Richard A. Petracca, a First Responder, was born in Rockville Centre on Long Island, New York in 1967. At the age of 6, he was found to have a loss of hearing that was corrected, but then developed into a stuttering problem. Doctors also found him to be dyslexic. This made learning to read and write a real challenge. After years of therapy and rehab, he was able to overcome the stuttering problem. His love of reading developed after he received a copy of the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. When he was 24, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard.
