The Comic Book Convention That Banned Cosplayers

[image error]Yes, you read that right, Elite Con – a very small pop-culture collectible convention down in Florida is riding the waves of social media drama by banning Cosplayers from their show, and as you can imagine across the cosplay community a tsunami of condemnation hit their Facebook page.

This news first came to light via Bleeding Cool – the leading website for click-bait headlines and breaking pop-culture news (based on little more speculation). You can read their poke-the-bear take on this conventions unconventional stance here.

This Has To Be Said First

Before I go any further into this commentary, I feel it is very important to say I’ve don’t have an issue with cosplay, I see them mostly as superfans and those that I do know personally are great folk, who have a greater comic book/pop-culture knowledge than me. and have on occasion allowed me to take a bathroom break by watching over my table.

I have no issue with cosplay in general. None… Zero… Got it? Okay, I will continue…

That being said, I’ve been travelling to conventions for almost a decade now and seen cosplay explode from fan creation into its own industry, that is competing in the same space as me and I like many who are Artists or Vendors have experienced the negative side of cosplay, that does go out of control. I’ve suffered through a long weekend of having my booth blocked by cosplayer (my lost weekend at VA Comicon), had my display table used as a storage area for their food as they have their photo taken, had customers squeezed away and dealt with more than one Cosplayer who thinks they have to kayfabe the character. But, beyond a very specks in what is a mutual show relationship, Cosplayers are just superfans of the genre they like.

The Issue

The issue here is a pop-culture convention going against the grain of other pop-culture conventions. There is already a perceived artist/vendor v cosplay shadow war going on at conventions – mainly due to the behavior of a select few self-entitled cosplayers and the artist/vendors pushing back against it. This cosplay ban only serves to further this non-existent issue, by making cosplayers cry ‘victim’ when in reality they really aren’t.

Look Beyond The Headline

Elite Con is a very, very small convention, about 3500sq ft which is tiny, the convention does not have room for some of the more outlandish cosplay outfits and is promoting itself as a serious convention for collectors only. They are positioning themselves to be something very different in this landscape, much more inline with coin, or sports memorabilia shows.

Elite Con has a right as a private entity hiring the space to set up a dress code for their show, if they feel cosplay is a thing they don’t want, then it is their right as the event organizer to act upon it. Is is shortsighted? Maybe… Will it hurt Elite Con if they grow, most likely.

My understanding this decision to ban cosplay was brought about over concerns about space, not any malice towards cosplayers in general, maybe as Elite Con grows and is able to expand they will become more cosplay friendly. We just have to wait and see.

Vote With Your Feet

The Elite Con Facebook page has been bombarded since they announced their cosplay ban, especially when it is being badly reported, or aimed at a vocal community like cosplay. It is so easy to outraged on the internet, to follow the herd and say this is outrageous, when really you are not sure why it is an outrageous thing. You do have a right to express your opinion, but don’t be a jerk about it.

If you don’t like Elite Con’s policies then vote with your feet and $$$’s, if you are in the area don’t attend the show, conventions live and die on foot traffic and word of mouth, and while Elite Con is trying to be something different, appealing directly to the collector, they may have made a misstep here. But it is only a small show and it is not like Wizard World is saying… No More Cosplay.

Perspective Peeps…

The Battle For Our Reality Starts On The Streets of Baltimore – The Tether Saga Begins

Welcome to the Tether Saga as the nature of reality starts to change and our only protection against the oncoming darkness is the Keeper of The Tether, the Warden that has kept our reality safe for generations.
The only problem, the new Keeper of Tether came by it purely by accident and she doesn’t want anything to do with her new role. Forget destiny, forget being the chosen one, this is the story of Sarah Taylor, a High School Senior who is thrown into a world that is disturbingly familiar, but has a terrifying evil stalking its shadows, and we are along for the ride. Her only guide is CT, the Grandson of the original Keeper of the Tether and the Tether can summon an Angelic Guardian to protect her… Well, if she can figure out how to make that happen… Or even how to remove the Tether.

Welcome to the world of the Tether, this is a new paranormal action adventure series set in Baltimore, written by Nick Davis & Katrina Roets. We explore this new reality with Sarah Taylor, the most reluctant of Keepers the Tether has ever had. Having come by it after a horrifying series of events we follow her through one terrifying night, as she must master the Tether just to survive!

Released by Altworld Studios as a first of a series of narrative books, the Tether Saga starts an adventure series that takes the entire paranormal adventure genre and dumps it neatly on its head. Part horror, part action packed adventure with a paranormal undercurrent, the first book in this series gives you a glimpse of a world where everything is not as it appears. This may think this is a classic good vs evil struggle, it is far from it and you will be watching the shadows a little closer once you begin this saga.

To celebrate the release of The Tether, Altworld Studios is running a special Countdown Sale for the Kindle edition of this novel, the retail price is $3.99, but for the next 24 hours the Tether is only $0.99

Release Day Special Only $0.99 (was $3.99)

(Kindle Edition)
Something evil is stalking the streets of Baltimore, our only hope is the new Keeper of the Tether – Sarah Taylor. The only problem, she doesn’t want it and her only guide to this new world she has stumbled into is CT, the Grandson of the original Keeper, who really wants the Tether back with his family and Sarah is quite happy to give it back – if the Tether actually lets her remove it.

If that wasn’t a problem enough; Sarah and CT find themselves being hunted by a Demon, a Psychotic Killer and a Shadowy Society; all wanting the power of the Tether for their own nefarious plans. At least Sarah can summon an Angelic Guardian for protection, if she can only figure out how to make that happen and use the power locked in the Tether to help her.

Watch the shadows as the battle for our reality is only just beginning… Set against the real backdrop of Baltimore city this urban paranormal action adventure by Nick Davis & Katrina Roets – follows Sarah through a helter-skelter, one night journey into a reality that is disturbingly familiar, but has an unnatural evil stalking its shadows.

Hey DCEU! Is It Time To Put The Man Back Into Superman?

[image error]I have never made any secret of my bitter disappointment in the DCEU movies and the almost criminally mishandling of the characters and their core values. However what they did to Superman was a crime, sacrificing his values on the altar of building a franchise… When really all they needed to do was put the man into Super.

His Greatest Strength

I have always said that Superman‘s greatest strength is not his powers, but his heart, this example exert from the Superman: Grounded comic written by J. Michael Straczynski

[image error] [image error] [image error] [image error] [image error] [image error] [image error]

By waiting, identifying and then bonding, Superman did more than just save the day, he saved and changed a life. Sure he could have flown up there, grabbed her and it would have been all over in a second, but would he have saved her? This is where his heart is all important, and it is this reason, above all else why we desperately need this Superman back on the silver screen. We need his example to remind us of just how great we as people can be. We need hope and idealism to conquer apathy and cynicism. We need our greatest hero to come back out of the wilderness… We should all be super… MAN.

Stranger In A Strange Land: The Burden Of A Second Generation Conservative

[image error]I try my best to never be political on my blog, I do try, some times it creeps into my social media, mainly when I see a lunacy of an action, but writing a blog polarizes more than it ever heals and frankly with how partisan the USA politics have become the hassle of dealing with extreme supporters of the left or right, just isn’t worth it. Sometimes though I cannot be silent, and the Presidential election here in the USA has made it harder to be the silent observer and being a second generation conservative that silence has to be broken. So, for what they are worth here are my thoughts of being a second generation Conservative, a stranger in a strange land.

Second Generation, What?

Yes, you read that right. I identify politically as a conservative, but before you go off on a rant about how could you, after all you write stories about Teddy Bears, you’re an artist, you’re a writer, you’re supposed to be a Liberal, I will offer this explanation.

You see my father is a conservative in the UK, I grew up with conservative values of personal and fiscal responsibility, my home town Melton Mowbray is a huge conservative town. My father also taught me to listen to both sides of the argument, to gather my own opinions and always be your own man. Thankfully I grew up in the UK, so at least I had the mostly unbiased BBC News to fuel my growth.

Many folk are surprised when I say I am a conservative, mainly because my views, seen by some here in the USA would be seen as Liberal. When really, to me. Conservatism has always been about the middle ground, about making things work for the better and never to marginalize, to blame others for failings. To me, being a conservative was about being responsible.

Which Means?

These conservative values don’t seem to translate to the USA version of conservatism, indeed hardened GOP supporters are surprised and angered when I tell them, that the UK Conservative party is more like the Democrats, than the Republicans. This leaves me in an odd politically here in the USA. Let me explain.

I am a UK Conservative, which means…

To my Liberal friends I am a raving bigot.

To my Conservative friends I am a raving liberal.

When really I am about common sense.

In the broad sense I am stuck in the middle, quite literally in my definition of a conservatism.

Heritage Foundation

About three years ago I was doing contract work, my agency asked if I wanted to step into a six-week contract with the Heritage Foundation. I looked them up, saw that they were a conservative think tank, and thought, well… I am a conservative, why not? Over those six weeks I learned more about the Heritage Foundation, what it was really about and I grew sickened. I really should have looked more into them and it remains a black-stain on my employment record which I am not proud of.

You see, I though the Heritage Foundation was, well, about preserving Heritage and promoting American ideals. What I found was an organization that posted dealt with untruths, promoted values that were hollow and the first time ever I found myself in a work place, were I couldn’t actually be me. I spent those six-weeks in a propaganda office for the Alt-Right. Along the way I was tested to see if I was worthy of full-time employment, I failed those ideological tests, because I cared what happened to people, and I cared deeply about the truth.

I was perhaps to naive.

My point of view was simple, both sides do so much crap wrong, why do we need to make anything up? Was this the naked face of conservatism in the USA? To gain power by any means necessary? The USA is a democracy, not over-boiled Game Of Thrones episode. Those that crave power, and will say, and do anything to get it, are to my mind the very folk you don’t want to give power too.

Am I Conservative?

Yes, but not what the USA says is one. I don’t know what I am politically in the USA, my value system doesn’t mesh-up with either party. I believe in common sense, I believe in personal responsibility, in fiscal responsibility, but also to help our fellow-man. Most strongly I believe we will never be free unless everyone is treated equally, only then we will truly become great.

Here Is What Cap Says

It is no secret that I am a huge Captain America Fan, he encompasses the American Dream, what it can be if we lift each other up, instead of putting each other down. It is an ideal we should strive to live for, here is Cap in his own words.

[image error] [image error] [image error] [image error] [image error]

It comes down to this, we have to stand up for what we believe in, our core values and answer to our conscience as we make our way in this world, and from this point forward this is what I have to do.

Don’t Do Nothing

In less than 24 hours we will see the inauguration of a President-Elect Trump, who by his past history alone has shown how wholly unsuited he is to this role, a man who has bullied his way to this office, has deep unsettling ties to a belligerent foreign power, and craves power. No matter how much I hope I am wrong, I fear the USA, the great experiment that it was will come to an end in Trumps tiny little hands hands.

How did this happen? I know the election numbers, that really less than a half of a half voted him into this office, so this half of a half saw something they liked, something they wanted, something in Trump to place him as President. This half of a half can’t all be raving loony racists and bigots, they were regular folk just like you and me. We have to have conversations again, deal with truths and accept opinions, or we are done. If the vote for Trump was to break the status quo, then we all have to be on watch to make sure we don’t slide back into it.

No longer can men of good conscience stand by and do nothing, this Saturday I will be with my daughter at the Woman’s March on Washington, I have never been in demonstration, and joined an act civil outcry in this manner. I don’t know what to expect, I have my fears that this could all go south, but I have my hopes that this march, along with others that will surely follow will show, that power is in our hands to effect change, to improve our lot. To make sure those that govern don’t get away with anything that enriches them and harms us.

To stand up for something that is right, even with the whole world is shouting that you are wrong, there is nothing nobler I can think of doing.

It is all in our hands now…. And yes, I am scared.

That Was The Year That Was As We Survive The 2016 Trip Around The Sun

Nick Davis, Tristan the Teddy Bear and Mr Button at Alt World Studios HQHello Everybody Peeps, as the final hours of 2016 tick away I thought it would be nice to have a quick look at the year from my unique perspective, and what a year it has been.

The Good

We are all still here, the wife, my kids, the dog, the cats, we all made it through this year were we have seen a lot of my generation influencers die. I’ve pushed my art abilities to the point that I am actually starting to like what is coming out of my pencil now, my writing has turned corner and I’ve got my head around writing comic scripts.

Day job wise, I am constantly pushing the company website as a means to more effectively marketing message, and although there are always pitfalls I’ve managed two years of consistent 15% unique growth – which is something a lot of Webmasters can only ever wish for. As for Alt World Studios, we got two books published, a web comic and I hope laid the ground work for an exciting 2017.

At conventions I am starting to be more recognized for my work and starting to be seeked out, which is nice. I’ve lost over 50lbs in weight and have returned to by Port Of Entry weight of 220lbs, which means I no longer look at a pair of pants and think how did my ass get so big? And somewhere along the way I managed to pay for our first family vacation… yay!

The Bad

Well, it was 2016 right? We only got two books published, Alt World Studios took a huge hit in the Summer, we went to a convention that was a total disaster for us and cost almost the entire cash-flow for my small indie operation. From there we never really recovered and two late year projects had to be cancelled – lessons learned.

The wife’s health has got a lot worse and can only be called chronic now, and with that my free time for Alt World Studios (which was never really that much to begin with) has drastically been reduced, as I am now basically looking after everything in the house, working, and taking care of a disabled wife… Yeah… Not the life plan I thought we would have. Life is one of those things that happens when we are busy living it. Things got a little harder than either of us would have liked.

The Future

In all though, 2016 wasn’t the best of years, not totally horrible, but it was harder than it should have been. I suspect though I am not alone with this and many of you have had similar years. I have some exciting projects coming, the first of which will power the entire first part of 2017 should you all choose to support it and we will be talking about it in the next week or so.

So, I want to say thank you to everyone that hung with us during this trip around the sun, the world is still turning, we are all (mostly) still here and we have a new year that promises to be quite the adventure… Onwards!!!

The 2017 Alt World Studios Publishing Wish List

Welcome To Alt World StudiosHello Everybody Peeps, we are in the final weeks of 2016 and it is time to look ahead at the wish list of books I would like to publish in 2017 and what we actually got done in 2016, so after the jump lets take a look at what is done, what we want to do, and where we are going with Alt World Studios in 2017.

What We Wanted To Do

I started 2016 with a boat load of ambition, optimism and a to do list that seemed, well… To do able, here is the list below.

The Alt World Publishing Wish List For 2016

Cuddly Defenders Comic: Out Of the Attic 3
Cuddly Defenders Comic: Out Of The Attic 4
Cuddly Defenders Graphic Novel: Out Of The Attic
Cuddly Defenders Graphic Novel: Big Time Heroes (starring Forrest & Scout)
Adventures Of Hero Ted Comic Book
The Cuddly Ninjas Short Book
Mr Button The Teddy Bear One-Shot Comic
Imagination Adventure Web Comic: Tristan the Teddy Bear Goes Under The Sea
Teddy Bear Tales Christmas Book: Herby The Snowman (and the strange snow day)
The Wonder Tales Vol Three (The Princess Archer Saga continues)

Sadly the year had other things on its mind, a web design contract fell through that would have powered the publishing list, a really bad show almost sank the cash flow I had available to Alt World Studios, and my wife’s health significantly declined. All contributing factors, that led to a significant trimming of the list, but a better understanding on how to present what Alt World Studios produces. In short I was ambitious, but rubbish. This is what we actually got published.

Hero Ted, the Superhero Teddy Bear Comic BookThe Alt World Published List For 2016

Adventures Of Hero Ted Comic Book
Mr Button The Teddy Bear One-Shot Comic
A Teddy Bear Tale Webtoon
BAD Troopers Webtoon

Ouch, eh? But… Lessons learned all the way here, my personal art got better, I am starting to be recognized at conventions, Collectors Corner a local comic book store has been really kind to me and given my further exposure for my work. This all contributes to a solid base to build from into 2017.

Tristan The Teddy Bear Wilma Bunny And the Tiny Teds Sketch Card Mr Button The Teddy BearDetective Sam Stuffings

What I Want To Do

With a foundation built, here is what I want to do in 2017, and I hope you like what you see.

The Proposed Alt World Publishing Wish List For 2017

Cuddly Defenders Comic: Out Of the Attic 3 (to finish the mini-series)
Cuddly Defenders Graphic Novel: Out Of The Attic
Cuddly Defenders Graphic Novel: Big Time Heroes (starring Forrest & Scout)
The Teddy Bear Adventures (Hero Ted & Cuddly Ninja Comic Book)
A Teddy Bear Tale Manga and Webtoon
Mr Button The Teddy Bear One-Shot Comic Part Two
Teddy Bear Tales Illustrated Collected Works: Unconditional, Faithful and Friends
Teddy Bear Tales Illustrated Story Book: Peril On Ice Mountain
The Tether Saga

Ambitious, much?

I still believe it is important to swing for the fences and the 2017 list reflects this ambition and while the list is no shorter than what I wanted to do, we are much closer to being able to get to target of completing this list than you think. Let’s break it down.

Out Of The Attic – issue three is the final issue that will complete the mini-series of Teddy Bear Tale based anthology stories. I am hoping to make this a 2017 spring release project so I can combine all the books into 100+ page graphic novel for Fall 2017. The tools are there, the artists are ready to go and it is time to finish this story. Learn more about Out Of The Attic here.

Big Time Heroes – will be a collected work of the Forrest & Scout stories from Out Of The Attic and will also have one more bonus story to make this a fun and quirky graphic novel featuring the dynamic heroes who are out to recapture their kids lost toys. Hope to see it out by Fall 2017

Teddy Bear Ninja Comic Book PageThe Teddy Bear Adventures – featuring Hero Ted, the Cuddly Ninjas and Wunder Bunny. I am the sole creator of this project and I hope to have this all ready for Spring 2017. The plan is to make this a 48 page graphic novel, in the same all-ages early reader format that Hero Ted: Origins is. You can learn more about Hero Ted here.

A Teddy Bear Tale WebtoonA Teddy Bear Tale Manga & Webtoon – this manga is taking the traditional illustrated Teddy Bear Tale story and tilting it directly on its head, with a very different take on Tristan and Wilma, as they protect their children from the Boogeyman and his Monsters under the bed. This is actually being published right now on Webtoons, the first manga collection will be available in Spring 2017. You can read the webtoon here.

Mr Button The Teddy Bear Chasing The Tooth Fairy by Veronica SmithMr Button The Teddy Bear One-Shot Comic Part Two – believe it or not there is a plan to continue the story of Mr Button, his rampage through our Childhood legends haven’t finished yet, he still has to take down the Toof Fairy, the Easter Bunny and the Santa Klaus. Will this revenge filled Teddy Bear complete his vengeance and will we ever find out what set him off? It is my hope to get a second book done sometime in 2017, this very much depends on cash flow. So keep your fingers crossed. Learn more about Mr Button here.

Teddy Bear Tales Illustrated Collected Works: Unconditional, Faithful and Friends – this is done, and is one of the changes going into 2017, illustrated story Faithful and Friends are going out of print, and will be combined with Unconditional into one mega-Teddy Bear powered adventure book. One of the feed backs I got from fans, is fewer books, more collections. This collected works is a step in that direction, it is an amazing book with over 100 pages of comic book and illustrated adventure. You can buy the collections on Amazon here.

Teddy Bear Football Tag Match

Peril On Ice Mountain – We started this project in 2016, various factors, like funds, artist illness and generally life got in the way. I dearly would like to finish this illustrated story in 2017, fingers crossed we launch this time!

The Tether Saga – I have teamed up with Katrina Roets to rewrite the Tether Saga – the story about the reluctant Tether Keeper Sarah Taylor and her journey into a reality not to different to our own, just with a danger lurking in the very shadows. The story was lacking in areas that Katrina can pick up on and bring more story, to the story. The first book is almost been rewritten and is slated for an Easter 2017 release, book two wont be far behind that and the trilogy should be all done by the end of 2017.

Of course along the way I have a couple of secret squirrel projects and hopefully well received surprises that I can’t talk about yet. So, thank you for reading my 2017 publishing wish list and keep supporting Alt World Studios by buying out work. Adventures ahead!
