Cats Against Cancer: Precious Cat Litter Wants to Leave Cancer in the Dust

Precious_Cat_cats_against_cancer

When it comes to cat litter, I have yet to find a litter I like better than Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat. This litter has been our go to litter for many years. It clumps better than any other clay litter, it has virtually no dust, and, most importantly, my cats like it. And yes, I’m well aware of the controversy around clay litter, but I’ve found that many cats don’t like the alternative litters – certainly, none of mine ever have. And no matter how much the human “in charge” may like the idea of...

Review: Sugarboy’s Paca Pet Pouf

cat_bed

I met Shelly Habel, the creator of Sugarboy’s, at the National Capital Cat Show in September. Her booth displayed some of the most beautiful handmade cat products I’d seen in quite some time, including the fabulous Paca Pet Pouf. Shelly makes toys and beds for cats and dogs. I was thrilled when she offered to send an Original Paca Pet Pouf for review.

The Paca Pet Pouf by Sugarboy’s is a unique handmade pet bed, inspired by Shelly’s three cats, Poni, Beemer and Mowgli, who discovered the plush...

Dr. Catsby Food Bowl Provides Relief from Whisker Stress

Dr._Catsby

Have you noticed your cat pulling food out of the bowl, throwing it next to the bowl, and then proceeding to eat it? Perhaps your cat uses her paw to “fish” food out of her food bowl? Does she constantly demand food even though her bowl is half full? Does she consistently finishes only part of her meal? If you notice any of these signs, your cat may be experiencing whisker stress.

What is whisker stress?

Whiskers are extremely sensitive, and when a food bowl is too narrow and too deep, a cat is...

Keep Your Cats Safe and Happy at Halloween

Halloween_cats

I bet if cats had their say, they’d abolish Halloween. From a cat’s perspective, there’s not much to love about a holiday when strangers come knocking at your door, your humans dress up in weird outfits and scary looking masks, and some humans even try to put you in costumes. The following tips will help you reduce the stress of this holiday for your feline family members and keep them safe so everyone can have a happy Halloween.

Decorations, electrical cords and candles

Keep decorations and el...

Better With Pets Summit Celebrates Human Animal Bond

Better_With_Cats_2014

Earlier this week, I had a chance to attend the Better with Pets Summit in New York City. The summit was sponsored by Purina*, and while my nutritional philosophy differs greatly from that of Purina when it comes to species-appropriate nutrition for cats, I appreciate the work the company is doing to foster the human-animal bond. This year’s summit focused on how technology and scientific advances are leading to a brighter future with our pets. The daylong event featured 15 expert presentatio...

Mews and Nips: Cat Receives Lifesaving Blood Transfusion from a Dog

cat_blood_transfusion

Buttercup, a Florida cat whose red blood cell count had fallen to dangerously low levels, received a transfusion of canine blood that save her life. Buttercup’s veterinarians didn’t have ready access to feline blood, and time was of the essences. Cross-species transfusions are a risky procedure. “You can’t give type A blood to a type B blood cat because it’ll cause a severe immune reaction,” said Dr. Sean Perry, who performed the procedure at Marathon Veterinary Hospital in Florida.”It was ac...

Review: Lola: Diary of a Rescued Cat by Dawn White

Lola_rescue_cat

When Dawn White first saw the photo of a sick, pathetic looking tabby on Facebook, she was looking for a companion for her then almost three-year-old black and white Lexy. At the time, Lola was being cared for at Manhattan Cat Specialists after being rescued from a kill shelter. As happens to so many of us, there wassomething in Lola’s eyes that drew Dawnin. She visited Lola at the veterinary clinic, and it was, as she writes in Lola: Diary of a Rescue Cat, “the second best decision I ever ma...

Review: Stylish Printable Pet Planner

digital_pet_planner

Keeping your cats’ records organized can be essential for everyone’s health and safety, whether it’s for travel, medical emergencies, natural disasters, or simply keeping track of important dates. Allegra and Ruby each have a file folder, but to access anything, I have to flip through a lot of papers. When Stylish Printable Planners approached me about reviewing their pet planners, I was intrigued.

Planners are one of the best tools I know of to stay organized. There’s something about seeing i...
