Harpers Bazaar are running a short story competition. You have up to 2,500 words to write on the theme of 'Liberty'. As usual, for the competitions I mention on this blog, it's free to enter. The prize is publication in the magazine and a couple of nights in a very nice looking hotel in the Yorkshire Dales.

It was foggy when we drove over the Dales, so I don't have photos – but here's a castle... Read more of this blog post »

In places this is slow and hard going, but in others the characters are so well drawn, the descriptions so gorgeous and the story so engaging that this is forgiven.

I'm an Agatha Christie fan and thought this might be in a similar style. It is and I enjoyed it just as much as any of hers.

What there is of this story is pretty good, but it isn't a complete novel. The story starts with the main character wanting to discover what happened to her father and the blurb gives this as the premise, but that issue is in no way resolved.
