Hey, look at this!! My story Right Hand Man just reached 30,000...
Hey, look at this!! My story Right Hand Man just reached 30,000 hits today!! That’s so very exciting! Of my 87 posted stories in this fandom, this is the 15th to have attained this milestone, which is really cool! This is a hurt/comfort story wherein John loses the use of his left arm from the elbow down. Mary, about to give birth, thinks it will be too much to have to deal with both a newborn without much help, as well as coping with John as he struggles with his newfound disability, physiotherapy schedule, and the depression that goes with it, so she asks Sherlock to take him back to Baker Street. Which, of course, he does - Sherlock takes on the role of supporter and partner in John’s transition into life without the use of his dominant hand/arm.
When I first posted this story, I got a lot of private emails (and a few public comments) on the subject of writing about disability, and I was immensely relieved that all the folk out there who either live permanently with the loss of a limb like this, particularly a loss that occurred well into adult life (aka, having to adjust to the loss, rather than never having had the use of both hands (or legs in some of your cases)) seemed to feel that I wrote this accurately. My mom also worked in disability advocacy for a long time when I was a kid, so while I am a “typically abled” person, if I may, I hope that I did manage to represent both the physical and emotional struggles of an adjustment like this, particularly the inner struggles of anger/blame, depression/apathy, wanting help/not wanting to need help/being resentful of not being offered help, feelings of being less attractive/masculine/etc, but most particularly in the specific lens of John Watson and his own pre-existing conditions going into a situation like this. Anyway, I could blather on, but I’ll spare you! I’m so pleased by every one of these hits and all the love you guys have left for this story!! Thanks for reading it!
