A word on writing fanfiction
Fanfiction is often perceived in writing circles as
something lesser, as something easier. You don’t have to create the characters
or the world, unless you’re writing a complex alternate universe of some sort.
It’s all there; you just have to remix the basic elements somehow and stack a
plot onto it. Or not! Sorry, that’s sarcasm – a lot of people sincerely believe
that fanfiction is little more than erotica with no plot whatsoever.
However, these snobs miss a few important points. Of course
plot is a real thing that happens in fanfiction, sometimes in tremendous
complexity and well-executed technique. The other major thing they miss is that
yes, one does not have to create the characters from scratch. The challenge for
a fanfic author is just as large: we have to recreate a character already well
known and loved. This is already difficult when it’s a book character being
recreated, but when it’s a character who has been portrayed by an actor, the
visuals all need to be there as well. Every word spoken has to sound like the
way that character sounds, whereas with a book-only character, the reader was
already only imagining that voice for themselves. For a screen character, the
fanfic author needs to recreate every facial expression, nuance of tone of
voice, physical characterisation.
The main point I need to make here is that above all, a fanfic
author has a responsibility to recreate these characters as closely as possible
to their original sources, while also giving them a new situation to be in and
react to. Of course Sherlock and John would react different to something which
has never happened to them on the show so far, but within a certain range of
personality, and it’s that range which a fanfic author must respect. This is
something I find myself having to explain semi-regularly to people who don’t
seem to be quite clear on the concept of how writing fanfiction works. Or
writing fiction, period, works.
The narrative is something which depends very much on the
individual author and story. It can be very neutral, or if the author is
writing a close perspective, it could essentially be a long-running stream of
the main character/POV character’s inner monologue. In my stories, this is how
it usually works. So when the character has a thought that expresses an
opinion, this is, of course, the opinion of that character per my interpretation
of said character. Does that make sense? I consider it my first responsibility
to represent the things that that character would think or say or do. I don’t
use fiction as my personal vehicle for my own opinions. So if Sherlock wonders
to himself if non-penetrative sex counts as “real sex”, this is meant to be my
representation of a sexually-inexperienced character wondering what the precise
definitions of sexual activity are. Or if I have, as someone recently objected
to, Sherlock and John using guns and shooting people, it isn’t because I,
SilentAuror, personally feel that everyone should have a gun and use them to
shoot people who have wronged them in some way. This is solely my attempt to
write canon characterisations as closely and faithfully as I possibly can. I
hope that makes sense for everyone. If I want to write something to express my
personal opinion about something, that’s what I have a blog for. I can and do
write essays and articles about other things, wherein I can share my many, many
opinions and positions with the world, and I do. It’s definitely true that I
write stories that feature things I want to have happen in them, obviously, and
some of them involves my personal opinion on how things should go. But to
single out a line from the narrative/inner monologue and take the author to task
over it simply isn’t getting how writing works. I hope that clarifies a few things.
I have to say this because I’ve literally been accused of things like: wanting
all babies to die because I had Mary’s child be stillborn in a story, or
supporting infidelity because John and Sherlock get together while John is
still married to Mary, or hating all women because I deemed the actions of one female character criminal, or supporting gun violence in the United States because
someone in a story shot someone. It’s just not how that works. Just putting
that out there.
