Valkyrie’s Curse Series Book 1
BY ELLIE MACK
Excerpt
He felt he had the favor of the Norns, the three goddesses associated with destiny, that were akin to the Greek gods of fate.
Having the favor of the gods meant success in his goals. He was destined to be Lif, the last man standing, the lone man that would repopulate the earth after Ragnarok. In essence, he would become the new Adam.
The rituals were necessary, an integral part of the process before using the key. Unfolding the linen handkerchief carefully, the ancient bronze key looked nothing like what most would think of as a key. A circular piece, about six inches in diameter spanned from his thumb to the tip of his middle finger. Runic writings along the outside edge written within the form of the great serpent Jormungand, the great dragon conquering the gripping animal grouping in a circular band about two inches wide, the design in the eternal triskell pattern. Inside of that, written in runes was the location of the gjallerhorn. At the center were nine swords pointing to an amber stone, nine strands over an open area, the stone center raised with a square notch in the back. It had to be positioned precisely at the solstice.

HAVEN AWAKENING
Verity Book 1
BY GRYFFYN PHOENIX
Blurb
Some things are better left unseen.
The kids at Haven have been waiting. Legend foretold the veil-seer would lead them to victory over their sworn enemy Helm. With her arrival comes the shocking realization that she is the one thing they never expected: a mortal. Verity didn’t want the cornea transplant for her sixteenth birthday. She couldn’t have imagined it would make her the veil-seer, a coveted weapon in an ancient feud.
Now she’s stuck trying to master her new powers, make friends, and stay alive. Being saved by Helm too many times for comfort, Verity wonders which side she should be fighting for. The problem is something evil lurks in Haven, and the only thing it wants is for the new veil-seer to die.
Haven Awakening shows that turning sixteen isn’t always sweet. Gryffyn Phoenix takes the YA scene by storm with the first book in the Haven Awakening series—a supernatural fantasy filled with life-threatening conflicts, heartbreaking betrayal, peer pressure, and the dangers of finding true love.

Verity Book 1
BY GRYFFYN PHOENIX
Excerpt
Editorial Note: Edited for language.
“And what am I looking for?”
Cass came strutting over to me. I will ignore her gloating smirk. I will ignore her gloating. I will remember that I’m not carrying a weapon and can do very little about her gloating.
I will get my own sword as soon as possible.
“Very.” When Kaydn took a step toward me I made a corresponding one back. “Okay.” He gave Cass a little helpless shrug, like I was the one on the rag. Bastard. “Verity, we need you to spot a creature. It’s called a Baku. It has the body of a horse, head of a lion, and the legs of a tiger. Be careful of its claws, for they are poison.”
It’d have been nice if he had given me that warning when we faced the afrit.
“What would a Baku be doing in North Dakota?”
“It’s a long story.” He waved away my words.
Yeah. Why do I think that when he says that, it’s code for, “If we tell you, we’re scared you won’t do what we say”?
And why am I not strong enough to demand he tell me anyway?
I’m a wimp. Hear me roll over and die of shame?
We trudged through the woods, which, by the way, is so much harder than you’d think. It’s not like the ground is all clear and smooth sailing. Nope. When those trees give up leaves they fall on the ground and fester. So mostly you’re walking under trees and through all this wet soggy stuff, which is hell on your kicks. Usually, I’d be complaining up a storm. I used to swear Green Acres was no place for me.
Since getting my new eyes, I seemed to have developed a natural ability of repelling green slime.
The fact that my two companions were doing a whole bunch of complaining and tripping over hidden tree roots while I seemed to just float over everything might be why I was getting some jollies.
After twenty minutes I was more than ready to either find this thing or give up. Fortunately, I spotted it. The creature’s lion’s mane was the color of midnight as it rustled in the breeze. A crackling energy seemed to pulse from its velvet coat. Its eyes shined like stars when it caught me staring at it from behind an elm tree. Reaching only up to my waist, I was surprised to find something Haven needed me to spot that wasn’t weaned on steroids.
“There.” I pointed straight at it.
Kaydn and Cass went running at the creature with swords drawn. The ring of their weapons was dulled as they made short work of slicing the creature that never made one effort to protect itself. I backed away in horror as I watched the ground turn muddy brown as its blood ran like a river.
Panting, Cass cleaned her blade on the creature’s hide, “Well, that was easy.”
“More like disgusting,” I yelled at them. “Why did you do that?”
“It was kill or be killed,” she spat at me.
Shaking my head, I said, “There was no threat here, Cassandra.”
“You know nothing.” She turned from me. I gagged as she started to skin the beast.
“Very.” Kaydn blocked my view of her gory work. “The creature is called a Baku. People used to cry out in desperation, ‘Devour the Baku.’ Whatever else you think, this was a good thing.”
It didn’t feel good.
It didn’t look good.
And as far as any of my other senses, put them in the downright “awful” category.
You know what your parents say about it looking and squawking like a duck? Yeah. Probably a duck. Which made this thing a f**ked duck, and I didn’t want any part of it.
Which was when a roar went tearing through the forest. A sound so outraged and grief-stricken it ripped through my soul and left a jagged tear. On a pain scale, if my discovery of Kaydn’s cheating heart was a skinned knee, this was brain surgery—without anesthesia. Thunderous galloping followed, which was when I saw the house-sized version of what my former “friends” had just killed come leaping into the clearing.
Cass wheeled away from it, as Kaydn moved to protect me.
Their weapons at the ready, they shifted with unease as the newcomer sniffed at the remains of the Baku. “I don’t see it clearly,” Kaydn confessed. “Give me more details, Very.”
My head tilted to the side as I saw the lion take shuddering breaths of the deceased. It made me think it was … crying.
“I believe—” I took a swallow as I tried to fight back my own tears.
“Speak, veil-seer,” Cass roared.
Which was what convinced the creature to stop its grieving and get with the revenge. “I’m pretty sure it’s the Baku’s mom,” I confessed.
“Crap,” Kaydn swore.
“Call D’egan,” Cass begged Kaydn.
“Screw that, Cass. You wouldn’t listen to Nyn or Willow about the research. You wanted to do this, you get us out of it.”
I’m no fool.
I’m no coward.
Still, I turned around and began to walk away.
I am also not an idiot.
The sound of the battle happening behind me mattered little at this point. I knew I should care if they were hurt, but I didn’t. The grieving sobs of the momma Baku still echoed in my head. I kept rubbing at my nose trying to get the smell of its baby’s blood out of my head.
“Help me,” I whispered in my heart. “Please help me.” Closing my eyes, I tried to cut off my sobs before they escaped.
I didn’t hear the pop or feel his entrance, but somehow I walked straight into Haydn’s arms. As soon as his warmth engulfed me, my sorrow broke the tight tether I had placed on it.
“Doll face,” he whispered. I felt the wind pick up as his wings took us to the mountain’s summit, far from the confrontation. “Verity.” He shook his head. “What have they done to you?”
“I’m fine,” I managed to choke past the emotion strangling me raw. “I really am just fine,” I repeated. I kept saying it over and over, even after he wrapped his arms around me and let me cry out my pain into his shoulder. He smelled like marshmallows over an open fire. Sweet and dangerous.
And very delicious.
He began to run his palm over my back, making a slight choking noise. “I know, doll face,” he swore to me. “You’re fine.”
[image error]Meet Author Gryffyn Phoenix…
As a child, I spent my summers in Haven. Running through trees, splashing in creeks, dancing with the fae, and always getting home before night. I grew up. I went out into the world. I went to school, college, traveled, loved and lost and loved again. I explored, and due to my sense of adventure with a good dose of curiosity, I traveled down some of the most interesting paths. I went on many journeys so I could return home and share them with others. With each experience, with each success and every failure, Haven became a little brighter … bigger … more complex. Now I get to share it all with you. I’ve written television shows, improved movie scripts, and even wrote the first e-sports movie. I tried to bring magic to every story I was asked to explore. Bareknuckle Bastards Book 1
BY SARAH MacLEAN
Excerpt
Prologue
The Past
The three were woven together long before they were aware, strands of spun, silken steel that could not be separated—not even when their fate insisted upon it.
Brothers, born on the same day, in the same hour, at the same minute to different women. The high-priced courtesan. The seamstress. The soldier’s widow. Born on the same day, in the same hour, at the same minute to the same man.
The duke, their father, whose arrogance and cruelty fate would punish without hesitation, stealing from him the only thing he wanted that his money and power could not buy—an heir.
It is the Ides of March the seers warn of, with its promise of betrayal and vengeance, of shifting fortune and inalienable providence. But for this sire—who was never more than that, never close to father—it was the Ides of June that would be his ruin.
Because on that same day, in that same hour, at that same minute, there was a fourth child, born to a fourth woman. To a duchess. And it was this birth—the birth all the world thought legitimate—that the duke attended, even as he knew the son who was to be his heir in name and fortune and future was not his own and still, somehow, was his only hope.
Except she was a daughter.
And with her first breath, she thieved future from them all, as powerful in her infancy as she would become in her womanhood. But hers is a story for another time.
This story begins with the boys.

A Wildstone Novel
BY JILL SHALVIS
Blurb
Following the USA Today bestselling author of Lost and Found Sisters comes Jill Shalvis’ moving story of heart, loss, betrayal, and friendship
Six months after Lanie Jacobs’ husband’s death, it’s hard to imagine anything could deepen her sense of pain and loss. But then Lanie discovers she isn’t the only one grieving his sudden passing. A serial adulterer, he left behind several other women who, like Lanie, each believe she was his legally wedded wife.
Rocked by the infidelity, Lanie is left to grapple with searing questions. How could she be so wrong about a man she thought she knew better than anyone? Will she ever be able to trust another person? Can she even trust herself?
Desperate to make a fresh start, Lanie impulsively takes a job at the family-run Capriotti Winery. At first, she feels like an outsider among the boisterous Capriottis. With no real family of her own, she’s bewildered by how quickly they all take her under their wing and make her feel like she belongs. Especially Mark Capriotti, a gruffly handsome Air Force veteran turned deputy sheriff who manages to wind his way into Lanie’s cold, broken heart—along with the rest of the clan.
Everything is finally going well for her, but the arrival of River Brown changes all that. The fresh-faced twenty-one-year old seems as sweet as they come…until her dark secrets come to light—secrets that could destroy the new life Lanie’s only just begun to build.

“Yeah, well, people can hide in plain sight,” she said grimly. “You think you know someone, you think it’s safe to love them and …” She clamped her mouth shut.
He met her gaze, his own dark one warm and curious. “Personal experience?”
“Maybe. Just a little.” She shook her head and turned to look out over the water. “So this is your happy place?”
‘Yeah.”
“Are you … happy?
He didn’t answer for a long time. In fact, he searched the bag, found one last chalupa and took his time eating it so she thought maybe the conversation was over.
“That would’ve been better with another sauce on it but someone Bogarted them all,” he said.
She lifted a shoulder. “Be fast or be hungry.”
He laughed and she realized she could get addicted to that sound very fast.
“I wasn’t happy here,” he said suddenly, surprising her. “Not for a long time after I came back. I was career military. I was good at what I did and I craved the adrenaline rush and the sense of accomplishment. When I came back, I was angry and bitter.”
“What changed?” she asked.
“Not much on the inside.” He gave her a wry grimace. “But Samantha and Sierra … they’re the opposite of angry and bitter.”
“I’ve noticed,” she said on a low laugh.
“They lost their mom. The last thing they needed was an angry jerk for a dad.”
“You fake it pretty good.”
He toasted her with his soda in thanks. “You were married too,” he said.
She nodded.
“You’re divorced?”
“No. I’m a widow.”
Mark didn’t show a lot of emotion, he was good at hiding himself. Real good. But there was a flash of shock. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”
“But you did know I take three sugars.”
He didn’t smile or let her joke this away. “How long ago?” he asked.
She shook her head. “It doesn’t matter. If he hadn’t died when he had, I’d have killed him myself.” There. She said it out loud. And it only hurt a little. A dull pain really, sort of like a boulder barreling into her. “Probably shouldn’t admit that to a cop, right?” she teased at his silence.
“I’m not a cop right now. And I wouldn’t judge a murderous urge.”
“Because you’ve had one or two?”
“Or a hundred trillion million,” he said.
She choked out a laugh. He challenged her like no one else, and he was also fairly effortlessly dragging her past out of her. At least part of it. But there was no way she’d tell him what Kyle had done to her. That humiliation was all her own, thank you very much. “I’m not actually kidding you know, about the murderous urge.”
“Neither am I.”
She nodded. Anger, she understood. Anger was a wall she’d built to protect herself. She knew that because she could feel the weight of the bricks she’d built around her heart. What she didn’t know was how to tear it down.

[image error]TIL DEATH DO US PART
BY STEPHANIE AYERS
Excerpt
Traffic was the only thing that could put a damper on her Christmas spirit. The only way out of the water-locked city was by bridge. During the holidays, the bridge was always packed, and if you could travel more than an inch every five minutes, you were lucky. Today was no exception. An endless line of cars behind her matched the endless ocean of steel ahead. A slight jolt rocked her for a moment as an impatient driver bumped her fender.
She was beginning to regret taking the outside lane along the bridge as she saw big white flakes floating from the sky. Sudden visions of her car careening off the bridge, her body broken and bloodied, came to mind. She laughed at herself and shook it off, even as she felt a slight tremor come from the bridge beneath her. Another tremor sent the car behind into her bumper again. The jolt this time was a little harder, though still not enough to cause any damage. She inched forward as the traffic opened up slightly, wishing she were off the bridge already.
A few more inches and she could see the end of the bridge. The congestion was still heavy but she was relieved to see that it was at least moving. The bridge grumbled and trembled a bit more than usual and she would be more than happy to leave it. It was almost maddening in its noise. It slowly grew louder and she found herself at a dead stop. She imagined the little Rice Krispie elves standing on a rail and singing, “Snap! Crackle! Pop!” as the sound became significantly louder. A loud rumble that shook the entire bridge surprised and worried her.
The smell of hot steel filtered in through her vents as the bridge collapsed beneath her. Her trunk slid into the front windshield of the car behind, tossing her head against the seat. Glass sprayed her, some piercing her skin, as she came face to face with the bumper of the truck in front of her. Intense pain filled her even as she lost feeling from the hips down. Her eyes flicked around in agony. Her legs were pinned as the weight of the vehicles above crushed into hers. The bridge trembled again, shaking sideways as if blown by the wind. A small sound escaped as she realized with fading clarity that the vehicles were shifting and releasing some of the weight. The bumper slid to the left and the frame of her car lent support to the side of the truck as it turned. Her body was jarred once more and she screamed, but it was drowned out by the sound of the groaning steel.
Flashes of memory filled her mind–her fifth birthday party, her first middle school dance, graduation, and her first true love. His face came into focus before her. His clay colored eyes surrounded by naturally soft skin; his easy closed lip smile that peeked from between two deep pits on either side of it and one just beneath it; his white doctor’s jacket contrasting sharply with his healthy complexion. She heard his words again, hurting just as much now as they did then.
“I can’t make you wait for me. It’s not fair to you or to me. What if I don’t come back?” She remembered the weight of his hands on her shoulders. “What if I contract some fatal illness over there? I could never ask you to take care of me, to burden you in that way. No. It’s better this way.” She remembered the warmth of his palm cupping her chin. “We have no idea what the future will bring us. You know I won’t stand in your way.” She remembered the trail of tears on his face as plainly as if he were standing in front of her now.
Her voice bounced against the crushed frame of her car as she pleaded with him. “If you loved me, you wouldn’t do this.”

S.W.A.T. officer Jake Stefani already lost one little boy to gang violence, the dead boy’s older brother is missing, and Jake’s not about to let the same thing happen to a neighbor’s son. He drags the youngster home only to discover much more than a passing interest in the boy’s beautiful, but wary, mother. Forced to take a leave of absence after a bust goes awry, Jake can think of nothing better to occupy his time than to keep Carrie and her son safe, and locate the missing teen who holds the key to taking the gang off the streets, once and for all.
But Jake doesn’t count on his stubborn, intriguing neighbor distracting him from his job, or the passion that flares between them. He doesn’t expect her amazing son to steal a piece of his heart. Jake is ready to risk everything for Carrie, body and soul. But it’s not all up to him. If their new love is to survive, Carrie will need to be strong enough to see the man’s beating heart behind the badge, to look beyond the pain of her past, and decide that loving again is worth the risk.

Karen’s Killer Fixin’s #Recipe: Karen’s Chicken Biscuits
It’s time for Karen’s Killer Fixin’s! Over the years, I’ve filled two 4-inch, 3-ring binders with my own creations as well as recipes my family and friends were willing to share with me. I simply love to cook and want to share that love with my readers. So every Friday, I share one recipe I think you and your family might enjoy. It might be a main course recipe. A cookie or baked item. Candy. Salads. Whatever strikes my eye and fancy…which today is KAREN’S CHICKEN BISCUITS!
If you’re looking for something different to make for the family that they’ll love, this is the recipe for you. They’re similar to beef pasties but “lighter” somehow. That doesn’t mean less filling though. Fix a salad with these, and no one will walk away hungry. I promise! I admit this one takes a bit of work but it’s so worth it. Grab an eager assistant and it will go so much faster. I’ve been known to make a double batch so there’s enough left over for lunches. It’s a “grab and go” meal that’s good hot or cold!
I hope you enjoy today’s Killer Fixin’s. Happy eating!
Karen
P.S. We’re at 380 recipes and counting with this posting. Hope you find some recipes you like. If this is your first visit, please check out past blogs for more Killer Fixin’s. In the right-hand column menu, you can even look up past recipes by type. i.e. Desserts, Breads, Beef, Chicken, Soups, Author Specials, etc.

“So, you are the Heart of the Mountain. What can you show me, I wonder?” Kherak muttered, pulling her thoughts back to the task in hand. She settled back in her armchair with the crimson embroidered and beaded Shamanic Shawl across her shoulders. The item was old, far older than the Shaman herself, and imbued with magic, for it had passed down from Shaman to Shaman, and each woman had added to it. To all appearances it was simply the shawl of an old woman, but there was nothing simple about the garment. It was a symbol of status, an heirloom with much Power and, of course, it kept her warm.
A pearlescent glow rose in the Opal, which hovered above the Circle adorning the table. Colours shifted and, as she placed the Heart of the Mountain over the large stone, the red and black pattern began to move, swirling like a whirlpool. “I am Kherak Var, Shaman, as my kin have been before me. Show me your secrets; guide me in seeking my kin.”
This was strong and wild magic, flowing in a torrent which was close to sweeping the ailing woman away with its force. Suddenly a voice rumbled around, timbre low like thunder, drawing her in and making the old Shaman tingle in ways she had not experienced for many years. The language was strange, ancient and arcane, the very language of the earth. Such words Kherak had seldom heard; the sound held Power, the very essence of magic and rose like a song. She had not expected this, even with all her foretelling. Peering into the depths of the Opal, the images swirled like mist on the mountain and the shifting vision would not yield further. “You will reveal, my eyesight fades but my Sight is clear. You will reveal to me, as is my right and my Power.”
The humming Opal whined with a painful shrill, and tired Kherak fought the errant vision to do her bidding. The Shaman’s Focus shifted— partly in the Realm of Dreams and partly remaining in the mundane world. In Astral Sight the Opal loomed large and bright, a globe of dancing images woven in mist; before her rose a peak of reddish stone, run through with black veins arising from a lake of greenish water, and high in the peak an arch looked out across the lake, weathered but dark and foreboding. As she watched, the lake filled with blood, and screams echoed in her head. As quickly as it had appeared Kherak saw the half-dream flicker away to be replaced by a high-roofed chamber of rock, lit with crystal, and in the centre a red and black stone statue, circled by molten rock, runes glowing like fire about it. The strange words roared as the rolling of waves against stone, echoing in the Realm of Dreams as it did in her parlour, rattling the shelves from which items tumbled. Then the vision was gone.

Intrepid Women Book 8
BY KATHRYN JANE
Excerpt
(When Broughton, a seasoned security agent is not pleased about suddenly being partnered with a woman who not only had no experience in the field, but had once kissed him brainless, he slips up and now there has been another kiss…one she hasn’t asked for…exactly.)
Thoroughly pissed at himself, Broughton watched her march away. They were on an op. Working. And kissing her was so far out of line he needed his ass kicked. Did he dare apologize? Would that be making too much of a minor brushing of lips? He was a professional. He was technically her superior. Had no choice.
“Alex.”
She waited for him to catch up, and he was careful not to touch her. Not to put a hand on her shoulder and turn her to face him.
“I was out of line. Please accept my apology.”
She turned then. Stared at him like he was some kind of foreign blip on her radar screen. “Seriously?”
“I had no right to touch you. Especially on the job.”
“Broughton. Caleb. Let me spell this out and make it very clear. I’m interested in having a relationship with you. Little flyby kisses and the odd touch will not upset me, but they will lead me to believe you are also interested in a relationship. If that’s not the case? Yeah, keep your mouth and hands to yourself. Meanwhile, you should probably finish digging for snacks and get the rest to the Steed.”
She left him standing there with his insides at war. Caught between grinning like an idiot—because, gawd, he loved her attitude—or scrambling to shake loose from the hold she already had on his heart.
He could use a beer.
But a cookie would have to suffice. He dug one out and shoved the whole thing in his mouth, stuck the carton under his arm, and lugged the rest to the Steed.

A Dare to Defy Novel
BY SYRIE JAMES
Excerpt
“One first-class ticket for Liverpool, please.” Alexandra Atherton managed a smile for the ticket agent behind the window.
“One way or return?”
“One way.” Alexandra anxiously made her way across the busy train station, hardly able to believe she was doing this: running away, dressed in her maid’s old clothes, bound for Liverpool and the steamship that would take her home.
Her escape, she knew, would cause something of a scandal. Over the past few years, whenever her name or one of her sisters’ names had cropped up in the press, it was always followed by “the American heiress,” or “the daughter of multimillionaire banking tycoon Colis Atherton.” As if they were not actual people in their own right.
Alexandra hated to feed the gossip, but after last night, what choice did she have?
She had left a note explaining where she’d gone and why, which her maid Fiona was to “accidentally discover” later that afternoon. By then, it would be too late for her mother to prevent Alexandra from sailing. She just prayed that upon her reaching Liverpool, a berth would be available aboard the Maritime.
The train platform was alive with the clamor of movement and conversation. Gentlemen in black frock coats and ladies in elaborate plumed hats darted to and fro, checking the printed timetables, studying the large clock hanging from the rafters, purchasing apples from a vendor and papers from the newsstand. As Alexandra wove through the crowd, she heard a high-pitched voice at her elbow:
“Got a penny for a poor orphan?”
She paused. Before her stood a raggedly dressed, dirty little girl. Alexandra’s heart went out to the creature, who gazed up at her with wide eyes, her hair all in a tangle.
Alexandra wondered how a penny could possibly be of any help to a child in such need. Withdrawing her coin purse from her reticule, she offered the child a shilling. “Here you go, little one.” Suddenly, more children in similarly dirty clothing appeared and crowded around her.
“Mine!” cried a boy.
“No, mine!” cried another.
A grubby fist flashed out and snatched the shilling from Alexandra’s grasp. She couldn’t tell if it was the first girl who took it or one of the boys; indeed, she wasn’t entirely sure what happened next. All Alexandra knew was that multitudes of small, filthy hands were striking at her as young voices erupted in raucous shouts. Her coin purse was suddenly wrenched from her grasp, and a second later her handbag was gone.
“Wait! Give it back!” Alexandra cried, as the flock of children fled. “Help! Stop those children! They’ve stolen my bag!”
No one made any move to help her. Alexandra pushed her way through the crowd, racing after the children, but the ragamuffin band vanished as quickly as it had appeared. At the end of the platform, she stopped to catch her breath. The whole incident, she saw now, had been cleverly played, the efforts of a pack of urchins who preyed on unsuspecting travelers.
She searched for a policeman (what did they call them here? Bobbies?), but realized that even if one materialized, she couldn’t report the theft. She was dressed as a servant, in the act of running away.
Alexandra stood rooted to the spot, overwhelmed by a crushing sense of horror and disappointment as the depths of her predicament became clear to her. Her handbag was gone. It had held all her money as well as her train ticket. She hadn’t been able to take anything else with her, and now had nothing left except the clothes on her back. Clearly, there would be no trip to Liverpool today, and no voyage to New York.
Tears stung Alexandra’s eyes as she made her way back through the train station. What should she do now?
