Coincidentally I am currently reading one of your stories and I bloody love it. I have read several of your stories and have loved those as well. I haven’t left comments on AO3 because I am relatively new to this fandom and after someone wrote some nasty comments to me about something I posted, I decided to live life as a lurker. But I hope my comment and love for your writing leaves you with a better feeling than the dickish comment you received.

Oh wow, thank you so much for this!! You’re so nice! Which story are you reading?? :) I’m so sorry you had that experience, that sucks! As for mine, no pressure to comment at all - this made my day! <333333333333333

One time I discovered that someone graded fics in their bookmarks, and mine got a “D”

Ugh, that is SO rude!!! Grading people’s stories in general is so rude, no matter what grade you give it! Again, if you want to make it a private bookmark, just for yourself, as a reminder, like “the one with the dead bird scene, gross, do not reread”, FINE - just make it private!! Ditto for your own private rating system or whatever. I’m sorry that happened to you. :/

People be dicks, yo

People do realize that the authors on ao3 can see the public bookmark comments that readers leave, right?

Listen: I’m all for bookmark comments. I get wanting to leave one, either for yourself or for other people. Just know that if you leave it set to “public”, then everyone, including the author of the fic, can see it. I just got a rude bookmark comment from someone, so just for funsies I went to their page on ao3. They haven’t written anything themselves, but have a long list of rude bookmark comments, all of which are public. The one on mine says “Very case heavy and not at all light-hearted. Also in first person POV which is decidedly not my favourite.”

Lol. The fic is tagged with, among others, “Reichenbach Return”, “drama”, and “first person POV”. It’s also 152,000 words long. So yeah, I would rather HOPE that it’s not light on plot in general, and the POV warning is right there in the tags. Deciding to read a first person POV for 152K words and then complaining about it at the end is a bit like going for a seven-course dinner and then complaining that you don’t care for food. DUDE, YOU SIGNED UP FOR IT. YOU COULD HAVE BACKSPACED OUT OF THERE ANYTIME AT ALL. But you didn’t. Instead, you chose to leave a dickish comment about my fic. Publicly, so that you could be sure that I would see it. And that anyone else who happens to click on the bookmarks could also see it. You didn’t leave it as a comment on the fic, where the author would have the power to, say, respond, and/or invite you into a dialogue about the story, about the stylistic choice to have written it in first person POV, etc. You just wanted to be a dick.

Friendly reminder that your neighbourhood fic writers are people with feelings, who do this as a hobby, to share in the love of these characters and these fandoms with other people in our communities here online. Try not to be dicks to them.

I’m someone who talks a lot about fighting the patriarchy - part of that is understanding the ways I have internalised it. If we see that a doctor is always a guy on television, that’s what we think of when we think of a doctor.

Are you a Gold Star lesbian? (Just in case you don't know what it means, a Gold Star lesbian is a lesbian that has never had sex with a guy and would never have any intentions of ever doing so)

This is a weird question. First off, I’ve never identified as a lesbian in the first place. I’m bi. Secondly, I utterly reject this notion of a ranking system for people’s “veracity” of sexual identification. Sexuality can be a very fluid and changeable thing, something which evolves or just shifts as people age, as different people, influences, circumstances, and/or self-discoveries occur. Having had sex with any person or type of people is no marker or detractor from someone’s self-designated sexual identity and policing it with a system like this strikes me as being rather prejudiced and exclusionary. A lesbian is not less of a lesbian, or in some way a lower quality lesbian just because she never knew that she was a lesbian until she knew her own preferences after having had experiences that were less satisfying, or until the day she met the woman who made all the pieces fall into place at last. Sometimes people need to experiment to find out what it is they truly prefer, like, are, etc. Sometimes what people like changes. Sometimes it depends on the person they’re with. It’s an incredibly personal journey, and self-discovery isn’t something that’s settled by the time we’re sixteen - it’s a lifelong process and one that continues change as we grow, as our lives change. Sometimes that means that sexuality or gender identity can change with it, sometimes not. It really depends on every individual.

I would never judge a woman for not knowing from age 3 that she’s a lesbian and accidentally “marring” her perfect record of lesbian-ness. There’s such a strongly heteronormative influence in the world, so much pressure to fit into all of the boxes that make a woman “acceptable”, to want to get married to a man in a ceremony where her male parent gives her away like a troublesome and expensive parcel to be delivered into the safe keeping of another man, to want to have and raise children, to want to keep a house and juggle a career on top of it, blah blah blah. That pressure is STRONG, and I don’t blame anyone for not realizing immediately that that pre-set model of womanhood isn’t necessarily for her.

On a final point, I see that you’re a spam blog and not even following me, so I’ll just say that I’m only answering this - and publicly - because this notion of some lesbians being more valid than others is complete shit and I’m more than happy to share my opinion on that with all of my followers.
