New Star Wars Comic Episode IX Hints At Leia’s Fate

[image error]WARNING: This contains spoilers for The Last Jedi.

It was in December 2016 that Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia, tragically lost her life. The character was slated to be the star of the Episode IX, after Harrison Ford and Luke Skywalker had taken lead roles in the previous two films. The story of the final film in the trilogy had to be dramatically changed in the wake of her death.

Fans however were not ready to let the beloved character go and even petitioned the role to be recast with Meryl Streep, or use CGI to cast Fisher (as had been done in Rogue One). Both options have been ruled out in respect to the actress.

Star Wars however lives on far beyond the films, and Digital Spy claims that a new Star Wars comic gave hints of the character’s fate. The comic takes place directly after the events of The Last Jedi, and in one scene Leia confides to Poe Dameron that the deaths of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, along with her accident in space, weighs heavily on her. The last issue shows just how tired Leia is from fighting, and suggests that she will pass on the leadership soon to someone worthy.

While the death of Carrie Fisher has had a huge mark on the franchise, Star Wars continues to expand. This month a spinoff called Solo: A Star Wars Story was released. It featured the life and exploits of a young Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian.

Star Wars’ spinoffs are an indicator of how Disney is planning to create a cinematic universe like Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Each major Star Wars character has an enormous following, even those that haven’t seen significant screen time in the past like Boba Fett. Star Wars merchandise has always been a huge part of the franchise and fans are as devoted to collecting their favorite characters as they are watching the films. Lottoland reveals that a 70s-era Darth Vader action figure that is still in its original packaging will set someone back $2,370. The massive price tag for Darth Vader’s rare and collectible toy shows how important the franchise continues to be to the fans.

If successful at the box office, Han Solo’s spin off may just lead to other characters getting their own spinoffs. Both Boba Fett and Obi Wan Kernobi have been put forward as likely candidates. Actor Ewan McGregor has said that he would be interested in returning to a galaxy far away. Even in mediums not directly related to the franchise the characters have popped up. This has ranged from TV shows like Family Guy to humorous books showing Darth Vader as a struggling father.

As to whether or not Princess Leia will live on as the commander of the Resistance that is up to the filmmakers. We will have to wait to see what the film canon version of her story is.

Unpacking Avengers Infinity War – Warning Spoilers Ahead!!!

[image error]This blog post unpacks some of my thoughts about Avengers Infinity War, as this part normally appears in the preview before you click the read more button I am going to give you a spoiler free thought before the jump. This Avengers movie is very much like the old-skool Marvel Summer event books – the entire story is in the movie, there are no tie-ins to collect, but it does help if you have a passing knowledge of the stories that came before. Now… With that being said, everything after the jump is spoilers. So, if you haven’t seen the movie don’t make the jump.

Before I go on, the MCU has released eighteen movies and looking back there has been only six I’ve not seen in the movie theater. That is a pretty good cinematic experience to have, and in case you are interested here is the list of the movies I have not seen in theater.

All the Thor movies – it is Thor and the character is well… Thor and I’ve never been that interested in him outside the Avengers
Antman – pretty much the same reason as Thor
Captain America: The Winter Solider – we were going through a tough financial period and just couldn’t swing it.
Black Panther – I’ve never enjoyed Black Panther as a character, so I wasn’t too hyped to see the movie and then life stuff got in the way of seeing it in the theater. I now feel I missed something special on the big screen, but I am looking forward to the digital release.

Survival Guide Tips

[image error]The Infinity War (IW) movie is long, the longest of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Long blockbuster movies aren’t too common, although Lord of the Rings, and the stretched Hobbit movies were an exception. The problem with IW is there is only five minutes after the opening titles that nothing really happens, after that there are no slow-parts to really take a pee break in. So tip number one! Drink a little fluid, use the bathroom before heading in and watch your fluid intake during the movie – no super-gulps or you will miss something important.

The good news the end credits are really long before you get to the end scene, so if you really need to go, this is the time to do it, but be fast!

It helps if you have a passing knowledge of the movies that came before, IW does a good job of being a standalone (for a bookend movie), but you will get a better idea of some of the character relationships, and a couple of the in-jokes if you’ve seen the past movies.

Bad things happen in this movie to characters you really like, if you are of a sensitive nature bring tissues.

My Review

The MCU once again shows all its strengths and really pulls in all its past story telling. The Avenger movies are now Phase Bookends and heralds of the next set of stories and Infinity War is pretty much doing the same job – just bigger. This movie shouts blockbuster popcorn movie and plays up to that type, the action starts right from the beginning and beyond a five-minute slowdown after the opening titles it does not stop. Throwing set pieces and sensational action at you at a breakneck pace.

The Russo brothers do an amazing job of putting together a multi-ensemble piece with a huge expansive story and making it all, well… Make sense. The movie so easily could have got lost in itself, or become an Exposition dump, or nothing but apocalyptic cgi porn, yet it avoids all those traps while giving all the cast a time to shine.

The Villian Thanos, so often an issue with Marvel movies was more than one note, Thanos had a pathos to him, a realy motivation that you cannot help but understand. There was a real reason why he was doing what he was doing. And while still diabolical, it made sense, over the dried out evil for evil sake.

The movie grabs you and does not let you go, and you are crushed at the end, as much as the heroes who fought so hard, but failed, are. From the beginning you get the idea that everything is in peril and that feeling does not go away throughout the movie.

There is perhaps one dodgy CGI effect (Thor destroying an Outrider ship, you’ll notice it) that really sticks out of the movie, the rest of it is pretty seemless. Even Thanos has a nice solid feel to him.

My only niggle is this; although a good job is made by this movie to be accessible, you really do need to know what has happened previously to really immerse into the movie. It has taken the MCU ten years to get to this point and IW delivers on ten years of storytelling.

I really cannot say enough good thing about this movie, I don’t see myself as a Marvel Fanboy and have wished time and time again that DC would step up and take the MCU on, but again, Marvel has shown what you can really do with a superhero movie.

And it is spectacular.

Unpack Time – This is Where The Spoilers Begin

[image error]There is a lot going on in this movie, some of which I feel was filmed, but then cut, and explained in exposition along the way – so I expect lots of extras in the digital release! I have some stuff to be unpacked here and does contain the real spoilers, let me know what you think.

Where was Valkyrie? The movie opens with the Asgard Home ship being devastated, we see Thor beat, Heimdall die and watch Loki be strangled (although is Loki really dead remember Dark World?). We witness Hulk get physically beaten in moments, but where was Valkyrie? and I didn’t see the Warbound? My theory she and the Warbound were charged with saving those Asgardians they could, as Thor and company fought a rearguard action to delay Thanos.
Is Rocket Raccoon really afraid of Thanos? We saw it in the first Guardians movie, Rocket was ready to cut and run to get away from Thanos, rather than try to stop him. Did he volunteer for the mission with Thor to try to save himself and Groot? And what does that mean for his friendships with the rest of the Guardians?
Nano suit… Really?
Vision yet again suffers from what I call plot device powers. For a being who can phase and actually has a power level not to far away from Thor, he certain gets beaten easily a lot. This happens in the comics as well, Vision is the one character who always gets beat in the silliest ways. The point being Vision really gets beat up in this movie, when if you follow his power-set he really can dish it out.
Thor, just how tough are Asgardians? Survives a beating by Thanos, a ship explosion, prolonged exposure in space, the heat of a star and still keeps on swinging. If all the Asgardians are this tough, how come as a race they keep getting beat so easily?
What deal did Clint (Hawkeye) and Scott (Antman) take that not only took them out of the renegade status, but also seemed to have taken them completely out of the action? When infact it was all Heroes on deck.
Why Starlord.. Why…
What did Dr Strange see to make him change his mind about putting the protection of the time gem above Tony and Spider-man? His final words,’It was the only way’ are very symbolic and the good Doctor knew, or saw something in all the futures he scanned, that meant keeping Tony alive was the key to victory.
Why didn’t Hulk come out to play? Has the big guy being beat so easily got him scared? Does this mean we are going to see the Gray Hulk in the next movie?
You could technically grow a new Groot from Stormbreakers hilt, and why are Asgardians taught Groot? The World Tree?
With Thanos’ victory and we see the disintegration of all the Heroes, did y’all note the only ones that didn’t disappear were the original Avengers?
Anyone catch the Doctor Who reference when Spider-man turned to dust, if you didn’t when you watch the movie again it adds an extra emotional punch to the scene. Especially since Parker constantly references pop-culture items to annoy Tony.
Why did Nick Fury call Captain Marvel this time? With all the threats the Earth, why was he keeping her as an ace card? Nice touch using a 90’s pager to do so.
Is Thanos now in a reality of his own making? Or one the gauntlet has trapped him in? Sitting down and watching the sunrise was Thanos’ final wish after all. The Infinity Gems have never given anything without a cost to the wielder, and if I remember my lore correctly, they never quite give you what you desire. While Thanos has literally wiped out half the universe, what are the side-effects? New heroes being born? The birth of Adam Warlock? The mobilization of the Shi’ar Galactic Empire? The origins of Nova Prime? Or perhaps the beginnings of the Annihilation Wave, or the awakenings of Galactus? Nothing in the Marvel universe happens without repercussions.
I should point out Tony isn’t trapped on Titan, as the Milano is still intact and I am pretty certain Nebula knows how to fly it. Or Thor can now bifrost where ever the plot needs to take him. The battleground has definitely shifted from Earth now.
Unless I’ve missed something Thanos’ ship is still floating out there in Earth’s orbit
We all know a second movie is coming and the power of the Infinity Gems have shown the universe can be reset. But will the Heroes that died before the disintegration return? Or are they lost forever because the gems can only reset what they have unmade?
Norn stones anyone?

Summing up

With a Black Panther sequel in the works, along with Spider-man and Guardians 3, I know some of those deaths were shock value. It will be interesting to see how the heroes now fight back after being so utterly defeated. Will the return of Captain Marvel rally them? Is it coincidence that the original Avengers team is left standing?

This is just a few of the things I had questions and thoughts about during Infinity War, I am sure on my second viewing I am going to have a lot more. Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below.

It is going to be a long wait until May 2019.

My Son Has Joined The Coastguard!

[image error]It has been a long time coming, after all the trials and tribulations, the tests and anxious waiting my son shipped to the Coastguard Training Center at Cape May on Tuesday to begin his basic training.

This also means we are now a new CoastGuard family and even stranger to consider a brand new service family, and I know we are not the most typical service family you would see. I am now figuring out this whole new world, the connections and slowly becoming aware we are part of something much larger than I think we ever realized. I am looking forward to seeing my son and his fellow shipmates grow into the Coastguards I know they can be. I am proud of them all.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Options Dee & Duo As A Movie Vehicle For His Daughter

In a surprise move, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson via his production company Seven Bucks have optioned the new Teddyverse characters Dee & Duo with an eye to create a movie vehicle for his Daughter Simone Johnson.

Details are sparse, but the general idea it would be a mix of live action and animation, much like the Paddington movies. With Dwayne voicing the kick-the-monsters butt Teddy Bear Duo, and his daughter Simone playing Dee, the whip-smart wise cracking teenager, who has stumbled upon the secret war between the Teddy Bears and the Boogeyman’s Legions Of Monsters Under The Bed. It promises to be possible new franchise for the established action star and a great Hollywood vehicle to attach his daughter too.

Of course, here at Alt World Studios we will keep you abreast of all developments in this unexpected twist that promises to bring a whole new direction to the teddyverse! Adventures ahead!

I ask everyone before reading this article to consider what day it is, not only is is Easter Sunday, but it is April Fools Day. Sure, Dee & Duo would actually be a good fit for Dwayne Johnson’s ambition to find a vehicle for his daughter, but let’s face it… I have no idea how to get it in front of him.

Also, because my Ex-Wife stalks my page and is no doubt running to call her Lawyer about this latest development and possible increase in my income. I have this to say.

APRIL FOOLS EVERYBODY PEEPS!!!

(Of course is anyone knows how to get the Rock to see this please… PLEASE… Let me know)

Would Gun Safety Prevent Mass-Shootings And My Moment Of Horror?

[image error]This is a picture of Jaelynn Willey, she is sixteen years old, the same age as my Daughter, and was a student at Great Mills High School in St Mary’s County, I saw was because she passed away on Thursday night (03/22/2018). The reason for this tragic death was she was shot in the head on Tuesday (03/20/2018) by a fellow student (who will remain nameless cause I don’t glorify assholes), and the reason from what I can gather is they broke up. Senseless, a life taken, lives destroyed and lost, over, really nothing.

[image error]This is Desmond Banes, aged fourteen, he was also shot by the same shooter who killed Jaelynn Willey, in his first year of High School he was a bystander and victim in a High School Shooter event. While he has survived (thank Gods), the harm the shooter did to his life will be ongoing.

I can only thank the quick reaction of School Resource Officer Deputy Blaine Gaskill, and his bravery stopping the shooter, and preventing this tragic event from getting worse. You, Sir have my eternal thanks for saving my Daughters life, and 1600 other souls that day.

Two young lives disrupted by tragedy, a school full of students, teachers and parents traumatized and a Deputy who I have no doubt is replaying the moment of shooting a kid he most likely knew, to save everyone.

My Daughter goes to Great Mills High School, from talking to her about the events on Tuesday I found out she passed by the shooter, and his victims mere moments before the shooter took out his Dad’s gun and decided to kill. Yes, that did wonders for my blood pressure and I am still trying to not think of the what if’s of that scenario. If you read my last entry, How To Talk To Your Kids In An Active-Shooter Situation, you will know I was pretty much with my Daughter via phone attempting to keep her calm and talk her through what she could do to keep herself safe as the horrific events of Tuesday unfolded. It was a moment of horror I hope no parent has to go through ever.

But that is the problem, I thought it would never happen at my kid’s school, but it did! Meaning it so easily could be your kids in this situation. We can no long afford to bury our heads in the sand when we have our children asking us to keep them safe. There has to be a way of preventing, or at the very least stop these shooting from being an almost weekly occurrence. But, what can be done?

Gun Safety?

Here lies the issue, there is no way of talking about Gun Safety without some crazy NRA-fed troll jumping and claiming someone is going to take all our guns. I could say, I am not against the second amendment until I am blue in the face and a good third of the population of the USA would not believe me. In fact I always say I think you should be allowed to own as many guns as you like, whatever makes you feel safe, but I always say keep them safe, learn how to use those dangerous tools and be responsible with your ownership. After all, isn’t that what all gun owners say? I am a responsible gun owner? Practice what you say you are. I am instead going to talk to the remaining two-thirds who have a head on their shoulders to consider my words.

One of the issues here is the teaching of gun safety, there isn’t any lessons about using your tool, you can buy one and take it out the store (I know not that easy), without any real idea how to keep it, how to use it, how to maintain it and how to keep it safe. In any other part of your life a tool that can cause lethal damage, you are trained, certified, and kept up to date on the latest safety procedures. And it is locked or stored in a secure place… But, not a gun.

The NRA before 1972 was all about gun training, gun safety and oddly gun control, but this was before they became a stooge for the gun manufacturers and threw out their morals for money. I am though not going to dwell on that.

If Gun Safety was really a thing here in the USA, even if was as the most basic level, of here is your gun, now by law I have to show you its operation, how to maintain and give you advice on how to store it,. I feel this most basic of things would curb the epidemic of gun shootings, by being demonstrated that this is a lethal tool, and not a toy, you can instill in some minds the enormity of owning such a thing. Some may shout undue burden, but really… Is it?

I am also in favor of universal background checks, it is pretty much a no-brainer for gun safety, and for keeping these lethal tools out the hands of those that have medical mental issues.

A couple of years ago I talked about background checks and expanding gun safety and certification training in a blog which you can read here. These are very small things that can be done so easily, that would have a significant impact on the mass-shooter epidemic.

Last Words

I realize you cannot legislate against crazy, or those that would seek to do harm, but maybe you can cut down on those opportune shootings, the emotional charged moments where a kid or adult can easily get hold of a gun. And maybe, just maybe you wont get a call from your child saying they are involved in a school shooting, or even worse a visit from Police Officer telling you your child has been shoot.

Our children are our future, our prosperity will be in their hands.

Thank you for listening.

How To Talk To Your Kids In An Active Shooter Situation

[image error]There has been an epidemic of school shootings, but you think, it will never happen to me, right? My kids are safe, my kids school isn’t in a bad area, you will be in denial, fooling yourself it will never happen, then it does to you kids. I know this… Because it happened to Daughter.

Today, or Tuesday, March 20, 2018, the first day of Spring, my Daughters school, Great Mills High School in St Mary’s County had an active shooter situation. Yes, you read that right.

This is our new frightening reality, a reality our children must face, just by going to school and educating themselves, they are now a target, and it isn’t a thing that should be a thing for our children to consider.

At 8.05am I got a phone call from my Daughter, a little unusual as kids are more likely to text than call. I was at work, but was free at that moment to take the call, which is unusually for me. She was crying, so I immediately scurried into our conference room and I heard these heart stopping words.

”Daddy, there is a shooter in our school”

I am 100 miles away and listening to my little girl beg me to help her, helpless is one of the many things I felt at that moment. So what did I do? I don’t have superpowers, no way of instantly being there and stopping this shooter, to shield her from danger, I was unable to protect my baby… So, I went into survivor mode for her and asked her situation questions, so I could think for her.

Are you in a classroom? Yes (Okay that means she best off hiding not running)

Is their a Teacher there? Yes (Good, hopefully like me, the Teacher had to experience active shooter training and will at least do the basics, and an authority figure will reduce the panic in the room)

Is the door locked? Yes (Locked doors are more likely to be ignored by an active shooter)

Go to the far side of the classroom, away from the corridor side and sit down on the floor, can you do that for me? Yes, I can. (Keep her away from the corridor side of the room to reduce her chances from ricochets)

Now, listen to me, you are going to be alright, but I need you to do this for me. I need you to lay down and keep as many desk and chairs between you and the corridor side of your room that you can. Can you do that for me? Okay. (This was the worst part of this phone call, I am telling her to basically hide and praying there is enough furniture to protect her from view and to stop any bullets that may come through the wall.)

She was as safe as I could make her, so I asked more questions about her situation, thinking if I had too I could somehow relay this to the Police.

Can you hear any loud bangs? No (Shooter could be roaming or has been stopped)

That is a good sign, (keeping it optimistic even though I am screaming in terror inside) can you hear anyone running around outside? No (Shooter may have left for easy targets or again has been stopped.)

This is also a good sign (means the shooter is either gone, or has been stopped) Did you try to contact your Mother (who she lives with)? Yes, but she isn’t picking up. (I will contact her then)

I then put the phone on speaker and text her mother, giving her a minute before finding another phone to call her. Her mother answers and states she is on her way to the school. Leaving me to keep talking to my Daughter.

What do you see now? I just saw Police move past our windows.

Good, (I am now very relieved) that means you are safe, stay down and do what they say then they come to your classroom. I am going to remain on the phone with you until you don’t need me too.

What is happening now? The Teacher took a call and says we are locked down, and to wait for an Officer to come us. (Safe finally)

Over the next couple of hours my questions were a mix of what is happening now and asking where she is. I did all this to keep her busy and thinking. I live two hours away from her and the best protection I could give until I got there was to keep her active and think for her.

Please remember my Daughter was already trapped in the school, and had to shelter in place. If they can always tell your child to escape and to get as far away from the event as they can, and then keep going. Think for them.

I hope I did the right things today.

It Is Not Right

Today my Daughter faced a situation that no one should be a participate in, an active shooter real life scenario. At this point, I had to keep my head clear for her, hope for a little bit of luck and for a fast Police response. Remember by Daughter was stuck in a classroom with only one exit and this was a very dangerous situation, that so easily could have been even more lethal than it was.

These mass shootings should not be a thing, but they are and our children are now targets for any asshole with a gun, who has had a bad day. There are no easy answers to gun safety and it is obvious this is a conversation this nation is not ready to have with itself.

And I don’t know what to say about that.

But… I know this, it will be my Daughters generation that will change the course of this conversation. They are brave, bold and tired of paying for our mistakes. So, we can help our kids take those first steps, just like we did when they were toddlers, call your local State Senator or Representative and ask them, just what are they really doing about gun safety.

We owe our children that much at least.

Drawing Outside Your Comfortzone: A Digital Art Procreate Video

[image error]If you have been following my Drawing Outside Your Comfortzone posts, you will know I have transitioned from paper to full digital art, using an Apple Pencil and the versatile Procreate App, I am certainly on an adventure.

Digital Playback

I have learned that Procreate can record your drawing progress, and I thought it would be fun to show one of these processes using my latest Teddyverse characters Dee & Duo.

Two things I noticed about the playback, it is a little bouncy, and jumps frames when you export. I lost most of the initial pencil and part of the inking (black line) process. So, above is what I have managed to stitch together. I hope it gives an insight into my unique drawing process and I hope to bring you more of these, like an entire Hero Ted page in the future.

Scaling The Dream: A Plan For Future Storytelling

[image error]Over the last five years I have seen my website AltWorld Studios grow and change, along the way I set lofty targets of getting multiple books published, and pretty much failed to met each and every one of them. Thankfully I’ve been very lucky that I have been supported in my indie publishing goal by my family. And a lot of the technical skills needed in publishing, such as web design, graphic design, illustration and the ability to write, are skills I have on various levels of competence. It is time though, to scale back and focus my efforts.

From the beginning AltWorld Studios was a place to tell my stories and be my home base on the internet. Over the years my story telling branched out from traditional novel-writing, to illustrated stories and then to comic books. To make these illustrated stories happen I scraped together what pennies I could spare, ran Kickstarters, and tabled at conventions with one goal in mind, to fund the the next book. While I am yet (or most likely never will) see any financial reward for my efforts, I can proudly say that all the artists I’ve worked with have been well-compensated for their work and every penny I ever raised went into my books. In many ways that has been my greatest success; in all my published work, I kept to my promise that the creative talent is always compensated.

Scaling The Dream

The last three years I posted a wish list of work I wanted to publish that year, each one ambitious, but scaled I hoped at the time to something I could make happen. Sadly with every wish list I released, I failed to get a third of the books done. It might be good to post ambitious lists, but I always over extended and made statements that I could not back up on the shoe-string budget that was practically available. It is time now to be a little more realistic, lean on my skills and scale the dream accordingly.

End Of The Beginning

Do not worry, it isn’t the end of work I started here, it is merely a pivot. Stories will still be told, just at a very different pace, and now I feel confident enough with my art skills, it is time to spread my wings and illustrate my own work. I still have plans to continue the Awakenings Saga, and complete a Mr Button mini-series; it will just be at a lot slowly pace, as and when funds are available to pay the artists that work on the stories.

[image error]I am also scaling back my convention tabling, (I know how can I scale it back more?), I don’t really have anything new and I’ve settled to sit this year out, and only return when I have something new to show. You see, when I first started attending conventions in Artist Alley it was to sell my stories, not mashup artwork based off other people’s work, to raise those precious funds to get the next book started. While the convention attendance has pretty much turned into an old friends reunion, I cannot justify the expense – even though my family (the wife) said she would move heaven and earth to get me there, with her chronic illness it is fundamentally unfair.

Support after all goes both ways.

Not The Beginning Of The End

This is not the end of things, and I am aware I’ve already said that – the Out Of The Attic Saga with Tristan & The Cuddly Defenders has been completed and I am tying up the last of story loose ends from that body of work.

The Teddy Bear Action Comics will continue under my own hand. I am in the middle of drawing the next Hero Ted Story to add to this fun Webtoon series, Unconditional Hugs has been re-introduced, and will be drawn at a six-strip quarterly release – along the way I hope to add to Awakenings and Mr. Button, (but, they are not a high priority).

[image error]This newly dubbed Teddyverse will continue to grow, with new characters and adventures, albeit much slower than I would like, but in a more sustainable way – after all I am not a publishing house, I am just trying to fake it until I make it and doing my own thing.

Also this is going to happen.

Dee & Duo are new characters for the Teddyverse, and will be the adventure story I am writing (and drawing) throughout 2018, I am very excited to tell their story and I hope when I release it you will be excited to read it too.

Onwards

As you’ve been reading changes are coming to AltWorld Studios, my mostly one very broken donkey show is going to keep telling stories that I hope you want to read, and to bring you the wonders that I have seen. Let me know your thoughts below, and I hope support my work.

Adventure ahead!
