Review: My Best Little Buddy by Tom Templeman

My_Best_Little_Buddy

When we loose a special cat, it’s the stories of that cat’s life that sustain us as we navigate through the devastating grief that comes with losing a best friend. For some, sharing those stories with a wider audience becomes an integral part of the healing process. This was the case for Tom Templeman, a Nashville based songwriter/artist.

Templeman was no stranger to loss. At age 4, he watched his 7-year-old brother being killed by a car. As an adult, he grieved the sudden, early death of his...

Will Ruby Be a Cat Agility Champion?

cat_agility

If you’ve ever been to a cat show, you’ve probably seen those cat agility circuits: a miniature obstacle course of hurdles and tunnels. Cats are enticed through the parcours by a human waving a sparkly wand or feather, and the cat’s time through the circuit is timed. Some cats complete the circuit in a few seconds, others may lay down in the middle of the course and decide that they’re done.

Ruby and I sort of “happened” upon an agility parcours in our kitty playroom the other day. I was playi...

Estate Planning for Pets: Provide For Your Cat in Case Something Happens to You

pet_trusts_and_wills

Nobody wants to think about becoming ill, incapacitated, or dying, but as responsible cat parents, we owe it to our cats to think ahead and make arrangements for their care in the event of death or any other emergency. Making arrangements before they’re needed means peace of mind not just for you, but for family and friends who may not know what to.

Choose a caregiver and discuss expectations

Find one or two responsible friends or relatives who will agree to take care of your cat if something u...

Review: Bird Catcher PRO EX

Bird_Catcher_PRO_EX

Allegra and Ruby got their first package of the new year the other day: they received two of the brand new Bird Catcher PRO EX teaser wand toys in the mail! They previously reviewed the Bird Catcher Pro, which they still love to play with.

This new and improved version of the popular toy features a fully extendable and retractable rod and two Ultra Guinea Fowl Feather refill replacement feathers. They toy comes in a nice storage bag that holds the rod and the feathers.

I love the cushioned hand...

Should You Vaccinate Your Adult Cat for Distemper?

feline_distemper_vaccine

There is no question that vaccines protect against disease – but they also present considerable risk. Sadly, far too many cats are still being over-vaccinated because too many veterinarians, and cat guardians, still think annual “shots” are necessary. Vaccines are implicated in triggering various immune-mediated and other chronic disorders (vaccinosis). Vaccines are also implicated in the high incidence of vaccine-induced sarcomas in cats. The incidence of these tumors ranges from 1 in 1000 t...

Conscious Cat Sunday: Cats as a Catalyst for Change

cats_as_catalyst

There is no doubt in my mind that cats have the power to change lives. I’ve experienced it in my own life more than once. Feebee, my first cat, was responsible for me leaving my soulless corporate job and embarking on a career in veterinary medicine. Buckley changed my life in more ways than I ever could have imagined. It took an entire book to tell her story! Amber, of course, inspired this website, and Allegra and Ruby are continuing the tradition of feline change catalysts in my life.

The w...

Mews and Nips: Dog Adopts Paralyzed Cat

dog_adopts_paralyzed_cat

As far as heartwarming stories go, this one is hard to beat. The Orlando Sentinel’s report about a 2-year-old dachshund standing guard over a 7-month-old paraplegic cat spread like wildfire across social media networks. The pair was found by Seminole County Animal Services in early October. It was still hot, and someone apparently had dumped the animals by a gated driveway outside Geneva, FL, perhaps hoping the homeowner would take pity on them. Idgie growled and barked protectively whenever...
