In Anticipation of The Mortal Instruments

Finally, I leave you with the trailer. No only does the movie look crazy good, but it would appear they've spent a healthy amount of money on special effects (another sign of good things to come). Unfortunately, I won't get to the theatre until next Tuesday, but you can expect a review as soon as I form my completely biased opinion.

Book Trailer for Mind Static
Guys! I'm so excited that the book trailer for my newest YA paranormal release has gone live! This is me right now:
I decided to go an entirely different route from the slow and dramatic trailers I've created in the past, and wanted something upbeat, quick, and fun. There's so much work behind making a trailer, starting with just the right music, the perfect pictures, and the careful editing in putting everything together so it will make an intriguing story. With an adventurous story and a main character who's witty, this was actually a blast to put together, and I feel like I just witnessed the party of a lifetime.
Without further delay, I give you the official trailer for "Mind Static"!

Obsessed With Death?
In interviews, I'm often asked what's with my obsession with death. Honestly, I never put much though into this until I realized four of my five novels have dealt with death as part of the main storyline, my favorite shows are Dexter and The Walking Dead, and I've started a collection of Day of the Dead statues from Mexico. On second thought, maybe I do have a thing with death. Okay, time to panic.
As pretty much anyone else would do with today's technology, I went on the internet with the intent to self-diagnose. Here are some of the signs I discovered:
1. Your favorite things to do are visit cemeteries to look at graves.
Uh, I seriously have a major issue with cemeteries, and have given my husband strict directions not to bury me in one. I think they're creepy, and that it's morbid to think you're standing over the rotting corpse of someone you love. If I want to remember someone, I would much rather do so with pictures from their happy times on this earth.
2. You have all the Faces of Death movies, and love to look at graphic images of real deaths.
I do enjoy a good zombie movie, though there are more often times than not that I have turned away when a scene become too gory. I usually have to remind myself that it's all Hollywood magic, just so I can continue to watch. I can't imagine I would be able to stomach one minute of the Faces of Death movies—I just Googled it out of curiosity, and about lost my cookies after what I found.
3. You wear black clothing and black makeup.
My daughter would tell you a majority of my wardrobe consists of black and white (she's trying to break me of the habit), but I have yet to don black Doc Martins with black pants and a black top. I do wear black eyeliner, but a very modest amount, like a perfectly normal woman who isn't so great with makeup does. Pretty sure I have a long ways to go until I resemble Winona Ryder's character in Beetlejuice.
4. You're afraid of doing anything for fear of dying or some other tragedy.
While the occasional thought of plunging to a firey death has come to me a time or two when riding an airplane, I would say I'm not fearful of doing things in general. Although terrified of heights, I still climbed part of Mount Rainier, zip-lined and parasailed in Cabo, stood on the top deck of the Empire State Building, and rode dozens of rollercoasters. Looking back, I'm starting to think that maybe I'm a bit too adventurous, and it wouldn't hurt to tone it down a bit.
5. Your favorite thing to write is poetry and journals that speak of death.
Okay, maybe it could be proved in a court of law that I'm guilty of this one, although I suck at poetry, and I stopped writing a journal years ago. But then again, there's the books...
So 4/5 negative answers must prove for something, right? At least I'm telling myself that. I like to think that as death is a natural part of life, I'm just extremely conscious of it, and not trying to pretend like the possibilities aren't looming over our heads. All I know is that I won't be checking into Death Junkies Anonymous anytime soon.

Cover Real: Mind Static
Expected Release: Late August 2013
Genre: YA ParanormalCover Designer and Photographer: Jen Naumann (At or With Me Publishing)
Synopsis:
Although life has been pretty good to Keyanna Sanders, the day she turns eighteen she’s about to get everything she could ever wish for—a hot guy who’s really into her, a sporty car she’s always dreamed of owning, and the party of a lifetime that no one will forget any time soon.
But before long, she’ll understand these wishes are more than a coincidence, and that they come at a steep price. Keyanna is more than just an average high school senior, her best friend is more than the innocent boy next door, and her sudden good fortune isn’t just by chance. When her estranged father re-enters her life, she’ll have to decide who to trust, and whether or not the man she loves has suddenly become the enemy.
Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I'm so excited to present to you the stunning cover for my newest novel! There's a very humorous story behind this photo shoot, but as my sweet friend (the model) is getting married tomorrow, I'm not going to embarrass her on a national level (Mindy, you're beautiful and I wish you all the best—we're going to have a blast at your wedding)! Maybe I'll share the story after the honeymoon is over.
Mind Static was a total blast to write. Keyanna has a bit of spunk to her like Emma in The Day Zombies Ruined My Perfectly Boring Life, only with more wit and less sarcasm. The story is filled with hot guys (what other kind of guys are there in fiction?), a big party, tropical locations, and lots of questions. I hope to have it out for purchase by late August. ARC copies will be available very SOON, so contact me if you're interested in writing a review.

Summer Sun Award
I was nominated for this awesome award by my friend and fellow blogger, Shanah Wooldrage. I first met Shanah on Twitter, then in person at a writer's convention in Wisconsin. She's a lot of fun, full of energy, and very upbeat!
The intent of this award is to present it to someone who brightens your day either in blog format or in general and to have a little fun with giving up some summer secrets. This summer has flown by so quickly it's depressing, so I'm glad to have something to brighten my day!
Favourite song with summer in the title or the lyrics (give the line): Since I'm a pretty big Justin Timberlake fan, I have to go with Summer Love. You simply can't listen to that song without dancing!
Favourite book about summer: Wow, I can't really remember which books took place in the summertime. I'm sure I've read many, I just have a crappy memory. Doesn't Lauren Oliver's Delirium take place then?
Favourite hot summer film: Sadly enough, I know just about every line of The Goonies, but I can't remember if it took place in the summer. Didn't Mouth give Bran crap that they could've spent their summer cruising around if he hadn't failed his driver's test? I know they're wearing coats in most of the film, but they live in a colder area. Either way, that's going to be my answer. It's my favorite movie in any category.
Favourite summer memory: On our fifth wedding anniversary (4th of July) we had over 50 people camping in the yard of our lake home. It was so much fun having my friends and family all together, it was like our wedding day all over again. Then there was a giant storm that freaked us out, forcing a bunch of us to huddle in the garage until 4 in the morning. I remember my dad coming out in the middle of the night telling "us kids" it was time to go to bed. I hadn't been told that in over decade. The weekend was filled with craziness.
Favourite summer holiday destination: That would have to be our lake home. It's only two hours away so we go there quite often, although with all the other things we have going on in the summer, it's not often enough. I do some really great writing while there.
What books will be in your suitcase this summer? I challenged myself to read an obnoxious amount of books this summer so I won't list them all, but the best reads so far were: One by LeighAnn Kopans, Foreign Identity by Becca J. Campbell, Rats Saw God by Rob Thomas, Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk, The Future of Us by Jay Asher, Death and Kisses by Clover Autrey, The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe, and Paper Towns by John Green. I highly recommend each and every one of them!
What’s your likely destination this summer? We were already up by Canada a couple of weeks ago for a fishing trip with my parents and siblings. The only destination left is our lake home. And I'm okay with that.
What hottie would you most like to be sharing the hot days and long nights with this summer? Ummm, other than my husband? Okay, if you're going to twist my arm I would have to say Jack Johnson. He has an amazing voice, a gentle soul, and can surf the hell out of those Hawaiian waves. One day I hope to spend a summer in Hawaii...
Here are the rules:
1. Display the Summer Sun Award logo and link back to the blog of the person who nominated you.
2. Answer the questions listed above.
3. Nominate a further eight lucky recipients (one for each sun-ray).
I nominate the following people for brightening various areas of my internet life (they're all a giant ball of fun in my life, and I'm thankful I met them all!):

Jack Johnson - "I Got You" Music Video
If you've read What I've Done then you're already well aware of what a giant Jack Johnson fan I am. It never hurts that he lives in my favorite vacation spot of all time, either. If you don't really know Jack's music, I suggest you give this easy going tune a listen. The visual of the video is just as pleasing. I dare you to listen and not tap your toe or find yourself whistling...

Plot Twists, Holes and Messed Up Endings
I'm a total story junkie. I love hearing new tales, whether told in movies or books. While I usually say I like them to be completely unique and surprising, there are times when I get the feeling Hollywood's intentions are to do nothing more than completely shock the hell out of their viewers in any way they can with a really messed up ending. Sometimes it's a good thing, when done with good storytelling. Other times it's like watching a grown man dancing in footed pajamas to an off tune jazz number.
This past week I was able to get in a few movies during mommy/daughty time (daughter's nickname for it), and in the middle of the night when my brain refused to shut down. While I still haven't figured out why I like to scare the crap out of myself, later having to worry about shadows moving in the dark, scary thrillers are my favorite. Therefore I watched Dark Skies (for a third time), 6 Souls, and The Uninvited—all scary movies that each contained some pretty crazy plot twists.
While I really enjoyed the twists for the most part, I was also annoyed by some of the plot holes that came with them. I certainly don't expect each story to be perfect, and as a writer I know how horribly frustrating and infuriating plot holes can be. But when there are reasons to doubt the final outcome of all the events brought together, it just ruins the story. I can't discuss the plot holes of these three flicks in any detail or I would be giving away the twist for those who haven't seen them. But I would love to sit down with the movie's writers and ask if they could explain these holes, or if they were intentional. Do they even know they exist? Maybe they want the viewers to have to sit back and wonder about these things after the movie is finished. Or maybe the producers are so anxious to make a buck that they completely missed these holes all together.
Regardless, each of these movies earned a 4 or 5 star rating from me. Despite their flaws, the stories were intriguing enough to hold my interest, and make me glad I spent the time watching them.
