And now I went to actually read it, and screw that person so hard. First of all, anon is just cowardly. Second of all, how anyone sees Mary as anything but a villain is about as baffling to me as why anyone is going to vote for Trump for President. Evidence is evidence, people. Third of all, screw that person again. How much of an asshat do you have to be to deliberately try to hurt someone?
Ah, the internet: giving free rein to people with issues to vent hate on the unsuspecting since whenever it was invented. Sigh. Thanks for this, lovely. <3333

Inaccurate…character…work…???? I’m sorry but I am so baffled like you characters are 100% spot on that you should be hired by BBC to write for them…
Bless you. thank you for that. I found the most baffling part the bit where they said that they disliked Mary but didn’t see her as a villain. So… why the dislike…? Weird. Either way, I think that sometimes people forget that characterisation in the world of fanfiction, is a rather subjective thing. It has to be WAY off to consider it “inaccurate”. Fanfic is the art of imitation, rather than creation from nothing, and it’s very possible to have many interpretations and many imitations that read as true or resonate with people. I don’t even think that I write Sherlock or John exactly the same way every single time, and that’s fine - people, real and fictional, also change depending on their circumstances. There’s a wide range of possibility here, and we already have that in the fandom. Every author’s version is going to be slightly different from every other author’s, and that sort of range is not only normal in a fandom, but welcome. It’s exactly as it should be.
In canon, Mary shot Sherlock. In my fic, Mary shot another, less important character. One who isn’t literally the title character of the show. That’s completely consistent with canon. *shrug*

Almond lemon custard cake
Hey, so a bunch of people asked for my almond lemon custard cake recipe from The Legacy of Martha J. Hudson. I’m pleased because it’s my own recipe! :) You can very easily make it without the custard and it’s a lovely, sweet cake good for an afternoon snack or a proper dessert, or you can dress it up with the custard. You have two choices there, too: a single cake will be about an inch thick at the outside, so you can slice it in half and put the custard in there, or you can make two and put the custard in between them. In that case, don’t put almonds on the one you intend to use as the bottom layer.
Recipe: (this is long, so I’m putting it under a cut!)
For one cake:
1 + ¼ c. sugar½ cup butter, room temperature or slightly melted
Beat together until creamy and smooth. Add:
1 eggBeat that it in and add:
1 ½ teaspoons of almond extract. Most almond cake recipes call for almond flour (ground almonds) which is terribly expensive. But using extract works juuuust fine, trust me!2/3 cup of milk
the zest of one lemon (note on zesting: be careful to only take the yellow part of the rind; the pith (the white part underneath) is what makes the peel bitter)
Don’t get worried if it looks gross and lumpy at this point; the milk will curdle very slightly with the lemon zest and the almond extract. It’s all good.
Add in:
1 ¼ c. flour½ tsp. baking powder
Pour into a greased 8″ or 9″ cake pan (I prefer 9″) and scatter sliced almonds over the surface. Bake for about 40 minutes at 350 F. It could take slightly longer if you use an 8″ cake pan. Let it cool on the rack for about 20 minutes before attempting to extract it. Sprinkle powdered sugar over the surface with a sieve.
If you also want to do custard, here’s that recipe, which is actually my mother’s:
In a medium pot, combine:
1 cup of milk¼ cup of white sugar
2 tablespoons of cornstarch
a dash of salt
Stirring this constantly (really!), cook it at medium-high heat until it’s thick and boiling. The thickening process can only happen if it reaches a boil and it sort of happens all at once. I like to use a metal whisk to stir it. This will take awhile, though! Don’t stop stirring, whatever you do! Once the mixture is thick, turn the heat down to medium or just below.
Near the beginning of that, before the stirring gets really crucial, break 2 eggs into a bowl and beat them lightly. My mom always did this complicated thing which I usually skip, but basically once the milk mixture has boiled and thickened, she mixes some in with the eggs to warm them. This helps prevent them from getting lumpy, but they’ll do that anyway. Whisk them real good! Put the eggs into the milk mixture and whisk away. Don’t let it boil!!!!
Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Cool it for a good 3-4 hours to let it set completely. If you don’t want it to form a skin on the surface, put a circle of wax paper directly on the surface. If you made one cake, then slice it carefully in half. (If you’ve never done this, leave it horizontal and use a long knife to carefully slice sideways through it. It will not be exactly even and that’s okay.) If you made two cakes, cut off the rounded top of the bottom layer and feed it to hopeful people hanging about your kitchen. If there are no hopeful people, eat it yourself. Spread the custard in a nice thick layer with a big spoon and put the top half on. Sprinkle the powdered sugar on at this point. Voilà. :)
If you make this, please come and tell me how it turned out!! <3333333

“Mary Morstan” (aka AGRA), The Sign of Three
Friendly reminder that it’s canon that there is a list of people who hate Mary. A double-sided list. And these aren’t just any people, either - these are people that are attending her wedding. People that either she or her fiancé chose to invite. Mary herself claims to have “lots of friends”, but considering that her own maid of honour is someone she got close to in order to gain access to someone who was blackmailing her, this statement is patently false. No one likes Mary, and given that she is:
someone who kills people for moneysomeone who takes great joy in other people’s miserysomeone who manipulates and gaslights her own husband
someone who would do literally anything to prevent her husband from making an informed choice about the person he married, including kill the man he was still mourning two years after his supposed death
someone who would steal the name of a dead baby from a tombstone
someone who consistently mocks and demeans her own husband, including in front of others
someone who could easily be classified as a pathological liarsomeone who showed no remorse whatsoever after having attempted to murder the aforementioned best friend and instead had the nerve to be pissy about her husband’s refusal to speak to her, and was still denying him the right to name their child in the moment he took her backnever even bothered thanking the man she shot for freeing her from her blackmailer, but chose instead to rub it in that she was the one staying behind with his only friend and the man he obviously loves,
I find this canon fact completely understandable.
You know who else hates Mary? Me.
