Interview With A Fic Writer Meme

Thanks for the tag @tsarinatorment and apologies for the delay in answering.

Splitting off (again) just because the post was getting a bit long.

1. Your favourite fic that you’ve written (or the one you want to give a shout out to)

Gosh, this is so hard to choose. I think I’m going to go with The Lipstick. It was an unusual prompt and the fic just flowed.

Find it on AO3 here.

2. Your favourite fic title that you’ve come up with
That’s just as difficult as choosing a favourite fic!. I’m going to go with Sauvetage International

Find it on AO3 here.

3. How do you get inspiration to write?

Most of my fics ideas come from prompts either sent as asks or from ideas seen on Tumblr. I have to give a huge shout out to Gumnut for giving me one-word prompts that really tax the brain. You can blame her for The Lipstick.

4. Your favourite genre/subgenre of fic to write

Whump. Sorry, boys, but I like the hurt. Most of the time I’ll write the comfort if it is a complete fic, but I don’t always for a short. (Gives me an excuse to turn them into a fic later)

5. Do you have other hobbies?
I read, a lot. I love cross stitch and embroidery. And I love walking.

6. A fun fact about you that a lot of people may not know
Not sure about fun…most think that I have been writing for years, however I have only been writing a year. In fact, this Sunday just gone, the 19th, was my one-year writing anniversary.

7. Pick one character to self-project onto
This is difficult. I’d like to think that I was like the boys. I know I am caring, but I am also very shy – shut up, I absolutely am. I am very much the extrovert-introvert. I can engage well online, but I’m not brilliant at it IRL. I feel I am more like Brains, would prefer to squirrel myself away on a tropical (but temperate, I don’t like the heat) island and never meet people…

8. Favourite genre of music

Most people would never guess. But my favourite genre is Punk followed closely by Dance (90’s-00’s). But I am very eclectic in my tastes and have favourites in every genre, even in Mongolian and Russian folk music!

9. Your favourite singer/band

This changes depending on my mood, but the bands I listen to the most at the moment are The Clash and The Cure.

My favourite singer of all time is David Bowie.

10. How have your experience in fandom been?
On the whole it has been extremely positive. The Thunderfam on Tumblr is amazing, and I have to shout out some specific people who were instrumental in this.

@gumnut-logic – I wouldn’t have joined without your encouragement, and I have never regretted it.

@tsarinatorment – you and Nutty keep me sane. We swap ideas and discuss so much, and the two of you were there when I had my only blip in fandom and talked me round. I am so very pleased that you did.

@willow-salix – you encouraged me to publish my first ever story.

@soniabigcheese – I love our chats, and thanks for allowing me to dabble in your were-verse.

@the-original-sineater – our chats are awesome!

@nourelle-tracy and @bonsiiii-blog-blog – your support has been wonderful

@liseylou and @thundergeek59 – you constantly comment on my fics and make me very happy.

There are so many more I could name…thank you all for being here and putting up with me!

This has been passed on to sooo many people that I have no idea who’s been tagged or not, so if you have been tagged before then I apologise.

Tagging: @such-a-random-rambler @scribbles97 @halorocks1214 and @helloliriels

💌 OMG Thank you for the tag! @janetm74 - just getting back to some modicum of feeling normal (new meds! yay!) and can respond with some focus! 💌

🤍 Your Favorite Fic That You’ve Written)?

Playing Cupid’ An ASIP re-writing of wrongs. ‘Cause I think it just might be my masterpiece. Before that was def Hope Eternala post- TRF fix-it. For making me cry buckets of tears while I tried to type it up …

🤍Your Favorite Fic Title That You’ve Created?

Ooohhh! Naming is fun, I really enjoyed making ’Rock Out With Your Lock Out’ but that’s not really a fic? So - ’Keep Us From Falling’ would be my second (post-TRF, Una tribute).

🤍How Do You Get Inspo to Write)?

Usually something someone says to me, or a song I hear. More a feeling (mood) than anything? And then I hear John + Sherlock talking in my head, and I try to start writing down what scene they are acting out. Thankfully, they don’t seem to mind how often I need them to rewind …

🤍Your Favorite Genre to Write?

Angst/Misunderstanding with a Happy Ending. Any setting, as long as they get some tooth-rotting fluff at the end. I seriously need a dentist …

🤍Do You Have Other Hobbies?

📚🎮🎨💃🎤🎧🎭🎮📚 … haha.

🤍A Fun Fact (that people may not know about you)?

Lirielbaenre was my WoW main for 7 years. With Liriels, Opera, Hazelra, Hylia, Sheikah, Mythria, Eulalia, Symbelmyrne, Ygdrassil, and Lothlorien.

🤍 Pick One Character to Self-Project Onto?

Sherlock. The human side. I usually need a Watson. And they make me feel a little less at a loss with social situations. I feel like he has my kind of energy, and how I fill every possible minute of the day not wanting to sleep/eat unless someone else requires it. Especially when I’m really 'zoned’ and lose all sense of time.

🤍Favorite Genre of Music?

Alternative / Indie Rock. I like songs that make you feel something, and actually have something to say.

🤍 Your Favorite Singer/Band?

A Fine Frenzy. Alison Sudol.

🤍 How Has Your Experience in Fandom Been?

Honestly, amazing. It helped me through this past year in so many ways. It’s like a treasure hunt every day. New stuff, old stuff, crossover stuff!! I can’t get over how amazing it all is. This fandom is insane and awesome and hilarious. Big or small fry, new or old, returning or just discovering … I’m here for it. Say hi anytime!

@johnlocky & @ohlooktheresabee for introducing me to the world of podfics. @elldotsee for hosting bi-weekly fic chat groups!!! @finalproblem for the Sherlockian Watchalongs (wednesdays) #the giant chat of sumatra to join in and say hi! And also @inevitably-johnlocked & @swissmissficrecs for always having some good reads to share with us!!

Tagging @fluffbyday-smutbynight @arwamachine @simplyclockwork @calaisreno @discordantwords @ohlooktheresabee @johnlocky if you wanna join in!

Awww thanks @helloliriels for the tag :’) though I probably should be writing instead of answering questions (say hi to my huge imposter syndrome)

1. Your favourite fic that you’ve written (or the one you want to give a shout out to)

It’s like asking what’s my favourite child… and having written just two (proper fics), I’ll just leave them here: “Three Sad thoughts, Danced” and “Wrong. Number!

2. Your favourite fic title that you’ve come up with

Must be “(Full) Contact With Nature”. Gotta love puns. Titles are so freaking hard to come up with, btw.

3. How do you get inspiration to write?

Prompts (either requested or stray ones), music, quotes… anything can be inspiration with the right attitude.

4. Your favourite genre/subgenre of fic to write

Honestly, I don’t know yet - I’m trying my hand at different stuff - but for now… I certainly love domestic fluff, and to pepper it with some humour, teasing and flirting.

5. Do you have other hobbies?

Hahaha name it, I’ve got it. I’ve dabbled in most creative hobbies, and perpetually cycle through them. A big one and a constant, though, is cooking.

6. A fun fact about you that a lot of people may not know

I can’t go out of the house without someone asking me for directions. It happens constantly, it happened in foreign countries too. Maybe I look like I know shit (which I don’t, most of times). Maybe I look approachable? Maybe it’s a curse.

7. Pick one character to self-project onto

John Watson. Smol angry bean. Bisexual disaster. Lover of jumpers.

8. Favourite genre of music

Can’t say I’ve got a single favourite genre, it depends a lot on what I feel like listening to (and what kind of music I’m hyperfixating on at any given time). Let’s say I’m partial to instrumental music, be it classical, jazz, funk, post-rock and everything in between. It’s all about the feels.

9. Your favourite singer/band

Again, hard to pinpoint just one but… I’ve had an unhealthy obsession with Queen since I was a kid, and I frankly know too much about them.

10. How have your experience in fandom been?

Fantastic! I was so alone and I owe you so much :’)

Special mention to:

@helloliriels for involving me in beta-reading/editing each other’s stuff. Best partner in crime ever

@foul-milk - bond over Sherlock, end up talking about anything and everything. Luv u bestie

and to all the writers, meta writers, gif makers, artists… you’re all so talented and I find myself amazed every. single. day.

tagging (no pressure): @totallysilvergirl @7-percent @calaisreno @silentauroriamthereal @mythandbullshit

Oh, thanks for the tag, @fluffbyday-smutbynight!! Okay, let’s see…

1. Your favourite fic that you’ve written (or the one you want to give a shout out to)

Ahhh, so hard! This question gets harder every time I’m asked, since I now have (*checks*) 89 posted fics in this fandom. Um… let me think. The ones that come most immediately to mind as the ones that I’m always extra pleased that someone liked are probably Against the Rest of the World, The Wisteria Tree, Bridging the Ravine, a couple of my more difficult stories like Scars, Rebuilding Rome, Sine Nomine… I don’t know, that’s probably enough, right??

2. Your favourite fic title that you’ve come up with

Oh jeez. Um. Off the top of my head…

Against the Rest of the World (such an iconic line!)

Sine Nomine (the title, meaning “without name/nameless” comes from both the nameless village in the story, as well as Sherlock and John’s never-named feelings for each other)

Rosa Felicia - this story is about Rosie (Rose) at age 19, and a running theme is Sherlock’s pet names for her, which are all botannical rose species names. He’ll give her the nickname, then wait expectantly for her to describe the species to him

All of my flower-themed titles: The Green Carnations (a Janine POV about her short-lived “relationship” with Sherlock and her sinking realization all along that he was very fact, and very specifically for John), The Yellow Poppies (a dual-villain story about Magnussen and Mary and their threats to Sherlock after he was shot), The White Lotuses (a slow-burn with a leitmotif of lotus symbolism in Hinduism), The Red Roses (a story of Molly being a total hero and getting Sherlock and John together in spite of her own feelings), and The Wisteria Tree (an amnesia story that heavily features memories of a specific wisteria tree in Sussex).

3. How do you get inspiration to write?

It’s my driving need for revenge against Moftiss for ruining my beloved canon to fix the canon and get Sherlock and John to communicate at last, because once that actually happens, it’s inevitable that they get together. Obviously.

4. Your favourite genre/subgenre of fic to write

I’m really at my best in the novella-length category, 30-60k. Here in the fic world, it’s generally canon extension with drama and romance. My original novel (based on Against the Rest of the World with pieces of Vena Cava and a lot of new material) classifies as a literary thriller. With a gay romantic subplot, obviously.

5. Do you have other hobbies?

People have time for hobbies? Um, let’s see… I’m kind of a work-out fanatic. Covid forced me to get a lot more creative when my gym closed, so I learned a bunch of new things and kept them now that both my gym and local pools are open again. I use ellipticals for HIIT cardio, I run, I swim laps, I do a horrendous living room bodyweight calisthenics routine that I adopted for Covid (fun fact: John stole my routine for The Secret of Hazel Grange!), I lift weights, I cross-country ski in winter, and I average around 12 km of walking per day when I’m at work. So there’s that. I also love cooking (in case that wasn’t clear from my fics!), am a RuPaul’s Drag Race superfan, a lover of Great British Bake-off, a foodie in general, love movies (especially trashy Marvel movies, sorry @totallysilvergirl, hahaha!), and post-Covid I can’t wait to get back to a spa. One day!

6. A fun fact about you that a lot of people may not know

I’m a massive commitment-phobe. I’ve been trying to commit to a single tattoo design and location for seven years now and my best friend, bless his infinite patience with me, has been waiting and waiting and waiting. Ahhh!

7. Pick one character to self-project onto

Sherlock all the way. Sharp-cornered, over-thinker, Capricorn, can’t even with his emotions, generally misunderstood and undervalued by the world around him. Yeah.

8. Favourite genre of music

When music is a job, you don’t stop loving it, but you sort of stop enjoying it, lol. Even when I was still singing as my Main Thing, I almost never listened to music recreationally. That’s actually where the “silent” part of my nomenclature stems from. I guess I do love classical music. These days I mostly listen to whatever I’m working out to, which tends to be stuff like Imagine Dragons, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. I absolutely LOATHE eighties music. LOATHE. Give me nineties alternative, punk, metal, but keep that neon trash away from me. Lol.

9. Your favourite singer/band

I just don’t have one. But @fluffbyday-smutbynight said Queen and that’s a pretty solid answer, so… Queen. Lol.

10. How have your experience in fandom been?

Honestly, the very best and very worst experiences I’ve had, but the former vastly outweigh the latter. The latter include things like death threats, invitations to kill myself, emails from sockpuppet accounts to say nasty things about my writing or my interpretation/understanding of the canon, etc. But the best?? Omg. This fandom has literally saved me, in just about every possible way. Saved me from feeling as undervalued as the external world definitely finds me, saved me from depression and anxiety over and over again, saved me financially, more than once, saved me just by being there and being a community that’s literally incomparable. I love you all and I’m so glad I found my way back into fandom years after I thought I was out. <333333333333333333

You’re unattached, just like me. Fine. Good.

I’m sorry but literally HOWWWWW can this be read as anything other than 1) Sherlock is GAAAYYYYY and 2) John is AT MINIMUM intrigued by that prospect.

(I’m aware my sentence was posed as a question but it’s rhetorical and I will not be entertaining arguments at this time or indeed ever thank you)

And Moffat had the nerve to say that Sherlock would never have moved in with John if he thought that John was a temptation, so Sherlock can’t be gay.

So why did you basically make him say that he is, asshat?

Because queerbaiting means you can rope in people who have eyes and therefore can see the ship you’ve set up so perfectly, but also not have to face any backlash for writing a canon gay ship by not actually going through with it. Easy-peasy! It’s how to approach life as an extremely privileged, smug, self-satisfied man. Only supreme privilege means you can see absolutely everything as a joke and face accountability for none of it.
