Happy Father’s Day

fathers-day-cat-dad

Whether your kids are human or furry, enjoy your special day!

Father’s Day can be bittersweet for those of us whose fathers are no longer with us. My dad passed away 17 years ago, but I still get a little sad each year when Father’s Day comes around.

The photo above is one of my favorite photos of my dad. Can’t you just feel the love? I think it’s safe to say that nobody else in my life ever has or ever will love me as much as he did.

Last week, Netflix gave us a first look at the new documentary series Cat People, which will premiere on July 7. According to the description, “Cat People explores our fascinating relationship with cats through the lens of some the most remarkable, and surprising cat people in the world, defying the negative stereotypes of what it means to be a cat person while revealing the fundamental truths of what it means to have deep bonds with these fiercely independent, mysterious creatures.” We were d...

Remembering Ruby: That Time When the Girls Had a Tunnel Adventure

cat-tunnel

I am so grateful to have eight years of Ruby’s Reflections to look back on, even though of course, eight years isn’t nearly enough. We don’t realize how quickly we can forget the small, everyday things after we lose a loved one. It’s one of the many reasons why I encourage people to journal after they lose a cat and write down as many memories as they can. Capturing memories while they’re fresh in our minds is a precious gift to ourselves.

Today’s memory goes back to June 2011. Ruby had been w...

Cat Toy Safety: What To Look For in a Safe Toy

I’m pretty paranoid when it comes to making sure the toys I let Allegra play with are safe. We have plenty of “blind and deaf mice” at our house because I remove glued on eyes and ears from toy mice before I even give them to her. Toys with rubber bands or elastic are a no-no, and it goes without saying that any interactive wand toys with string are never left out and only used when I play with the her. Cat toy safety is paramount at...

The Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed Makes Vet Visits Easier for Cats and Vets

Sleepypod-mobile-pet-bed

This post is sponsored by Sleepypod*

While the cat carrier may not be your cat’s favorite place, it is an important part of your cat’s life, and it can be vital in an emergency.  Unfortunately, for most cats, the only time they’re in a carrier is when they have to go to the veterinarian, so the association with carriers is often a negative and stressful one. Because the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed is so much more than just a carrier, it eliminates the negative association and makes vet visits eas...

Play Therapy and the Assisi Loop: A Purrfect Combination

This post is sponsored by Assisi Animal Health*

Play is vitally important to a cat’s mental and physical health, and it’s especially important for indoor cats. Even though cats may sleep up to 16 hours a day, when they’re awake, they need stimulation and exercise, and the best way to accomplish this is with play. While some cat parents are taking their cats outside for leash walks, the average indoor cat doesn’t get much exercise, and we know that exercise is an important component of vibrant ...

Sunday Quotes: Priorities

cat-on-desk

As I’ve been re-emerging into post-pandemic live, I’ve been thinking a lot about priorities. Rather than just returning to normal, I am determined to make conscious choices about how I spend my time and who I spend it with. If nothing else, this past year has been a glaring reminder of just how short life can be, and how precious the time we’re given really is.

Has the past year changed how you think about your priorities?

Mews and Nips: The Magic of Cats and Music

kittens-piano

One of the wonderful things that came out of the pandemic was the creativity of artists from around the world collaborating virtually to create beautiful music. And because everything is better with cats, South African musician David Scott turned his cat’s meow into a lovely song:

And then, things got even more magical: People from all over the world joined in:

This is one of these instances when art, cats and technology come together to create the purrfect symphony.

If you missed any of th...
