Of course, I’ll still be blogging here and there, but July will see me with butt in chair, hands on keyboard, weaving a new Magic Council story.  I’m so excited about this fun, sexy romp.  I hope my editor will be as well.

And I’ll be here every week, talking about my life, my writing, what I’m reading, anything’s fair game.

Later!

Walking for the Cure

Today I’m taking time for me.  I’m walking in St. Louis’s Race for the Cure. I’ll be a hot mess when I’m done.

Last year, I came across a fifteen year survivor who at seventy, had just been told the cancer was back. She still walked.  I can too.

DEBUT AUTHOR – Kristina Knight – What a Texas Girl Wants.

Today I’m honored to have as my guest – Kristina Knight, Author of WHAT A TEXAS GIRL WANTS, published June 2012 – by Crimson Romance.  As one of my launch sisters, I’ve enjoyed getting to know Kristina and I loved reading WHAT A TEXAS GIRL WANTS.  Today she’s answered a few questions for us but I’m sure she’d answer a few more, if you ask.

What’s it like to be a debut author?

– it’s a little bit surreal, to be honest! I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. Most of the time it’s only been for me or a few close friends, so having my ‘baby’ out for public consumption is a little scary. Exhilirating and thrilling, but scary, too!

Tell me your call story.

– I have an Email Story, as most of the Crimson authors do! I was just finishing up a podcast with a couple of my RWA chapter-mates for an upcoming event. My iPad bleeped at me, letting me know I had corn to harvest in my Smurf’s village – yes, I play with Smurfs in my down-time. I noticed when I turned it on that I had 1 new message. I can’t ignore email, it’s a sickness, so I opened it up and…my life changed. I had an email from my editor, telling me she’d love to have my story. My life has in little steps every day for the past four months!

Tell us about your release.

– What a Texas Girl Wants is a marriage of convenience story with a twist – Kathleen and Jackson both had huge crushes on one another in college but never acted on their feelings. Ten years later, they wake up on a beach, hungover and married…

I love marriage of convenience stories!

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve received?

– Don’t give up. Writing is hard, it takes a thick skin and it takes dedication to the craft and belief in yourself. Because rejection is par for the course. Critique partners will hate your work sometimes, contest judges will be brutally honest and agents and editors will shoot down your ideas. You have to believe in your stories and abilities because no one else is going to believe for you. So, if you get knocked down, get back up and do it better the next time around.

Amen Sister Knight!  Seriously, I believe in the mantra Last Author Standing.

What’s your writing schedule?  Are you a full time writer?

– I am, although my writing is divided up a little. I’m a freelancer writer – business and lifestyle articles – as well as a romance novelist. Most days I work on non-fiction in the mornings, and fiction during nap time (I also have a 4-year-old running around the house!) and evenings.

Desert Island time – 3 must have books.

– I can’t choose just three…the other books will get mad at me. And there are waaaaaay more of them…

What’s your writing must have snack?  Or drink?

– something chocolatey and salty. And Coca-cola. Lots of Coca-cola. I’m trying to break my habit (iced green tea is a new addiction) but most days the Coke wins.

I allow myself one real Coke a day.  Sigh.  And I just tried chocolate covered pretzels.  A-MA-ZING.

Favorite writing advice guru?

– I’m a total fan-girl of Stephen King’s On Writing. I can’t read his fiction because I’m a complete and total wimp, but his writing advice is so amazing. Get a copy, write in the margins, highlight it, dogear the pages…it’s a read and re-read and re-read again book!

I love Mr. King’s work, fiction and the On Writing book.  Great suggestion.

Okay guys, your turn.  What didn’t I ask that you want to know?

WHAT A TEXAS GIRL WANTS BLURB: Kathleen Witte is a down-to-earth girl. She has to be, with the family ranch on the verge of success. After seven months of keeping it all together by swearing off men, however, Kathleen needs a bit of fun in the sun. Waking up with a husband she can’t remember isn’t how she planned to blow off steam.

The last thing Jackson Taylor wants in his life is a down-to-earth girl. He has four weeks of freedom in which to find his birth mother. He’s done well avoiding commitment until now, so when he wakes up on a Mexican beach with Kathleen his first reaction is curiosity. When he spies the matching wedding rings on their left hands curiosity turns to concern.

Neither Jackson nor Kathleen want to stay married, but when her family shows up, they have no choice. Once back in Texas, however, can they keep this all-business marriage from turning into an all-consuming love?

Time for Celebration and a Giveaway…

The Bull Rider’s Brother releases Monday June 4, 2012.

If you pre-ordered, bless you!  You kept me from being totally insane the last three weeks.

If you haven’t ordered yet, the release date is upon us.

There might even be a download of The Bull Rider’s Brother in the mix.

I’m spending some quality time at Main Street Books in St. Charles on Friday June 6th and you know I can’t walk out of there with just one book.  So there might be something else in the basket – an impulse prize.

How do you get your name the drawing in for this amazing package?

Lots of different ways.

So you see a theme…the contest ends at midnight on June 10th, 2012.  Winner will be announced no later than June 17th, 2012.

And you can get more than one entry into the drawing.  Buy the book, post a review, follow me on my blog tour… (I’ll be announcing stops this weekend.)

You get the point.

Thanks for being part of The Bull Rider’s Brother’s release party.  I hope you love reading Lizzie and James’s story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Food in Books

In the work in progress (the sequel to The Bull Rider’s Brother), my main character Barb is making cupcakes today as I write these pages.  Not open a cake mix, add water, cupcakes, but marbled chocolate devil’s food  from scratch  cup cakes.  With chocolate fudge frosting and sealed with a Hersey’s Kiss.

She’s also made banana bread in this same book.

In The Bull Rider’s Brother, Lizzie Hudson, my heroine makes her own bread and does a mean huckleberry muffin. (I’ll be posting this recipe over at Chicks in the Kitchen as part of my June Blog Tour for BRB.)

And while listening to Hot Rocks by Nora Roberts this week while driving to the day job, I found myself fascinated with the heroine’s recipe for chicken.

Since I’m obsessing with grits lately in my real kitchen, you can bet my next heroine will be cooking up some for her new honey.

I think I’m sensing a pattern.  I like reading and writing about food.

So what about you?  Any recipe’s you’ve stolen from your favorite fictional character?
