Wattabuk! – PlusMinus’n’More

Wisha Wozzariter by Payal Kapadia is two books in one.

The first is the story of Wisha Wozzariter (Wish-I-was-a-writer), a ten-year old girl who wishes to become a writer. She hates good books more than a bad book because they make her sigh and feel that she could have written them.

One day, as she is reading a book, Bookworm comes out of the book and insists that she write a book. Bookworm takes her to the Marketplace of ideas through the Thought Express and gets her an Imagination balloon (...

Indian Express reviews Horrid High

Born to parents who are not particularly interested in raising a child, 11-year-old Ferg Gottin is dumped in a residential school called Happy High. Only, it is really Horrid High, where orphans and abandoned children are sent to be forgotten, and where the teachers specialise in being, what else, but horrid. As Ferg flounders through Master Mynus’s Maths lessons and chokes over Chef Gretta’s obnoxious cooking (her larder is stocked with maggot-infested cheeses and rats’ tails and crow feathe...

The Hindu reviews Horrid High: High School Horror

Ferg Gottin has extraordinary skills but less- than ordinary parents. His mother searches for schools where she can ‘dump’ Ferg and forget about him and comes across Horrid High. Ferg has to manage and cope in his new school. A humorous story of a perfectly ghastly school! Everything is horrid here from Chef Gretta’s cooking to Master Mynus’ math class. The worst is Principal Perverse. However, Ferg manages to make four incredible friends and they learn to survive in school.

Young Lit | Horrid High (Mint Lounge)

In a simpler world, bad teachers would be called out for what they are and punished. It’s a compelling idea and one that is at the centre of Payal Kapadia’s Horrid High, for readers aged 10 and above.

Ferg Gottin, Phil Fingersmith, Fermina Filch, Mesmer Martin and Immy Tate are students at the Horrid High school for orphaned and unwanted children. The pre-teens have a crisis on their hands when their school principal decides to organize a party for horrid educators. The five put together their...

Hindustan Times on Horrid High

A story about young Ferg Gottin, the neglected child of two narcissists who is sent off to a school dedicated to making its students miserable, Horrid High by Payal Kapadia is meant for children under 11, but, may well become one of the children’s books that transcends age groups and is popular with all – young and old.

Wewouldn’t go so far as to call Kapadia our desi JK Rowling, but the influence of the child authors such as the Harry Potter creator, Dahl is unmistakable.

Flip a couple of page...

An interview with the talented Roger Dahl, illustrator of Wisha Wozzariter

Earning a living as a cartoonist may be the stuff that childhood dreams are made of, but they seldom turn into reality. Roger Dahl is one of the fortunate few who have made the grade, and it all started in Tokyo. For over 20 years the versatile Dahl has been making Japan Times readers both think and smile, as the mind behind not only the Opinion Page political cartoons but also the “Zero Gravity” comic strip, which pokes gentle fun at the foreign experience in this country.

“Zero Gravity” feat...

Goodbooks.in

Say the title of the book aloud and you have the gist of the story already. Wisha Wozzariter is a slim book that outlines the entire creative process of writing a story for young wannabe writers and those with an overload of imagination. The great thing about this book is that it does this without making it sound boring or instructional.

Wisha is a ten-year-old who ‘wishes’ she could be a writer but never really does anything about it. A Bookworm emerges from the midst of a book and shows her...
