Drip Drop Teardrop Book Review

Picture Author- Samantha Young

My Rating- 4 STARS

Synopsis- Avery hasn’t had it easy. When she was ten years old her parents died in a car crash. Now nine years later her Aunt Caroline is the only family she has left. And Caroline is dying. So when Death comes knocking (quite literally) in the form of the damaged and
dangerous, Brennus, Avery makes a deal with the reaper in order to save Caroline.

Brennus is an Ankou. One of the many, once mortal men
and women, who were given the choice to become an immortal in exchange for ferrying the dead over into their afterlife. Nine years ago Brennus took Avery’s parents and tried to take Avery, but she fought him and won. Amazed by her strength Brennus followed Avery and has watched over her. Now he knows Avery is the one to offer him freedom from his obligation to the dead. And he’ll stop at nothing to have her.

My Review- I really enjoyed this short story. I can't say it was as good as the Fire Spirits series. I think the writing was far better in her series, but I couldn't help being sucked in to Drip Drop Teardrop.

As always Samantha Young captures romance and love wonderfully. She develops her characters beautifully, offering us a bit of back story and what events have made them the way they are. Brennus is far from being cheesy or who we would ever consider as good boyfriend material for our daughters, sisters or friends but he is fiercly passionate and will stop at nothing to have Avery, even if it means blackmailing her a little. Despite his darkness and ruthless side, you see a great deal of kindness, loyalty and decency within him. He has made bad and good choices as we all do. I like characters who are not perfect. Brennus felt very real to me as we can all be a little selfish at times.

I didnt connect with Avery until a little later on in this book, though she had lost so much in her short years of life and the one person she had left in the world was dying. She was a little shallow and cared too much about what those around her thought, but of course we were meant to think that about her. Even she had to come to terms with the fact that she was judging Brennus' beauty on the hideous scar on his face. Her friends were just as
shallow. Once Avery learned to see past the scaring, I liked her a little bit more.

I find with short stories that I miss them the moment I finish reading! I needed this to be longer, I wanted it to take longer for the romance to blossom. I wanted to learn more about the characters. Still the length of this story does not take away from how great it was, how well paced the plot was and it just strengthened my love for Samantha Young's books and writing style.

Another great read!

Chapter 1

Silently, I moved through the dark sidelines of the club, barely noticed by the crowds of people who danced long in to the night. Scented skin, rich perfume and the undertone of wine drifted on the air. I breathed it in, drinking in sexual desires, glimpsing dark fantasies and shivered against them, wanting them.

How I envied them. Envied the way they moved; chins held high, exuding confidence, certain nothing
terrible could ever happen. I envied the way they laughed, the way they embraced, the way they trusted.

Women, in short dresses, tight skirts and low tops, encouraged men to watch, to whistle, to pant with
need. Never wondering, never caring that maybe, just maybe, the one they beckoned with those salacious smiles and inviting eyes could be the one who took everything from them, who could end their lives.

They were ignorant. Oblivious to what lurked in the shadows, oblivious to the monsters that waited
for them in the murky darkness. They were oblivious to me.

Yet it was I who would give up everything to be like them. I would give up everything to fall in love, to dance with a man and not fear his intentions, to laugh carelessly, to…to be human! Instead I was forced to walk the edges of this world, to look in, but never be a part of it.

Turning away from the dancing throng, I followed the unlit seating area and pressed against the countertop of the bar, gripping the solid wood to steady myself. I ordered a drink and gulped it down in seconds, relishing in the warmth of the Brandy as it spread through my body and soothed my nerves. For a moment it chased away the fears.

People frequented clubs like Pandora to drink their life’s problems away, to forget their responsibilities
for a night. Why should I be any different? Well…sure mine were the kind of problems no human could even imagine comprehending, but I still had problems. Ones that, like any other, would be waiting for me in the morning, but for now I was here, among those who were here for the same reason.

To forget.

I called the Barman over to fill my glass and knocked it back, exhaling sharply as it burned the back of my throat. It instantly sent my head swirling with calming cloudiness.

Pushing away from the counter, I moved through the multitudes of intoxicated people and stepped on to the dance floor at the centre, joining a horde of heated bodies writhing against one another in the tiny space. They smelled of sweat, of trepidation and excitement. I closed my eyes and inhaled. It was a heady mixture, one to get drunk on. Blood tasted like chocolate on the tip of my tongue. Flicking it over my pulsing lips with my tongue, I allowed my body to sway to the beat of the music. Throwing back my head, the vibrations of the speakers poured over me like syrup, perspiration clung to my skin, dampening my hair. I was a kitten surrounded by catnip. Human bodies intoxicated me, their proximity called to the part of me I kept hidden. A darkness. A monster.

Before realizing it, power spilled from my body in scorching waves, calling to those closest to me.
Reaching hands found their way on to my body, caressing. Men and women pressed against me hungrily as the music consumed Pandora. They touched me, they wanted me. Lips brushed against mine. Teeth scraped my throat. An arm curved around my waist.

The thing residing inside of me, the thing that gave me this unwanted power poured in to my consciousness and took control. It chose its victim. It chose a man who cupped my chin and pulled me close to bite at my lips, who snuggled against me as if he could crawl inside of me. The darkness wanted him. I wanted him. I almost…almost…let my demon have him. I could. He would not care. He would beg me to take him, to ride his body until he screamed in pain. He wanted me to tear at his throat, to drink down his blood. He wanted me to rip the flesh from his bones as he cried out in pleasure and pain. He wanted this as much as I did.

I felt my teeth sink in to his lip, felt the soft skin split and a drop of blood slipped in to my mouth,
the metallic sweetness called a moan from my throat.

I froze.

Shock and disgust pulled me from this hypnotic state. I called my power in so quickly I staggered back with the force of it. I stumbled away from the man, his eyes confused, but not afraid. Thank God he was not afraid. The others had moved away, unaware of being under my spell. I backed away from the dance floor and sagged against the bar, taking deep, ragged breaths. I gulped down glasses of brandy, trying desperately to fight the memory of the man’s body against mine, his blood in my mouth.

“You might want to slow down a bit, miss.”

My head snapped up, meeting the dark chocolate eyes of the young Barman who filled my glass with another shot despite his warning. He smiled apologetically and I followed the movement with my eyes, admiring the way his lips twitched at the corners of his mouth, the way the dimple deepened in his left cheek.

"Miss?”

His mouth moved deliciously when he spoke.

“Maybe I should call you a taxi?”

I frowned up at him, head swimming with alcohol. “What?”

I cringed at my throaty voice, the musical sound of it, the way it softened the young man’s eyes.

“I think you have had enough for one night,” he said. “Where do you live?”

“Live?”

The Barman grinned and his looks became boyishly handsome. His unblemished skin was naturally tanned, his blonde hair sprinkled with golden highlights.

“Let’s start slowly. What is your name?”

“My name?” I cursed inwardly at my befuddled brain. “Annette. Annette Anderson.”

“Good. I am Todd. Now let’s think about getting you a taxi home,” he said. “Can you remember where you live?”

I glanced up at him under dark, heavy eyelashes. “Yes.”

The Fallen Star (Fallen Star series #1)

Picture Author - Jessica Sorenson

My Rating- 3.5 stars

Synopsis- For eighteen year-old Gemma, life has never been normal. Up until recently, she has been incapable of feeling emotion. And when she's around Alex, the gorgeous new guy at school, she can feel electricity that makes her skin buzz. Not to mention the monsters that haunt her nightmares have crossed over into real-life. But with Alex seeming to hate her and secrets popping up everywhere, Gemma's life is turning into a chaotic mess. Things that shouldn't be real suddenly seem to exist. And as her world falls apart, figuring out the secrets of her past becomes a matter of life and death.

My Review- I rated this 3.5 stars as I more than liked it...but...

And its a big BUT.....

The first 50% of this is quite slow moving, a little infuriating at times and very similar to other books I had read. I think if you have never read Twilight before then this will be a little more enjoyable for the reader as many points in the first half are very Twilight-esque...not a bad thing to be compared to those books as I enjoyed them very much I just dont think it was done as well as Steph Meyer.

Now from 50% onwards I admit I found myself enjoying the story, though there are a few plot holes and some continuity errors, but these are very minor and I could ignore them for the most part. The Fallen Star is full of great ideas that I would have loved to see bloom in to something great...it just didnt quite become great for me. The whole power of a fallen star inside a human is damn cool, along with touching on some of her powers was again cool and the baddies wanting that power...again...cool. It just never quite made it because Gemma, the protagonist, is really well...whiny for most of the book, shows little confidence and trails after a very dominating, manipulative, lying love interest which to be honest, runs very hot and cold throughout the story...sometimes within the same paragraph and it was very hard to like either of them. Block out this and the story became enjoyable again.

Laylen is one of the few characters I really liked in this book, the soft hearted Vampire who hasnt been treated too well by the Keepers he once belonged to before turning...we dont learn much about how and why he got turned in to a vampire but I hope in future books we learn more about him. He was the only truthfully nice character and I enjoyed his scenes. His and Gemma's moments were very touching and revealed alot about the corruption within the Keeper's hierarchy.

Which brings us to the ending of the book. Unfortunately I had guessed very early on how it would end, who was bad, who was not, and I hope in some ways I am proven wrong in the next book and that it was just a great twist....but that cliffhanger was amazing!! and even if I wasnt too sure about this book, I will damn well read the next one, because no way can someone end a book on a cliffhanger like that and it be forgotten about!! So I look forward to reading The Underworld and hope
the writing comes to life in the second book where it didn't quite make it in Fallen Star.

The Nightmare Stone Book Review

Picture Author- Finian Black

My Rating- 4 Stars

Synopsis- The ultimate lucky break gives John Harris and his family the opportunity to fulfill their wildest dreams. But all dreams have a darker side, and John's past is never far away, ready to reach through to cast its shadow. One hundred years ago, their new home was the scene for strange events that cannot easily be explained. As John feels his past draw ever nearer, he knows that he must face up to his deepest fears if he is to prevent history repeating itself. And as the past and present collide, a force beyond his control or comprehension is looking for one, final battle.

My Review- I really enjoyed this book. In honesty, I didnt think I was going to. Its not my usual type as I sway more to Epic Fantasy, YA/Urban and Paranormal. I was worried that it would not hold my
attention while it set the scene and introduced us to the characters, but I am so glad I chose to keep reading because this book grabbed me and held me and took me on a wild ride of suspense and creepy shudders.

In the first section Finian Black introduces us to John and his family. John, after a compulsion leads him to buy an extra line on the lottery with numbers he is not too sure why he picked, wins the jackpot and he and his family buy an old grand house that isnt all it seems. We are led to believe there is something very wrong going on and the old previous ownder is mysterious and secretive. John suffers headaches and feels something within the house that leads him to learn more about its history. The old woman presents him with photos and a journal, along with a warning not to move the stone statue in the garden.

This brings us to the middle section, taking us back to a time when a young family lived in the house long before John and the old woman. This section I enjoyed the most. It revealed many secrets about the house and weaved a tale about a being named The Boy who steals away children and leads them to a magical land...and their deaths! I loved reading the story of mary and how she comes to be close friends with the rich childen she used to work for in the grand house. Her budding romance with James kept me interested.

The last section of the book is where things really get intense. The Boy is back and he wants revenge. The last scenes are set in the middle of a terrible storm. Finian Black is fantastic at creating suspense and keeping us on the edge of our seats. I didnt know how it was going to end....and when it did I was shocked! In my opinion this book deserves no less than a 4 star rating/review. Even if a reader does not enjoy the story the plot alone is worth it. Not to mention its finely edited, well structured and managed to move us through the past and present without confusion. I really liked this book and I look forward to reading more from Black.

Oh...and if you like Disney and fairytales? prepare to have a new fear for them. The Boy is a magical being we have known since we were children!

Ocean of Dust Book Review

Picture Author- Graeme Ing

My Rating- 5 Stars

Synopsis-  Fourteen-year old Lissa is snatched from her home and finds herself a slave on a trading ship traveling on a waterless ocean of nothing but gray dust. A feisty, curious and intelligent girl, her desire to explore the ship earns her the hatred of the cruel first officer, Farq.

Fascinated by the ocean of dust, Lissa becomes embroiled in its mysteries, sensing things that the crew cannot, while cryptic whispers in her head are leading her toward a destiny linked to the dust itself. Only one man aboard can help her make sense of her new talent, but can she trust him? All is not as it seems, and she must unravel the clues before it’s too late.

When a sinister plot casts her adrift on the barren ocean, her best friend is left in the hands of the treacherous crew. Everything hinges upon her courage, quick wits, and her ability to master her new talent

My Review- Trying to save a young rich boy from harm , Lissa is unexpectedly caught up in more trouble than she bargained for. Along with another boy, pete, they are sold as slaves on a ship sailing out on the magical and mysterious Ocean of Dust. she is soon sent to the galley to cook and serve the crew but her adventure does not end there. Hounded by the spiteful Alice, beaten by the crew and the Deck Master Farq, she struggles to find her feet. Not only does she have all that to contend with, the Dust Ocean makes her ill. Lissa must learn the secrets of the Dust Ocean if she is to find out why it makes her ill, why she can see colours where others cant and why the creatures who live in the ocean have taken an interest in her.

The Ocean of Dust is not only a great adventure but a tale of courage and friendship and discovery.
Lissa is a beautiful character to follow and from the very first page you are drawn to her. I connected with her on an emotional level. When she was hurt or miserable or happy, then so was I. Halfway through the book I found myself near tears at what she was put through at the nasty hands of Alice and Farq. With every battle she won, I literally cheered for her (gaining some very strange looks from my partner). The supporting characters developed Lissa's personality perfectly. She is fiercely protective of her friends and fights for them even while she is in grave danger. Branda is caring, Pete is humourous and even the cranky old Navigator and Cook brought the story to life.

I hated knowing that the story had to come to an end, and I hope for a sequel to this lovely story. To follow Lissa's adventures and discover new villains and friends with her is something I look forward to. Graeme Ing is a fantastic story teller and even though Ocean of Dust is aimed at a young audience I believe people of all ages can connect with this book and the characters in it. There is truly something for everyone! Whats next Mr Ing, please don't keep us waiting!

Borrowed Ember (Fire Spirits #3) Book Review

Picture Author - Samantha Young

My Rating- 5 Stars

Synopsis- Everything in Ari’s life until this point has been borrowed. Her human life with a man who wasn't her real
father.A love for a boy who needed more than her to be strong.
Kisses with a Jinn who refused to do anything but lend them out in moments of weakness. And even her resolve, which seemed to fail her whenever she needed it most.

But Ari is done borrowing. She finally feels strong enough to
make hunting Jinn not just a hobby to get her through her dismal situation, but to make hunting a permanent and necessary career.  Her friendship with Charlie might finally make it onto real and steady ground if only she can save him from the trial on Mount Qaf. And her love for Jai could be eternal, if only she could gain control over the darkness of the Seal within her.

Ari believes all of this is doable. That finally she will truly own the relationships in her life and to a certain extent have ownership over her future. But none of that matters when it isn't up to her…

…For high in the emerald mountains of Mount Qaf, the Sultan Azazil has been keeping secrets. Even from the Jinn Kings. Secrets that will change everything… and bring Ari to the crashing realization that once again…

… she’s borrowed something that will never truly belong to her. Something that is desperate to be
unleashed. Something that could destroy them all.

My Review- Borrowed Ember: As good as the first 2 books in the series and I am dreading reading the fourth as it is all coming to and end and I know that I will miss these books and these characters for a very long time after.

Ari is determined to be a hunter and not the weak prey she has been in the other books. She learns more about herself and what she is capable of, but like everything there is a light and a dark, a good and an evil and her powers are no different.

Having the power of the Seal of Solomon and the ability to command all Jinn comes with high prices and responibility and Ari tries her best not to use it unless she has to, but something dark inside her whispers in her head to take control of everyone, everything. This powerful voice comes when she feels threatened, when those around her are hurt and Ari must control it before it controls her.

Jai comes to life in this book as well. He admits his love for Ari, though it is hard for him as he was abused when he was younger, felt unloved by his father and beaten mercilessly by his family and tribe on many occasions, blamed for something his mother did. It has taken him a long time to accept his emotions and the author does it very well, showing us his anguish easing over time all because Ari loves him unconditionally. Charlie is still hell bent on his revenge and vows to kill the jinn who murdered his younger brother, even if it means pushing away those he loves and maybe getting killed in the process. This boy, who was once addicted to drugs, alcahol and easy girls is now addicted to the power of his magic. It consumes eveything, even though he thinks that Ari is his true love, he cant
seem to put her first and finds himself in a whole lot of trouble towards the end of this book. Even when he meets the new girl Fallon, who he grows to care about, he still cant seem to push away his addictions.

One of the little treasures in this book is the addition of Trey who was only touched upon in the other books. His loyalty to Jai is endearing, his own set of problems makes your heart ache for him. Being gay in his life is difficult, keeping the secret is becoming harder and it would kill his dad to find out. Trey, although we have not seen the world from his POV, is yet another character I care about in this
series.

The ending was fantastic and it keeps you needing more, wanting to know what will happen because the author has a great way of leaving nail biting cliff hangers and this one is no different!! I have to read the next book, I have to find out what happens to Charlie, Ari and Jai, even if it means the series is coming to an end...

Scorched Skies (Fire Spirits #2) Book Review

Picture Author- Samantha Young

My Rating- 5 Stars

Synopsis- The White King has crossed the line, sounded the horn, sent out the wolves.

When blood is shed and life is lost the reality of Ari’s position as both hunter and prey finally sets in. It seems her father will stop at nothing to force her will to his own and distracted by Charlie’s latest mistake and her seemingly misguided attraction to Jai, Ari never thought to fear anyone else but the Jinn King.

Blindsided and attacked, Ari learns a new wolf has joined the hunt. A dark sorcerer believes he knows a way to bleed the power of the Seal and wield it as his own, and he is even less patient than The White King.

The War for the Seal has only just begun… and it’s time for Ari to turn it on its head. It’s time for Ari to stop acting like the hunted. It’s time for Ari to become the hunter.

My Review- Yet another fantastic book I couldnt put down!

After reading Smokeless Fire I immediately bought the second in the series and read it within a day! On to the third very soon...

Ari has so much to cope with already. The loss of her only family, the loss of Charlie to his many addictions, loss of her friends and normal teenage life and it doesnt get any easier in Scorched Skies. Before I go on I have to say the titles to these books are great and the covers are beautiful. They were the first things to attract me to the series.

Ari is wanted by many of the Jinn for being the mythical Seal of Solomon, a magical weapon that can control good and evil Jinn. As well as her real father The White King and Azazil, she is also wanted
by some of the other kings. The Gleaming King's son is obsessed with power and Hell bent on capturing Ari and using her power for himself. Who ever has Ari has the power to control other Jinn and more.

Charlie has become obsessed with his new magical abilities as well as revenge on the Jinn who killed his little brother two years ago. Ari cant believe that, even though he says he loves her,he doesnt love her more than the idea of killing the Jinn. Jai tries to push her away even though his love for her is consuming. Ari hates that she is just a weak little girl to them and is determined to become the Hunter
instead of always being the Hunted.

This book, yet again, kept me rivited. I refused to put it down until the end and hated the thought of it
ending. Every book I read is one book closer to the end of the series. I love Ari's character so much. She doesnt always make the right choices, she is weak at times, strong at others but altogether she is caring and loving despite how she is treated. Jai, my favourite character, is tortured and abused and full of passion and love he tries to bury. The romance is steamy and always keeping you on the edge of your seat, Will they kiss now? Won't they? Damn why did their moment get interrupted!! its deliciously frustrating and I can't wait until Ari and Jai can finally be together, I even hope Charlie finds someone too.

Samantha Young has a great writing style and a great sense of her characters personalities and feelings. You can tell she understands them and knows them inside out. I hope Ari grows ever stronger and I truly hope her and Jai can be happy. I havent felt this excited for a series since I read the Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

Smokeless Fire (Fire Spirits #1) Book Review

Picture Author- Samantha Young

My Rating- 5 stars

Synopsis- When eighteen year old Ari Johnson is transported from her bedroom into the chilling realm of Mount Qaf - home to the terrifying and mercurial Jinn - she learns a truth that rocks her very world. Suddenly her anxiety over college and her broken friendship with Charlie seem like small change compared to the war she now finds herself stuck in the middle of. Her unease isn’t lessened any by the hot guardian, Jai, who won’t stop following her around everywhere - a Jinn whose loyalty Ari hates to question but must. She has no idea who she can trust.

When the truth burns through her life in its determination to turn
it to ashes, Ari will have to battle with ancient deadly creatures, epic family drama and heart-wrenching romantic entanglements.

My Review- The book starts off by introducing Ari and her friends and the teenage drama surrounding every day life...with a tiny twist. Her old best friend has been blaming himself for his little brothers death and has fallen in to a black pit of drinking, drugs and sex with easy young girls. Ari is absolutely devastated at what this is doing to him and, with her love for him, she vows to bring him back from the edge before it is too late.

Already a great plot/story right?

Add another guy, Jai, a sexy, brooding Jinn with a hot body, compassionate personality and great skills with magic and combat. Jai, though Ari doesnt understand why, becomes her guardian to protect her from the other Jinn and those who would try to harm her...because our Ari has a deeper secret that even she is unaware of! He confuses her, intrigues her and leaves her baffled by her new feelings for a boy who isnt Charlie.

I picked up this book and refused to put it down until 2 am in the morning, even knowing I had to be up early for work the next morning (boy did I pay for that-but it was totally worth it!)

The characters are fantastically written, as well as the plot lines and the sub plots and the twists and turns, the backstabbing and betrayal, the double crossing and cruelty. It all kept me rivited to my kindle for hours and hours and hours. Ari is beautiful and brave and caring and strong. Charlie, though we are led to think of him as a bit of a loser, definately tugs on the heart strings when his troubles are revealed, though we are kept guessing all the way through about his intentions when he suddenly snaps out of his downer. And then there is Jai, my favourite character in the book and one I could not stop drooling over. He is a dark, brooding male with a troubled past, a father he hates and brothers who are...well...knobs. But underneath that he is strong and passionate and, my personal opinion, more on Ari's level than Charlie could ever hope to be.

The story is paced well, keeping you in suspense but allowing humour to seep in and relieve the tension every so often. I connected with Ari from the very begining and literally bit my lip every time she was in danger, hoping Jai would come to the rescue....but Ari is no damsel she has her own set of
skills...powerful ones.

Then came the ending! A great cliffhanger and lots more about the characters to explore. I have a feeling this trilogy is going to leave you guessing until the very end. It is going to be full of ups and downs and twists and turns and I am going to love each one...In fact, the moment I finished this book, i bought the second.

This is a must read for everyone and anyone!
