1. Watch TV: No, really, and I don’t just mean popular sitcoms. Scroll through the channels
and watch one you wouldn’t normally. Take in a documentary on the History Channel, or a
reality-type show on Animal Planet. There are lots of biographies on A&E, ourdoorsy and even
international flavors on HGTV and there’s always classic horror on Chiller. You never know
where inspiration will come from, but watching a variety of shows will often spark new ideas.

2. Write it down: Keep paper everywhere so a good idea never gets forgotten. Mini-composition
books are cheap, so keep them everywhere—your purse, your car, your desk, your back pocket,
in the bathroom (you think I’m kidding, but how many good ideas come to you in the shower?
Uh-huh). It sounds hokey, but keep paper and a pencil on your nightstand and in the morning,
write down what you remember from your dreams. Your subconscious is trying to tell you
something. Make sure you’re listening.

3. Find a critique partner/group: The line, “I am a rock, I am an island,” only works in a
Simon and Garfunkel song, not in writing. Everyone can benefit from finding a trustworthy
writing partner or critique group. I’ll admit, it’s often difficult to find one that fits what you need
and meets regularly, but it’s so worth the effort. They’re the men and women who will not only
point out your comma mistakes, correct your inconsistencies and suggest brilliant plot twists, but
they’re the ones who’ll have your back when you get that awful rejection letter and give you a
swift kick in the pants when you’re ready to hang it up. Then, they’re the ones who’ll appear on
the acknowledgments page when you finally achieve your dream and get published.

4. Read, read, read: Read inside your genre, read outside your genre, read books on improving
your writing craft, read nonfiction, read biographies, read pop culture magazines, and read
others’ works in progress. All of these spark ideas, keep creativity flowing, and help you gauge
your own writing. When you think you’ve read enough, pick up the classics and start again.

5. Live your life: Okay, so I’ve recommended watching TV, writing down your thoughts, and
reading everything you can get your hands on. Take that with a grain of salt because there’s no
substitute for actually getting out and living your life. Nothing you watch or read can replace
having first-hand experiences. We always see the stereotypical image of a writer bent over his or
her desk, hidden away from the rest of the world, furiously typing or scribbling away. It doesn’t
really work that way. In small increments, yeah, but as a way of life? Not so much. So get out
there, have fun, and then tell us all about it in your next book.

     Austin pushes the red and black Jet Ski into the water, past the first few crashing waves, then throws a leg over the side. He turns to me, extending an upturned palm, but as I watch thewater pound against his legs, I slowly shake my head and inch away. Forget the confusion of the past few minutes or my concern if riding wrapped around Austin is appropriate…are jet skis even safe? So far, my experience with modern machines has taught me that they travel at terrifying speeds. What if I were to accidently let go and fly off? I don’t know how to swim!

     With my legs straddling the seat, my arms wrapped tightly around Austin’s firm stomach, and my chest and face pressed against his back, I do not need the extra layer my wetsuit provides. I am quite warm without it. Under me, the engine rumbles. Austin grabs my clasped hands, ensuring my death grip. And then we are flying.
     Fear is left behind me on the beach. My laughter is swallowed by the wind. And I hold onto Austin. The rest of the world falls away as he powers the machine forward. Whistling sound envelops us yet there’s also silence in the midst of the roar. Out here, there’s no room for worrisome thoughts about the future or about the past. No time for  concerns over when I will return or how much I miss my family. In this bubble of Austin, wind, and water, all I can do is live and breathe and smile.
     Austin spins us in circles and then we fly straight ahead, free as the winged creatures
overhead. He bounces us over a swell and a spray of water splashes my face, tickling the skin left exposed from my wetsuit. I squeal, and under my clasped hands, I feel his taut stomach muscles shake with laughter. Then he takes off again in another sharp turn, racing in the opposite direction of which we came. Excitement has me screaming, asking him to go faster. I close my eyes against the sting of the salty air and the lash of my hair and tilt my head back, feeling more uninhibited than I ever have before.

My sweet author friend Nichole Chase has put together a fundraiser for a family who unexpectedly lost their husband/father in a motorcycle accident. Needing to do something to help the family. On the night of February 10th, 2013, Matthew Corn passed away in a tragic accident. It’s impossible to sum up the life and vibrant personality of one person in a few short sentences. To say Matt will be missed is an understatement of gross proportions. He was a loving husband and devoted father, quick to give his family everything they needed and more. Matt moved from Pittsburgh to Savannah with his wife, Daniele, to work at Gulfstream. Here they had three children: Ben, 5, Andrew, 2, and Lily, 1. Mini-Reviews: Bliss line by Entangled Publishing*

Howdy folks! It's been a while since I did a book review so this time you get a three-fer. The Bliss line at Entangled is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Using typical romance tropes, the stories
are sweet, fun and at less than 200 pages each, a quick read.  

Melody Mires has sworn off dating musicians, but when the sexy European conductor Wolf Braun takes over her struggling symphony, her hesitation almost flies out the window with the notes of her flute—until he opens his mouth. Wolf is arrogant, haughty, and seems to have a personal vendetta against Melody. Oh, and he’s her boss. If she wants to keep her job as principal flutist, she’ll have to impress Wolf while simultaneously keeping her undeniable attraction to herself.
Wolf came to America to get as far away from his past as possible, and to recover some of the swagger he had as one of the world’s best maestros. He never imagined being forced to reassess the entire orchestra’s talent—and potentially fire anyone who doesn’t make his cut. Dating the attractive flutist is out of the question, but as their feelings reach a fever pitch, can they risk both
their careers for a chance at love?

After another wretched date with a stuck on himself musician, Melody vows never again, no matter how attractive her new boss is, especially since conductors are on a whole other category of vain. Wolf has no interest in dating either, especially someone who bears a striking resemblence to to his con of an ex. The unique setting of an orchestra, with a jerk of a violinist trying to sabotage said orchestra, charming secondary characters, and some unexpected twists made this a very enjoyable, sweet read. As a lover of music, I recommend.

 Speech teacher and successful matchmaker Mackenzie Simms decides to find a woman for her friend, handsome newspaper tycoon Rick Duffy. Though they’ve been each other’s go-to dates for the past month, Mac and Rick couldn’t be more different: she is outspoken, sarcastic, and completely loathes his privileged lifestyle. He’s laid-back, unassuming, and seems comfortable at an upper-class charity function. So why can’t she stop thinking about him?
Rick knows he and the opinionated-though-adorable Mackenzie are better off as friends, so he agrees to the double-date getaway Mac plans at his family cabin. But seeing Mac cuddle up with her “friendly” date rankles Rick beyond reason, and Mac regrets her matchmaking scheme the minute she sees the way her beauty-queen cousin looks at Rick. Can Mac ‘fess up to what’s really in her heart, when speaking her mind puts everything at risk?

Mac and Rick start out as each others' plus ones for various affairs. They only know each other superficially but there is a definite spark between the two. A spark that Mac does her best to ignore as she wants no part of any relationship, but especially one with a Duffy. After an unfortunate confrontation at an event, and to distance herself from her attraction to Rick, Mac decides to replace herself as his plus one with her cousin. Throw in a double-date weekend gone horribly awry, lots of miscommunication, some good, old-fashioned grass-roots activism and you have a fun, entertaining, and satisfying read.

Danielle and Wes have been best friends since college, so when Wes needs a date for his sister’s wedding and Dani needs a partner for her company’s retreat, they devise the perfect plan: a fake engagement to get through both events unscathed. Adrenaline-junkie Wes can prove to both his ex and his family that he’s well and truly moved on, and serious-minded Dani can prove to her boss that she’s worthy of the promotion he seems to only want to give to a family-oriented employee.
But amid the fake swoons, fake kisses, and forced proximity, neither expects the very real feelings that develop. There’s nothing more dangerous than falling for your best friend…but what if the landing is worth the fall?

Falling for Her Fiance follows the typical formula for books of this trope, with notable exception. Madsen is able to keep the tension of will they/won't they throughout the novel and make it believable to the point where I wondered if the MCs WOULD get their HEA. Tired of being singled out for being well, single, best friends Dani and Wes pose as each other's significant others. The banter between Dani and Wes is fantastic and I found myself laughing out loud more than once. A quick and easy read, Falling for Her Fiance was a fun, light-hearted read that was very enjoyable. Bet ya' five buck you'll like it.
