Summer Days
"Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language." ~ Henry James
There is something about those words, isn't there?
Summer brings immediately to mind hot days when there's no school. Possibly memories of lemonade, cookies, and playing with friends. For me, it brings back memories of being able to read or watch TV, making forts out of tents, and hot sunlight spilling through windows.
In general, summer usually brings happy memories for us. Do you have a good one you'd like to share?

Finding Motivation (Health Blog Series, Post #2)
A lot of people feel like they're too fat.
I'm going to be honest. Unless you are severely obese (and a doctor has told you you need to lose weight for your health) then this is probably not going to be a good enough motivator for you. And perhaps even then, it won't be enough.
Your homework for this week will be to find out what will motivate you for months, even years, to help you. Looking good isn't usually enough of a motivational tool to last that long; especially when you're confronted with your favorite dessert being waved under your nose.
Just thinking you're fat is a self-esteem issue. Now, losing weight might be able to help you with that, but how is that going to help if you gain it all back? It's not. This is not a band-aid for some bigger issue. I'm doing this because I want to help you with your health - not so you can feel beautiful, or hot, or attractive, or whatever word you choose.
If you want to feel that way, that's fine. It's not a bad thing. But trying to lose weight to adhere to some society's version of beauty is not a good way to start.
I want you to choose an inner reason, and one that will keep you going for a very long time. My family has a history of heart problems. For me, my motivation is, at least in part, fear. Fear that I'll go through some of the same things. My grandmother had a triple bypass surgery. My uncle had a quadruple bypass surgery. The grandfather on the other side of my family just had a stint put in.
I don't want any of that. I don't want high blood pressure, or heart attacks; any kind of heart disease scares me silly because I've seen some of the things it can do to you.
Maybe for you, you'll want to be around to enjoy grandchildren. Or you'll want to be able to play sports with your kids. Maybe you want more energy so you can do more.
But please don't pick an exterior reason. Or, not JUST an exterior reason. Pick something that really lights a fire under you, and post it in the comments.

Trouble (Free Fantasy Short Story)
Troy breathed a sigh of relief, and Beenie's mouth twisted.
"All right," she said. "Let's go and tell them. Now."
"What? Now?" Troy asked.
"Yes, now," Beenie said firmly, turning around. She looked over her shoulder at Troy, who got the point. He scurried on ahead to lead the way.
"We're going to get in trouble for breaking rules again," Troy said as they headed back to the Fairy Ring.
"I don't care," Beenie said.
"I know YOU don't," Troy said. "But I do. How are we going to explain this?"
"We?" Beenie asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, we," Troy said. "I came with you, didn't I?"
"You'll blame me, then," she said. She'd caused enough trouble for Troy and his family. "You'll say it was all my idea, which it was, and I'll get in trouble but you won't."
Beenie thought she heard another sigh of relief, but Troy said nothing. She took this as his agreement to her plan, and they were silent for the rest of the trip back to the Ring.
The closer they got, the busier the woods were. The gnomes hadn't come to attack yet, and Beenie knew that this was because they hadn't finished repairing their machine yet.
The work was going at a frenetic pace, and she thought that it must be almost done. The walls atleast were nearly finished. It looked like the rabbits were busily weaving the last log into place.
Beenie soared right over the whole operation, but Troy had to dodge other creatures below to get to Peter.
The unicorn was in the same place he'd been when they had last seen him; his graceful neck was bowed down, and his slender muzzle was resting on the grass.
"Peter?" Beenie called, landing in front of him as Troy caught up, breathing hard.
Peter raised his head, and she saw a flash in his eyes.
"What are you doing here?" he asked. His voice was weak, but she could still hear the ring of authority in it, and she winced.
"We - we went back to the gnome tower," she said, no longer sure this had been such a good idea.
"After you were specifically told not to?" Peter asked.
"...Yes," Beenie said.
"And what did you find?"
"Well, the - the gnomes are repairing the machine Troy and I broke last night. That's why they haven't attacked yet."
"It might interest you to know that we've had spies there, watching them, ever since you alerted them to your presence," Peter said. "You put yourself in danger for no good reason. Had you asked permission first, we might have given you another job that would have done some good."
Beenie ducked her head, and her cheeks flamed.
"Um...Peter, sir?"
Beenie turned, and saw a rabbit standing there and looking nervous. His whiskers were twitching wildly.
"Yes?" Peter asked, turning his attention to the rabbit.
"Told you this wasn't a good idea," Troy muttered.
Beenie said nothing, but her cheeks went even redder than before.
"...wall is complete, and we've started on the tunnel."
"Very good," Peter said, as Beenie listened in again. "Post guards. We need to have as much warning as we can get. It's only a matter of time before they come."
"Yes, sir," the rabbit said, before dashing off.
"Tunnel?" Troy asked nervously.
"Tunnel," Peter said. "It is dangerous for you to enter and exit outside of the fort, so the rabbits are digging a tunnel to the catacombs from here."
"Oh," said Beenie in a small voice.
"And now we have to decide what to do with you two," Peter said, turning his eyes back on her.
Beenie bit her lip, and fought the urge to hide.
"All right," she said. "Let's go and tell them. Now."
"What? Now?" Troy asked.
"Yes, now," Beenie said firmly, turning around. She looked over her shoulder at Troy, who got the point. He scurried on ahead to lead the way.

The Weekly Quote: Summer
"Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it." ~ Russell Baker
Mm. Sunburn, heat, dust. We all dislike those things, I think. Yet, most everyone that you speak to will say that they love summer.
I personally dislike summer. At least, when I'm outside. But then, I'm a writer. I spend most of my time inside, in climate controlled rooms. However, like just about everyone, I've also had a nasty sunburn. Because my dislike of summer doesn't extend to swimming.
I love the water (unless it's up my nose, but that's not the point). And it being boiling hot outside didn't keep me out of the water. It chased me in, so to speak. Anyway, I enjoyed it so much, that I failed to notice the burn on my shoulders getting worse and worse. I blistered, and spent every night for the next week or so sleeping uncomfortably on my stomach.
Perfect example of why this quote makes sense.
Do you have a summer experience you'd like to share? Post it below!

Improving Your Health (Blog Series, Post #1)
Okey doke.
For those of you who have read my blog on any sort of consistent basis, you'll know about my weekly health challenge posts.
Unfortunately, I don't think those will actually be overly helpful. In other words, I don't think I'm helping you enough by doing it this way; don't you feel special? You should. :)
Anyway, this is to announce the end of the weekly health challenge, and to let you all know that, instead, I'm going to do a more in-depth blog series on it, on par with the one I did about public school a while back. I hope.
But before I plunge right into it, I suppose I should let you know why I can help you, right? For all you know, I could be an overweight woman who's basically blowing soap out her nose when she gives you directions.
Done with the mental picture?
Good. Then let's get started.
I was a pretty overweight kid from the time I was eight years old until about eighteen. And the reason that changed was remarkably simple.
I was a black belt, and the other black belts in the school I trained in left me in the dust. Every time. I hated it, of course, so I set out to change it.
I started doing some simple exercises at home every night, building up my strength and flexibility, and started reading health food magazines and newsletters.
The results being that at one point I had dropped thirty pounds without a trainer or a gym, or even going on a diet.
So I think I can help people. Or at least people who are like me, or are like I used to be.
I don't want to be super-thin, or look like a body-builder. I want to be healthy and happy, and have lots of energy. And I think I can help you take a step in the right direction.
Let's get started!
First off, there are six aspects of health:
~Physical
~Spiritual
~Mental
~Social
~Environmental
~Emotional
Not necessarily in that order, but you get the idea. For simplicity's sake, I'm going to stick with the physical part.
The first post (after this) will be about finding your motivation for changing your health for the better. After that, we'll move on to the step-by-step process to get you organized and then you get you started!
If you have any questions or suggestions, please comment them below!

Return to the Tree (Free Fantasy Short Story)
"I don't understand why we have to do this," Troy grumbled, following Beenie's lead as she flew out of sight of the rabbits at the catacomb entrance.
"Because I want to know what's going on," Beenie said, a grim set to her mouth. "And maybe there's something we can do to help."
"You mean like what we did last night?" Troy asked. "Make the whole thing worse?"
Beenie turned to face him.
"Troy," she said. "This is all our fault. I want to do what I can to fix it."
"And you're planning on doing this by breaking their rules?"
"Yes," Beenie said.
"On what world is that a good idea?"
Beenie didn't answer, only flew ahead. Her eyes had filled with tears, and she was trying hard not to sniffle.
"Beenie?' Beenie, wait," Troy called.
She relaized she had been speeding ahead of him, and she still didn't know her way around well enough to find her way alone. She slowed down, and discreetly wiped her eyes on the back of her hand.
"Beenie, I'm sorry," Troy said. "I just don't think that we should be breaking more rules. We only made it worse last time. Maybe they gave us those rules for a reason."
Beenie hovered in the air, facing away from him, and trying valiantly not to cry.
"Beenie?" Troy darted underneath her so he could see her face, and she turned away again - but not before he had seen.
"Beenie, you're crying!" he exclaimed. She would have laughed at his comical surprise any other time.
"Yes, I'm crying," she said, sniffing loudly. "You'd be crying too, if everything was all your fault!"
"But - but - but-"
troy obviously couldn't think of anything to say.
"Just show me the way," she said, sounding like she had a cold.
Troy did so in silence, glancing back at her occasionally, as if to make sure she was still following.
They went without talking, growing more and more quiet as they progressed.
"We're almost there," Troy said in a whisper.
Beenie hurried up to join him, and a few minutes later the giant tree that the gnomes used as a tower was looming before them.
They hid in a shrub nearby with a good view of the entrance and exit, as well as a good view through the windows.
What they saw inside made Beenie gasp in horror.
"They're rebuilding it!" she hissed.
"We have to tell them," Troy said. "Beenie?"
She had pretended not to hear. All of their hard work the night before, when they had messed with the giant machine of destruction. was being undone as she watched. Soon enough, that giant thing would be out, and wreaking havoc. And, unlike before, the gnomes now knew that the forest creatures were aware of it.
"We have to stop them!" Beenie said, her wings fluttering angrily.
"No, Beenie!" Troy cried, grabbing onto her ankle as she tried to fly toward the tree. "You can't," he grunted, pulling her back.
"Why not?" Beenie asked, wings straining. "Let go!"
"You'll get caught! Why don't we just go tell the others?"
"But we can stop them," Beenie said.
"Not by ourselves," Troy said. "Look at all of them." He pointed with his free paw at the mass of gnomes swamring over the machine. "We'll never be able to do anything as long as all of them are there like that. Let's just go and tell Peter. Please?"
Beenie looked back at his pleading eyes, and he held her gaze for a long minute.
Then she relented, and lowered herself back down next to him, head bowed.
"All right," she said softly.
"Because I want to know what's going on," Beenie said, a grim set to her mouth. "And maybe there's something we can do to help."

The Hobbit Extended Edition! :D
So I was cruising Facebook (procrastinating) when I saw that The Hobbit Facebook page had posted a video. I happened to remember seeing a clip of the Misty Mountains song on that page before An Unexpected Journey came out, so I looked a little closer. What cool stuff had they posted now?
Guess what I saw.
This! :D
A clip of a scene from the extended edition of the first movie!
It appears that the extended edition of An Unexpected Journey is now available. Everyone on my personal Facebook saw all the happy faces, so now I get to share the awesomeness with you, too. :D
Do you think that scene should have been left in the movie? Why or why not?
Guess what I saw.

New Harry Potter Book Covers! What?
The new adult UK covers.
Comparing the new cover to the old: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. So, apparently, there's a new set of covers for the Harry Potter books. I didn't realize there was anything wrong with the old ones, but I guess it might be a little like people writing fan fiction. Someone just couldn't resist.
This could be seen as a way to make more money, of course, for the die-hard fans who want everything Harry Potter - EVERYTHING, I TELL YOU!
Ahem. While I was looking this stuff up, I also discovered that there's yet another set of book covers out there. Which, to be fair, is supposedly for the UK. This set is fluorescent colored and eye-catching. Eye-catching in a 'bang! Look at me!' kind of way. You can see the first three here.
But then there's these.
I saw nothing wrong with the old ones, but I have to say that these are pretty cool. I'm partial to the spines making a picture of Hogwarts. That's pretty awesome.
What do you think of this?

The Weekly Quote: Freedom and Being Responsible
"I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do." ~ Robert A. Heinlein
Who believes that they are morally responsible, outside of the law? I think some people believe the law of our land is the only law they are responsible for following.
But is that so?
Isn't it true that even if someone made a law saying you had to kill someone, you could refuse to do it? Why? Because murder is wrong, most people would answer. That alone implies that they believe they have to answer for whatever they do - even if it's not against the law.
I am free because I know that whatever laws are made, I am morally responsible for what I, personally, do - even if the law says it's okay. If the law says murder is okay, then I still have an obligation to avoid murder. Because I'll still be accountable for taking a life.

The Weekly Health Challenge: Dancing and Workout DVDs
The Weekly Health Challenge: Level One
Put on some music you love and dance to it
I'm not talking about going to a club, or doing an organized dance. I mean lock yourself in your room and be as goofy and silly as you want. Move around, dance, and don't worry about what other people think. The kind of dancing you used to do as a kid, before what other people thought mattered.
First of all, dancing is a great way to exercise. Second, doing it alone and without an audience eliminates any self-consciousness you might feel if you go work out at a gym.
Have fun!
The Weekly Health Challenge: Level Two
Try out a workout video
Has there ever been a workout video you wanted to try? Go get it, rent it, borrow it, whatever - but get it in your house and put it in.
Try it out; if it's a good one, post it!
Extra Challenge: Combine both challenges and see how you do!
