The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership #9 — The Law of Magnetism

laws of leadership — law of magnetism

laws of leadership — law of magnetism

The Law of Magnetism is the 9th law of  The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership — it  states that “who you are is who you attract.”

To succeed as  a leader, you have to build a great team around you. To build a great team, you have to know who you are looking for and what qualities you desire.

If you have not already, you need to make a list of the qualities you’d like in the people (you want) on your team.

Who you attract is not determined by what you want, it’s determined by who you are — John Maxwell
Click To Tweet

The Law of Magnetism — List the qualities you’d like in the people on your team

Here is a list of the qualities I’d like in the people on my team:

Creative and innovative
Caring and teachable
Solution oriented with a positive attitude
Desire to personally grow and develop
Flexible and responsible
Honest and transparent

Hope you have your own list too.

What determines if you attract people with your desired qualities is not what you want, it is who you are, that is who the Law of Magnetism works.

If you want a team member who takes the lead and is responsible, do you take the lead and are you responsible? If you want a team member who is teachable, are you teachable? If you want a team member who desires personal growth and development, are you intentional about your own personal growth and development?

The Law of Magnetism — You shape your organization culture based on what you value

If you don’t like what you see on your team, check who you are as a leader. There is something in your magnetic field that is attracting people with a particular behavior to you. It is like oil in water, no matter how strong you mix them, they will eventually settle apart.

You, the leader, plays a huge role in shaping the culture of your organization. The current culture in your organization was shaped in part by who you are, what you do, what you value, what you model, and who you reward. Believe it or not, you have attracted people with the same qualities by the Law of Magnetism.

If you don’t like what you see, you might have to change who is looking — Saji Ijiyemi

The Law of Magnetism — Here are the magnets that attract people to you

Generation

In just about any type of organization, most of the time the people who come on board are similar in age to the leaders who hire them. According to a research conducted by PayScale in 2013, the median age of workers at Facebook was 28. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, was 29 years old in 2013.

Attitude

Attitude is one of the most contagious qualities. People who view challenges as exciting opportunities don’t want to hear others who talk about how bad things are all the time. People with positive energy naturally stay away from people with negative energy.

Background

People generally attract—and are attracted to—others of similar background.

Values

“People are attracted to leaders whose values are similar to their own.” It doesn’t matter whether the shared values are positive or negative. Either way, the attraction is equally strong. Martin Luther King Jr. attracted huge followers, so does Adolf Hitler.

Whatever characteristics you possess is what you’ll likely find in your followers — John Maxwell
Click To Tweet

Energy

When you pair a high-energy person with a low-energy person and ask them to work together, they will drive one another crazy. Compared to you, what is the energy level of people who are driving you crazy right now?

Giftedness

People will not follow mediocre leaders, they are attracted to talent and excellence. Entrepreneurs want to follow leaders who have succeeded in their ventures, football players want to follow coaches with great talent, Creative people want to follow leaders who think outside of the box. Like attracts like.

Leadership ability

The leaders you attract will have leadership ability similar to your own. As stated in the Law of Respect, if you are a 3 when it comes to leadership, you will hardly attract 6s and 7s. The leaders you attract will be similar in style and ability to you. This is why it is important to raise your leadership lid.

Action Points to attract people with the right qualities

Increase your leadership. If you are not happy with the leadership ability of the people you are attracting, embrace the Law of the Lid, embrace the Law of Process, and work to increase your leadership skill.
Increase your level of self-awareness. If there is a disparity between your image of yourself and your employees, your level of self-awareness may be low.
Get a mentor. If you are not attracting people with qualities you desire, you might gave to find mentors who are willing to help you grow in each area where you need help

To develop the leader in you, believe there is a leader in you waiting to be developed

develop the leader in you

It’s time to develop the leader in you

No matter who you are, where you are, or what you have done, there is greatness in you, and there is a leader inside of you.

Believe it or not, there is a leader in you waiting to be developed.

Like an oak tree trapped in an acorn and a butterfly trapped in a cocoon, inside of you is a leader trapped in a follower.

To develop the leader in you, believe that there is a leader in you

If you don’t believe that there is a leader in you or you believe but you are not doing anything to develop the leader in you, you will go from your cradle to your casket passing through the cubicle along the way. You are like a precious gift that was never opened, a new car with full gas tank but zero mileage.

Inside of you is a leader trapped in a follower  — Myles Munroe

To believe is to have faith or confidence in truth of something or someone. You believe when you have a conviction that a person or a thing is. If you want to develop the leader in you, you must be convinced and be confident that you are a leader.

To develop the leader in you, surround yourself with people who believe in the leader in you

If you doubt the truth that there is a leader in you, surround yourself with people who believe in the leader in you and believe on their beliefs until your own beliefs kicks in.

In the movie “Unbroken,” Louis “Louie” Zamperini (portrayed by Jack O’Connell) was a mess when he was growing up. A smoker at age 5 and a drinker by 8, Louie was a disappointment to his parents.

One day, Louie was caught in one of his mischief, and runs. His brother Pete sees how fast he runs, and encouraged him to compete as a track and field athlete. Here is the conversation that went on between the two brothers:

Pete: “You can do this Louie, you just have to believe you can”

Louie: “I don’t believe”

Pete: “I do”

Sometimes you have to believe in someone else’s belief in you until your own belief kicks in —…
Click To Tweet

Encouraged by his brother’s belief in him, Zamperini finally joined the school’s track team and went on to become one of southern California’s top athletes, Olympic runner, a World War II bombardier, and hero because he has a brother who believes in him until his own belief kicks in.

You want to make more money next year? Invest in yourself

boost your income 300x171 You want to make more money next year? Invest in yourself

invest in yourself

If you want to make more money next year, you have to invest in yourself.

The late Jim Rohn said the secret of economic success is “to understand how to become more valuable in the marketplace.”

“You get paid for bringing value to the marketplace. It will take time . . . but you don’t get paid for time, you get paid for value.”

You will not invest in yourself if you think you are not worth it. — Saji Ijiyemi
Click To Tweet

Invest in yourself so you can bring more value to the marketplace

The America income ladder is very unique. “In 2013, the low end of the ladder was $7.25 an hour ($15,080 annually) and the high-end earner was Appaloosa Management founder and hedge fund leader David Tepper, who earned $3.5 billion in personal income.” — Tony Robbins’ Book, Money: Master the Game, 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom.

Why do the cashiers at McDonald’s earn such an incredible low income at $7.77 an hour while others like David Tepper earn such a high income?

It’s because “the marketplace put very little value on being a cashier at the McDonald’s because it requires a skill that can be learned in few hours by almost anyone. However, the ability to successful expand people’s financial returns in a significant way is a much more rare and valued set of skills.”

You have to value yourself to invest in yourself

So, to have more, you have to become more valuable. To become more valuable, you have to invest in yourself. To invest in yourself, you have to work harder on yourself than you do on your job. To work harder on yourself, you have to think you are worth the investment. To think you are worth the investment, you have to value yourself.

The greatest investment you will ever make is the investment in yourself. — Saji Ijiyemi
Click To Tweet

The cashier at McDonald’s and the hedge fund manager have the same amount of time in a day, but the value they put in each hour is different, and so does the pay they get per hour.

So you should stop asking “how can I make more money?” and start asking “what am I going to do to add more value to the marketplace?” Now you know what to do: invest in yourself.

Live Life by Design: Day 5 — Know what you have enthusiasm for

enthusiasm 300x221 Live Life by Design: Day 5 — Know what you have enthusiasm for

enthusiasm — know what are you passionate about

Enthusiasm speaks to your passion. Enthusiasm is the excitement, the keen interest, the passion, the fire, and the obsession you feel when you are doing an activity that ignites you.

A recent Gallup poll shows that 70% of Americans either hate their jobs or are completely disengaged. What might be responsible? Lack of enthusiasm. To live your life by design, you have to know what you have enthusiasm for—what you are passionate about.

Your enthusiasm ignites you

You find what you have enthusiasm for when you find something that ignites you, something you can do and continue to do even when you are tired.

The activities that you are passionate about are great indication of who you should be, where you should be, and what you should be doing.

If you are not doing what you have enthusiasm for or what you are passionate about, it might be because you have allowed people to talked you out of it.

You might have been told that the activities you are passionate about will not put money in your pocket, but you know that you are not doing this for your pocket, you’re doing it for your purpose.

You might have been told that the kind of work you have enthusiasm for will not allow you to save enough for retirement, but you know you are not doing this for your pension, you’re doing it for your passion.

The activities that you are passionate about are great indication of who you should be, where you should be, and what you should be doing. — Saji Ijiyemi

You know you have found what you have enthusiasm for when you find something you love to do regardless of whether you are paid to do it or not, something you are happy to do when others are complaining about it. This is your enthusiasm. This is your passion.

You invest in what you have enthusiasm for

Another clue to what you have enthusiasm for is to pay attention to the subjects you love to debate passionately.

If you have to pay for a seminar, a conference, or a workshop, what kind of conference will you pay for?

If you have to buy a book for your growth and development, besides textbooks or a book that is recommended to pass a professional exam, what kinds of books will you invest in? All these speaks to your passion, they ignite you.

If you want to live your life by design, find what you are passionate about.

Your enthusiasm makes you come alive

You want to pause right now and ask yourself, “What I am doing right now, is it killing me or is it making me come alive?” If what you spend majority of your time on a work that is not making you come alive I challenge you not to settle.

The only way to do great work is to love what you do, if you have not found it yet, keep looking, don’t settle — Steve Jobs

I know you will find that, so keep looking.

I am excited when people tell me they are inspired by talking to me. I am happy when people tell me they feel energized after connecting with me or talking to me because I’m passionate about empowering people, giving them information that could accelerate their success, and asking them questions that will make them to see their situation in a different light.

Here is an email I received from Greg:

greg testimony e1416602093195 Live Life by Design: Day 5 — Know what you have enthusiasm for

Greg’s testimonial — enthusiasm

This kind of testimonial gives me more energy to continue to empower people.

I know there is something you have enthusiasm for. I know there is something that fires up your passion. Only you know it and you are even thinking about it right now.

Your enthusiasm is who you should be

Listen to your heart, that is who should be, that is where you should be, and that is what you should be doing.

If you want to live your life by design, I will suggest that you write down three activates you love to do without thinking of the pay or the popularity of the activity. You just love to do these things.

These are what you have enthusiasm for, passionate about, fires you up, and excites you.

If you can invest your time in these activities, you will live your life by design, and not by default.

The greatest act of true leaders — Myles Munroe’s final words on legacy, succession, mentoring, and true leadership

Dr. Myles Munroe e1415586169628 The greatest act of true leaders — Myles Munroes final words on legacy, succession, mentoring, and true leadership

Dr. Myles Munroe final words on true leaders

The greatest act of true leaders is what happens in their absence. True leaders make themselves unnecessary.

These are Myles Munroe’s final words before his sudden death in a jet crashed that killed him, his wife, and seven others.

Myles Munroe death was a shock to the world, maybe not to him.

Judging from his final words, it seems the legendary Munroe talks a lot about succession, legacy, and what happens in the absence of true leaders.

Here is an excerpt from Myles Munroe’s final interview with elanceTV before his death.

True leaders invest in people

True leadership is measured by what happens after you die. This is why true leaders don’t invest in buildings, they invest in people.”

If everything you have done dies with you, you are a failure.

Success without a successor is failure. Your legacy should not be in buildings, programs, and projects, your legacy must be in people.

The greatest act of  true leaders is mentoring. Who are you mentoring to take your place?

Jesus never invested in buildings, He invested in people  — Myles Munroe

True leaders make themselves unnecessary

True leaders work themselves out of the job. True leaders measure their greatness by their absence.

Jesus proved His greatness by leaving and His organization grew in His absence.

True leaders make themselves unnecessary — Myles Munroe

If you die today as a leader, what happens to your organization, your church, and your business. If it dies when you die, you are a failure.

True leaders identify their successor, mentor them and train them

The best thing you can do right now as a true leader is to identify your successors, and mentor them and train them.

Jesus Christ said to Peter, “Do you love me?” Yes Lord, “Peter said.” Jesus replied, “the company is yours, feed the people.” and He [Jesus] left.

What happens in your absence? that is your legacy.
