What to Make to Sell Online

A Making, Marketing, and Buying Calendar for Creatives

Do you own or want to start a handmade business? If so, you know the struggle of deciding what to make to sell online. The choices are seemingly endless, and it can be hard to predict exactly what your customers will want and when they want it. This blog post will give you an overview of the key dates to keep in mind for your business and help you figure out when to buy materials and make new inventory so you can be there when your customer needs you.

It can be overwhelming to plan your year. There are seemingly endless holidays you can purchase or create products for, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But don’t worry, today I’m sharing with you one of my very favorite planning tools, my seasonal marketing calendar!

Get started by making a list of holidays that are important to your business. I love this calendar from my friends at Printful because it’s a very comprehensive list of all the holidays you may want to commemorate in your small business, but it’s a long list and you may need some help narrowing it down. So today, I’m sharing with you the tool I use to plan for my own eCommerce business, Cabooties.

You can choose from the prefilled PDF version of this tool (my favorite) but in case you need more flexibility I’ll send you a blank Canva template too!

Here’s a quick rundown of what I like to launch and clearance each month. There are lots of other holidays and special occassions that are not included on this list. Please feel free to add and omit selling occasions based on what is relevant to your audience.

Monthly Overview:

January: Launch Valentines and St. Patrick’s Day; Clearance Winter and Holiday

February: Launch Spring and Easter (the date for Easter changes each year so plan accordingly!); Clearance Valentines Day

March: Launch Spring and Easter (if it falls in April); Clearance St. Patrick’s Day

Assign one color to each main area you need to schedule (work, family life, sports, church, whatever takes up regular blocks of your time). Once your have your writing utensiles, mark off any set times where weekly obligations take place (practice, meetings, etc.).Now, review the remaining activities on your list and schedule them in your remaining blocks. It’s so easy to fill every moment of the day with work – don’t forget to prioritize the things that feed your mental health too!Post your schedule in a place where you can see it, and check off each task as you accomplish it. Over time, you’ll build routines and you won’t need to refer to the schedule as often, but don’t skip this step when you start out! How to avoid burnout as a work from home mom

There’s no question that being a work-from-home mom is a juggling act. It can be hard to find the right balance between working and taking care of your family. But with a little bit of organization and planning, you can avoid burnout and stay sane while you juggle it all. Here are some tips to help you get started.

How to avoid burnout as a busy working momGet dressed every day, even if you don’t plan on leaving the house. You don’t have to get dressed up, changing from nighttime PJ pants to daytime leggings is totally OK.Take small moments for yourself throughout the day to move your body and get some fresh air. Even if it’s just a few seconds in a room with no kids or work, taking a moment to focus on your breath can do wonders for your mental health. Talk to other moms who work from home – they’ll be a great support system. Don’t have a network of moms? I’m here for you. Send me an email any time.Keep a planner or calendar to track your time and make sure you’re staying on schedule. This doesn’t need to be anything fancy. I like to use Google Calendar on my laptop, Good Notes on my Ipad, and a plain old notebook for jotting down to-do lists and ideas.Drink plenty of water and eat healthy foods to keep your energy up. If you’re rolling your eyes, I’ve got a tip to save you time! I love the app MeaLime to plan meals quickly. You can calibrate it to your family’s dietary needs and preferences and it instantly spits out tasty recipes and a grocery list that you can sync to your favorite grocery pickup service. I’ve used the pro version of this app for years, but the free plan is great too!Schedule free time into your calendar. Does this feel silly yes? Is it important? Also yes. It’s so easy to fill every moment of your time with commitments and obligations. Blocking off a few hours a week for playtime with the kids, walks with your neighborhood friends, family dinner, or a date with your partner is so important, and it will only happen if you prioritize it. Add it to your schedule now and start enjoying your rest. Your family and career life will improve when you’re well-rested and happy!

Burnout is a real thing, and it can happen to anyone. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or like you can’t keep going at the pace you are, take a step back and reevaluate your situation. Maybe there are some things you can delegate or outsource so that you have more time for yourself. Or maybe it’s time to set some stricter boundaries for when work stops and play begins. Whatever route you decide to take, make sure that taking care of yourself is always a priority. You – and your family – will be glad you did. Have any tips on how other work-from-home moms can avoid burnout? Share them in the comments below!

Finalist for Judy Grahn Award for Lesbian Non-fiction

A highlight of my recent trip to Boston and AWP was hearing Jeanette Winterson speak and read from her recent memoir WHY BE HAPPY IF YOU CAN BE NORMAL. (I learned IMAGINARY JESUS is a finalist for the Publishing Triangle's Judy Grahn Award for non-fiction. My fellow contenders are Jeanette Winterson and Alison Bechdel. Oh well.) Winterson is an amazingly strong woman and moving writer. A favorite quotation from her talk "When my bone breaks, I visit a doctor. When my heart breaks, I visit a poet." She also told us to reject the notion that reading is purely a "leisure" activity reserved for when we have nothing else to do. For many of us, reading is what we live for. We can do it in the middle of the day if we like. (Another highlight--a candy bar with Imaginary Jesus and me both on the wrapper.)

Typing an early draft of My Almost Certain Real Imaginary Jesus

As I've told many people at readings, I typed an early draft of the memoir on my Royal Quiet Deluxe. Though it might seem a completely strange and unnecessary thing to do, for me it was an exercise in maintaining privacy until I was entirely ready for the draft to enter the world. Here's a picture of the original laptop. I'm working on a draft of the memoir here on a painting trip with my partner Lisa. I'm sitting in her faithful Ford Ranger, which still doubles as her outdoor painting studio.
See photos of me typing an early draft at www.kellybarth.com
