National Feral Cat Day 2014
This coming Thursday, October 16, is National Feral Cat Day. This day was launched by Alley Cat Allies in 2001 to raise awareness about feral cats, promote Trap-Neuter-Return, and recognize the millions of compassionate Americans who care for them.
The theme for this year’s National Feral Cat Day is “TNR: From the Alley…to Main Street.” Trap-Neuter-Return—a humane approach to managing and caring for feral cats, and it’s the only effective method of stabilizing feral cat colonies. In the last d...

Mews and Nips: Cat Tracks Elderly Guardian to Nursing Home
I think I probably speak for many of us when I say that the thought of being separated from my cats at some point in my life is just about the worst scenario I can imagine. When Nancy Cohen of Westcott, England, was forced to move into a nursing home, her family left her cat Cleo in the care of neighbors. About two weeks after Cohen moved into the nursing home, staff began to notice a friendly grey and white cat hanging around the property. The staff started feeding her. A few weeks later, Co...

Pawsitive Connection: Purrfect Endings
Guest post by Stacey Ritz
We save each other. I am grateful to experience the power of positive connection time and again throughout my life. I started rescuing stray and injured animals in need as soon as I could walk, so I suppose it has always been in my DNA to co-found an animal welfare organization to assist animals in need on a larger platform. As for my words- my parents recorded my first word as “talks a lot!” in my neatly kept baby book. They claim that once I started talking, I didn’...

So many of you told me last year that you loved the calendar, and we think we made this year’s even better. Allegra and Ruby spent hours picking out just the right photos, and they made sure that they received equal representation.
Tomy knowledge, this is still the only calendar on the market that exclusively features tortoiseshell cats.
Here is a preview of some of the pages:
Calendars are $18.00 plus...

A Cat is a Writer’s Toughest Critic
Guest post by Musetta Simon
“Do you mind? I was working on something just now.”
“Oh, all right.” Don’t let it be said that Musetta the cat was ever less than gracious, especially as you’ve been so kind to drop by. Let me just stretch a bit. These long naps – excuse me, meditations – can leave my spine a bit stiff these days. Besides, this gives you the opportunity to admire my thick black fur. And see these paws? Yes, they are very white and clean. How very observant of you.
What? No, my name is...

Best Cat Scratching Posts
Scratching is a natural behavior for cats. Cats scratch to groom their claws, the scratching motion helps remove dead sheaths from their front claws (they usually chew them off their back claws). They scratch to mark their territory. Their front paws contain scent glands, and scratching leaves behind their unique signature on the object being scratched. They scratch for exercise; scratching stretches the muscles in the front legs and all along the back. And they scratch simply because it feel...

Mercury in Fish-Based Cat Food: What You Should Know
A lot of cats love fish, but feeding it as more than a very occasional treat could is not a good idea and could be harmful to your cat’s health. The primary fish used in cat food are salmon, tilefish (usually identifed as ocean whitefish on the label) and tuna. Each of them presents health issues, because fish can contain toxic doses of common water pollutants, heavy metals, and other contaminants. Mercury is considered one of the top ten chemicals of major public health concern by the World...
