Make It So: Procedural Jogging

The exercise treadmills at my apartment complex are pretty neat – beyond a variety of options (including a game of Solitaire), they have an option to show a video that simulates walking at a location. Basically it gives you something to look at beside your heart rate, has interesting historical notes, and provides an interesting experience. Running indoors can be a might boring, and it’s an appreciated addition I take advantage of because, hey, when am I going to get to jog through scenic par...

Update – Way With Worlds

OK, so where am I with Way With Worlds? Here, let’s break it into bullet points to make it easier.

I am/will be putting in the prereader feedback soon. That’s a bit behind, but that’s the way it goes. I hope to do this by EOM. Then the book ships to my editor, which is easy because that’s called “asking my roommate to do it.” My roommate is a professional tech writer and document manager, so it’s going to be some serious quality work. I hope for the editing to take two months with a month fo...

Update: The Power Of Creative Paths

So I’ve not talked about this much here, but now it deserves it’s own post – because my first Seventh Sanctum inspired book is coming up – and it’s not Way With Worlds (which is going to editor in a bit, more later).

It’s called “The Power Of Creative Paths,” and it’s a book on how people come up with Big Ideas – specifically, the five different ways that they do it. This is the one I’ve called “The Creativity Book” because . . . OK to be fair I didn’t have a good name yet.

Working on Generat...

NaNoGenMo 2015 – Random Novel Generation Contest!

Link Here

A context to create randomly generated books? I’m so there – though it sounds like it’s got a way to go in some areas. Do dig the idea of a choose-your-own-adventure book.

Update – Latest Generator!

Yes, if you’re over at Seventh Sanctum you know I’m working on a Reality Show Generator. Here’s the latest update.

This oneinvolved me doing more in-depth data analysis before building it. In many cases (not all) I sort of dive into the generator and build as I analyze. In this case I stepped back and broke the data down – something I usually only do for generators with more obvious patterns like the .

The results were:

The breakdown was revealing. The breakdown wasrea...

Procedural Content – An Invisible Service

A friend of mine recently found Jukedeck – a service that will randomly generate music for you. Depending on your membershipyou get to download randomly made music and have assorted rights to it.

It’s fairly obvious from my work at Seventh Sanctum that I love randomized stuff. Also as I’m a big proponent of Roguelike games and procedural content in things like Borderlands, I’m really biased.

But looking at Jukedeck I began thinking that they (and me to an extent) have explored procedural cont...

The (Literal) Joy Of Networking

So over Thanksgiving I did some networking. I should note it’s no exactl intentional – I do it automatically as I like it

A lot of people don’t like Networking, and my theory on that is simple – we get taught to make a natural human activity (socailizing) into work. It’s not fun which is what it should be.

Over Thanksgiving:

I met Neale Bayly, who does motorcycle demonstrations for good causes, writes on his experiences, and in general seems to be someone who would normally be fictional char...

Sailor Moon: In The Name Of The Moon I’ll Hug You

Well it’s time to start posting regular updates on this whole effort, so here’s a regular update. About the whole effort.

If you’re not familiar with whats going on, I and my co-author Bonnie are doing a book on Sailor Moon. Specificly, we’re examining how it impacted women in North America by A) interviewing various women, and B) Seeing what impacts we see as common.

Simple, but effective – so I want to do updates reguarly.

So right now we’re writing chapters on the titular heroine of Sailor...

The Inevitable Trump Column

OK, fine after hearing about Trump repeatedly, I figured I should weigh in because everyone else has and I’m bad and shutting up.

Besides, I have a few observations I figure are worth sharing.

THIS IS HIS NEXT THING: Trump has pretty much committed to politics; he’s defined his brand and burnt many bridges. I may not be sure how wise he is, but I can’t see these decisions being made without some idea of implications.

HE WANTS HIS OWN PARTY: Trump owns things, he puts his name on them, and it’...

Steve’s Update 12/6/2015

Sorry for not being as chatty lately – you know how it goes. Holidays and all! So let’s get an update.

The Sailor Moon book is now in the process of writing – in fact I’m on to chapter 5 and my co-author is working on chapter 4 this week. We expect to have the book in editable format end of January. Then of course there’s the EDITING part . . . still not gonna finish until fall of 2016 I’m afraid. Way With Worlds came back from pre-readers and this month I’m integrating the feedback – THEN i...
