I've noticed a lot of people on the social media complaining about 2011 and otherwise wishing it good riddance. The thing is, this time last year people were saying the same thing about 2010, and the year before that 2009, etc. This could mean that we've had a lot of sucky years in a row or that people are just more likely to complain than talk about what a great year it was.
The best thing that happened to me this year was that it seems like I've finally managed to chop through the big writer's block of 2010 and get started on a new book. It's progressing slowly so far but I can't get too worried about that—producing slowly is still producing.
This year it feels like many of our friends lost family members and there seemed to be a lot of depressing news (I may remember 2011 as the year I had to give up watching any news on TV—even The Colbert Report!—because it would just get me too mad and upset) but I guess that should make me appreciate the good things: my family is relatively healthy and secure, I'm working again, Kristen's made big strides in her sommelier career, neither of the pets had a major health crisis, we finally finished watching The Wire.
Resolutions (which I rarely make and even more rarely keep): try and lose weight, keep working on my book and try to have my wife meet OkGo.
So I hope you had a tolerable 2011 and hope the coming year brings you some good news. Stay cool.
