Free Book! Two Elements to Finding a Great Author

In today’s growing market of books, it is sometimes hard to find a story that grabs you and makes you want to read more. What are two elements that help you decide? One may be a free book from the author; the other element may take you by surprise!

Everyone loves to get something for free. More and more authors today are offering free books to entice readers to take a chance on reading their stories. I have several free books available for just that reason. The number of free books has grown so much over the last couple of years that the market is saturated with these free offers. The pain for the reader is shuffling through the good stories and the not so good stories. I think we have all encountered those. Writing a good story doesn’t come cheap - or free - for the author. It takes months, sometimes years, for an author to write a story. Then, comes the costs of editing, book covers, formatting, advertising, and more. These costs can run into the thousands of dollars. This is a hefty investment for anyone to make in the hopes that a reader will enjoy the story enough to purchase additional books. But, why would a reader buy another book by the author if they can get so many of them for free? This leads into the next element: writing style!

Readers who really enjoy an author’s writing are more likely to purchase additional books the author has written. An author’s writing style is more than the book cover, the editing, or the formatting-all of which are important. It is the voice of the author. The way they tell a story that makes it interactive where you laugh, cry, cheer, and get angry with the characters. It is the way the author creates a world that is so vivid you feel like you are a part of it and have a vested interest in what happens to everything and everyone in it. It is about the author’s branding and what they believe in. Writing styles cross genre and make a so-so author into a great author. It takes a special author to connect with readers on an emotional level that the reader can identify with. The author isn’t writing something just to make a buck or waste your time, they are writing to take you on a journey that would otherwise be impossible and help you deal with the stress of daily life.

A story should take you away from where you are and into a new world. A great story should be interactive and make you feel like you are there. When an author gives you a free story to read, they are giving you a chance to hear their voice and get lost in their world. If you do enjoy their story, please consider supporting them by purchasing another of their books.

Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2: Giving back

When I was asked to participate in the first Pets in Space anthology I was a little hesitant. Time has become a very precious commodity and I knew this would pull me away from other commitments I had made. Ultimately, I knew that there are some things worth saying: 'Wait, what are your prioritize?' This anthology quickly came to be one of those priorities!

Embrace the Romance Pets in Space 2 by S.E. Smith

I have written in four previous anthologies, three of them were to help charities. Three of the anthologies were for animal shelters and were very successful. I can't explain how thrilled I am to be a part of such worthy causes. When Pauline and Veronica approached me with the PiSA anthology and the charity they had chosen to support, Herodogs.org, my hesitation quickly evaporated.

The first Pets in Space turned out to be a wonderful success and such a positive experience I immediately agreed when they asked me to join in Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2. The reaction from Hero-Dogs.org was heartfelt and their appreciation showed in the beautiful letter they sent. It was evident that we had made a difference - but, it was beyond that. The enthusiasm of the other authors and their desire to help make a difference was/is contiguous. You can't help but fall in love with all the animal videoes and photos that are posted or the heartfelt stories that the authors have written for this anthology.

What makes PiSA2 different from other anthologies? Each and every story is written from the heart with the desire to give back to our service men and women who need to know they are still valued. Each story is an original, never before released one as well.

As the daughter of a disabled veteran, I'm proud to be able to give back to those who have served while giving readers a fabulous story that will take them to new worlds! I hope you will give Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2 a chance to bring love, laughter, and more than a touch of adventurous HEA to your life!

Hugs,
Susan

All in the Family: Books that Build Worlds

Every story begins with an idea, a concept, a vision usually starting with a world. From there, characters ignite onto the page, bringing with them a rich history of characteristics that readers either love or hate. What an author wants to do is pull that extreme emotion from a reader. The last thing an author wants is one where the reader feels disconnected or apathetic. The readers want to feel invested in the lives of the characters and their world.

Building the world is a fascinating experience. Everything has to be taken into consideration from the environment and topography of the world to the laws and norms that guide the characters. The world should be vibrantly described with just enough detail for the readers to build it in their own minds without having to read a book the size of encyclopedia set.

The world is important, but without the characters, it would be nothing more than a beautiful painting that you've admired and moved on from. It is the paintings of the people that hold you captive, wondering what they were like, what they were doing, who they were to have been captured for centuries. A masterpiece leaves you aching to reach out and ask the artist and their subject the story behind the painting.

Characters are like those paintings. We have all seen them at one time or another - the Mona Lisa, the great battles, or the forgotten photo in a drawer of a relative that someone once knew, but has since forgotten their name. You stare at it wondering what it must have been like at that moment in time for them. A good author can capture that moment and bring it alive, transporting you to a time and place far away.

In my stories, I am fascinated by those lives. I'm enthralled by the people who live in these worlds, whether in another galaxy or here at home. I want to know who they are, who their friends are, and most of all their connection to each other. No character is too small in a story to make a difference. Every day we meet people who touch our lives, and whether we consciously are aware of it or not, we touch theirs. Life is about family, friends, and the world we all create together. A brilliant author can suck you into one they have created.

The Mind of an Author

Hi Everyone!
The mind of an author is a amazing and overwhelming place to be, but I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. I've learned a lot over the last four years and feel it is important that as an author and as a person, that I share some of the things with others in the hopes that it can help. Today, I'm going to share three things I've discovered since I began writing: One: being in business for yourself is a fun, but scary thing. Two: That being an author is very much like being an artist, but it is also like being an athlete. Three: That it is important to still enjoy life. So, here is what it is like to be in the mind of an author....

Most people, including authors, don't think about going into business for themselves. There are all kinds of things you have to know, learn, and hurtles you must be willing to jump or crawl over. It is time consuming, as well, which eats into a writer's most essential need. I don't care how successful you are, you are still involved in the day to day matters of promoting your work. You have to because if you don't, you don't earn a living. It is both fun and frightening to navigate the rapids and calm waters of finding what works and what doesn't. It can also be exhausting as many authors work 80 plus hours a week with no time off. This can lead to exhaustion and chronic fatigue. I made a promise to myself when I first started writing that I would only do it as long as it was fun. There are days when it isn't, but I'm talking long term. This is why I'm still struggling to find the balance to enjoy the journey while enjoying the work.

The second thing I've noticed is that being an author is very much like being an artist and an athlete. When I talk about an artist, I'm talking about all types of artists: painters, singers, actors, etc. An artist brings things to life. It takes an incredible amount of discipline to capture an image in your brain and bring it alive. It can also be exhausting. Like an athlete who trains to improve not only their mental and physical stamina, but develop their skills, so do other artists. It takes hours and hours and hours of practice for years to become a master. It is said to become a master of anything you must do it continuously for ten years. I firmly believe that. To reach that level, it is important to take care of yourself mentally and physically so that you have the stamina and endurance to reach your full potential. This has been one of the things I've had to learn to do - pace myself - so that I do not burn out. Sometimes my brain actually hurts, feels bruised. When that happens, I know I need to take a break. I don't quit writing, I simply slow down, take some needed rest, and work on other projects. It is not only okay to look after yourself, but necessary if you want to become a master at anything you set your mind to.

Finally, it is important to enjoy life. This is probably the hardest one for me to learn and stick with believe it or not. All my life I have worked and worked hard. I always felt that if I wasn't doing something, that I was being lazy. Have you ever felt that way? Well, it isn't being lazy, it is recharging and appreciating the simple things that make all that work worth while. What is the point of meeting people if you don't enjoy their company? Or seeing a beautiful painting, sunset/sunrise, rainbow, or the other hundreds of things that you may see during the day. We only get one shot at this moment in time and should appreciate and embrace it. If you love the sound of rain or sitting and watching the squirrels play, take a few minutes each day to do something for you, only you, because you matter. Yes, it has taken me years to discover that I'm not only a mom, a wife, a sister, but I'm Susan and it is okay to be just me and do what I want to do every once in a while. My kids, my hubby, my sister and brother love me even more for finally realizing what they've been trying to teach me all this time - it is okay to enjoy life without worrying about anyone else for a while.

The mind of an author is a confusing place - at least mine is. But, it is mine and I'm embracing it. It comes up with vivid, beautiful worlds filled with amazing characters that come to life. They are noisy, pushy, and make me excited to share them with the world. Yes, it is scary and tiresome at times. Yes, I have to work at it and exercise and sometimes take a break. I'm still learning a lot. One of those lessons is that my readers believe in my stories and my skills and are willing to enjoy the journey alongside me as I strive to become a master storyteller. They help me keep this fun and for that I will be forever grateful. Hugs... S.E. Smith

Characters in a Story: The Alliance

What is it about the characters in a book that just capture your imagination? When I first wrote Hunter's Claim: The Alliance Book 1, it was supposed to be in an anthology and less than 20K words. Three days later, it was over 30K and I could feel the power of the world sucking me in.

I didn't understand why Razor's book had to be the next one told until it was time to write Dagger's Hope. After all, he was only mentioned once in Hunter’s story. I even had readers asking why I wrote his story instead of Jordan or Taylor’s. In my head, both girls needed to grow up before their story could be told, but it was more than that, Jordan couldn’t do it alone. That was when I understood how the puzzle pieces were beginning to fall into place. I needed Razor's story because he and Kali was going to help Jordan. Without them, the story couldn't happen.

Now, with the completion of Challenging Saber, Saber and Taylor's story, even more of the puzzle has been revealed and I'm beginning to see the universe that makes up this amazing series - and more! Each book, each character is so important in the larger picture of what is going to happen.

So, if you wonder why an author writes the way they do, keep an eye out for the clues hidden within the pages, because sometimes, the author doesn't even know until the story is written!

What's in a Newsletter?

Newsletter can be two-fold for anyone. Some come too often, while others never enough. They also need to contain information that the reader will find interesting.

Newsletters can be the life-blood for any business, especially an author. When I first started writing, I had more and more readers asking where my newsletter was so they could sign up for it. I told them to give me a week and I would have one.

For me, there was a fine line between sending out too many emails and not enough. I made the decision to send out a monthly newsletter because I know what my life is like (did I mention I was working a full-time 40+ hour a week job and teaching at the local State College as well?). I was busy and the last thing I wanted or needed were more emails or Spam, so I decided once a month was perfect to give out the information I wanted to share without overwhelming my readers. I do send out a notice for releases, but that was because the readers asked me to.

My next thought when I began writing a newsletter was what should I put in it. I knew I wanted to share with readers what I was doing and the books that I had completed, but I also wanted more so I also included an Author's Spotlight where I would showcase other Authors. I was terrified! LOL. Yes, terrified. Why? Because I didn't know any other authors. I was new to this and had never even talked to another author in my life. Fortunately, the few I reached out to were more than welling to be my guest. Since then, I have met many more authors, some in person, some online, and have had the privilege to share their information with my readers just as my readers have shared other authors' books with me.

Recently, I've been trying to give back to my readers by writing and publishing exclusive stories found only through my newsletter. I wrote The Dragon's Treasure based on a flashfiction story I had written a few years ago. Of course, as I began writing, the characters and story took on a life of their own. The next story, The Sea King's Lady, sealed the Seven Kingdoms series which are all interwoven, and of course, the stories are getting longer and longer. I just completed A Witch's Touch, which be out in the August Newsletter. I'm very excited about the stories and hope that readers will enjoy them as much as I do.

So, what's in a newsletter? A little of everything. A little about me, a little about my books, a new story, and an introduction to a new author you might not know about. If there is something you would like to see in the newsletter, just let me know. I'll be happy to add it. So, if you haven't sign up yet and would like to, go to http://sesmithfl.com and sign up. I look forward sharing more of my wonderful worlds with you.

Viper's Defiant Mate: Sarafin Warriors Book 2

Yes, it is almost here! The long awaited sequel to Choosing Riley. Viper's Mate will be available May 26th. This story follows Viper d'Rojah who is sent on a mission to bring Tina and Pearl St. Claire back to his world.

Join in the adventure as Viper discovers that some missions are much more difficult than others when he finds himself on the wrong end of the shotgun filled with rock salt.

Viper's story took me by surprise as I was not expecting it to take the many twists and turns that it did. I know, I know... You'd think by now that I would have considering the number of stories I have out. I think that is why I enjoy writing so much, none of my characters are the same. Just like my own big sister, Riley and Tina are night and day from each other. I love the diversity between the characters. Throw in Grandma Pearl, and you never know what is going to happen.

I hope you enjoy Viper's Defiant Mate, available for pre-order at all the major distributors.

Dagger's Hope: The Alliance Book 3

What would you do if you found out the person you loved was still alive? Jordan faces that question in Dagger's Hope: The Alliance Book 3.

One reader comments on Dagger and Jordan's story is "If I was to describe the story in a word it would be 'powerful'. The fight scenes were powerful in a forceful/violent way of a man forced to fight in order to live. The scenes between Jordan and Dagger were powerful in their tenderness and love...."

I couldn't describe it any better myself. This was a 'powerful and moving' story of a woman's determination to find and save the man she loves and a man's determination to survive in the hope of returning to her.

Dagger's Hope: The Alliance Book 3 is available for pre-order at Amazon, Smashwords, and soon to other distributors. I hope you will join me in on this action packed adventure. Dagger's Hope (The Alliance, #3) by S.E. Smith

NYT/USAT: Thank You for Believing in Me

I recently found out that Twin Dragons: Dragon Lords of Valdier Book 7 made the New York Times and USA TODAY Bestseller's list. To say I'm happy and excited is an understatement. But, making the list is more than just patting myself on the back, it is recognizing that I did not complete this journey alone.

So, I want to take a moment and say thank you. Thank you to all of my readers who have been there and supported me from the very beginning when I was just learning not only how to write, but to self-publish and navigate through the world of publishing. Thank you for giving me the moral support I needed to face all the challenges. YOU gave me the strength to continue the climb when it would have been so easy to just pack it all in and crawl back into my little shell.

Thank you to all my new readers. You are discovering that my books are about more than romance, more than adventure, more than action and suspense. You are discovering that it is about love, laughter, and the journey where relationships and fighting for what you believe are a part of all of us. Your support gives me the courage to continue to climb the mountain, even though I'm terrified of heights. Your belief in the stories, in sharing with your friends, family, and reading buddies gives me the confidence to continue to write the stories I love and share them.

So, thank you! To one and all for being there, being you, and opening your hearts to a stranger and letting me in. Thank you for believing in me when I wasn't sure I believed in myself. Thank you for giving me the courage to share my stories and my world with you. Together, we are proving that Indie Authors are a force to noticed and the reason is because of the fans who enjoy our stories.

Take care,
Susan aka S. E. Smith
New York Times and USA TODAY Bestselling Author :)
