Meet the Neighbors Welcomes Margery Scott and TREY

margery -cropped 200x300 (2)Meet the Neighbors is pleased to have Margery Scott talking about Trey, her second novella in the Morgans of Rocky Ridge Trilogy.

Tell us about your release.

Trey is the second novella in the Morgans of Rocky Ridge trilogy. Trey is a gambler who reminds me a lot of Bret Maverick in the old Maverick TV series. Am I dating myself? He’s happy-go-lucky, likes the ladies, and avoids any kind of responsibility or commitment. At the same time, he doesn’t run from trouble and has a protective streak.

This series originally was one novella about Cade Morgan, but somewhere during the course of writing Cade’s story, his cousins Trey and Zane, demanded their own books. Who am I to argue? J

Trey sounds like my bullrider, Jesse. What’s your writing schedule?  Are you a full time writer?

I am a full time writer in that I don’t have another job, but I can’t say I write full time. I get distracted far too easily and spend far too much time checking email, surfing the web and playing computer games.

What’s your writing must have snack?  Or drink?

I don’t need a snack, but before I even sit down to write, I make a jumbo cup of hot tea. I replenish it as often as necessary, but drinking so much forces me to get up from the computer regularly J

I’m trying not to eat at the desk, but I do love a cup of apple cinnamon tea. How long does it take you to write a book?

Every book is different, but I’d say anywhere between four and six months. Some books are harder to write, whether because of the premise, or the genre. I write both historical romance and suspense. So far, suspense novels take much longer for me to write.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

When I’m not writing or doing research for a novel, I’m either shooting pool or doing some kind of handicrafts. Pool is my other passion. I play in a pool league and compete every year for a trip to Las Vegas to take part in the National APA Pool Championships. My team has been lucky enough to win the trip twice. At home, I spend a lot of time knitting and crocheting, especially afghans and baby clothes.

I used to play darts for a long time. Pool, I don’t see the angles. J How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve written ten full-length novels and two novellas. My favorite is one I haven’t finished yet.

 Would you consider self-publishing?

Eleven of my twelve finished works are self-published. My debut “traditionally published” book is a romantic suspense novel from Entangled Publishing which will be released in October.

Looking forward to your Entangled release. Woo Hoo! Good luck with Trey!

MargeryScott_Trey2_200px (2)TREY Blurb:

When Trey Morgan wins half a saloon in a poker game, he heads back to Rocky Ridge, Colorado to sell his share and move on, back to the life he loves – no responsibilities, no ties. But he doesn’t expect his partner to be Claire O’Doyle, a beautiful Irish redhead who captivates him like no other woman ever has.

Claire O’Doyle has no use for men like Trey. They remind her too much of the father who abandoned her and her mother.  She’d love nothing more than to pay Trey off and get him out of her life. But someone is trying to run her out of Rocky Ridge, and she doesn’t need the distraction of a man whose charm makes her forget her vow to stay away from gamblers.

As the threats escalate, so does Claire and Trey’s attraction to each other. But will Trey walk away? And if he does, will Claire let him go?

Hot Summer Romance Giveaway Hop

Hot_summer_romance_giveaway_hop_graphicIt’s hop time. :)

Grand Prizes - We have two grand prizes. #1 is a Kindle Fire. #2 is a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate

Remember, the more places you stop and comment, the better your chances are on winning something.

And, I’ll give one lucky winner a choice of one of my three back list books.

So, be sure to leave your email. And visit the other sites here.

My love of Bad Boys…

I have to admit, I’ve always had a thing for the tortured hero. Men who are dark, dangerous, and angsty get me all worked up. In high school, it was the motorcycle riding out cast. In college, the close to dropping out rebel. And in my stories, I love the men who aren’t sure of what they really want, except when they look at the heroine.

Rhett Butler. Oh. My. God.

Return-of-the-Fae-mockupThe heroes I write have a lot on their minds. Take Ty Wallace, my hero in The Council series. Finding rogue witches and winning legal arguments kept Ty busy. Too busy for anything but a casual fling here and there.  So when he realizes that Parris might be his soul mate, he’s intrigued but wary. The girl isn’t who she portrays herself to be, that is the one thing he knows for sure.  The fact he’s falling head over heels for her, he has to ignore. At least for now.  And in Return of the Fae, the second in the series, Ty’s digging deep, trying to solve the mystery that is Parris’ life.

So, your turn. You love bad boys? Or the more solid, traditional boy next door?

Meet the Neighbors – return guest MJ Schiller and Abandon All Hope

Meet the Neighbors is pleased to have fellow Illinois -ian? MJ Schiller here talking about her new book and the difference between a series and a collection. Welcome!

Snapshot_picmonkeyed 1Good morning and thank you, Lynn, for having me here today!

I’m going to admit to something here. I may have gotten myself into a bit of a spot. You see, the second in my ROCKING ROMANCE COLLECTION is out now and I’m not sure it’s going to be what people expect. When the first book, TRAPPED UNDER ICE, came out, I was lucky enough to have some people fall in love with my main characters, Beth and Chad.

So where’s the problem, MJ? Right?

The problem lies in the fact that the difference between a collection and a series is not always understood. Two different monsters all together! A series follows the same characters through a span of time, usually in chronological order, but not always. A collection is a group of books gathered around a common theme; in this case, rock romances. After TRAPPED I got comments like, “Can’t wait to see what you have in store for Chad and Beth next!” Still other readers had the next book pegged as Roger’s book (Chad’s best friend). I’m not saying there won’t be a Roger story somewhere down the line. (I do love his character. He’s a hoot!) But right now, that’s not in the works.

ABANDON ALL HOPE, the second in the ROCKING ROMANCE COLLECTION, is not about any of these characters. It is the story of photo journalist Hope Creswell and rock star Chase Hatton. Their story begins when they were kids, follows them into their teens, and brings them back together after an eight year separation. Compared to TRAPPED UNDER ICE, it’s a lot lighter read, in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still some danger lurking. Hope tries to uncover the story behind a reputed mobster’s ties with a city councilman and runs into trouble. And her father is one unpalatable character, let me tell you. But the love story has a sweet sadness that’s different from TRAPPED. Don’t fear, Hope and Chase get their happily ever after at the end. I wouldn’t gyp you all out of that.

Another difference between the two books is that Chase and Chad are dissimilar rock stars. While Chase is as successful as the lead singer from Trapped Under Ice, he purposefully keeps out of the limelight and doesn’t participate in some of the activities that are generally associated with rockers (i.e.- drugs, drinking, and womanizing). I had my editor question some of his activities saying, “Would a rock star do this?” That’s like saying, “Would a dentist trash a hotel room?” Maybe not your average dentist, but it is not completely out of the question for anyone to do something like that. Chase does not have a cook. His home is fairly average. He does utilize a chauffeur and a pilot for a personal plane, but he also likes to do work around the house that he could easily hire out. In other words, he is a real person. Yes, with some of the baggage that goes along with fame, but a real person none-the-less.

Another place where the two books diverge is that Chase’s band is hardly mentioned in ABANDON ALL HOPE. This was intentional. They are not integral to the story, or really to his life.  He is like a Sting or a Madonna. Can you name the members of Madonna’s band? I’m sure they are talented musicians, but they are not part of the public package. And Madonna may or may not hang out with them or know their families or what their order at Starbuck’s would be. We all run our lives differently. So do my rock stars.

Anyway, just a little FYI to help you know what not to expect from the second book in the ROCKING ROMANCE COLLECTION. Now that I told you what ABANDON is not, let me tell you what it is.

AbandonHope_CVR_MEDBlurb:

It was one of those mornings for newspaper-writer/photographer Hope Creswell.  The alarm clock didn’t go off and she cut her finger on broken glass.  Not one to let such things get her down, Hope headed into her assignment meeting with excitement, only to leave it stunned.  Her new assignment is to trail the sensational rock-star, Chase Hatton, for an article.  Chase Hatton!  No one knows the power that name holds for her.  No one knows of the childhood friendship that blossomed into romance, only to abruptly die on the night of Hope’s senior prom.  No one knows of the ache that still fills her heart.

What starts out for Chase Hatton as an average publicity trip to Chicago suddenly becomes complicated when his manager tells him that Hope Creswell will be interviewing him in the morning.  He had spent eight years trying to forget Hope, and now she would be in his penthouse in a matter of hours?

When Chase opens the door to his penthouse and finds Hope on the opposite side, his heart begins beating a rhythm the rocker has yet to capture in any of his music.  The smoldering embers of their former romance are fanned by their mere proximity.  Will they both be burned again?  Can Hope ever trust her heart to Chase after what he did?  Can Chase bear to see her walk out on him a second time?  And what about Hope’s boyfriend, Phillip?  Where does he fit into the picture that Hope is developing?

Excerpt-

Hope had expected someone else to open the door—a manager, a groupie, a chauffeur, anyone—but not him. She had been in the initial phases of bracing herself for seeing him again, when suddenly he was there in front of her. She was unprepared.

She eyed him. He hadn’t changed much, except for his hair. When they were younger, it had been about the same shade of brown hers was. Now, someone, a manager or promoter, perhaps, had convinced him to dye his hair blond, and he wore it longer than he had in high school, just to his collar, and long on top. The clothes he wore now were different, too. He seemed to have traded in his t-shirts and shorts for black jeans and an expensive-looking, scarlet-colored, button-down shirt. But when Hope peered into his eyes, she was flooded with memories of past times, and a warm feeling spread over her, both welcome and uncomfortable at the same time.

She took in her surroundings, resisting the urge to run across the wide, circular room and peer out the windows covering the far wall where the light streamed in across the lush carpeting. Directly in front of them was a sunk-in area with two large, semicircular couches with an ornate, round table between them. To the left was a wet bar with funky v-shaped stools, which looked somehow top-heavy, as if they would tip over at any moment. To the right was a big screen, plasma TV surrounded by comfortable seats, which had attached cup holders like in a movie theater.

“Wow, Chase! This is great!” She turned back to him. “You really have made something of yourself, haven’t you?”

He grinned. “I’ve done all right, I guess.”

“Done all right?” she exclaimed in surprise. “You’ve had six songs in the top ten in the past two years, and your first album went platinum in less than three months. I’d say you’ve done pretty damn good!” She laughed.

The sound of her voice was intoxicating, like a heady perfume, and he recalled now how she would occasionally insert a curse word into her speech just to catch him off guard and make him laugh.

“You haven’t changed a bit.”

“Oh yes, I have,” she said quickly, unable to keep the edge out of her voice. Hope looked down, moving her foot back and forth across the carpeting, watching as the color of the nap changed with each sweep, her hands clasped behind her back. I’m here for a story, that’s it, she reminded herself. She moved over to the window and gazed out over Chicago. Suddenly, she swayed forward and placed her hand on the glass to steady herself.

“Still afraid of heights, huh?”

Hope hadn’t realized he had followed her. She nodded mutely, surprised he had remembered something about her she had forgotten herself. Unable to resist the temptation, she turned to gaze at him, the pain engulfing her with a suddenness that was frightening. She didn’t want to remember or be reminded that he knew these things about her.

Friendship Is Like Gold – a Meet the Neighbors visit from Cynthia Gail

Headshot (1)Please welcome Soul Mate author Cynthia Gail. I love this message of hope and friendship. Glad you could visit Cynthia – the blog is yours for the day. :)

Thank you so much for hosting me on your blog today, Lynn. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and long weekend. It rained in Nashville for 5 days straight, but I took advantage by sleeping in each morning and enjoying a few lazy days on the couch with my computer.

One of the most frequent questions I get asked during interviews would be, ‘Is there ever a message in your stories that you hope the reader picks up on?’

Outside of the fact that I live in a state of perpetual hope, and believe there is a true love to be found by everyone, Spring’s Surprise includes a very meaningful message.

My heroine, Sara Michaels, has just gone through a nasty divorce AND she’s turning thirty. She’s spent the last ten years trying to be everything her husband wanted her to be – except herself. Trying to measure up, worrying about what others think, stressing that she can’t meet expectations.

The message I hope to convey in Spring’s Surprise, is that every woman should be proud of who she is and value herself enough to be her own person. We cannot change ourselves for someone else. We can always strive to be more, to be a better person, to grow in life. But true love and true friendship is someone accepting us for who we are, the way we are, right now.

Treat the friendship and love that you give as if they were gold coins in limited supply. Be frugal in your choices. Invest in relationships that lift you up and encourage you in your journey. Withhold nothing in those chosen few. Expect and allow nothing less in return.

Meet Cynthia Gail: My husband and I live in the suburbs of Nashville, Tennessee with our eighteen-year-old son and three dogs. When I’m not working or writing, I can be found with family and friends. I love to bake in the winter, grill in the summer, and on occasion, I sneak away from everyone and curl up with a good book.

SpringSurprise2_850 (1)And now a bit about Cynthia’s newest releaseSpring Surprise

Sara Michaels is single again. And she’s celebrating her thirtieth birthday with a complete spa makeover and a day of boutique shopping with her two best friends. After a ten-month battle for freedom, a long weekend in Nashville, Tennessee is just what she needs to erase the memories of a broken heart.

Jack Tanner is the soon-to-be new partner at Chester & Dorsey Development Firm. Jack’s love life has been on the back burner for years as he’s built a successful career. But the moment he meets Sara, he takes a hard look at his life and his priorities.

Sara steps out of her comfort zone and spends an unforgettable weekend with Jack. She’s never felt so carefree. Until she realizes too late that three days can change everything.

And – just because it’s a great cover – Here’s Winter’s Magic for your enjoyment. :)  WintersMagic2_850

All Katy can do is survive.

Surrounded by enemies, the only way she can come out of this is to adapt. After all, there are sides of Daedalus that don’t seem entirely crazy, but the group’s goals are frightening and the truths they speak even more disturbing. Who are the real bad guys? Daedalus? Mankind? Or the Luxen?

Meet the Neighbors welcomes Robyn Neeley and Destination Wedding

9781440568800Perfect time for a fun wedding read.  Meet the Neighbors is excited to host Robyn Neeley, one of my Crimson Romance fellow authors, with her DEBUT book, Destination Wedding.  Looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

Thanks, Lynn for having me today!

My favorite question first. What’s it like to be a debut author?

It’s so much fun and more than I could have ever imagined. Since November 2012, I’ve signed three contracts and having an absolute blast. I didn’t realize this a year ago when I really didn’t know any, but romance authors are incredibly supportive. I’ve met so many wonderful authors who continue to help me along the way.

I felt like I was working on a MFA my first year, there was so much to learn.  So tell me your call story.

It was perfect! I wrote the prologue to my holiday romance, Christmas Dinner on the train—and by “I wrote,” I mean I scribbled it on a notebook while tears streamed down my face. It was an unbelievably sad day. Two years and nine months later on my commute home, I received an e-mail from Crimson Romance saying that they loved the manuscript and wanted it for Crimson. It was so fitting that I was on the train when I received the e-mail. (I then proceed to share the good news with all the commuters around me!)

You must have brightened their day! Tell us about your release.

I love this story! Destination Wedding was really fun to write. I knew I wanted to start on a plane with some mistaken identity involving handsome twins who trade seats mid-flight and a heroine that has a major case of in-flight panic. What happens in the air, doesn’t stay up there and that’s where the fun begins.  It’s such a blast, and I think all of my characters make out pretty well … except for my hero’s twin, Drew, who had some words with me earlier this month on the Crimson Romance blog. Check it out!

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve received?

To keep writing! It’s such a tried-and-true piece of advice because it works! I see so many debut authors stop after their first book to see what happens. Don’t do it.  It’s sooooo important to keep writing.

Amen sister! Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

I’m a pantser by nature, but when I’m brainstorming ideas, I’ll take a week and let my mind wonder. I’ll listen to a lot of music during that time period on Sirius and my iPod. It usually takes me a week of really, really bad, unoriginal ideas to come up with the one that I think just might be a home run.

Tell us about your current WIP, including its genre. Does it cross over to other genres? If so, what are they?

OOOH! I’m so excited about my latest WIP. It’s a contemporary romance involving magical cake batter (that’s right! Cake batter!) and a town full of bachelors. It’s my first time including a magical component.

Okay, I love, love that idea.  :) List two authors we would find you reading when taking a break from your own writing.

Nicholas Sparks (he is the story twist master) and Elin Hildenbrand. Elin’s stories take place on Nantucket and are just fabulous! The Blue Bistro and Castaways are two of my favorites by Elin.

Thanks for stopping by Robyn, now get back to writing that cake batter book!

Destination Wedding

Wedding planner Kate Ashby’s fear of flying is eased by a sexy stranger and one slow lip lock that rockets her into another obit.

CEO Luke Cannon has just traded seats with his identical twin. Little did he know that an innocent kiss while pretending he was his brother would soon create havoc. What happens in the air doesn’t stay up there.

Once on tropical land, Kate believes that the handsome stranger who gave her the best kiss of her life is now her new client, Drew Cannon, fiance to the beautiful and wealthy Lauren Kincaid. While Kate struggles with the intense feelings she thinks she has for Drew, Luke discovers Kate’s been hired to plan his brother’s destination wedding. He also realizes the initial sparks they shared 30,000 feet up are now mistakenly aimed at Drew.

Can Luke get Kate to realize that the feelings she has are for him? He’s got forty-eight hours in paradise to try.

Recipe – Posole Soup

101_9608

I love a sign that tells me to eat.

I first found the recipe for polose in an old copy of bon appetit … but of course, I had to modify it.  My version came in at about 300 calories so with a warmed tortilla on the side a perfect lunch for the dieting Lynn.  Original and probably authentic version has pinto beans.  I don’t do beans. But of course the truly authentic version is made from a pigs head. Another thing I don’t eat. :)

Posole Soup – Lynn’s version.

Bake a Boston butt pork roast (about 2 pounds)  for 5-6 hours on low heat (275 degrees.) Before putting into the oven cover the roast with a rub made of the following:

1 Tbsp ground cumin
1tsp garlic powder
1 tsp smoked paprika

Sprinkle with salt and pepper, add 1/2 cup water to the bottom of the pan, and cover the top of the roast with 1/2 a sliced onion.

When this is done and cooled, the meat should shred to bite size pieces. Take out the fat while you’re shredding. Put aside to cool while the rest of the soup is prepared.  I cooked the meat the day before.

Now the soup -

Saute over medium heat in olive oil the following (in a large soup pot)

1/2 onion chopped (I like the sweet varieties)

After 5 minutes or when the onion is translucent, add

3 garlic cloves minced

Cook two more minutes, then add

2 small tomatoes – diced (I used Romas)

Stir until tomatoes are soften, then add

6 cups chicken broth
1 – 28 oz can hominy, drained
1- 28 oz can diced tomatoes
1 Tbsp oregano
2 tsp ground cumin
2 yukon gold potatoes – diced

Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cook until the potatoes are soft – about 30 minutes.

Add in shredded pork and salt/pepper to taste, let simmer another fifteen minutes.

And serve. I like a dollop of low fat sour cream and a sprinkle of cheddar over the top.

Comes out of the freezer amazing.

Let me know if you try it.
