Manic Monday Updates: blog and new projects

Happy Monday!! :D

A new look…

I want to warn everyone that I will changing my theme on the site. Why? I want my blog page to look more like a blog while the rest looks like a website. Can it be done without moving my blog to an external platform? I’m not sure. Hee hee.  I’m a host for a couple of blog tour companies and I need to advertise my guest a little better. I want readers to be aware of the current guest and well as upcoming guest.

So we’ll see what I can do with the site. If I have to move the blog, I’ll let everyone know. That option will force everyone to resubscribe to the blog post by email. That could be annoying, so I’ll try to keep from doing that.

New projects…

I’ve plotted, yes me the pantser, the first book in my Ashwood Falls series. Breifly, the series is about two shifter packs that coexist in a small mountain town in the Smokey Mountains that, at all costs, protects their secrets from the outside world.  I will post more information on the new series soon. The first book is Winter Eve and will be out in December 2012.

I will be starting rewrites on Death’s Storm, the second book in the Divinities series, soon. This is Khloe’s story. I have a blurb finished! But I’m waiting a bit before posting it and the cover. I want to give Forgotten Visions enough time to shine as the new release before I start teasing everyone on the next book. :)

Thanks for stopping by! For more Manic Monday Updates hop over to Carrie Ann Ryan’s, and Fated Desires’  blogs to see what new on their side of the internet.

Six Sentence Sunday: Forgotten Visions 7/15

Hi! Welcome to Six Sentence Sunday! I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. My six comes from the new release, FORGOTTEN VISIONS, the first book in the Divinities series. Enjoy!

Ayden Daniel had only been in Charlotte an hour before his cousin, Zach, called with a favor. No. Not quite a favor. A request that sounded more like a plea.

“You’re shittin’ me?”

“I’m afraid not. Charlotte PD said it was a hit and run.”

Thanks so much for stopping by. For more great six sentences hop over to sixsunday.com for the links.

Author interview with D’Ann Lindun

Happy Thursday! I am excited to have debut author D’Ann Lindun with me today. She is truly an inspiration with her dedication and passion for writing.

Welcome, D’Ann! Tell us about your book/series and how did the idea come to you?

I read an article about how a group was trying to block the removal of mustangs off the Apache-Sitgreave forest, and a story idea was sparked.

When did the writing bug first bite?

Twenty years ago, I took a how-to class from Superromance author Margot Early.  I was hooked!

Who are you favorite authors, book/series?

I love HQ Intrigues.  I love any suspense.  I’ve been discovering a lot of new, sharp authors from Six Sentence Sunday.

What is your most favorite childhood memory?

My dad brought home a little black pony for my 3rd birthday.  It’s etched in my memory.

Do you have any hobbies or special things you like to do in your spare time?

I like to trail ride with my daughter.  We take the horses and our five Australian shepherds to the mountains, roast hot dogs.  Nothing like it.

Any advice for new writers just starting out?

Don’t give up.  Don’t quit after a rejection.  I got over 200 before I got the call (email)!

Boxers, brief or commando?

Boxers

Favorite eye color?

I almost always write dark eyes on men.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve heard or seen?

LOL  I don’t know.  That list would be pretty long.  When I was 13, my dad and I were hauling horses and we broke down.  He sent me to town with a woman who stopped to help.  She had an old fashioned VW bug—full of live, loose chickens!!!

Wild Horses

Her family ranch outside of Payson, Arizona, is the last place Castaña Castillo thought she’d ever see again. But when her mustang activist brother goes missing, Castaña returns home to lead the search. Years of bad blood between local law enforcement and the Castillo men lead Castaña to believe the local cops won’t put out much effort to locate her brother. Especially since they think he murdered two federal wildlife agents.

Disgraced FBI agent Jake Breton needs to bring in Martin Castillo to redeem himself and resurrect his career. Falling in love with someone related to the suspect is the last thing he can afford to do. The last time he followed his heart, and not his head, it nearly cost him his life.

Danger, adventure, and death push Jake and Castaña together. Will they learn to trust each other and leave their pasts behind?

Excerpt

In less than half an hour, Castaña pulled into the ranch and killed the engine.  Even in twilight, it looked as if the place hadn’t changed much since the day she drove away six years ago. Blinking back tears of regret, she took in the familiar wood-hewn ranch house with its wide porch that offered shade even on the hottest day, the small barn and attached corrals. Farther, she saw horse pasture, and surrounding it all the Apache-Sitgreave National Forest. Up here, on the rim, it was forest, not desert.  A lump formed in her throat and she fought to swallow. The day after her eighteenth birthday, she’d packed up and set off for Dallas planning to never look back.

The last place she wanted to ever see again was this dusty old ranch that held very few happy memories and less opportunity. After a lifetime of being told she wasn’t good enough by her father, she was beginning to make something of herself as a horse trainer in Texas. Martin had been the only child her father wanted, or desired.  Men in the Castillo family didn’t rely on women for anything more than physical pleasure.

Wouldn’t Martin be horrified to know she was the one he depended on now?  But no matter how much he’d rejected her in the past, she couldn’t just leave her brother to die. Finding him safe and sound was all she asked. She knew better than to hope for acceptance from him.  A low moan to her right reminded her she had another headache. She shot a glance toward her passenger. He rested, half slumped against the door, eyes closed.

Jake.

About D’Ann

Falling in love with romance novels the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She was hooked! She began writing and never looked back. Romance appeals to her because there’s just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to have a happy ending.

D’Ann’s particular favorites usually feature cowboys and the women who love them. This is probably because she draws inspiration from the area where she lives, Western Colorado, her husband of twenty-nine years and their daughter. Composites of their small farm, herd of horses, five Australian shepherds, a Queensland heeler, eight ducks and cats of every shape and color often show up in her stories!

Guest blogger Sandy Wickersham talks about her new release, The Diamond Road

Thank you for having me on your blog today, Lia! The Diamond Road is an inspirational romantic suspense with an unexpected setting, occupation, and plot. I’ve been given some odd looks when I tell people where I got the inspiration for the book. Though women are a large part of the Ice Road Truckers TV show viewership, many women in my area aren’t fans or hadn’t even heard of it. The show is mesmerizingly addictive even after I learned that the danger was overblown the first season. There’s just something about men trying to out-drive each other in 50 below zero on ice that could crack under their truck at any moment that keeps people watching!

A year or two before the TV show premiered, I’d seen a special on the History channel about the pioneer of Yellowknife’s ice roads, John Denison, who started them in the 1950s, so my interest was piqued. The germ of the idea for the book didn’t happen until the show’s second season on the History Channel. I discussed it with my oldest son as we drove to a store one day. He said today’s young readers want lots of explosions and stuff. We collaborated on the main characters’ names based on one of his favorite TV shows, Jake and The Fatman. Connie Willams’s name came from Conrad Williams who was the Fatman, and Jake Baxter’s name came from the character Joe Penny played, Jake Styles.

My family thought I was weird as I recorded every episode of the second season of Ice Road Truckers and got all the first season when the History Channel repeated it, took copious notes, researched on the internet, and started the rough draft, making sure the female main character was a trucker. There’d been no women truckers the first year! Finally, I got to the point where I knew I needed some local flavor so I called people in Yellowknife and found a new friend in Faith Embleton of Embleton House Bed and Breakfast in Yellowknife. She set me straight on Yellowknife’s relationship with trucks, truckers, and the ice roads.

Between the calls to Canada, and the promotional items Faith and others sent me, I learned I had a massive re-plotting and rewriting to do, which led to the book’s final version. All the notes and took and episodes I recorded? Basically useless except for quick references to the gold and diamond mines names and distances from Yellowknife and setting my truckers’ personalities, from the bad guy to the good-hearted men who’d give their life for a fellow trucker.

I love the story and final version, but I learned one lesson other writers may need to hear; before you spend a lot of time drafting a book set in a country you’ve never visited, call local residents and get the facts so you don’t end up with a problem I just found in the book while looking for an excerpt, an error in distance between two buildings that are in the book constantly. It was one item I’d had wrong in early versions of the manuscript and when I was sick during the final edit, I missed correcting this important point in one paragraph. Now when Yellowknife residents read the book, they’ll think I didn’t do any research at all. I’d spent hundreds of hours researching but three days of illness at the wrong time blew it all.

I hope any beginning writers reading this will remember what I learned and remember to do better drafting and proofreading in the early stages because you never know what will happen a year or two down the road in the final editing.

Now for happier news, I’m holding my first contest for a free download of the book to a poster who best describes what your dream ice road trucker would be like. Since this an inspirational suspense, all answers must be G-rated.

BLURB:

Devoted to her family and God, American trucker Connie Williams decides to run the ice roads to earn money to pay her beloved father’s mounting bills as he fights kidney failure. Losing him will destroy her. Subconsciously, she feels inadequate because she never went to college like her siblings and still lives life like a teenager.

Canadian professor, rancher, and ice-road trucker Jake Baxter runs the ice roads for money to keep his ranch out of his greedy siblings’ hands. He clings to the ranch because it’s the only thing keeping his parents alive in his heart; their deaths are too fresh in his mind, too overwhelming. He blames God for his parents’ deaths and hates seeing any living creature die.

During Yellowknife, Canada’s ice roads, they will face two truckers fixated on murderous revenge. Connie and Jake and their friends have three short months to solve the mystery of who their attackers are and stop them, or die.

EXCERPT:

Jake faced Connie, a serious look in his eyes. “Did you know your dad turned me in for speeding my first year?”

“He didn’t tell us much about you. Here’s my load, 62,000 pounds of structural steel. How fast were you going?”

“About twenty-three miles an hour instead of fifteen. My first offense. I was in a downhill slide. Since I was so much over the speed limit, I was suspended off the ice for five days.”

She looked at him, puzzled. “If you were sliding, how was it your fault?”

“Officials figured out that I started down the hill faster than I should have and picked up speed as I slid. Pure rookie inexperience.”

She asked, “No one considered that?” as she checked the steel’s placement on the trailer.

“Not much. The result of speed, intentional or not, can be what happened to that speeder and his victim.”

“Do you resent my dad? You could have made over $8,000 those five days.”

He came to her and pinned her with his ice-gray gaze. She could see sincerity lurking there. “Not at all. He passed loads to other drivers to show me how to go down hills properly. He didn’t have to do that.”

“The land is flat in Alberta, so you couldn’t have had much experience on hills. Let’s find your load.”

Two trailers down, they found his load, eight black mining-truck tires.

“How much do they weigh?” Connie asked, staring dumbfounded at their sheer size.

Jake laughed. “They’re twenty-five tons of black rubber worth $144,000.”

“I’ve never seen such monstrosities!” she said, walking around the trailer with Jake, her eyes aglow. “They must be at least twelve feet across and five feet thick.”

“You should see the machines they belong on. They’re bigger than houses.” His eyes gleamed like a kid in a candy store as he described the trucks and worked to add straps to the chains already on the tires.

She was as enthusiastic as Jake, and said, “I want to see them when we get up there.”

“You probably will. Let’s go strap down your load.”

When they arrived at her load, she said, “This will be a tricky haul. Looks to me like these pieces will shift all over the trailer as I drive.”

Jake couldn’t understand why Mrs. Garreck gave a rookie such a treacherous load. Maybe she wanted Connie to learn on the job. “A correct assessment. You never know what can happen. All you can do is stop frequently to tighten the straps and keep your speed down.” He winked at her and smiled.

She winked back. “That goes without saying.”

Jake moved closer. He could almost feel her in his arms. “After we hook up Betsy, I’ll help tighten the straps. Then we’ll check them before we leave the Meadows.”

“Thank you. Let me make them as tight as I can first. I can’t rely on others all the time.”

With Betsy hooked to the trailer minutes later, Jake inserted one end of each strap in a binder and threw the other end over the load to Connie. After putting her strap’s end in the matching binder on the trailer’s other side, she pushed down with all her weight on the long steel pipe she put on the binder’s handle.

Jake soon joined her. He watched her work and love filled his heart. He gave a silent prayer, the first in years, Dear Lord, please help me make her parents my in-laws. I feel like I’ve known her all my life. Keep us safe on the ice until I can convince her that I love her. “Let’s see how you did.” He walked the trailer’s length and tried to tighten each strap. “Only the last two were loose. The rest were very tight. You’re very strong for your size.”

Tasty Tuesday: Forgotten Visions part 1

Now what kind of hero do you think he could be.  I’m thinking policeman. Could also be a shifter of some kind. Wolf? Cat? Dragon?

One more day until FORGOTTEN VISIONS is release! Whoot! I’m so excited and nervous. Today’s teaser is the end of the first chapter, BUT it extends on both my blogs. The first part is below and the second part can be found on The Divinities blog. Enjoy!

Forgotten Visions, coming July 11 from Soul Mate Publishing!

The slam of a car door drew her attention to a new arrival. Maxville Deputy Sheriff Zach Manus emerged from his unmarked 2011 Camaro and stalked toward them. Deep sorrow and anger laced across his handsome features. His light-brown hair stood a little more on end than normal. He stopped in front of them, his frown deepening and his golden-brown eyes darkening.

Zach, along with most his family, was empathic. Kalissa didn’t need to tell him how she felt. A flicker of grief laced his face, then disappeared in a flash. He inhaled deeply as his facial features blanked—void of feeling. He put up his shields that blocked others’ emotions she assumed. Why hadn’t he slammed them into place before getting out of the car?

Testing our moods, she thought sourly at Khloe.

“Don’t do that twin thing with me.” Zach gave a forced smile.

“What twin thing?” she and Khloe asked at the same time, trying to look innocent. It was next to impossible while they stood there wrapped in a dark fog of grief.

His dark brows dipped downward as he shifted to look at Fire Rescue working to get the flattened top of the Benz open. Turning his head back in her direction, his eyes narrowed. “You’ve been arguing with them?”

She flicked her attention to him. Yeah, she’d argued. JSO had the most irritating and pig-headed officers. The Chief Detective hadn’t wanted any insight from her. Prejudiced bastard.

Zach was like a brother to them and Kalissa trusted him fully. Sometimes it was hard to remember that he had a serious, responsible side. Around family, he was playful and sarcastic. Tonight, there were no sheepish smiles or factitious remarks.

“They won’t talk to me! I tried to tell them this wasn’t an accident, but they dismissed me.” She hugged her waist, staring back at the crushed car. The emptiness growing by the moment. It had been pulled away from the tree and loaded onto a wrecker. “They shouldn’t have died,” she whispered. Divinities were believed to be the children of the gods, far more powerful than any mortal witch. They aged slower and healed faster. Words like immortality and demi-gods drifted in the whispers among many of the magickin.

Immortals. Kalissa snorted. If that were the case, her parents would had walked out of that car. Sorrow squeezed, tightening its grip on her heart. The man in her vision was responsible. No, not a man. A dark magical essence hung so thick in the air it choked her.

Excerpt:

Darian logged into his email account. An unusual message flashed in his inbox. Madame Eve with 1Night Stand. Why did that sound familiar?

A vague recollection of his daughter mentioning the dating service two weeks before came to mind and he growled. God, please tell me she didn’t. He skimmed through the email and snatched the phone from the desk.

“Hello, Father.” A sweet and cheerful female voice answered after one ring.

“Where are you?”

“Shopping. Is there a problem?”

“You know anything about why I would receive a message from 1Night Stand?” He tried to stay calm and not overreact. The email could be a mistake. Maybe Kat had nothing to do with it.

“Oh! She found a match so soon? That’s great. You’ll have fun.”

Fun? “Katrina, I didn’t request to be set up on a date. I can’t go meet a complete stranger and….” he scanned the email again. “…and spend the night with her?”

“Oh, Daddy, please. This is my gift to you. Now be the adult and have fun.” Her sweet tone did nothing to soothe his growing annoyance.

“Kat….”

“I’m sick of you moping around the mansion. You need a change in your life. Besides, when was the last time you had sex?”

Book Spotlight: Shadow of Deceit by Mal Olson

The Independence Day Blog Hop is still in full swing. I’m giving away a $10 Amazon GC and signed swag. Click here and following the rafflecopter instructions. Happy Hopping!

Can an FBI agent obsessed with redemption and a grieving widow desperate to clear her husband’s name learn to believe in love again?

Shannon Riedel faces down danger when a gunman breaks into her office claiming her dead husband swindled him. When FBI agent Tony Crazaniak arrives to investigate, sexual heat sizzles. The ex-Delta Force operative’s massive presence and dark eyes trigger an attraction the young widow finds unnerving.

When Crazaniak convinces Shannon she needs his protection, they partner to unearth secrets her husband left behind—secrets involving a Tanzanian mine that yields perfect blue diamonds coveted by dealers around the world—secrets connected to a terrorist leader Crazanaik has vowed to take down.

With danger surrounding them, two emotionally wounded souls bond, but can they put their demons to rest and trust in love? Can they survive long enough to find out?

Excerpt:

The gun Shannon came across at the bottom of a neatly folded stack of masculine attire on her bed shouldn’t have surprised her. She’d seen the agent’s Glock earlier.

Intrigued, she reached for the pistol, an object that seemed so out of place in her bedroom. As though she were familiar with handling firearms when she wasn’t, she wrapped her hand around the grip then jerked her head toward the bathroom door, conjuring up thriller fantasies.

But she didn’t have to conjure anything when she noticed a letter poking out of Crazaniak’s inside jacket pocket. Nor did she have to imagine the fact that the closet door stood slightly ajar. Her stomach clenched, a mix of anger and unease. Had the FBI agent been nosing through Tyler’s belongings?

Tit for tat—the urge to sneak a peak overwhelmed her. Her heartbeat ratcheted up as she shifted the gun to her left hand and reached for the letter.

At that instant, she sensed a presence behind her. Even as the sound of water pounded the walls of the tub enclosure, Shannon knew in her heart of hearts that six foot-plus of dripping wet, naked man stood not relaxing under the water jets, but hovering five heart-palpitating feet away.

“Want to toss me my clothes?” he asked.

Unwilling to face him, she remained quick-frozen like a pillar of ice.

“Tell me you weren’t snooping in my things,” he rumbled.

“Tell me you weren’t snooping in my closet.”

“ I wasn’t snooping.”

She eyed the edge of the letter. “I thought I’d treat your duds to some suds. You want to hang out in my robe for a few?”

“Not enough material there to cover my manly attributes. I’ll settle for day-old Jockeys, and what the hell were you doing with my pistol?”

“Nothing.” She almost turned around.

Her chest thumped. The thought of Crazaniak au natural not only spiked her pulse, it titillated her imagination. She waited for a chord of guilt to strum across her heart. It didn’t happen. Instead, discord fluttered low in her abdomen, and she sensed him moving closer.

Look! Twins! What would you do with twins? All kinds of naughty thoughts come to mind…

My teaser today is from my upcoming release, Forgotten Visions. Enjoy!

He smiled at her and said, “I was in town on personal business. Zach called and asked me to check on you.”

“Oh.” It was all she was able to say. She completely lost herself in Ayden’s baby blue eyes and the weird, erotic feelings he raised in her. Maybe his mood swings were contagious.
