Mews and Nips: Why Do Cats Like to Make Biscuits?

cat-kneading-making-biscuits

Okay, not those kinds of biscuits! But seriously, having a cat knead you with their paws, also known as “making biscuits,” is one of the sweetest feelings in the world, isn’t it? The Conversation explored this topic in depth, presenting several theories as to why cats do this. Click here to read Why do cats knead with their paws.

If you missed any of the stories featured on the Conscious Cat this week, here’s a recap: on Sunday, we celebrated Father’s Day, on Monday, we shared important inform...

How Cats and Breakables Can Co-Exist

If you like displaying special items around your home in something other than a cat-proof curio cabinet, I have the purrfect solution for you: museum putty!

Even though I’m not a fan of clutter, I like to have some special items on my shelves, including ceramic cat statues. And all have survived intact, thanks to something called Quake Hold, which is a catchy  name for museum putty.

Quake Hold is non-toxic and is easy to apply on any surface. It works on wal...

Wanted: Senior Siamese Cats for Long Term Observational Study

siamese-cats

Guest post by Ingrid R. Niesman, MS PhD

I love Siamese cats. My family had two as we grew up. I adopted my first female right out of college and she became my constant companion and source of joy. I’m currently owned by two seven-year-old Siamese cats. Uli is a purebred classic seal-point and Paterson is a seal-point rescue with mixed heritage.

As readers of The Conscious Cat, you have seen several articles about my research delving into the color-pointing appearance of Siamese cats and putat...

limited-edition-cat-pens-squishy-cat-pen

Anything that makes your work day more fun is a plus in my book, and Triple T Studios’ new Squishy Cat Pens are sure to make you smile. And yes, they’re squishy!

They’re sort of like a stress ball, only softer. And they write really nice, too.

The pens are six inches long and about two inches wide between the ears. They come in three different colors and with black or blue ink. Triple T Studios can’t guarantee the color, but you can request gray and white, yellow and brown, or brown and white ...

Food Safety Without Compromise: Darwin’s Maintains the Integrity of Raw Cat Food While Keeping it Safe

raw-food-safety

This post is sponsored by Darwin’s Natural Pet Food and contains affiliate links*

Embraced for decades by holistically oriented pet parents and holistic veterinarians, raw feeding is becoming more mainstream as pet parents look for alternatives to feeding highly processed commercial pet foods.

Cat parents who are new to raw feeding are often concerned about the safety of raw diets. Sadly, there is a lot of misinformation about the purported risks of feeding raw in the mainstream veterinary co...

Happy Father’s Day

fathers-day-cat-dad

Whether your kids are human or furry, enjoy your special day!

Father’s Day can be bittersweet for those of us whose fathers are no longer with us. My dad passed away 17 years ago, but I still get a little sad each year when Father’s Day comes around.

The photo above is one of my favorite photos of my dad. Can’t you just feel the love? I think it’s safe to say that nobody else in my life ever has or ever will love me as much as he did.

Remembering Ruby: That Time When the Girls Had a Tunnel Adventure

cat-tunnel

I am so grateful to have eight years of Ruby’s Reflections to look back on, even though of course, eight years isn’t nearly enough. We don’t realize how quickly we can forget the small, everyday things after we lose a loved one. It’s one of the many reasons why I encourage people to journal after they lose a cat and write down as many memories as they can. Capturing memories while they’re fresh in our minds is a precious gift to ourselves.

Today’s memory goes back to June 2011. Ruby had been w...
