The Musicians You Should Add To Your Playlists This Year

It's another year, Candy Girls. That means we have another year to learn new things, watch new TV shows and movies, and of course, listen to new artists! Which is why we've rounded up 9 new artists you need to put on your playlists this year. Scroll down below to get to know each of them better, and make sure to listen to their music via YouTube, Spotify, or Soundcloud.

Oh, Flamingo!

Genre: Indie rock

Listen to Oh, Flamingo when you need a dose of good vibrations even if and especially when things just don't seem to go your way. Their songs are quirky, fun, and full of happy vibrations that will make anyone's day.

Rusty Machines

Genre: Indie rock

If you're looking for the kind of music that can keep you company during those days when you just want to stay in your bedroom alone, then you should put Rusty Machines' songs on loop. Their easy sound will instantly transport you to those blissful city nights on rooftop buildings when you just want to lie on your back and stare at the clear night sky.

Sud

Genre: Indie rock

There's always a part of us that needs music that will make us feel nostalgic about things. For that, we have songs from the band Sud for you. Their kind of music is perfect for when you're conflicted on whether you need a good cry, you need to let go, or you just need to be left alone with your thoughts.

Miles Experience

Genre: Fusion

Suave and conflicted may be the first words that you'll think of once you start playing to Miles Experience's songs "Love Supreme" and "Silakbo." Theirs are the type of songs you can play over and over again when you just need to clear your head from everything.

Charlie Puth

Genre: Pop, R&B

You may recognize him as the voice singing the sad song "See You Again" with Wiz Khalifa, but Charlie is slowly putting his own music out there. Listen to him when you're in need of songs to sing to while while

Courtney Barnett

Genre: Indie rock

You know that moment when you finally know you're ready to move on and let go of whatever it is that's dragging you down? Yup, those moments need Courtney's songs in them. The Australian singer's songs will make you want to just rock it out.

James Bay

Genre: Indie rock

The title of James Bay's debut album perfectly sums up his kind of music: for chaos and calm—perfect for those moments when you're in a chaotic, calm, or an in-between state of mind. His songs will make you question a lot of things, about yourself or the things around you.

Sam Hunt

Genre: Country pop

If you want to belt out to any song because TBH, we all get random moments like that, then listen to Sam's tracks. His songs are just the right mix of feels and angst, which can touch anyone's soul. No wonder he won nods worldwide when he released his album Montevallo.

Tori Kelly

Genre: Pop, R&B

Need songs to scream at the top of your lungs when you're having one of those days? Tori's songs will give you that for those moments when you can't deal with your feelings alone.

5 Reasons Why Shadowhunters Has Us Hooked

Shadowhunters, the TV adaptation of the best-selling book series The Mortal Instruments, is now here, and we're starting to become obsessed with it the way we did when The Vampire Diaries first came out! It's not perfect and of course it's not 100% faithful to the book source, but that's all part of the fun. Here are five reasons why this show is a must-watch.

The TV format gives the rich mythology of the books more room to breathe. Here are the basics: Shadowhunters protect human beings from demons and draw power from rune symbols. Our main heroine Clary Fray finds out on her 18th birthday that she's not just any ol' mundane (read: human)—she's actually a very powerful Shadowhunter. She's welcomed to the Shadow World by one of the best in the business, Jace Wayland, who happens to be super cute, just like his other Shadowhunter buddies. Together they encounter warlocks, shape-shifting demons, werewolves, and other supernatural beings. Long story short: all the stories are true!

Just because they're supernatural, doesn't mean they don't have very human problems. If you've read the books or seen the movie adaptation starring Lily Collins, you're probably familiar with the complicated love polygon that practically everyone's a part of. The love triangle of Jace, Clary, and her best friend Simon is just the tip of the iceberg!

The Shadowhunters give us major squad goals. They're fiercely protective of their ward (the human race) and each other, and they use their power for good. They can be pretty intimidating for an outsider, but once you gain their trust, you have allies for life. It also doesn’t hurt that they look really cool in their all-black, leather OOTDs and tattoo-like runes!

The Shadow World is a fantastical wonderland. An old abandoned church that is actually the high-tech Shadowhunter HQ, the ghost town of Chernobyl that houses the biggest threat to the human race and his goons—these are just a couple of examples of how the Shadow World collides with ours. Makes you think of all the possibilities out there!

All the familiar faces will make your head explode. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but look at this lineup and see for yourself. Katherine McNamara from The Fosters is Clary Fray; Dominic Sherwood from Vampire Academy and Taylor Swift's "Style" music video is Jace Wayland; Matthew Daddario from Naomi and Ely's No-Kiss List, who's also the brother of Percy Jackson's Alexandra Daddario, is Alec Lightwood; and Harry Shum Jr. from Glee is Magnus Bane. Watch for fresh face Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood—the sassy Shadowhunter is super fun to watch!

Using This Product Every Day Will Ruin Your Hair

Hair ties have become a somewhat permanent fixture in our beauty routine, but with each use, these elastic bands give stress and pressure to your hair, producing permanent flyaways and dents. Plus, they can snag and break your hair follicles. It's impossible to live without ponytails, buns, and braids, but there are a few things you can do to protect your strands.

Use ties without metal or glued seams.
Fabric hair ties or snag-free ones won't break your hair follicles and cause pesky dents.

Wear your 'dos loose.
Sorry to break it to you, but tight, high ponytails may look sophisticated, but when sporting them you end upstretching your strands to their limit. If you prefer sleek hairstyles, make sure you don't do it on a daily basis. Even your strands need a break!

Never tie your hair up when wet.
When your tresses are fresh post-rinse, they are more susceptible to breakage. Let them air-dry before tying them.

Use leave-on conditioners and serums prior to your updo.
Apart from taming your tresses to conform to a hairstyle, serums and leave-on conditioners strengthen your follicles against possible damage.

From Our Readers: To the Boy Who Chose to Neglect Me

We're on the bridge.
You, me and her.

She was walking away from you.
Still, you kept chasing her.
I was trying to reach you.
I ran to cope up with the distance.
As we got closer, the distance was getting wide.
You're still chasing her.

Bruises on my feet.
They hurt badly.
I'm trying my best, because I want you.
I know you're worth it.

I ran as fast as I could,
Shouted your name as loud as I could.
I know you heard it.
You chose to neglect it.
Just because, you were chasing her.

The Best Ways to Solve All Your Kilay Problems

In this kilay-obsessed world, we get serious brow envy from celebs that perfectly live the hashtag, #browgoals. For us mere mortals who need a little help in the kilay department, here are solutions to some of the most common brow dilemmas.

When your brows are sparse
To volumize your thin and too-far-in-between brow hairs, use a pencil or pen that will help you mimic the look of fullness. For a natural look, use a fine eyebrow pen to draw tiny strands of hair in between the real ones.

K-Palette 1Day Tattoo Real Lasting Eye Brow Liner, P795
K-Palette is available at Beauty Bar branches.

Your brows are too dark.
If you lightened your hair and your brows don't match your dye job, use a tinted brow mascara to change your arches' hue.
Maybelline Eye Studio Fashion Brow Mascara, P359
Maybelline is available at department stores.

Your brows have a bald spot.
Since the spot doesn't have any hair, you'll need a a product that is long-lasting and pigmented. It's best to use a waterproof brow gel liner. A small angled brush is the best tool to fill it in. But if you're a makeup newbie, a well-sharpened gel formula pencil that's water and sweat-resistant will work just as well. Do tiny hair-like strokes to appear like you were born with lush brows.
Esteé Lauder Brow Defining Pencil, P1,430
Esteé Lauder is available at SM Mall of Asia, SM Aura, and Rustan's branches.

Your brows are messy.
Unruly brows can be controlled with a coat of clear mascara. You may also spritz hairspray on a spoolie brush to help them stay in place.
Ever Bilena HD Colorless Mascara
Ever Bilena is available at department stores.

You overtweezed your brows.
Do not panic yet because there is a solution! Every night, coat your brow hairs and bald spot with a hair growth serum. It may take some time, but this method is proven effective! Here's an in-depth guide on how to rehab over-plucked brows.

From Our Readers: To the Guy I Love Who Has a Girlfriend

I remember the first time your eyes met mine. You were smiling so widely and I found it very cute. I always thought you were smiling because you were really just a happy guy. Never did it cross my mind that you were smiling because of a girl.

I remember those times when I was very tired and stressed during weekdays because of college but when Friday comes, a smile slowly spreads from my lips. I loved Fridays because Saturdays always come next. And only during Saturdays was I able to see that smile of yours because we study at the same university but we go to two different campuses.

Do These 12 Activities With Your Bae This Year

Midnight In Paris

Another year, another 12 months with the love of your life. Here are 12 things—one for each month!—you can do with your bae this year. We wish you a year full of love and laughter, Candy Girls and Boys. Have fun!

Get lost in a new place together. Travel to a nearby city or town and discover new places to enjoy a meal in and new people to hear stories from.

Give each other "Me Day" every month. Allow your bae to have one day every month when you're allowed to miss each other, do your own thing, and catch up with the other important people in your lives.

Dress up for a date. Go fancy schmancy with your guy and dress up for one of your dates.

Learn to play his favorite computer game. Show him that you're willing to go as far as learning to play his favorite game for him. If that's not true love, we don't know what is. LOL! Who knows, you might also enjoy it in the end.

Send each other voice messages instead of text messages. Because after a long day in school, nothing beats hearing reassuring words from the person you love.

Get fit together. Your fitness and health goals are easier to achieve when you have an accountability partner who'll support you along the way.

Go biking. Or if you're not yet ready to enroll in fitness classes or find it hard to wake up in the morning to jog with your guy, you can also try biking together. Aside from keeping your body healthy, you can also explore parts of your neighborhood that you've never seen before.

Read the same book and talk about it. Make your very own book club for two, you guys!

Watch the sunrise together. Give yourselves a good start by watching the sunrise together. Trust us, it's as romantic or even more romantic than watching the sun set together.

Come up with your very own dish and name it after yourselves. Go on an experiment in the kitchen together this year, and enjoy the product of your labor together too.

Compose your very own song. It will be a fun time for the two of you to get to know each other, and get all creative and cheesy and funny all at the same time. Your song may not be as good as you both expected, but it will mean more to both of you than all those songs played on the radio.

Learn a classic dance together. We're pretty sure you'll teamwork will be put to the test. It's a good way to prepare for your school prom or graduation dance too.
