International Booker Prize 2021 – longlist announcement

On 30th March, the judges of the 2021 International Booker Prize reveal the 13 novels longlisted for the prestigious award which celebrates the finest translated fiction from around the world.

Complementing The Booker Prize for Fiction, the prize is awarded every year for a single book that is translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland. It aims to encourage more publishing and reading of quality works of imagination from all over the world, and to give greater recognition to the role of translators. National Crayons Day

National Crayon Day on March 31  sparks fond memories of childhood creations in full color as we celebrate one of America’s most beloved toys, the crayon! Crayons delight our senses not just with their brilliant colors but also with their distinct smell, the feel of them in our hands, and for some kids, the waxy taste. In India, at Kidsfreesouls Swagat, we have #EverydayCrayons – why just a Day?

Crayons have a colorful history. While hued wax molds have existed for centuries, the modern-day crayon got its start in the 1900s.

Crayola crayons were introduced in 1903 by Binney & Smith as a safer and cheaper alternative to the art utensils in use at that time.  Binney & Smith premiered their famous eight-pack of crayons with the color line-up: Black, Brown, Orange, Violet, Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow. This color mix, along with their names, remained unchanged for 45 years.

Since then, many colors have been added, color names and packaging have changed, and color styles such as neon, metallics, and glitter have emerged. A few colors have even been retired from the color wheel, typically on March 31.

Crayola Crayons was one of the original inductees into the National Toy Hall of Fame in November 1999. It is estimated the average American will have used 730 crayons by their 10th birthday. Even Mr. Fred Rogers has had his hand in the history of crayons by molding the official 100 billionth crayon in February 1996 at the Crayola plant in Easton.

Crayons not only add color to our lives, but they’ve also been held as an analogy for the colorfulness of the human race and our ability to live together in a diverse world. Robert Fulghum, the American author, once said, “We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, while others bright, some have weird names, but they all have learned to live together in the same box.”

Let the creative juices flow with Every Day Crayons use. Crayons bring out the crafty side in us so having a dedicated day to this artistic tool can get the creative juices flowing. Colors is for Everyone and have an amazing calming effect. The recent Pandemic has seen many flourishing Zoom classes online to soothe the mind with the expert teachers teaching lessons in Art.

When Daddy was a little boy by Alexander Raskin (Translated from Russian by Fainna Glagoleva

William Shakespeare said, “It is a wise father that knows his own child.” Perfectly fitted quote for this Book ‘When Daddy was a little boy.’

When Daddy was a Little Boy by Alexander Raskin is a wonderful Book – A Russian Book translation for every child and Dad. Published by Ponytale Books, the translated version is by Fainna Glagoleva with creative drawings by Lev Tokmakov.

The Book takes you down memory lane of how-what-when-where-whom incidents happened and all wise wisdom shared to a young daughter by the Author. The Book itself is a nice collection of memoirs of a man from the days when he was a kid and its something that relates to all Dads when they were little boys. The Author narrates his roller coaster rides – a journey from a kid to being a Dad and narrates the incidents to his daughter. When Sasha was ill, these stories made her feel soothing and took her to a comfort zone. Her mind was filled with curiousity and joy and she learnt important lessons in life through these lovely tales. In this Book, her Dad talked of simple but real life happennings and how he managed to face situations.

Covered in Three Chapters, there are numerous incidents narrated by the Author that focus on moral values, feelings, learning, making mistakes, being naughty, learning etiquettes, adventures and a lot more stories that actually happened in real life.

The Three chapters are:
When Daddy was a Little Boy
When Daddy was in School
More Stories

What I felt after reading :

Impacts tiny minds. They tend to know their Dads as a “hero” and recognize his strenghs, ability, wits, weaker points.Positive/Negative effects and learning from these stories to be better humansKids don’t love to be Told, scolded, scoffed, bullied – And, these stories simply teach them lessons to learn. Afterall, Dads and adults too, make mistakes.Feelings and emotions are natural. When you fall sick, you’re hurt, when you make a mistake, when you’re teased or even played pranks, just to be caught. And Sasha’s Dad had a point somewhere to be noted. Some things required courage – especially when you’ve told a lie and get the inner conscious bite; when you’re not the best pupil in the class and been nagged; when you’ve done an act of courage like Sasha’s Dad talked of killing a snake, climbing a wall, jumped off the balcony and more stories. An Adventurous mindset – going places – eg. go for tiger hunting and realize never to hurt animals after hurting the little striped kitten. Also writing compositions on own and understanding the fact that you will never learn if you don’t do your work yourself.Lessons to learn to not be Greedy, boastful or stuck up anytime.

You will be fascinated with the discovery of these real stories. And, one story that my Grandson Hridaan and I loved to read was ‘How Daddy decided what he wanted to be’ – I loved to read many other stories but particularly to mention this is because it tells of a small boy’s dreams and aspirations, the changing wish ‘To be’ and finally in the end, learning to be a Good Person. That’s what really counts. And, it’s so very true.

For a quick mention, here’s some quick titles for quick reads from this Book:

How Daddy’s feelings were hurt
How Daddy studied Music
How Daddy made a Mistake
How Daddy was always late
How Daddy learned to write
How Daddy was Teased
How Daddy failes to learn German
How Daddy had scarlet fever

And, the list go on – many Stories that actually happens to Dads when they’re small and experience life.

A Must Read, Must to be Gifted to Parents and Kids – a Chapter Read – a Story a Day will chase blues away. All 5 Stars ***** and Thank You Ponytale Books for this wonderful Translated version.

World Poetry Day – 21st March

https://www.un.org/en/observances/wor... Poetry Day is celebrated on 21 March, and was declared by UNESCO in 1999, “with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard”. In celebrating World Poetry Day, March 21, UNESCO recognizes the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind.

Held every year on 21 March, World Poetry Day celebrates one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity. Practiced throughout history – in every culture and on every continent – poetry speaks to our common humanity and our shared values, transforming the simplest of poems into a powerful catalyst for dialogue and peace.

UNESCO first adopted 21 March as World Poetry Day during its 30th General Conference in Paris in 1999, with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.

World Poetry Day is anoccasion to honour poets, revive oral traditions of poetry recitals, promote the reading, writing and teaching of poetry, foster the convergence between poetry and other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and raise the visibility of poetry in the media.

At Kidsfreesouls, Swagat Children Library- we celebrate Poetry Month in April. Carry a Poetry in your Bag, write it and Gift someone. Poetry writing is Imaginary, a word play and dreamy thoughts.

You are Tracked ! Incognito mode

Google Incognito Users – You are Tracked ! Incognito does not mean invisible. Google makes it clear that just because you are browsing on Incognito mode that does not mean you are not being tracked. When you are browsing on the Incognito mode on Google Chrome, you are still being tracked.

Browsing on Incognito does not protect your online privacy, and Google wants to be very clear about it.The whole point of the incognito mode, as Google has explained, is that the mode “gives users the choice to browse the internet without activity being saved to their browser or devices”. This does not extend to the sites users are visiting, those sites are still going to track them.

Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda told The Verge – “We clearly state each time you open a new incognito tab, websites might be able to collect information about your browsing activity during your session”.

drseussbks

Six Dr Seuss books will no longer be published because of racially insensitive imagery, the company that preserves the author’s legacy has said.Among the six children’s titles being withdrawn are If I Ran the Zoo, Scrambled Eggs Super, McElligot’s Pool and On Beyond Zebra!”These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” Dr Seuss Enterprises said in a statement .It said the decision was made after consulting experts and teachers.”Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr Seuss Enterprises’ catalogue represents and supports all communities and families,” it added.

The other books affected are And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street- Dr Seuss’s first book, published in 1937 – and The Cat’s Quizzer. The Cat In The Hat, one of Dr Seuss’s most popular books, has also received criticism but will continue to be published for now.The announcement was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the late American author and illustrator’s birthday.
