Holiday Safety for Cats
The holidays are meant to be a joyful time, but for many of us, they’ve turned into a stressful race to an imaginary finish line. Between parties, baking, shopping, and entertaining, there always seems to be one more thing that needs to get done. And all of this holiday stress affects our cats, too.
Cats are creatures of habit and don’t like to have their routines disrupted. They also pick up on our stress, and your stress can actually make your cat sick. I highly recommend managing your own s...

Allegra’s World: Nursing Mom
It has been said that cats have healing powers, and I’m proof that it’s true! I took care of Mom last week when she was sick. Mom said I was a very good nurse, and that what I did was very sweet. I didn’t think what I did was so special. I was worried about Mom, and I wanted to help her. It’s what we cats do.
I knew something was wrong when Mom didn’t get up at her usual time. She’s always on time with our breakfast, so I was getting worried when she was still laying in bed half an hour after...

Alley Cat Allies National Conference
I spent November 8 through 10 with more than 350 cat lovers at the first Alley Cat Allies National Conference in Crystal City, VA. I’ve attended many pet conferences over the years, including veterinary conferences, BlogPaws, Barkworld, and the Cat Writers Association conference, and they’re all great conferences, attended by people who love cats and whose work in some shape or form involves helping cats, whether it’s through writing, blogging or photography. But at no other conferences have...

Review: PawNosh Glass Pet Bowls
Buying a food or water bowl for your cat isn’t just a matter of finding the cutest pattern or color. What’s much more important than looks is the material the bowl is made out of, and the size.
Plastic bowls may contain BPA’s, and they can also harbor bacteria once they start getting scratched. Feline acne, which manifests in small, oily black bumps on the cat’s chin, very similar to blackheads in humans, is believed to be a reaction to plastic food bowls.
The best materials for cat bowls are g...

Tail Vaccinations May Facilitate Cancer Treatment in Cats
You may have seen the media coverage about a recent study that suggests that the tip of a cat’s tail appears to be as effective as vaccines at traditional sites. And I’m pretty sure that you probably had the same reaction I had: “no way would my cat put up with that!” Surprisingly, a recent study showed that cats tolerate tail injections well. But why vaccinate in the tail?
The study was motivated by the high incidence of vaccine-induced sarcomas in cats. The incidence of these tumors ranges f...
