Tea Time Memory for National Hot Tea Month
A Spooky Book Signing One Week After Stephen King's Event!
By Cal Orey
Over the decades I've been an author at dozens and dozens of book signings.
Some book events I've teamed with well-known people featured in my books. We were greeted by TV cameras, radio station hosts, a microphone and rows of people in the audience. Others, guide dogs to adoption cats upstaged me, the author, and nobody wanted me to speak out or sign a book. You just never know what's going to happen at a book signing--and the thing is, I continue to get booked and go on the road for the thrill of the unknown...
Last weekend on Saint Patrick’s Day, for instance, I took a leap of faith and drove over the snow shrouded mountain (with my Australian shepherd in tow and survival food) to attend a book discussion/signing for number six, the Healing Powers series tea tome. So much for lucky holidays and numbers, I thought. The roads were icy, cars were moving at a snail’s pace, and a couple of times I mumbled, “I’m turning back.”
Knowing I was stocked up on granola bars, salt and vinegar potato chips, bottled water, and canine chow seemed a bit calming for a snow day raining on my parade. While there were a few close skidding out of control moments, no “Misery” car crash for this food book series author. On the way home, I wondered, “Why didn’t I bake chewy cookies and bring tea?” A sobering flashback of hitchhiking in my twenties through
a blizzard in Wyoming with my black Lab (not a snow-loving dog) paid me a visit and reminded me, "This too shall pass." We survived--and this time around, too.
Back in the cozy cabin I made a fire, brewed a fresh cup of hot chamomile (two cups, actually), and cuddled with my action-oriented Aussie and zen-like Siamese. After a day of adventure, cravings for fresh coconut macaroons were on my mind. After all, it’s still winter-like weather in the Sierra and a home-baked cookie (filling the house with a sweet aroma) paired with an over-sized cup of my favorite beverage is super comforting and takes me to a place I love. This recipe is inspired by my new tea book The Healing Powers of Tea (infused with soul, thanks to pro chef recipes and gritty, heartwarming stories, and tearooms I visited both in and out of the country during research in Tealand).
Snowflake Cookies
5 tablespoons whole wheat flour (good for high altitude so cookies don’t spread in the oven)¼ cup granulated white sugar6 ounces sweetened condensed milk1 capful each almond extract and pure vanilla extract7-8 ounces (approximately 2 ½ cups) sweetened coconut, premium2 egg whites1 teaspoon lemon or orange rind (optional)Confectioners’ sugar (for dusting) (optional)
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, milk, extracts and coconut. Set aside. In a mixing bowl beat egg whites until stiff. Fold in coconut mixture. Add orange rind. Use 1/3 cup ice cream scoop or 1 teaspoon (shaped like a Hershey’s chocolate drop), and place cookie dough on a cookie sheet (parchment paper is nice to use to avoid sticking). Bake at 325 degrees for approximately 15-20 minutes or till bottoms are golden and cookies are firm. Remove immediately. Dust cookies with confectioners’ sugar. Makes about 10-12 cookies; depending on size. Store in airtight container and put in fridge or freezer.
(Tip: I cut the recipe in half because these cookies do contain sugar and fat. If you love chocolate, melt white or dark chocolate chips in the microwave for about 30 seconds, stir, 30 more seconds till melted. Dip on one side of the cookie or on the bottom.)
While the drive in a post-snowstorm wasn’t as horrific as I had thought it could be, the chips were super stress reducers, but herbal tea and warm homemade cookies would have been more soothing. Next time around during a drive in the snow or rain, I’ll pack a thermos of tea and snowflake cookies.

Barnes and Noble Book Signings...
Leaving Tahoe always makes me remember-I live in the mountainsBy Cal Orey
"I have measured out my life in
coffee spoons."
--T.S. Eliot
So, like countless times, I traveled off the hill from Lake Tahoe to Sacramento for a book signing.
My Healing Powers series was the featured guest and I was pleasantly surprised.
The Healing Powers of Honey drew attention like bees on a flowerCOFFEE ATTRACTS CUSTOMERS!... For years, my two popular books The Healing Powers of Vinegar and Olive Oil have been the workerbees or brainchild kids that work for me. I'm talking translated in more than a dozen languages, featured in major books clubs, in the Newsmax store, Walmart, and national magazines to radio talk show topics. But at the very elegant Roseville bookstore things changed! The mass market editions (same book, smaller books) didn't draw as much attention as COFFEE and CHOCOLATE. People talked to me about the health perks of both these neglected once bad foods gone good. It was delightful! Of course, the drawing we offered to win gourmet coffee and Godiva chocolate helped draw attention. And there were four winners!
Coming into SAC--a Mediterranean climate
BOOK SIGNINGS, PAST AND PRESENT... As noted in my last blog post, I've done dozens of book signings from a busy gathering at the Seattle, WA bookstore to Palmdale, CA (both geologist Jim Berkland and I were on local TV dishing quakes on the San Andreas). Some signings I read and have a sit down audience; other signings I meet and greet people and chat one-on-one. Both formats work for me. Yesterday, it was a combination. Actually, I will take a vow of silence today because I talked so much! I drank tea with honey to soothe my sore throat. The people who visited me were fascinating. Not only did they purchase my books, I enjoyed the vast variety of conversations with people and both genders of all ages.GOING BACK HOME--A SPOOKY SCI-FI DARKER CHALLENGE... Traveling with my adventurous sibling is always fun, sort of. Ironically, we got there easily following mapquest. On the way home, thanks to the eerie know-it-all lady's voice who led us on GPS Navigator--it was a segment out of a Twilight Zone episode. We were duped and got lost on the long, winding road in rural areas headed for Placerville. It happened once before but it was daytime. This time around it was in the dark. You're supposed to drive 20 mph but we were forced to go faster because of people behind us. Think amusement park ride without amusement. In retrospect it was exciting driving without lit roads or gridlock. I couldn't help but get images of sci-fi films I've seen when the characters get lost in remote regions and monsters appeared. It took us three hours to get back home unlike the two hours mapquest route that allowed me to be at the store an hour early.
We were going to stay in SAC but then I remembered-Zen was home alone!
I confess I did kennel my dog duo. They will get the pampering--extra walks, brushing (teeth and coat), treats and toys, and piped in music. I forget Simon's blanket and I didn't label their different dog chow... When I arrived home I knew it would be zen-like. My Siamese kitty Zen was waiting for me full of purring and snuggles. I got to sleep in until 10:30 AM. Bliss.
The dogs? It's 5-6 AM every day and midnight last call. Vacation day/night. But today in the afternoon I will help my boys escape and all will be back to normal. I pray the sensitive Aussie doesn't have attitude and piddle on my comfy, plush comforter form SAC. Psst. I haven't told them yet about my short trip to Reno bookstore for the next signing on January 3, nor my second longer Canada trip. Well, Santa will bring gifts and lots of love the next month and a half to make up for my absence. And we will all live happily ever after.

Tory never expected that a homework assignment would send her on the epic journey of a lifetime. Mrs. Finch is a teacher who provides Tory’s class with a rather strange assignment: crafting wool bracelets. It only gets more mysterious when Tory finds a piece of paper in the teacher’s bag containing a note about time travel. This sets off an incredible series of events which begins after she meets the handsome Tate during choir, and together the two fall back in time to 1864 where they meet Cade and Jeannette. Soon, their trip in time becomes more than an assignment but a way to help her new friends on their journey as they set out for America – but to help the ones in the past, they’ll need help from those in the present. In addition, after Tory discovers her school’s music program will end due to a lack of money, she works with her friends to devise a plan.
As a narrator, Tory is excited to learn more about history, and this is incorporated into her journey back in time. She has a genuine interest in wanting to know about the past; such as wanting to meet Clara Barton and see for herself all she did for history. Time travel elements are cleverly woven into aspects of Tory’s daily life as topics of conversation, and even in Mrs. Finch’s assignments. This interaction with the teacher brings the concept of time travel to Tory’s attention and is a catalyst for the adventures about to occur. The year they venture back to is 1864 when they first find themselves in a mine in Wales where they eventually meet Cade and Jeannette. At the center of these trips to the past is the concept of the American Dream which is what Tory’s new friends are striving to find. There’s a certain wistfulness in these characters which captures the various reasons that drove immigrants to want to come to America.
Historical attributes are incorporated to create the historic backdrop with references such as: smallpox, President Lincoln’s death, and the Civil War. The prominent theme explores the concept of “learning from history” by literally walking among these moments and seeing these experiences firsthand. Right from the start, the story draws you in with a prologue giving readers a teaser for the upcoming time travel antics which await. The story weaves between the present day and 1864 with specific goals for each time, to help their friends and to save the music program. The time travel genre crafts the past as if you’re being drawn into another world by treating history from a human perspective.
There is an intriguing exploration of the two time periods by comparing the modern worries of the teenagers about getting to practice, doing homework, and even going to a homecoming dance to Cade and Jeannette’s journey across the ocean in search of a better life. The story uses history as a moral center which helps grow Tory through these events shaping the reality she knows in the present. Tory’s behavior has this attitude which is carefree and stems from the pure excitement she has to learn and discover others’ stories. The formatting structure is unique as Tory’s imagination occasionally runs wild concocting whole scenarios about what other people are doing, putting herself in their shoes. The story meticulously uses dialogue to establish the time period by having those in the past use specific grammar which dates them and contrasts with the more modern way Tory and her friends talk. The modern references in the past are unique ways to incorporate humor into the story while not taking away from the seriousness of the circumstances or the relatability of the characters.
Part of what makes this time travel adventure special is how it connects you to history by both physically taking the characters back in time, and by having Tory read diary entries from the perspective of someone who lived that life. Romance adds charm to the story through the growing bond between Tory and Tate which is sincere and contains elements of first love. Their dynamic is wholesome and adds a certain amount of innocence to the story and pairs well with the love between Cade and Jeannette. Meeting and getting to know the people in the past gives them a personal connection to history and keeps readers invested in the various characters’ lives.
The adventure is a playful twist on time travel that serves as a clever way to encourage young adults to step into history. By connecting to people in the past, Tory is able to form sympathy and understanding for the plights and struggles they experienced. This is an example of how important it is to learn from history and to see that these were real people who lived these experiences.
Somewhere in Time: A Priceless Time Travel Tale by Suzy McKay and Cal Orey, MA is a charming tale of time travel and romance which takes two teenagers back in time where they experience the Civil War and understand the dream for a better future. It is a story which will resonate long after the book is finished, which is the sign of a truly enjoyable read.

STORM? Stock Up with Non-Perishable Superfoods
storm pantry, stock up with superfoods
Cal Orey / Special to the Tribune Store up food stuff before another storm. It will give you peace of mind.
So, why exactly do people think stocking a pantry with a tin of Spam or SpaghettiOs in a can are basic ER staples? It’s the 21st century.
How do you put together a nutritious ER stash? Go to the Mediterranean diet! The fact is, when disaster strikes, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol numbers is vital as stress soars. This heart-healthy regimen contains vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and extra-virgin olive oil with fish/seafood and fermented dairy products. Beverages include water, coffee, and tea. It’s a perfect plan for an emergency pantry.
Superfoods to the Rescue
1. Fruits. Opt for canned fruit packed in water or unsweetened natural juices and dried fruit with no sugar added.
2. Vegetables. Russet and Sweet potatoes have a long shelf life. Opt for canned (low-sodium) varieties and all-natural marinara sauce – a versatile staple.
3. Grains. Breads, oats, whole grain cereals and pasta.
4. Fish & Seafood. Consider water-packed tuna and salmon.
5. Eggs, Poultry, Cheese and Yogurt, Milk. Try powdered eggs or scramble egg mix. Opt for canned chicken or turkey. Soft cheese like Brie doesn’t have to be refrigerated, nor does powdered yogurt or powdered milk.
6. Nuts, Seeds and Legumes. Good protein sources are beans, nuts, nut butters, and sesame seeds.
7. Herbs and Spices. For taste and nutrients use basil, cinnamon, garlic, pepper, and turmeric.
8. Meats and Sweets. Try canned all-natural beef. Stock honey and all-natural protein bars.
9. Water and Wine. Bottled water is essential (and wine in moderation is calming).
Picks for Annoying Ailments
Healthful superfoods can quell common conditions (if you have heat, cold or if you don’t).
• Cold/flu: You can’t go wrong with chicken soup to soothe a sore throat. Try nutritious organic brands in quart brick packs rather than high-sodium canned varieties.
• Fatigue: Look for a balance of lean protein and whole-food carbs to maintain stable blood sugar and energy levels. Go for water-packed canned tuna on whole grain crackers or almonds with a fruit cup.
• Insomnia: Herbal teas can be of help when sleep is evasive, as can a glass of milk, or a hard-boiled egg. Both contain tryptophan, a protein that can help induce slumber.
• Stomach woes: Grab Ginger ale or peppermint tea, both can ease queasiness.
• Stress: Try dark chocolate for antioxidant properties and brain-calming benefits.
In a nutshell: Before disaster strikes – go shopping for people and pets. Forage for a flavorful, well-balanced ER stockpile for health and peace of mind.

SOULMATES WITH PAWS--BEST SELLER STATUS AGAIN!
Currently, PAWS is ranking in the top 100 Kindle books on Amazon. Genre? Pet Essays! Take a look and read a SAMPLE. It's a timeless book to love. The best articles gleaned from magazines that go back 30 years!
One thing is absolutely clear; that is Cal Orey is a pet lover extraordinaire. She sums up the theme of her book in her final sentence, “Soulmates with Paws is a tribute to the four-leggers in my life, past and present, and throughout the nation and around the globe. It’s the human-companion animal bond that is universal and one that connects us as whole unity on the planet.”
As a renown award-winning author, Cal Orey’s reputation of tackling subjects with an abundance of facts and insights proceeds this book in many ways. It was my pleasure to enjoy the vast details of her personal accounts, the array of scientific facts, and surprising spiritual aspects of dog and cat relationships within a diverse style of original writing, published article reprints, blogpost excerpts, and a forward by Stanley Coren, Ph.D., author of The Intelligence of Dogs and How to Speak Dog.
As for spiritual relationships, she writes, “After a cat dies, they have a telepathic reunion with their owner, according to telepathic animal communicator Raphaela Pope of Berkeley, Calif. That means cat owners may have direct communication beyond what’s normal with their cats.” Here, I thought it was only me that experienced this when my cat died.
Pet owners who understand their furry-friends all have seen remarkable situations of the animal’s awareness alerting their owner to some impending threat; whether it be a fire, an earthquake, or even the malintent of other people posing danger. The ability for dogs and cats to “find their way home” after being lost or when traveling tends to hint of high-sensory awareness of sight and smell and beyond, to some perception of the Earth’s magnetic fields, as was discovered in bees and birds, plus other mammals, where their brain cells contain magnetized iron particles which cells act like built-in compasses.
Although peppered with extraordinary facts about dogs and cats, Cal Orey’s main thrust is in her storytelling. There are many stories of people and pets, doing amazing things. These stories make up the icing on the factual content of the book. Written in a friendly “fireside” fashion, readers will love each of the many tales throughout this book where she tells of her exploits, her pet loves and losses, and get to know her as a person with a heart, seeking ways to unselfishly help others.
A section about homeless people caring for pets points out an interesting observation by Richard Avanzino, president of the San Francisco SPCA. “Because homeless people have this unique bond and special relationship, in many cases, the animals are better cared for than they take care of themselves. And that’s because the animal has stood by their side when society and the world and human beings have discarded them.”
The book contains a dozen quizzes for readers, each enabling them to determine aspects of their own personality, such as being a dog-person or a cat-person, and which breed of dog best suits their personality. Each chapter has appropriate quotes from famous people. And talking about famous people, a chapter is dedicated to many stories of actors, celebrities and authors with their pets. For example, Doris Day started an animal rescue charity and of course, John Steinbeck’s many books referencing his animal companions.
As a whole, Soulmates with paws: A Collection of Tales & Tails is a book that should be promoted on all fronts, especially in mental and physical well-being practices, as powerfully illustrated through personal experiences and relatable concepts. It is without doubt one of those texts that beg to be read time and again, to dig up the nuances you may have missed during the first reading.
