Dollars and Sense
I’ve never been rich, per se. I certainly climbed my way out of the ‘middle class’ into the ‘upper middle class’ when my branding business blew up after a few years in Los Angeles, but wealthy is a goal post that keeps retreating toward the horizon.
Of course, I still intend to reach that goal — being wealthy — I just hadn’t made my millions quite yet when I decided to leave the path I was on, and now I have a very different view of wealth and the role it plays in my life.
When I left that traj...

Reality vs Practical Reality
The reality is the movie, TV, and video game industries are leaky sieves, and are quite possibly losing lots of money to pirates who procure and distribute their work for free online. In return, these industries have taken measures to stop the leaks — lacing their work with draconian digital rights management software and other tricks that punish legitimate users more than pirates.
The practical reality is if you create content, it will be stol...

The Right Hands
The wrong tools in the right hands is far better than the opposite.

Monkey Butlers
This piece was originally published in Exiles.
One of my long-term goals is to be the kind of person who could be dropped onto an uninhabited island and survive with nothing but my wits and physical capabilities. To not only survive, but flourish. To build a coconut radio. And when the rescue party arrives, to have built a tiny island paradise, complete with monkey butlers and a wooden roller coaster.
That might be a small exaggeration, but it is a guiding principle of how I operate and what I...

Launch Days
This is a piece I originally posted on Facebook.
Launch days are torturous, amazing experiences.
On one hand, you’re scrambling to make sure all the links in a dozen different posts point where they should, spending hours spot-testing social media buttons and sending out dozens, if not hundreds, of emails and other correspondences. It’s frantic and crazy and you may forget to eat or drink anything until dinner time.
On the other hand, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with people that you haven’t...

The Cake
The following in an excerpt from my new book, Act Accordingly, which hits physical and digital shelves today. If you like it, consider snagging a copy or sharing this excerpt (or the one over at The Minimalists) with a friend!
There are many ways to label a person.
I’m a white, male, United States citizen, who is left-handed.
I’m also a blue-eyed, non-political, atheist, and I like Doritos.
These labels help define me, but they are not me. They sketch a map to where I can be found, but they are n...

Meandering
Why are you sitting at your computer? Why are you taking a break from something to read this? Why are you spending a good deal of your time working on whatever it is you’re taking a break from? And why is that thing important to you?
It’s a question we don’t ask often enough, and it’s amazing what a difference an honest answer can make in how you approach life.
Consider that asking “Why?” is tantamount to asking, “What?” — as...

More Than You Need
The idea is to get in your head the image of an author — someone from before the computer. Before the transistor, even. Someone who has only been in black-and-white photos, or sepia-toned daguerreotypes.
Real old school. This person maybe used a typewriter, or more likely, wrote their work by hand. You’ve seen examples of their handwriting, something that you don’t see too often anymore. I’ve never seen any of my friends’ handwriting, unless the...
