Book Showcase: The Angel of Death

Release Day Special: Tied Desire by Megan Slayer

Do you need a special setting to write in or do you have a ceremony to get you in the mood? What does it look like?
Nope. I write whenever I can get the ten seconds to put pen to page or fingers to keyboard. Sometimes I listen to specific playlists to get in the mood. I’ve been on an Evans Blue kick. I also like to listen to the Avengers movie. I tend to write while the movie is playing so I’m not actually watching it. Just listening. I write while on the couch, on my bed, at my desk and wherever I can tote my notebook. J
Describe your feelings when you learnt that your first book was accepted for publication
Oh my goodness. I screamed. Jumped up and down. My heart raced and I about passed out. I couldn’t believe something I’d written was going to go out to the masses. Then I worried about what readers would say. It was exciting and scary as hell. But I keep putting stuff out because I can’t NOT write.
The nosy ones
How much of the real “you” is in your stories?
A lot of me is in my stories. I tend to write dark haired characters. As my alter ego, I wrote a character with blue hair...oddly enough like me. My characters tend to have a healthy dose of fear in them as well. They don’t like to let other people down and that’s very much me.
What’s the silliest error in a book you’ve submitted?
I’ve probably done sillier, but, “she took his face tot he back of her throat”
Yes, I subbed with tot he instead of to the and face instead of cock. Oy...
Favourite comfort food?
I don’t know that it’s a comfort food per regulations, but there’s a little place about twenty or so miles from where I live where they sell cheese and such that’s all home made. I could go there and get tons of the home made chocolates. That’s my comfort food – Grandpa’s Cheese Barn Chocolate.
A person you admire
My grandmother. She has dementia and Alzheimer’s, but she doesn’t let the diseases get her down. She might tell the same story fifteen times in the same visit, but she’s always chipper and happy. Always smiling. I’m not sure she understands what’s wrong with her, but she doesn’t let it get her down.
If you could ask any person in the world one question of your choice, who would it be and what would you ask them?
My grandmother on my mother’s side. I’d ask her why she made some of the decisions she made and why she never tried to meet us kids.

Flailing his hands and puffing out his cheeks, he made a sound between anger and despair. “How can you expect me to calm down now? Bloody hell, Colin, what were you thinking?” He frowned. “Were you thinking anything at all? How could you do this?”
“Gosh, Mikey, it really isn’t that big a deal,” I said, attempting to soothe him even though he was clearly beyond soothing.
“Not that big a deal? Get real, love. Maybe it’s not that unusual for you, Mr Half-Fucking-Demon, but it definitely is a fucking tremendous deal for me.”
“Can you stop shouting the D-word, please?” I grumbled through clenched teeth.
“There’s no one around,” he pointed out.
We were in the hall outside Ben’s private playroom in his club, Benedict’s Chambers, just minutes after Mikey had watched Ben fuck—and suck—me. It had all happened too fast for me to give Mikey a warning. In fact, I’d been more than a little surprised myself, despite knowing right from the moment I’d met Ben that it was only a matter of time until he would reveal his true nature. I was too much of a temptation for him not to.
I’d barely recovered from the sensations, the sheer overwhelming intensity of the act, when Mikey had fled from the room, his face distorted into a mask of horror. He’d never even closed his fly. Suddenly conscious of wearing nothing underneath the thin blanket I’d wrapped around my shoulders, I pulled it a bit tighter, then I cast an anxious glance up and down the deserted aisle before glaring at Mikey. “So? You didn’t check if we were alone, did you?”
He tilted his head, using the advantage of his height to look down on me. “So-fucking-what? The people who come here would hardly mind, would they?”
“I doubt that many of them know everything,” I replied, aware that he wasn’t referring to our lack of decent clothing. “A few of them, yes, but most think it’s just a place to enact some kinky fantasies.”
“‘Kinky fantasies’?” Mikey snorted. “I’ve never heard it called that before, and besides, it isn’t about that, right?”
“Oh, come on, you know what I’m trying to say.”
“What, that your new playmate abuses their deviousness for his own purposes?”
His aggression annoyed me. At the same time it turned me on. My man was gorgeous when he was mad, and arousal had tinted his cheeks a delicate shade of pink even before his fury had added the wild gleam in his eyes. I longed to take him to bed. The sex was bound to be spectacular with him in a mood like that, but sadly, I doubted that I’d succeed if I came on to him now.
The sound of approaching voices forced us into grave silence. I turned towards the wall and kept my face averted until two men had walked past us and disappeared around the corner farther down the hallway. They probably hadn’t heard Mikey’s comment, but I wasn’t keen on being recognised as it was.
“Look, sweetheart,” I said, aiming to sound calm and sensible. “It’s not like I haven’t told you about their existence, is it? And he really isn’t a bad guy, you know? He’s just… Uh, well, different. Special.”
Mikey stared at me with raised eyebrows. “‘Different’? ‘Special’? Good grief, Colin. He’s not an endangered species, he’s—”
“That’s exactly what he is,” I snapped, not caring that my voice had turned into a vicious snarl. “And incidentally, so am I—probably even more so than he is.”
Glaring at me, Mikey took a deep breath, then he nodded slowly as he let the air out in a long sigh. “You knew what he was, didn’t you? When you started to go after him, I mean.”
“Yes.”

Please give us a short introduction about yourself
My name is Alp Mortal and I was born in 1965 on the Isle of Wight. I guess you could call me a dedicated self-publishing author; I call myself a story-teller with a passion for story-telling and sharing my stories. I’m writer of m/m gay romance and crime thrillers. I’m currently living in France, in the middle of nowhere, on the top of a mountain in the heart of a forest, growing my own food and generating my own clean energy, writing and self-publishing. I guess I’m trying to live the indie dream and attempting to honour all of life's gifts. I am a founding member of the charity "Maha Sukha", a charity that supports a monastery in Nepal. I donate all my US$ royalties to the monastery, with the aim to raise the money to build the classroom for the kids that live at the monastery and in the surrounding area.

What genre(s) do you write in and why?
I write m/m romances and crime thrillers. My gay romances are often very romantic, frequently poetic and sometimes epic. That said, I’ve just started a series based around brief encounters. The gay romance is, for me, the most exciting sub-genre and one in which male authors appear to be under-represented; I don’t write hard core or erotica as a rule, erotic yes, but not erotica. I don’t know why I write gay romances beyond wanting to depict the type of romantic story that I personally want to read myself. The romantic voice comes readily to my mind but then I am first and foremost a poet … and an incurable romantic!
I love crime thrillers. I especially enjoy intrigue and mystery. My primary vehicle is The Dog and The Eagle trilogy of which two parts have been published. The hero and heroine are both gay, as it happens. I had a lot of fun creating Hannah Smith, the only truly female character that I’ve created; she’s a bit of a ‘gal’ and probably more like me than Charlie Hargreaves, her sidekick. I write from the criminal’s point of view; much more interesting than the investigation side; it has a deeper well of motivation to draw on for me personally.
Tell us about your latest release
I am writing and publishing almost non-stop; it’s addictive. Recently I published the single volumes of all the gay romantic epics that had previously been published in three parts.
Those stories are:

· The Weaver and The Loom
· The Awakening
· The Shell and The Granite Pearl
· Brave
Do you need a special setting to write in or do you have a ceremony to get you in the mood? What does it look like?
I write at the kitchen table; writing is food; where better!? Make coffee, light cigarette, open laptop; thereafter the Universe could end I wouldn’t know about it.
Describe your feelings when you learnt that your first book had appeared on the shelf
That was on 3rd January 2013. I cried and threw up. 71 books later and I still cry but don’t throw up as much.
Has the release of your first book changed anything in your personal life? If so, what?
Yes, I’ve met such wonderful people through the process, people like Liz Winters and Hollie Bowrie. It has also made me appreciate my gift more fully. Words ignite thoughts, feelings, emotions, reactions and inspire the creative process. The feedback I have had has been wonderful; it encourages me to try to write better stories. I also think of myself as an author; it makes answering the question easier when you come to occupation on an application form!
Where do you find inspiration?
Everywhere and everything can and has inspired a story, from my own past to silly comments people make or things that I see, from a near death experience to dialling the wrong telephone number; all comes within the sphere of potential material.
Who is your favourite character and why?
Dane Danois, the hero of The Great Dane Saga; he’s the most fabulous gay man in the Universe and the person who I would most want to be.
A favourite line from one of your books “I love you”
Your favourite drink and food when writing
Coffee and cigarettes; I forget to eat when I’m writing; I forget to do most things.
The nosy ones
How much of the real “you” is in your stories?
From a molecule to a kilo; just depends but there is always something.
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? Who was it?
Edward Cullen.
Who is your least favourite of the characters you’ve written? Why?
By design, Ben in Juxtaposition, he’s the root of all evil, I hate writing ugly, but he had to be ugly, he’s a beautiful man but rotten; it jars the nerves and causes me nightmares.
The steamiest scene from your books
Maybe not the steamiest but for me the one most likely to ignite the taper is the first time between Alfie and Pol in A Life Long Love. The entire love story between Archie and Nathan in Brave takes the wallpaper off the walls.
Favourite comfort food?
Chocolate!
