Pod: Because Your Cat Is Too Precious to Lose

pod-gps-tracking

This post is sponsored by Pod

I can’t imagine anything more heartbreaking than a cat getting lost. I’m a firm proponent that all cats should be indoors, but I also realize that keeping cats indoors can be a controversial topic. But even with indoor only cats, accidents happen, and a cat may slip out and disappear.

When Sebastian Langton’s best friend Rango went missing in Sydney, Australia, two years ago, Langton was devastated. After losing Rango, who Langton called “the coolest cat on the...

Your Hypecarnivore: Why Senior Cats Need Protein to Thrive

senior-cat

Guest post by Elizabeth Colleran, DVM

The nutritional requirements of senior cats are unique when compared to those of humans and dogs. Elderly cats require more energy to maintain their body weight, in part because their fat and protein digestion is impaired. To compensate for impaired nutrient absorption, senior cats need to eat more food relative to their body weight than younger cats. This can be challenging as aging changes associated with decreased ability to smell and taste can cause...

Your Cat Photos Needed for Purrs of Wisdom: Enlightenment, Feline Style

purrs-of-wisdom-photos

Yes, I need more of your cat photos! First of all, thank you to all of you who have submitted photos of your torties for Tortitude: The Little Book of Cats With a Big Attitude. I received close to a thousand photos, and I loved “meeting” all of your torties. It was really hard to reduce the number of photos to only about 75 – if I could, I would use all of them! My publisher will have final say as to which of the photos will be used in the book, which will publish in February of 2016.

Now it...

Mews and Nips: The Alamo’s New Official Cat is a Tortie

Alamo-cat

Miss Isabella Francisca Veramendi de Valero — or Bella for short — was crowned the official Alamo cat on Thursday, the latest in a long line of cats residing at the monument. This beautiful tortoiseshell and white cat succeeded CC, short for Clara Carmack, who held the position for nearly 18 years. San Antonio Express News features a series of wonderful photos of Bella on the job.

If you missed any of the stories featured on The Conscious Cat this week, here’s a recap: on Monday, we offered...

Review: Mighty Little Man by Jonathon Scott Payne

Mighty-Little-Man

Some cat memoirs cover dramatic events in a cat’s or person’s life. Others showcase a cat’s special talents. And some memoirs simply chronicle life with cats, in all its ups and downs. Mighty Little Man: My Story, His Story, Our Story by Jonathon Scott Payne is one of those chronicles.

From the publisher:

Jonny, a US Air Force engineer, has faced many personal and professional challenges throughout his life, met quite a few successes and failures, and loved and lost his fair share of pets, b...

Tortie Detects Breast Cancer in Her Guardian

cat-detects-cancer

When Elizabeth Moore went to her local veterinary clinic to buy food for her cat Toby, she wasn’t planning on falling in love with a little tortie kitten. Little did she know that less than a year later, Lucy would save her life. Here is Lucy’s story, in Elizabeth’s own words.

Meeting Lucy

I was aware of Lucy before we actually met. Our vet had rescued two litters of kittens and they were all playing in a large enclosure when I went to collect food for Toby, our tuxedo cat. I first noticed a...

Even though Allegra and Ruby sleep in my bed with me at night, they still like to have plenty of napping options elsewhere in the house during the day, and they were super excited when Peach Pet Provisions sent us their newest product, the Peach Pillow Bed. You may recognize the name Peach from a product we previously introduced you to, the Kitty Lounger, which has remained one of Allegra and Ruby’s favorite napping spots.

Your Cat’s Visit to the Vet Starts at Home

cat-in-carrier

Cats don’t get the veterinary care they need. The findings of a feline health study conducted by Bayer Health Care found that 52% of America’s 74 million cats are not receiving regular veterinary care. Even more shocking, the study found that 80% of adopted cats are seen by a veterinarian right after they are adopted, and then not again for several years.

Why cats aren’t getting the care they need

There are two main reasons for these dismal statistics. One is the perception among many cat gu...
