepped in and did their dirty work, Raymond got an illness nobody wants and it was two years before they finally gave the okay for him to die. Eleanor took care of him that whole time and once he was gone, she worked two jobs so Ray Junior could go on to college.

Eleanor’s a woman with a big heart, lots of grit and steadfast determination, which is fortunate because when it comes to dealing with Lindsay Gray, she’s gonna need all of it. If Eleanor’s got a flaw it’s that she’s blind to the faults of those she loves, which is why Ray Junior is such a problem.

Author Bio

Award-winning novelist Bette Lee Crosby brings the wit and wisdom of her Southern Mama to works of fiction—the result is a delightful blend of humor, mystery and romance along with a cast of quirky charters who will steal your heart away.

Born in Detroit and raised in a plethora of states scattered across the South and Northeast, Crosby originally studied art and began her career as a packaging designer. When asked to write a few lines of copy for the back of a pantyhose package, she discovered a love for words that was irrepressible. After years of writing for business, she turned to works of fiction and never looked back. “Storytelling is in my blood,” Crosby laughingly admits, “My mom was not a writer, but she was a captivating storyteller, so I find myself using bits and pieces of her voice in most everything I write.”

Crosby’s work was first recognized in 2006 when she received The National League of American Pen Women Award for a then unpublished manuscript. Since that, she has gone on to win several more awards, including another NLAPW award, three Royal Palm Literary Awards, the FPA President’s Book Award Gold Medal and most recently the 2011 Reviewer’s Choice Award and Reader’s View Southeast Fiction Literary Award.

Her published works to date are: Cracks in the Sidewalk (2009), Spare Change (2011), The Twelfth Child (2012), and Life in the Land of IS (2012).  Life in the Land of IS is a memoir written for Lani Deauville, a woman the Guinness Book of Records lists as the world’s longest living quadriplegic.

Crosby newest novel Cupid’s Christmas is scheduled for release in early October and following that, What Matters Most will be released in early 2013.

Scottish Sundays: Photo Essay

Welcome back to another installment of Scottish Sundays!  I’m feeling nostalgic for the misty green country today, so I thought I’d share some photos with you from my trip there.  That trip, back in 2007, inspired my debut novel, The Burning of Isobel Key.  Hope you enjoy the shots!

Eilean Donan Castle in the Highlands.

St. Andrews, the town that inspired The Burning of Isobel Key.

Yes, I stuck my face in a freezing stream in December. Why? It’s a fairy stream with magical properties, of course!

On the magical Isle of Skye.

I found Nessie!

This ruined church captured my imagination.

If you want to know more about my Scottish travels, visit my Pinterest board or pick up The Burning of Isobel Key.

FREE for two days! VAEMPIRES: ZOMBIE RISING by Thomas Winship

Awesome news, everybody!  Thomas Winship is giving away his newest novel for two days (11/15-11/16): spread the word and snatch this fast-paced YA adventure.  There’s plenty of blood, guts, and mutated vampires.  Who could ask for anything more?

Get if free on Amazon!

My review:

The latest installment in the Vaempires series doesn’t disappoint.  Following Linq and Ray through the decimated city of Orion, this book happens almost simultaneously with the events in Vaempires: Revolution.  The different perspective is fresh, and Linq’s POV engaged me much more than Daniel’s, the hero of the first two books in this action-packed series.

Linq’s a genius and Ray’s a well-trained warrior, but even they may not be any match for the strange Vaempires that threaten the world, especially when it becomes clear that the Vaempires just won’t stay dead.  Overlaying the story of the two friends are gruesome snapshots of the fate of the spunky princess, Cassandra.

Winship has built a world of action, terror, and intrigue, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next!  Be warned: this series is not for the squeamish or the faint of heart, but the heroes are flawed, the villains are chilling, and the futuristic view of our world is properly horrifying.  A great, quick read!

Writers on Wednesday: Julie Anne Lindsey, author of LOVE BLOSSOMS

I’ve got something fun in store for you today.  Julie Anne Lindsey, author of sweet romance, has agreed to drop by and do a character interview.  Sit back and enjoy this conversation with her newest heroine, Jillian Parker.

Love Blossoms in Honey Creek

Jen! Thank you so much for inviting me over to your blog today! My second sweet romance novella, Love Blossoms, released last week and I’m all smiles. My heart never strays far from Honey Creek, the setting for a new Turquoise Morning Press imprint by the same name. I’d pack up and move there if it were possible. There’s something so enchanting about this little town. I know love is lurking under every apple tree and behind every guarded heart. It’s everywhere, just waiting to be discovered. Since I can’t live there, I thought Jillian Parker, my heroine would be the perfect person to tell you about her hometown.

Jillian, what’s your favorite part of living in Honey Creek? Easy. My ex-fiancé moved to Boston. Wait. No, not that. I’m sorry. That wasn’t nice. I’m not myself this week. My best friend’s little sister is getting married. Now I have a house full of groomsmen and an empty refrigerator. I run an inn. These guys eat more than half a football team, and they’re so loud. I’m used to quiet couples on a romantic weekend. What was the question?

Forget the question. Did you say groomsmen? Tell me more! There are five. All nice enough, though they take over my kitchen to play cards every night – loudly – till nearly dawn. They’re friends of the groom. Two he met in college. One grew up here with us, and one…is his wife’s cousin, Jackson.

I saw that. You blushed and did a little sigh thing. Now, I need to know about Jackson. Oh. *blushes* He’s, um, very nice. He’s a bit guarded, but I can’t say I’m not. He says he remembers me from when he lived here, but I don’t think he ever talked to me before. He was older, though, maybe I was too young to bother with. Then after high school, I was with Chase the Idiot. I’m sorry. That wasn’t nice either. I’m frazzled. There’s a wedding coming this week and I’m understaffed. Jackson helps me, but then I get too befuddled to know what I’m supposed to be doing when he’s around. Ugh.

You like him. What? No. I mean, of course. He’s a very nice guy. Helpful and considerate. He cooks too.

I bet he’s cute too. *blushes wildly*

What about Chase the Idiot? He’s not an idiot. It was mean to say. He just makes poor decisions. He’s probably going to get himself killed. When I think of how Jackson and I had to save him the other night…those guys were dangerous. One had a knife. Maybe he is an idiot.

My goodness! Are you okay? What happened? Jackson. *smile* He flattened all three of those creeps, tossed Chase’s sorry butt into the truck and took off. And he saved me from the winker.

The what now? Never mind. *shakes head* It was scary, but I felt safe. Does that make sense?

Not really. So you’re done with Chase? For sure? You two were engaged. That’s huge. Yep. We’re done.

So, what about Jackson? Jackson’s leaving in a week. He’s only in town for the wedding, and then he’ll be gone.

That’s so romantic. What are you going to do? *Shrugs* I don’t know.

If you’re in the mood for a sweet romantic read with a very happy ending, I hope you’ll visit Honey Creek. The sun is setting, bullfrogs are croaking and the crickets are singing, “Come on.” Sweet tea or hot cider. Fresh summer strawberries or crisp fall apples. You’ll find it there. And taking a trip to Honey Creek is as easy as  Amazon : ) I hope to see you there!

Love Blossoms:

Jillian thought she had everything she needed until Jackson walked through her door…

There’s a wedding coming to Honey Creek and the whole town’s preparing for the party. When Jillian Parker agreed to host a few groomsmen at her inn, she had no idea what she was getting into. One of those groomsmen is Jackson Tate, and he’s making her concentration completely impossible. He’s funny, fascinating, frustrating, and leaving in a week. Jillian does not have time for that level of distraction. With Jackson nearby, events to coordinate, a bride to please, and an ex-fiancé to dodge, her peaceful life’s getting crazy fast. With any luck, she’ll survive the week and put the whole thing behind her as soon as possible.

…But not if Jackson has anything to say about it.

Excerpt:

“You used to cause quite a stir,” Jackson said into Jillian’s ear. “I bet you haven’t danced since you came home.”

Jillian smiled the demure smile she’d perfected long ago and slipped out into the night beside Danielle. A laugh split her friend’s face, and Danielle hollered into the night sky. Watermelon Crawl boomed from the truck speakers. An outrageous smile spread across Jillian’s face until her cheeks ached. Memories flooded over her, and she was instantly 10 years younger. Her muscles tingled, and the steps came back like a reflex to the sound of her friends’ laughter and the sight of embers floating in the night sky.

Her skirt swung left and right along with her toe. Material caught her thighs and infused her with energy. Beth’s squeal blasted out of the kitchen door, and she nearly took Jillian down dashing onto the dirt beside her.

“Wooooo!”

Nothing mattered. How could anything matter?

The small troop of dancers stomped and turned in the firelight. Fireflies and golden embers floated and blinked against the deep navy blue sky. No walls contained them; no neighbors complained about the noise; no traffic sounds interrupted the cricket and bullfrog chorus. There was no more freedom on earth than she had right there. A round of clapping went up as the bodies slowed and ambled in place, laughing and congratulating one another. They still had it.

Giggles seasoned the air, and the music changed smoothly to another lifelong favorite. Fishin’ in the Dark . She thought of all the groomsmen planning to night fish before Mrs. Prattle’s punch kicked in the night before. In a flash, men and women sided up ready to twirl and swing in pairs. For a moment, Jillian stepped back to watch the couples, but a massive shadow blocked the light from the fire. Jackson hitched an eyebrow and nodded her way.

In the space of a heartbeat, the group was in motion, and so was she.

“You haven’t lost it, I suppose,” he said as their bodies came together.

She made the most of the time they were apart, enjoying his audience, strutting her stuff. When they met again she said, “You’ve noticed.”

“Honey, every man in town’s noticed.”

The couples began to swing, but Jillian found her body airborne. Like a feather in the wind, her feet swung left then right of Jackson’s hips. Clapping and hooting

ensued. No sooner was she grounded again than she began to twirl. The rush of endorphins and joy shot up from her feet to her hair, and her heart threatened to fly her

to the moon.
