I was just wondering about that kudos rate you mentioned and 10 % seemed really horribly low. But then I just read something for maybe the fifth time, because I love it so much. I've already commented, bookmarked and left kudos the first time around, so I

It is rather low, and I don’t know if this is still the case with most fandoms, but when this person told me this, it was about ten years ago. Things may have shifted. It’s about true for most of my stories, though, and you’re right - that doesn’t taken repeat reads into consideration!

On ao3 I can see my stories displayed by hits, kudos, bookmarks, or comment threads in my stats. If I look at my top three most popular stories for the hits/kudos ratio, let’s see:

Best of Three (posted February 2014): 71,246 hits, 3,019 kudos (4.2% kudos to hits)

Vena Cava (posted February 2014) : 33,584 hits, 1,641 kudos (4.9% kudos to hits)

Second Chance (posted May 2014): 33,474 hits, 2,133 kudos (6.4% kudos to hits)

So yeah, it’s not even 10%. I think that does vary with stories that get a lot of re-reads, though. It gets worse if you look at the ratio of comments, though.

Best of Three: 71,246 hits, 468 comments - except that half of those are my responses, because I consider it rude not to reply, so it’s actually 234 comments. That means that only 1/300 readers commented.

Just out of curiosity, I had a quick look at one of the most super-popular stories in the fandom just to see if it’s comparable. (I hope you don’t mind that I chose yours, @madlori!)

Performance in a Leading Role (posted July 2011) by @madlori. 511,512 hits, 10,483 kudos, 1,491 comments. Those numbers are incredible, of course! But percentage-wise, it breaks down to a 2% kudos to hits ratio, and even if I count all of the comment responses, 1/343 readers commented.

I’m not complaining per se - this is just the accepted reality of writing fanfic, and it’s why a lot of writers try to make the switch so that they’re at least getting money, if not feedback. And I mean this: I’m one of the lucky ones! I’m well aware that there are TONS of writers who are receiving far fewer hits, kudos, comments, bookmarks, recs, etc. I have a solid base of readership and I’m immensely grateful for them all! And I mean this, too: I don’t mind people lurking, just reading quietly and not saying anything. I’m also well aware that just because someone clicked on a fic doesn’t mean that they: a) finished it, or b) liked it. And personally, I’d far rather they didn’t say anything if they didn’t like it and just quietly hit the back button rather than have them leave hate in the comments.

Either way, what it comes down to is that I don’t think any of us are complaining! My comments on that post were more just meant to encourage people to take the time to say something to the artists and authors whose work they appreciate, that’s all! Have you really read stuff of mine five times???? That’s crazy! Thank you!!!

Oh yeah, I know. Don’t even get me started. It’s a medical impossibility. It’s barely credible that he was high, and he most certainly didn’t come anywhere near to having an overdose!! I sometimes say that I write my meta theories directly into my fics and this is one of the first things I tackled in my first post-TAB fic, Flesh and Blood and Heart and Bone: the question of the drugs, and the rather important follow-up question that nobody seems to be asking, at least not on my dash: if we’re saying it was an overdose, then did Sherlock attempt to commit suicide? And if so, why? This is a rather big question. But there wasn’t an overdose, and God only knows whether or not Mary’s an actual nurse/has any medical background at all, but the doctor present surely should have noticed that!

notfye:

Fic writers are honest to god like the best people on this earth. Like they write these massive stories that are better described as books and the only thing they ask for in payment is a review. Like seriously. These people spend months of time planning and writing and thinking and they don’t even get PAID. Fic authors are amazing and deserve the best, that is all

This is such a great post! If I can just add a bit to this, though…

Not only do fanfic authors not get paid in money, we also don’t generally get “paid” in reviews, either - the percentage of people who read is FAR greater than those who take the time to leave comments after. On ao3, there are a few different options: people can leave kudos, they can bookmark it, they can comment, or they can do any combination of the above. Years ago, someone who had been in fandom (a different one) and writing for a very long time told me that your fic is doing well if 10% of the people who read it left a kudos - the very smallest of possible gestures. 10%, that’s it. The percentage of people who leave comments in comparison to the hits is far smaller than that. I’m lucky - I have amazing readers who not only read my stuff in the first place (never something I underestimate!!), but also bathe me in kudos and bookmarks and thoughtful comments, but yeah: 10% for kudos is about right, less for everything else. And I’m one of the lucky ones.

Then bear in mind that on top of not getting paid in either money (which is the understanding going in!) OR comments (to a fair degree for the time put in, at least), we also PAY to do this in terms of getting hate. Every author I know has been “rewarded” for their time by getting crapped on by some asshole who’s never written a word in their life, or didn’t like a plot choice that was made and equates that to bad writing, or doesn’t like that the author chose a particular sexual position or the name of an OC or something equally trivial.

Reading a fic or looking at beautiful art is a bit like going to a concert where the entrance fee is “suggested donation”. The donation suggested here is some token of appreciation. It can be as small as kudos, which only takes a click for you, and may be the tiny gesture of support your author needs as encouragement to keep going, to know that it isn’t all a complete waste of time on their part. Because it does take time, and more than that, it takes love. So go and find an author or artist whose work you enjoy and give them a tiny slice of love somehow. <333

The way they touch each other is so endearing and intimate, but also, look at the way Ben touches himself while he’s waiting for Martin.

All I need is a brief cameo of Sally Donovan in s5 asking Sherlock is he’s scrubbed the floors of 221B recently and then just walking off while he stands there in shock.

Oh please oh please oh please

This is the dream

Oh God please
