Please Amazon Responsibly

Wall Street Howdy, faithful readers. It's me--your friendly, movie-and-media-loving blogger, Bryce. Today I'm here with a very special announcement. Look over on the right of my blog. See that little Amazon search box? (Well, assuming you haven't blocked ads on my site. If you have unblock them. Just for me. :-) ) Anyway. That little search box lets you search Amazon from my blog. I know--not really shocking. But you know what's cooler? If you enter Amazon through that little search box, then end up buyi...

To Pirate or Not to Pirate

Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

I wrote up a post for my library blog that I wanted to share with you faithful readers, since it's on some subjects I've been thinking about for a bit. Enjoy!

CrunchGear (a blog I follow fairly closely, and which I recommend) had a post up the other day on the future of piracy. Basically, their argument is that sooner or later, quality material on the web will live behind a pay wall--you'll have to pay to view it. Not pay a ton, mind you, but pay something. On the other hand, Scott Adams (t...

Nothing Happening, Despite the High Level of Busy

Seinfeld - The Complete Series I took a fairly impromptu trip to New Hampshire last weekend, taking the family down to visit with my mother while she went to a knitting conference. No--I didn't attend said knitting conference. I swam in the pool and lolled in front of the air conditioner. Maine's been awfully hot and humid lately (complained the Mainer, who knows some of his readers are down south, where temperatures in the 90s sound blissfully cool to them), and so it was nice to get away for a few days and relax.

So wha...

Movie Review: Knight and Day

Knight & Day In the "Better Late than Never" category, Denisa and I went out to the movies a week and a half ago. Remember that chat we had about it? Yeah, well anyway--we saw Knight and Day, and I forgot to tell you all what I thought of it. I'll remedy that now. A lot of the times, your experience with a movie can really depend on your expectations of it. If you go in thinking you're going to be blown away, but aren't, you walk out disappointed. (Side story on this one--the first time I saw A League of ...

Summer, How I Loathe Thee. Let Me Count the Ways

(500) Days of Summer There was a time I liked summer. We got along great, mainly because she was all about fun. Freedom from responsibility. No more teachers, no more books and all that rah rah. Then, things started to change. She wanted attention all the time. The relationship became more about work and less about fun. That's when I started noticing winter. How cool she was. Slick. And I began to notice all the flaws of summer that the fun had just been masking:

Bugs
Heat
Humidity
Lawn mowing
Weeding
Sand

Heading Over to Blogger

Livejournal friends, the time has come. I've been with LJ now for over three years. More than 750 posts, total. But LJ has never really done that much for me. I've never been in love with the interface--and I really dislike how little control I have over how my blog looks and is laid out. Thus, I'm ditching Livejournal for Blogger.

That's right, woodchuck chuckers: if you want to keep reading me, you're gonna have to mosey on over to http://brycesramblings.blogspot.com/, where you'll get all t...

Thoughts on Technology

Another blog entry bleed over from my  library blog. I write about technology advancements on Tuesdays, and I had some thoughts that I thought some of you might be interested in, as well. Here's the post:

The past week or two have been big ones in terms of technology updates. It all started last week with Apple's announcement of iPhone 4, the latest version of their hit smart phone. This new iteration comes complete with a higher resolution screen, a front facing camera (making video phone ...

Investing

I received some money as an inheritance from my grandfather a bit ago, and since I got it, I've been trying to decide what to do with it. Should I use it to buy something physical--a new sofa, or something like that? Or maybe put it toward a family experience--a trip somewhere, perhaps? After much hemming and hawing, I decided to invest it, which is something I think my grandfather would have heartily approved of. My first inclination was to put it all into a single stock, but after speaking ...

Book Reviews: Catching Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest

Catching Fire (Hunger Games, #2) Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book, and I thought it was a great followup to Hunger Games. Suzanne Collins does a fine job extending the problems and challenges that were yet to be solved from the first book. However, it didn't quite have the same OH MY GOSH THIS IS SO AWESOME feeling as the first book. The problem is, I can't really get into why it lacked that feeling without spoiling the book for readers, and I firmly believe that spoiling thi...

Leatherman Surge

I'm a Leatherman junkie. I freely admit it. Since high school (maybe even before--I can't remember), I've always had a Leatherman attached to my belt. Why? Well, why not? You never know when one of these little puppies is gonna come in handy. Like the time I was in Germany and wanted to use the phone, but I couldn't because the phone card slot already had a card stuck in it. I whipped out my Leatherman, got out the pliers, and took out the card. Problem solved. That sort of thing happens all ...
