Mews and Nips: Cat Cafes Take Over the World

cat_cafe

None of us who love cats have any doubts that cats are on a mission to take over the world. Perhaps the fact that there are more and more cat cafes opening in various countries around the world is part of their strategy? I was delighted to see a report on CNN.com earlier this week that features nine cat cafes from Paris, London, Munich, Berlin, Budapest, Vienna, Madrid, Melbourne, and Dubai. Later this year, Kit Tea in San Francisco and Purrington’s Cat Lounge in Oregon are hoping to open the...

Summer Reading for Cat Lovers

cat_with_books

One of my favorite summer pleasures is spending time outside with a good book. Even though a beach vacation is not in the cards this year, I spend as much time as I can on my deck each summer, and I make sure I always have a good supply of summer reading on hand. And of course, much of my summer reading is made up of cat books. The following books are just a few selections that I highly recommend for your summer reading list.

Panthers_Play_for_Keeps

In Panthers Play for Keeps, the fourth book in Clea Simon’s Pet Noir...

Weruva: High Quality Meat with Moisture

Weruva_cat_food_review

Water is critical to keeping your cat healthy. Cats as a species don’t have a high thirst drive. While cats who eat only dry food will generally drink more water than cats who are fed a grain-free canned or raw diet, they still don’t get enough moisture to support all their bodily functions and essentially live in a constant state of low level dehydration, which can lead to bladder and kidney problems. ( For more on why dry food is not a good choice for cats, please read The Truth About Dry C...

Why Do Cats Groom Each Other?

cats_grooming_each_other

It’s one of the sweetest behaviors guardians of multiple cats can witness: two adult cats grooming each other. Have you ever wondered why some cats do that, and others don’t?

The scientific term for this behavior is allogrooming or social grooming. A 1998 study conducted by researchers at the University of Southampton, UK and the University of Leiden, Netherlands, analyzed grooming interactions among a group of 83 domestic cats. The study shed some interesting light on this behavior.

Allogroomi...

The Original Cat Ball: Ultimate Cat Bed, Hideaway and Kitty Gym

The_Cat_Ball

The Original Cat Ball had been on my wish list for Allegra and Ruby for several years, so when Jennifer Schmidt, the designer of this unique cat bed, contacted us to see whether we would like to review one, I was delighted!

The Cat Ball is a fabulous cave style cat bed with padded walls and openings on two sides. It comes in a huge variety of super fun fabrics, and it’s completely machine washable. And that’s a good thing, because I can guarantee you that this cat bed will get used. And used....

Holistic Treatments for FIV Positive Cats

cat_on_blanket

FIV is is an often misunderstood condition. According to the Feline Health Center at Cornell University, the virus affects approximately 1.5 to 3 percent of healthy cats in the United States, with slightly higher rates in cats that are sick or at high risk for infection. FIV is a lentivirus, which means it moves very slowly, and it gradually affects a cat’s immune system. It is passed from cat to cat through blood transfusions and serious, penetrating bite wounds. FIV cannot be transmitted to...

It’s only when you grow up and step back from him―or leave him for your own home―it’s only

then that you can measure his greatness and fully appreciate it.

Mews and Nips: Science Confirms That Cats Do Love Us

cats_can_love

I doubt that anyone reading this blog needs convincing that cats are capable of loving humans, but I did find the results of a study conducted by Paul J. Zak, a neuroeconomist, recognized expert in the study of oxytocin (the “love hormone”) and self-proclaimed cat lover, interesting: the hormone that is released when people are in love is released in animals in the same intimate circumstances. In a recent article for The Atlantic, Zak writes “if animals caused oxytocin release in humans, it w...

Jackson Galaxy On His Work With Lux, “The “911 Cat”

Jackson_Galaxy_Lux_911_cat

This Saturday on My Cat From Hell, Jackson Galaxy will take on what he calls the most challenging case in the 15 years he has worked with cats: Lux, the Portland cat whose guardians barricaded themselves, their baby and their dog in the bedroom of their apartment and called 911 to request assistance when Lux became severely aggressive.

When the story broke last March, it unleashed a firestorm of reaction among cat lovers, with many, as is so common with these types of stories, jumping to judgm...
