Timestamps:

Timestamp: 15:47. The importance of passing funding for Israel and Ukraine. From the words of President Biden and Republican U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, the Minority Leader of the United States Senate.

Timestamp: 20:44. Will Israel launch a ground war and fall into the trap (and plans) of Hamas? Increasing numbers of people are trying to stop this from happening. And here’s why Israel needs to be super cautious about what it does.

Timestamp: 35:19. How is the Arab world in the Middle East reacting to Israel and this crisis? (Note: Surprisingly, it’s not how you expect. This time, the crisis is different for Israel, and for once, the entire Arab world is not united against them. Things have changed.)

Timestamp: 42:46. The threat isn’t just to Israel, of course. A total of 21 US service members reported “minor injuries” as a result of drone and rocket attacks on coalition military bases in Iraq and Syria last week, the Pentagon has now disclosed.

Timestamp: 47:37. In Ukraine, the Russians are foolishly attempting to counter-attack in Avdiivka. (Spoiler alert: it’s not working and they’ve lost perhaps as much as a brigade of equipment, according to some news sources.) In other news, Ukrainian Marines have secured what could be a serious foothold on the Dnipro River left bank, holding ground almost a mile from the river near three communities.

Timestamp: 54:04. Motivation and wisdom. Some encouragement for you as you move along in your journey.

If you just happened to stumble by, let me say a quick word about what we’re doing here.

Thanks in advance for your support!

To date — and they’re not done counting even from day 1 — total deaths already exceed 900

That’s according to almost all media reports, though exact figures are still being tallied. (And since there are dozens of Israeli hostages, the exact number of which are unknown.)

As of this posting, The Washington Post puts the tally in this way.

The death toll has risen to 600 in Israel, according to local media, while Palestinian authorities said at least 313 were killed in Gaza. Thousands more have been injured.

Here’s just one example of how many died. Innocent concert goers were mowed down and massacred.

Not surprising, Israel has formally declared war, and with an unpopular leader at the top (Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu), you can bet that this war isn’t ending anytime soon. (Reminder: Netanyahu is charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in three separate scandals involving powerful media moguls and wealthy associates. He denies wrongdoing.)

Also almost guaranteeing the longevity of the war is the incomprehensible intelligence failure this all was.

Netanyahu will have to atone for this mistake, as well as do all he can to maintain his precarious hold on power.

As a taste of what’s to come, there was the following statement and reality that already Israel has cut off electricity and said it would no longer supply power, fuel, or other goods to the territory. Here’s the current situation, from ABC News:

In a televised address Saturday night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military will use all of its strength to destroy Hamas’ capabilities.

“Get out of there now,” he told Gaza residents, who have no way to leave the tiny, overcrowded Mediterranean territory. Gaza’s 2.3 million people have endured a border blockade, enforced to varying degrees by Israel and Egypt, since Hamas militants seized control in 2007.

In Gaza, much of the population was thrown into darkness Saturday night as Israel cut off electricity and said it would no longer supply power, fuel or other goods to the territory.

This war will sadly be horrific; and it’s already horrible — especially conditions for Palestinians inside Gaza even before the latest outburst of violence. But no one knows how much worse this will get.

Frankly, there is no simple solution. But make no mistake, it will be a brutal campaign. And Israel’s words say they have a very clear goal in mind. This will, without question, re-open the wounds mentioned below. This line of thinking came out earlier today, and while it is speculation, it seems pretty well-informed speculation. Just prior to hitting send, this news broke, proving that line of thinking is already hitting mainstream reporting. Here’s the current situation on the ground, as of today.

(Although I think everyone expects Israel to retake all of this ground as its better-armed ground forces arrive.)

One thing I’m still intensely curious about is how Hamas pulled this off. The places they attacked and seized are areas that are typically fortified and heavily guarded.

Without question, they heavily relied on drones, picking up — it seems — some tips and techniques from the Ukrainians. (See two videos below.)

https://funker530.com/video/israeli-automated-defense-system-destroyed-by-drone/

https://funker530.com/video/hamas-utilize-drone-to-attack-israeli-tank/

It also seems that while a barrage of 3,000 rockets were fired from Gaza, approximately 1,000 fighters deployed in an assault.

Some flew hang gliders over the border. Another group blasted their way through the fortified electronic and cement wall that divides Gaza from the settlements.

With that obstacle breached, even more fighters poured through the gap.

I’m going to share some more video, but from this point forward, viewer discretion is advised.

First, not every incursion effort out of Gaza succeeded, as these clips show.

https://funker530.com/video/hamas-speed-boats-shredded-by-idf/

But some did, and here’s part of the brutal, initial breach. I still have no idea why so many Israeli soldiers seemed unprepared. Some seem to have been sleeping; some not in uniform.

https://funker530.com/video/nsfw-gopro-footage-of-hamas-initial-breach/

While all of that was happening, the settlements were breached, too. And that led to some extraordinary tales of barbarity and also tales of heroism, such as the one below.

Who knows what happens from here, but Israel is moving troops by the thousands toward Gaza.

And the war is already spreading to Lebanon (in the north).

Israel, Hezbollah exchange artillery, rocket fire.

AND, the United States is sending a carrier strike group closer to Israel.

Unfortunately, none of this is going to end well any time soon. So, buckle up and hold on

Hamas lands a major early victory

I’m in the car and typing this by phone (from the passenger seat), but wanted to put out a quick emergency update. (Please forgive typos.)

As you’ve probably heard, Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel. The Washington Post wrote it up like this:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday that “we are at war, and we will win it” after the Islamist militia Hamas launched an assault and took captives following the 50th anniversary of the start of the 1973 Yom Kippur war. At least 100 Israelis are dead, the national emergency service Maged David Adom said, according to the Associated Press. At least 740 people were injured. This has been one of the most serious confrontations in years after weeks of rising tensions along the volatile border. Israeli strikes killed at least 230 people on the Gaza Strip and injured about 1,700, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Israeli authorities said an unknown number of Israeli civilians, soldiers and commanders have been taken captive by Hamas, which indicated it wants to trade them for militants imprisoned in Israel.

Serious ground has been taken.

Serious equipment, too, including tanks.

Finally, even high-ranking officers have been captured, reportedly.

This is a massive intelligence failure, and Israel is calling up reserves for what I am sure will be many days, and probably weeks of operations.

I’ll keep you posted as I can. (Reminder: I’m on vacation, so updates won’t have the typical level of quality.)

U.S. approves ATACMS missiles for Ukraine; also, Ukraine makes critical advance through Russian lines and takes out many high-level officers with deep strike

Hello, my friends!

ATACMS to Ukraine…

For those who caught it, I mentioned in my Thursday podcast that the Biden administration might be pulling a “juke move” and actually sending ATACMS in the latest package, despite news that they were NOT.

I explained this might be a way to gain a larger media hit than simply announcing them in the public press release. And I think that’s what happened.

If you have no idea what ATACMS are or what I’m talking about, welcome. You’re probably new here. lol

ATACMS missiles, or the Army Tactical Missile System (pronounced “attack 'ems”) have been much discussed for quite a while by people like me and analysts who have studied the war. (If you’re about to take a walk, drive, or spend some time at the gym or on a treadmill, check out last week’s podcast, where I break them down, beginning at timestamp: 13:49.)

Or, if you’re sitting at a computer, the Wall Street Journal put this video together.

And here’s a news article on them: US will send Ukraine ATACMS long-range missiles, Biden tells Zelenskiy.

Believe me, this is HUGE news for Ukraine, and there are some really pissed-off (and worried) Russian Generals this morning.

These missiles have a range of up to 190 miles, and they’re going to wreck Russia’s world inside occupied Ukraine. (Ukraine has agreed not to use them to attack Russian territory outside of Ukraine, as they have with previous weapons systems from the West.)

In other big news, two final points.

First, Ukraine has broken through the Russian anti-tank ditch and dragon’s teeth obstacles near Verbove, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

Photo by Institute for the Study of War on September 21, 2023. May be an image of map, poster, radar, magazine and text.

The ISW added the following important context:

CNN had an article citing the general leading Ukraine’s counteroffensive along the southern front, who said his forces have broken through in Verbove – and predicts an even bigger breakthrough to come.

The second big piece of news is that Ukraine claimed huge success from a major strike on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters in occupied Crimea.

The missiles hit a meeting of the fleet’s leadership, and killed and wounded dozens, including top officials. Russia confirmed damage to the building from Friday’s strike, but gave few details on casualties.

You can read about the strike here. And here’s video of the incident.

I’ll keep you posted with any relevant updates if other big news breaks.

For those who don’t know, my name is Stan R. Mitchell, and I’m a prior Marine and journalist.

Every week, I primarily do three things with my podcast:

Cover emerging hotspots and foreign policy news that you absolutely should know. (Why I focus on foreign policy...)

Work to unite our country and remind us of how lucky we are to live in America. (My thoughts on the division in this country...)

And finally, I always share plenty of motivation and wisdom at the end of each episode.

Take a listen to the podcast. I really hope you get something out of it.

As a reminder, please be kind and try your best to love your fellow Americans.

So many men and women have sacrificed, fought, and died to keep this country together the past 240-plus years. Please work daily to unite our country again. The vast majority of Americans are decent, loving, great people.

Also, please try to be a better person each and every day. Try to be kinder on social media and how you interact with others with whom you disagree.

Please join me again in our next episode, and please stay safe until then.

Please note: There is an un-edited, AI-generated transcript, that you can find by clicking the Transcript button at upper right, under the podcast player device.

Timestamps:

Timestamp: 1:27. Vladimir Putin descends to the embarrassing position of having to beg North Korea for help.

Timestamp: 3:24. Ukraine has officially broken through the first line of defense against Russia, and the details of what Russia has left to stop the Ukrainian advance are not real encouraging if you’re Vladimir Putin.

Timestamp: 7:59. Russia is fielding less-effective conscripts, and far fewer officers and sergeants in its forces. And this is resulting in weaker combat power per unit.

Timestamp: 10:39. Russia is losing its edge and dominance on the artillery front, and this bodes poorly for the once artillery-dominant titan.

Timestamp: 18:50. Adam Kinzinger bemoans U.S. officials anonymously leaking out that the Ukrainians are too casualty averse. Kinzinger also argues that it isn’t the Biden administration slow-walking weapons; it’s the bean counters in the Pentagon.

Timestamp: 31:16. Motivation and wisdom, just for you.

Selected source notes:

Trent Telenko thread on Twitter regarding less effective Russian conscripts and leadership, as well as a growing artillery weakness among Russian forces that the Ukrainians finally surpassed.

Ukraine is firing two artillery fire missions for every Russian fire mission for the first time in this war.

Separate source, supporting much of what Telenko is saying above.

Some video footage of artillery dominance by Ukraine these days.
