Evolution of a Page – A Teddy Bear Tale II Page Nine Pencil

Pencil of Page Nine of A Teddy Bear Tale by Dan Nokes

Pencil of Page Nine of A Teddy Bear Tale by Dan Nokes

Following up from the first Evolution of a Page – A Teddy Bear Tale II Page Nine Rough we move to the pencil, here we get to see all the details that will be on the page and is my last chance to make any changes before we move to color. In this case Dan has filled in the all details of the planes and put the Toy Train onto its tracks, this is it before I see the finished version. Very little direction is needed by me now, with only the suggestion that the real world elements fade into the background on the completed illustration…

This is the second stage of the illustration process. To learn more about A Teddy Bear Tale II and view the first six pages of this book featuring the new adventures of Tristan please click here.

Evolution of a Page – A Teddy Bear Tale II Page Nine Rough

Page Nine from A Teddy Bear Tale

Art Rough of Page Nine of A Teddy Bear Tale by Dan Nokes

“Suddenly the air was filled with flying corks and screaming down from above was a pair of No Names in bright red biplanes.”

Over the next couple of days we are going to follow the evolution of a page from A Teddy Bear Tale II from rough to finished illustration. The illustration is by Dan Nokes, our Teddy Bear Tale artist and this is how the page takes shape from description to fully realized image.  The rough image above is the first step in the process as our characters leap from prose to illustration. In this case Tristan & Wilma are over flying the Toy Train, and are about to be attacked by a pair of No Names in Biplanes, a fairly action packed and dynamic scene, which the rough demonstrates. From the rough I can approve it and move onto pencils; at this point I’m pretty happy with the rough and added a few notes about the popguns, the environment the dog fight is about to take part in and they should be flying over the Toy Train as it makes it break towards Safe Harbor.

Big Bad Baltimore Blow Up or aka that bloody big storm that hit us Friday night…

Storm Damage on 06/30/2012Did we all enjoy that storm that came barreling through Friday night? It hit us with no real warning and was pretty wild. It knocked out power all over Maryland and some of you are still out as I type this. We were pretty lucky here we only lost power for about three hours, so when the morning came along with those insane triple digit temperatures we at least had the ability to keep ourselves cool. In all here in our part of Essex we received a little damage, the worse being that downed tree just a block up from us, it did get windy and at one point I thought the pool was going collapse, but we got very lucky.

But what about that storm? It is called a Derecho, which is really just a big wind storm like a hurricane, but unlike a hurricane were the winds don’t swirl. Instead they blow in a straight line much like an arrow, powered by all the hot air that was building up all week they move very rapidly and hit just as hard as hurricane in a straight line.  In fact this storm moved so rapidly we barely got any warning!!! Luckily for us all the follow-up Derecho that was due to hit us on Saturday night swerved to the South, and we only got mini-me version of this weather condition early Monday morning.  They say a Derecho only appears once ever 5-10 years and we got two and a bit in 48 hours? Me thinks, we are going to see a lot more extreme weather over the next few years…

So… I would like again to refer you to my handy-dandy Hurricane Preparation List and urge you all to have emergency supplies close at hand just in case. To learn more about the Hurricane Preparation List Click Here.

Stay safe my friends…

Why watch Ted? Instead read ‘Imagine This’ the original badly behaved living Teddy Bear Comic

Clovis, the alcohol-abusing teddy bear featured in Lucas Turnbloom's comic 'Imagine This.'

Clovis, the teddy bear featured in Lucas Turnbloom’s comic ‘Imagine This.’

Planning on watching Ted this weekend? Before you do you should check out ‘Imagine This’ by Lucas Turnbloom, the original story of a badly behaved living Teddy Bear named Clovis. You might be forgiven to think that many of the scenes and sequences you see in the movie are very similar… Well… That’s because they may will be… Check out Imagine This by clicking here.

The difference is Imagine This is a cartoon strip that started way back in 2005, and Ted is live-action movie written by stale ‘three joke’ Seth Macfarlene  he of Family Guy fame, you know a fart joke, Stewie does something age inappropriate and Pete falls over. Of course the Macfarlene camp claim no knowledge of the comic strip, even though when Family Guy started the character of Stewie looked and acted might similar to Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth, a character from Chris Ware’s popular comic “Acme Novelty Library. It was claimed then everything was coincidental, even though the similarities were too coincidental to really be that…

Could it be originality and Mr Macfarlene are two very separate items? Is this a case of Hollywood stealing another idea from an Indie knowing they could bury any claims in litigation for eternity? I know this burns me up seeing this happen and it makes me wonder just how safe are our creations if someone richer, and no morals wants to take it for their own? Guard your works well my friends… And do yourself a favor give Ted a miss… I suspect you wont be missing any life changing experiences, and instead check out Imagine This.

Thanks to Ryan Fisher for bringing the article Syndicate: ‘Ted’ Look Familiar to Fans of Imagine This Comic Strip from Editor and Publisher to my notice.

First Look at the release trailer for Judge Dredd the Movie

Karl Urban as Judge DreddWe’ve seen hints, glimpses and leaks, but now the first full trailer for Dredd the Movie is here. While the environment doesn’t have the technolunacy of the world in the 2000AD books, it is a fitting look and melds nicely with the grittiness of what a Judge Dredd movie should be. The Judges look like urban warriors, the city does look dangerous and on the edge. Don’t take me word for it, check out the trailer above, from the looks of it we have what the Judge Dredd movie should be about.
