Trump’s summit meeting with evangelical leaders
Donald Trump met with some 1000 evangelical leaders at Trump Tower in New York City yesterday. He promised them that he would end the ban on politicking for tax-exempt organizations like churches. He also said that he would appoint anti-abortion Supreme Court justices. He also said that he would emphasize religious liberty, including allowing government employees to [Read More...]

California may require Christian schools to change their teachings
California is considering a bill that would remove the exemption for faith-based colleges and universities from state anti-discrimination laws when it comes to “sexual orientation, gender identity, and religion.” The measure has already passed the state senate and awaits action from the House. From Bonnie Pritchett, California Lawmaker: Christian Colleges Must Drop View of Gender, Sexuality [Read More...]

Bob Dylan has released a new album, Fallen Angels. (If you have Amazon Prime, you can listen to its various tracks for free.) This is another set of interpretations of Frank Sinatra-type standards like his previous album Shadows in the Night (also on Prime). Living among the tombs
Our pastor (and son-in-law) Ned Moerbe had an outstanding sermon last Sunday on the demoniac of the Gerasenes (Luke 8:26-39). It is a model of Christological, law & gospel Biblical exposition. Read a sample of what I mean after the jump. From Rev. Ned Moerbe, Luke 8:26-39; Proper 7C 2016: Luke tells us a [Read More...]

Final plots to stop Trump at the convention
Most of the Republican party establishment has reconciled itself to the fact that Donald Trump will be the party’s nominee. But as he keeps making embarrassing, unpresidential statements, racks up a record 70% unfavorable rating, and falls farther behind Hillary Clinton in the polls, some Republican operatives are thinking up last-ditch efforts to stop him [Read More...]

Olympics woes
The Olympic games in Brazil start in about seven weeks. The state government that includes Rio de Janeiro has declared a “financial disaster,” reportedly enabling the state to funnel funds to the troubled games. Rio is also at the center of the world’s Zika plague, causing many athletes to refuse to attend. Russia’s track teams have [Read More...]

The first day of summer and God’s promises
In our Bible class on Sunday, in which we studied the flood in Genesis, we read another one of those verses I never noticed before: “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). It isn’t just the rainbow but the ordering of [Read More...]

Pope says most married people aren’t really married
Roman Catholicism famously doesn’t believe in divorce. But it does believe in annulments, a procedure which determines that for one reason or another–immaturity, not knowing what they are getting into, etc.–a valid marriage never took place. The implication is that many couples who had a church wedding and a marriage license, who have had children [Read More...]

Trump’s worldview
I am astonished that Eric Metaxis, author of Bonhoeffer and heir to Chuck Colson’s Breakpoint, is actively promoting Donald Trump (see this and this). Metaxis is an expert on analysing underlying worldviews. After the jump, a discussion of Trump’s worldview. From Michel Gerson, The GOP is learning the hard way that character matters – [Read More...]

The end of the written word?
Facebook is predicting the end of the written word–at least on Facebook, which the head of the company in Europe says may well be all video in 5 years. Suggesting that reading and writing will be all but obsolete (though not completely), Nicol Mendelsohn said, “The best way to tell stories in this world, where [Read More...]
