My 50 Favorite Movies of All Time: #49-Bad Boys (1995) Will Smith

Yes, I know. Many people like the second movie more, but out of all the Michael Bay films, Bad Boys is not a fast moving so I can actually see and understand what is going on unlike his Transformers films. It's also very funny and I laugh every time I watch it. Plus, it made Will Smith a star even before Independence Day.

Quick Review-The Patience of a Dead Man by Michael Clark

#BookReview #ThePatienceOfADeadMan #bookreview #reviews #horrorbooks #paranormalbooks #paranormal #books

The Patience of a Dead Man by Michael Clark is not your run of the mill haunted house novel. While the paranormal elements of this book were very original the first third of the book was difficult to get through as I found dialogue and characters hard to relate to.
I really struggled with coming up with how to write this review because I am torn over the character development and the inability to relate to anyone involved within the beginning of this story. There is a lot of exposition behind the mentality of a recent divorcee and he is coming to terms with it. Normally this would not be an issue because all good characters have faults, but the amount of time given to the characters consistent griping about his ex-wife made it problematic to relate, or even like him. The dialogue between the main protagonist and the “love interest” is stunted and unrealistic.

However, once you pass this beginning portion of the novel it begins to pick up the pace and is a locomotive coming full steam ahead, turning up the heat as we experience major haunting in the house and around its perimeter. There is a lot of back story for what is happening thanks to some well-placed journals that just happen to appear when they are needed the most (gotta love a helpful ghost). Just to warn you readers, there are time jumps that happen, but they are separated out, so they are easy to follow. With these time jumps we learn important information to help avoid the malevolent spirit that is hell bent on getting revenge because it is as putrid, and vile, as it is sociopathic in its actions throughout as the mystery is kept under wraps until the unexpected end. There are some creepy events that happens to the characters, that made it hard to stop reading.

Clark has the imagination to create an unsettling story, but a simple, yet unsettling, moment towards the beginning would have made all the difference in making me care a bit more so I could get through internal dialogue and unrealistic banter between the two leads. It’s not a terrible start, but it could have been so much more.

Got a New 4K Box Set Today!

I had to do it. These are classics and I am too curious about the 4K transfer not to own it!

So far I have watched The Birds and the transfer on that one alone was fantastic. The vista shots across the bay were gorgeous. In this set up, the Psycho UHD does have the option to watch the original directors cut of the film, or the one most have seen on television and such. However, you don't have to buy the box set to get that version of Psycho, there is a standalone version.

I would highly recommend this as a buy if you are a collector of just a Hitchcock fan in general as it does come with the Blu-ray version.

Buy The Alfred Hitchcock Collection Here! https://amzn.to/2R90CEz (The price dropped today, so take advantage while you can!)

REVIEW: Nothing Can Hurt You by Nicola Maye Goldberg

Stories about the aftereffects of an event of any kind have always fascinated me. The ripples that a single action can have on people outside the immediate circle can be cruel and maybe even enlightening to others. The murder of college student Sara Morgan in 1997 causes such effects, and Nothing Can Hurt You by Nicola Maye Goldberg is an eye-opener to cause and affects others’ lives have and how an impact a single action can resonate differently between people.

Buy Nothing Can Hurt You on Amazon Today HERE!

I need to get off my chest. Can we please stop comparing every piece of fiction, or even non-fiction, concerning a dead girl, to Gone Girl? This story is nothing like it, so please don’t let the reviews portion on the book’s back cover, or even on the Amazon page fool you otherwise.

Following, and even preceding the murder of Sara Morgan, Goldberg takes us through time documenting several women and their involvement with it. The book spreads across the characters, looking into the investigation somehow and even the people associated with the murderer. What interested me the most about this debut novel wasn’t because it was a thriller, because it really isn’t in the traditional sense, and it wasn’t terrifying either. Psychological is the term I would describe it best as we dive into what these women do surrounding this event, the motivation. At times, the justification they have as they attempt to understand from all perspectives.

While Goldberg’s debut does deserve praise, it may be a bit hard to follow for some. By the time I got to the end of the book, I had found myself flipping through pages to make sure another person the author was referencing was one I had already read about before. Having each chapter’s title named after the author’s character she was focusing on helped put the pieces together, but I wish there were a table of contents to make referencing easier. That, or maybe I should have created a map to help know which person coincided with another. Fortunately, I believe I got the majority of it and knew the relationships in family terms.

I may be off the mark, but I took much of this book as telling the audience that not everything is just about the individual, and we need to take notice that others deal with shared dilemmas in different ways. Regardless of if we agree, we should try and understand. Nothing Can Hurt You is an excellent look into how other people view a single event, but it didn’t resonate with me as much as I wanted it. I’m not sure if the marketing behind it had me anticipating something different that makes me feel like this, but I do believe that if you go into this novel knowing more than the short reviews lead on, you will get something more out of this book.

For my review, I give Nothing Can Hurt You by Nicola Maye Goldberg a 3.5/5, but for Goodreads, it will be a 3 out of 5.

Solving Sophronia by Jennifer Moore, A Quick Review By Brandy Michelle

#BookReview #SolvingSophronia #jennymoore #mysterybooks #victorian #london

Solving Sophronia by Jennifer Moore is a dazzling tale that takes the reader deep into a Victorian Era London where Sherlock Holmes would feel at home. It is a mystery for the ages with some moxy to boot.

Purchase Solving Sophronia by clicking ,,HERE!

Lady Sophronia shows us how she finds her way in society and truly bucks the system proving that a woman can be more than a pretty face and arm candy for some man. She strikes out on her own against her family’s wishes and most of her own society when she goes to work at the newspaper writing for the society column. For Sophie, this is not her dream job but just a steppingstone toward a greater purpose and she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
I don’t want to give too much away since Moore’s creation take you on a journey, a magical one at that. I really enjoyed her spunk and no-nonsense attitude. She really gives everyone a run for their money, and I like that about her. She continually shows that just because she is a woman, she has much greater value and usefulness if they will just give her the chance to show it. In time they realize she is a valued member of the team and come to rely on her in many ways. She is clever and extremely intelligent; she really thinks outside the box in a way that the other characters find new and interesting. This kind of thinking helps them solve the mystery, but not without some tragedy and suspense along the way. Overall, Solving Sophronia is a story that was a fairly quick read that kept me entertained the entire time.

5/5 stars
