Teal Pumpkin Project
“Every child should be able to experience the joy and tradition of trick-or-treating on Halloween. But kids with food allergies are often left out of the fun, since most candy is off limits.”
Sound familiar?
The first Halloween after a child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes can be particularly tough on both the child and her parents. The d-kid can’t just eat a bunch of candy with wild abandon. Kids on multiple daily injects (MDI) might have to get an extra injection if they are eating their...

{Thoughts on Thursday} September 2016
Each Thursday I am posing a type 1 diabetes-related question on Facebook. Leave a comment with your answers here and also click through to Facebook to see how others answered.
Do you participate in JDRF or ADA walks? Why or why not? My answer: We actually started doing our local ADA walk to support another family member with diabetes even before Q was diagnosed. Unfortunately the ADA no longer has a walk in our town and the nearest JDRF walk is quite a distance away.
My philosophy on walks an...

Do you religiously count/weigh/measure to get accurate carb counts or do you tend to SWAG? (SWAG = scientific wild ass guess)
My Answer: We are pretty good about counting, weighing, and measuring. I have a running list of carb counts for the fast food restaurants that we frequently go to so I don’t have to look it up ev...

What’s the one thing you know now that you wish you had known when your child was diagnosed? My answer: This is a hard one because there isn’t just one thing that I know now that I wish I had known then. Since Q was diagnosed so young we had to micromanage a lot, especially at dance classes and sports practices. I alway...
