Conscious Cat Sunday: Be Kind to Yourself

cats_and_kindness

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible. ~The Dalai Lama

Kindness is defined as “the quality of being friendly, generous and compassionate.” It’s a quality that I look for in almost every person I form any kind of relationship with – it matters that much to me. Kindness to cats, and all animals, is the most important to me, but kindness to other human beings is a close second. One of my pet peeves: people who are unkind to waiters or other service personnel.

Research suggests that posi...

Mews and Nips: World’s Oldest Cat is a Tortoiseshell

oldest_cat_in_the_world

Poppy, a 24-year-old tortoiseshell cat from Bournemouth, England, has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest cat. Born in 1990, she was adopted by Marguerite Corner and her daughter Jacqui at the age of five. When she was ten, she went with Jacqui who had moved in with future husband Andy West. The couple now have two sons – Joe, 11 and Toby, eight – and Poppy shares their home with four other cats, two rabbits and a hamster. Poppy is deaf and blind, but despite her a...

Review: Citizen Canine: Our Evolving Relationship with Cats and Dogs

Citizen_Canine_David_Grimm

I doubt that anyone reading this blog needs convincing that cats are family members. In fact, for most of us, it’s hard to understand that not everyone feels the way we do, but the fact of the matter is that cats (and dogs) were once wild animals. In Citizen Canine: Our Evolving Relationship with Cats and Dogs, Science deputy news editor David Grimm explores the changing status of cats and dogs in our society, from their wild origins to their current status of the most loved and valued animal...

A Visit to Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium

Lady_Dinah's_Cat_Emporium

Guest post by Rachel Woodisse

When I first heard about the new trend of cat cafés, my first reaction was one of slight alarm. Working as a cat sitter for over 12 years and before that working in a cat-only veterinary clinic, I was worried about cat welfare. Surely cats like to be on their own and don’t wish to live in large numbers? How would they cope with so many different people coming and going everyday? What about small children causing the cats possible stress? Most cat guardians know ho...

Review: Be Forever Furless Brush

be_forever_furless_brush

When you share your life with cats, cat hair is a fact of life – and one that most of us embrace proudly. But it also means that most of us are constantly on the lookout for products that help us combat cat hair, whether it’s on clothes, bedding or furniture.

The Forever Furless Brush® is an interesting new addition to the hair removal product market. Featuring short nylon bristles and an ergonomic handle, the Be Forever Furless® is designed to pick up cat hair and household lint. It can be us...

The Feline Health Care Crisis

cat_vet_exam

America’s cats are facing a healthcare crisis. The findings of a feline health study conducted by Bayer Health Care found that 52% of America’s 74 million cats are not receiving regular veterinary care. The actual number is probably much higher, since this study only captured data from cat guardians who do seek some veterinary care, not those who never take their cat to the vet. The study also showed that cat guardians are not willing to spend as much money on healthcare for their feline char...
