2013 has been a very good year for all of us here at The Conscious Cat. Our readership and fanbase grew rapidly, thanks to all of you who read this blog every day, comment here and on our Facebook page, and share what you read with your friends and followers. Allegra, Ruby and I appreciate your support more than words can say.

With more than 365 posts, it’s hard to highlight only a handful of posts, but I gave it my best shot. I hope you enjoy this look back at a wonderful year.

Conscious Cat Sunday: Why Cats Don’t Make New Year’s Resolutions

2014 Calendar January

When I asked Allegra and Ruby about their New Year’s Resolutions, they gave me a funny look. Allegra said New Year’s Resolutions are a silly human invention. She said cats live in the moment and don’t worry about what they should be doing next, so they don’t need resolutions. Ruby said she resolves to get more treats this year.

I stopped making New Year’s resolutions several years ago. Since I still like the idea of the “fresh start”a new year offers, Iset New Year’s intentions instead. I thin...

Happiness Is The Cat’s Meow

IMG_6472_edited

How many of you bought Christmas presents for your cats, only to have them turn up their little noses at them, or play with them once or twice, and then ignore them? I’ve done this more than I care to admit. I don’t even know why I even buy Allegra and Ruby toys. Our cat playroom (known in most homes as the family room) is already filled with more cat products than your average pet store! But there’s just something about Christmas that makes me want to get them something special, wrap it for...

Review: Does This Collar Make My Butt Look Big: A Diet Book for Cats by Dena Harris

Harr_Does this Collar Make My Butt Look Big

Dena Harris is not going to endear herself to fat cats everywhere with her latest humor book, Does This Collar Make My Butt Look Big: A Diet Book for Cats, but she will sure make the humans picking up this tongue-in-cheek parody of diet books laugh.

This little book provides weight-loss tips and tricks for “extra fluffy felines” modeled along popular fitness regimes such as The Mayo Clinic Diet (“Vary your water sources. The water dish is so over. Water from the kitchen faucet or toilet should...

The Amazing Story of Lil BUB

Lil_Bub_2013

I previously reviewed Lil BUB’s Lil Book: The Most Extraordinary Life of the Most Amazing Cat on the Planet, and at the time, I balked a little at the title, because let’s face it, don’t we all think that our own cats are the most amazing cats on the planet? I certainly think Allegra and Ruby are! But the charming little book made me fall in love with Lil BUB.

When I was asked to write an article about BUB for Answers.com, I did a little more research about this remarkable little cat. BUB was...

Christmas Eve Reflections

Christmas_Eve_Cats

Christmas Eve has always been a day of reflection for me.

I consider myself a deeply spiritual person, but I don’t feel affiliated with any particular brand of religion. My parents were Catholic, and I grew up in that faith, but during my adult life, I’ve chosen to take what I call a “cafeteria approach” to spirituality, picking and choosing what resonates, and discarding the rest. I celebrate Christmas, because for me, the holiday is ultimately about love, generosity, and giving. But even mor...

Kitten Teeth: Everything You Need to Know

kittten_teeth

Just like humans, cats have two sets of teeth: deciduous teeth, also known as milk teeth, and permanent teeth. Kittens are born without teeth, but within the first two to three weeks the deciduous teeth, also known as milk teeth, baby teeth, or primary teeth, erupt. All of the deciduous teeth are present by the time your kitten is 6 or 7 weeks old. These baby teeth will start to fall out around 3 months of age as the permanent teeth begin to erupt. Once a kitten reaches the age of 6 or 7 mont...

Ruby’s Letter to Santa

Ruby letter to Santa

Allegra and Ruby both wrote their letters to Santa last week. Allegra has asked that hers be kept between her and Santa, but Ruby gave me permission to share hers.

Dear Santa,

it’s Ruby! I’ve been a very good girl this year. I haven’t broken anything in a long time. I only rarely aggravate my sister. I make sure to keep an eye on the birds on our deck. I keep Mom company when she works. I always clean my plate. And I’m just so darn cute (Mom says so all the time!).

Mom says that kittens who are...
