Bring on the Butter! The New "Health Food"

superior flavor and texturePass the butter, please! Several years ago, after I penned the first edition of The Healing Powers of Olive Oil, I confess I bought butter. I ate it on the sly. I could have written a real-life book on Confessions of a Butter Eater.              One day I told my dear friend/olive oil producer’s wife Gemma Sciabica, “I like to bake with it.”            She darted, “It’s animal fat.”             And, of course, being a health author and devout health nut I listened to the women decades my senior, and sensed she was right, sort of. After all, olive oil has a record of being heart healthy, and can add  years to your life. But I continued to buy, eat, and cook/bake with rich European style butter. Ironically, both my blood pressure and weight maintain the same healthful numbers, I rarely get sick and enjoy boundless energy. So, I have pondered, “Is real butter, like dark chocolate and coffee, good for you used in moderation?            Desperately seeking to be thin, too many of us have gone fat-free “crazy,” but haven’t shed the unwanted pounds. Worse, some people have gained weight on no-fat diets. The reason is that fat-free foods contain sugar and calories, but we gobble them up thinking that they’re okay because they’re fat free. I recall years ago, I’d buy and “healthy” margarine with less calories. Not only did it taste like cardboard, I rebelled and became a closet butter eater.

            How much butter should you eat?  It’s a no-brainer you’re not going to stay lean and heart healthy if you eat a stick of butter daily. But note, if you don’t eat enough fat, such as butter, you’ll end up unsatisfied nd eventually you’ll go off your diet plan. That’s why you should incorporate a small amount of fats such as butter into your daily diet. Past research compares a low-fat diet with a high-fat diet (mostly from good fats). After time, high-fat eaters lost pounds, low-fat dieters gained pounds. The reason, according to researchers: Fatty foods, such as avocado, chocolate nuts, olive oil, and butter curb hunger by satisfying the desire for some fat.            But I didn’t need a study to give me permission to eat butter. For several years to present-day, I incorporated flavorful butters with olive oils in sautéing vegetables to baking muffins. Not only did my dishes taste better by pairing the oil and fat, but I am hardly alone. I notice chefs in the Mediterranean countries back in the 20th century combined butter and olive oil, too.             Enter my world of butter, a by-product of milk. That means it’s 80 percent fat with the rest water and milk solids. Butter is a mix of fats: saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated. It boasts some calcium, potassium, and plenty of vitamin A.
            The World of Butter: Good butter can help make great sauces, cakes, pastry, can and cookies.  Butter can be salted or sweet, and chefs favor unsalted butter for its mild flavor.  Speaking of taste, European style “cultured” butters are what I favor and use in my recipes. True, they are higher in fat, but for taste’s sake, it’s worth it...

Minted Citrus Tea Cookies* * *2/3 cup flour                                                               ¾ teaspoon baking powder1/8 teaspoon salt                                                         1/3 cup butter, softened1/3 cup granulated sugar                                            ½ cup powdered sugar1 ½ teaspoons grated lemon peel                                1 ½ teaspoons grated lime peel3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh                              ¼ cup extra light olive oilmint or 1 tablespoon finely chopped                           1 eggrosemary                                                                 sugarMix flour, baking powder and salt in small mixing bowl; set aside. Cream butter, granulated sugar and confectioners’ sugar, lemon and lime peels and mint in large mixing bowl. Blend in olive oil and eggs. Stir in flour mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours. Preheat oven to 350 F.Shape dough into 3/5-inch balls; place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheet. Dip tops in sugar; place on baking sheet, sugared side up. Flatten to 1/8-inch thickness with fork or bottom of drinking glass dipped in granulated sugar. Bake 7 to 11 minutes, or until cookies appear set in center. Carefully remove cookies from pan immediately. Cool on wire rack.(Courtesy: North American Olive Oil Association.)

Friday the 13th Doesn't Spook Me

Today is Friday the 13th, a day full of plenty of superstitions that can make people want to hide underneath the bed covers and not get up until V-Day tomorrow. But this year I'm not so sure I believe it's going to be a spooky day...

WAKING UP TO MENDING FENCES... I had a dream this morning that when the fence fixers arrived in the morning the wood in my garage wasn't suitable. It turns out my premonition was spot-on. No worries. The handymen got the right wood to do the job. The broken fence in a few areas are due to tired snow plowing men (before the megadrought) and the big tree that fell on the cabin during the West Coast superstorm in December.
But today is Friday the 13th and it's in the sixties--warm for Lake Tahoe in February. The sun feels warm despite thoughts, "This isn't normal. Early spring ahead."  Sure, it's a bad omen for a ski resort town but it is reality. The West Coast is drying up and we might as well deal with it.

DOG PULLS A MARLEY... Yesterday not today on the day when weird things are supposed to hit, my Aussie pulled a Marley. A gate was put up in a room to give me a bit more control of a pup and senior canine. Big mistake. I put a leash on my energetic Australian Shepherd, 55 pounds, and he pulled me forward. Sadly, the new gate worked for his escape and not mine. I fell flat on my face. What's odd, a Victoria's Secret rep whom I purchased Sorels from for sierra winter that never came, told me via phone (after I told her I work psychic networks) that I would fall this season and hurt my right wrist and arm. Right she was despite I fought her negative forecast.

On the upside, when I stood up in the hallway I only saw a cut left hand, felt a bump on my head and aching neck, upper back and right arm. After complaining of pain (even called the doctor but was told I'm "healthy" and no need for Ms. Hypochondriac aka author known to fabricate ailments to be seen), I forced myself to go to the resort hot tub. And today, Friday the 13th? The aches and pains are not as bad as I envisioned. Go figure. Funny, I assumed the clothes saleswoman saw me falling outdoors on black ice, not indoors. Gone gate.

JUST ANOTHER FRIDAY, SORT OF... Well, between you and me, a few strange things have happened. I received an e-mail from one hotel confirming my arrival to Washington next week. Uh, no--it's next month. A quick fix and it's all good. Plus, the tree that fell on my home didn't happen on Friday the 13th--and that was eerie, real surreal stuff that you think will never happen to you and then when it does you're dazed and confused: "Why me?" Gone tree.

Looking forward to rain, cloudy skies
Tomorrow is on my mind, after all, it is a romantic day, especially if you're in a happy relationship. Unfortunately, my clients usually are not. They cry infidelity, not enough or too much attention, can't find a soul mate or are unhappy with the mate at hand. They believe I'm a magical guru but I remind each and every caller that I am not God--but my track record is rather surprising. So, I'll probably be on the phone. A lot. Yes, it's my job to analyze if he/she will come through on this day. Or not. 

And here come the rush of calls. Oh my. So many men are not coming through for their Valentine. This is a red flag. I've had three calls in less than 30 minutes--all about men AWOL. Sad. I do try and leave my clients with some prediction that is upbeat rather than just say: "I see you falling and breaking an arm." That makes me feel better. It's not fun to be dumped by man or dog! I speak from experience.

Me? I'm happy to be in love with my two dogs and cat. It was a warm and fuzzy feeling this morning to wake up to the the trio surrounding me. I felt safe. I felt content. I felt happy. So, the question is: Does Friday the 13th spook me today? Not this time, but there are two more coming up in 2015. As the famous quote in Three Days of the Condor: "The night is still young." Maybe after the fence is mended I'll go out and buy myself a box of gourmet chocolates for the feel-good endorphin high and count my blessings that this Friday the 13th will not haunt me.

Author's Monday a Roller Coaster Ride

Monday's ChildI am a Monday's child; born at 8:55 P.M. Usually, I love this day as much as autumn. Not so much today. After I was awakened early by my Brittany and Aussie (Sunday they let me savor seven hours of sleep), I was welcomed by an unpleasant surprise. My beloved pleco Oscar didn't look like himself. When our eyes met I sensed something was wrong. Very wrong. My dear fish had passed. It was sudden. I was devastated...
I know, I know, "It's just a fish." But no. I am a fish person. I used to write for Tropical Fish Hobbyist.  Tending to an aquarium takes time, effort, love, cash, and patience. And once you get a balanced home for your fish it's a wonderful feeling. So, when you lose one dear fish (or more) it can take a toll on your mind, body, and spirit as it did mine today.


A new addition to my aquariumLIFE GOES ON... After hours of researching "What did I do wrong?" I still don't have the answer. This afternoon I took in a water sample to the fish people. All good.  My goldfish are healthy and happy. Why did the fish gods take Oscar? I may never know. 
So, as I grieve, I brought home a new noname pleco. He and I made eye contact but we do not have the fish-human bond as of yet. It will take time. But I feel better knowing my aquarium is up to par yet I miss sweet Oscar. A lot.

TIME HEALS LOSS AND HEARTACHE...
A month ago today I should have been in Washington. But due to a nightmarish bathroom renovation my trip was postponed until next month when I will be the author signing Healing Powers Series books at the Bellevue, WA Barnes and Noble bookstore. After, it's on up into British Columbia for book research.

relocating to a big city
Yesterday, I printed out my itineraries and e-tickets. Appointments for me and my fur kids have been made before I get on a jet plane. I know it's more than a month away, but my anticipation is soaring. I enjoyed the trip to Quebec last September more than life itself. This time around I'm sensing it will be an adventure that will make me smile before, during, and after. 


OLIVE OIL AND VINEGAR BOOKS... The Healing Powers of Olive Oil, Revised and Updated is beginning to draw attention and books are selling. When I watch Food Network every day I watch super chefs pair butter, oils and olive oil. This makes me feel good because it's what I do in the book and dish why it works. 
I've begun working on the third edition of The Healing Powers of Vinegar. Last week I received vinegar(s) on my doorstep. I'm excited to try the different varieties in cooking and baking. It's an honor to be asked to perfect this book that was first written back in 1999. Actually, VINEGAR has had a long shelf life as my former editorial consultant predicted it would. How did he know that?

PREDICTIONS AND PSYCHICS... I am pleased to announce that I earned back my top weekly psychic title for one of the networks. Also, many of my clients have called me to give updates. The majority of callers have told me I was right. And that makes me feel good. Of course I'm not God but I do have strong intuitive powers and when I team my sixth sense with tools, more times than not the forecasts come true. 
What's more, yes, I do read for myself. Many of my predictions have come to fruition for this year. So, as we head into mid February, and leave the Mercury Retrograde three week period behind, I envision good things on the horizon.

EARTH CHANGES...  As I still find ruined items, time has healed my two dogs and cat from the renovation road that I endured. I regained the pounds I lost as well as feel centered once again. In retrospect, I was blindsided by ignorance and being naive. I truly believed a projected two-five day bathroom remodel would be a cake walk. I was clueless to how much stress it caused. It was like being inside one of those glass snow globes and having someone turn it upside down and shake it while laughing. I will never forget the ordeal. But this weekend I got to enjoy having my life back as I once knew it.

A:  Nutrient-dense grub! Forget cold medicine in a box if a pesky health condition comes my way. I have stopped taking vitamins but I do indulge in foods (such as organic milk and whole grain cereals) infused with vitamin D, vitamin C, omegas, and other good for you stuff.
Q: Carbs or protein?A:  Good and yummy carbs! I'm talking about dishing up fresh fruit, vegetables, grains, and my latest favorite are salted bagels (probably not super healthy but in moderation and piled with veggies it's doable), and fresh baguettes like I was served in Quebec. 
In my opinion, eating our animal friends is not essential to staying healthy. Can't do it. In fact, I'm having difficulty consuming fish. The mercury warnings don't help, nor the butcher not telling me where the fishies come from. Worse, I've fallen in love with Oscar, my plecko who tends to my fish aquarium. Carb power!

Soup's Ready! (Bring on the Butter and Baguettes!)

February and slain (rain and snow) around the sierras is a perfect time for hearty vegetable soup. Think plenty of fresh, seasonal vegetables and stock for a chunky semi-homemade soup. Garlic and onions, carrots and celery—and fresh tomatoes—with  plenty of pasta can make your pot of soup on the stovetop a crowd pleaser in the kitchen and comfort food in your bowl on the table for lunch or dinner. Last week I came down with quickie cold-flu two days after swimming, walking the dogs early in the morning and late at night. It was rest, juice, herbal tea—and store-bought vegetable soup that helped make the aches and sniffling not seem so bad. But if I had more energy I would have dished up my homemade brand. Using garlic and onion paired with lots of veggies put into a big pot with organic store bought broth was amazing. Not only was it easy, the aroma in my cabin was sublime.
Fresh Chunky Vegetable Soup 1 tbs. extra virgin olive oil or European style butter ¼ cup yellow onion, 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 carton (32 ounces) organic vegetable broth 2 cups mixed fresh vegetables, chopped (broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, green bell pepper, jicama, radish) 1 ½ cups uncooked whole grain rotini Sea Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1/3 cup fresh spinach, chopped 5 Roma tomatoes, peeled, chopped 1/2 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese (garnish)
In a skillet, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat, add onion and garlic. Sauté for a few minutes. Pour into a large pot. Add broth and bring to a boil. Add vegetables. Bring to a boil again then put on low heat. In another pot boil pasta for several seven minutes until cooked. Add pasta and tomatoes to vegetable mixture.  Stir in spinach.  Simmer for about 10 minutes. Serve hot sprinkled with Parmesan cheese and slices of warm whole grain bread and butter. Serves 6.
I love this soup—when I’m well (I froze some in case I get a cold this winter). Not only is it easy to put it together, it’s easy on the eyes and palate. It’s also the time to blast soup myths: You can use fresh tomatoes; forget canned goods. Some folks say broccoli and spinach in your soup can create a bitter taste—there is none left so I disagree. 
Follow the store bought broth box directions and do not dilute. Add any of your favorite herbs for extra flavor. Making semi-homemade soup can be whipped up and dished up in less than 30 minutes. It’s not your mom’s soup—it’s fresh and with your stamp on it for the 21stcentury.

Aussie Pulls Off a Magical Feat!

Tomorrow marks two years that I've been blessed to be owned by a Blue Merle Aussie named Skyler (means "protector").  In more than 700 days I have fallen in love with this canine more than I ever thought possible. After all, he was adopted to be our "healing" dog when we lost a dear Brittany too young to a fluke neurological disorder. But this Australian Shepherd came to the rescue and healed my family--both two and four leggers...

Centered after a Sunday swimBEAUTIFUL SUNDAY UNTIL...Today, after a much over due swim at the resort pool (all mine), a dog walk for my Brittany and Aussie it was back home. Now this Type-A breed is like having a two-year-old human and if they are not busy or too quiet you may be in for an unpleasant surprise.

About an hour ago, I thought, "He's walked, fed, has done his business. I want to chill with Zen, my kitty and watch the Kitten Super Bowl." So, I left the dog duo out in the living room and escaped to another room to relax. But after about 10 minutes I didn't hear a sound. Not one.  I walked out to see what Skye was doing.  I wish I was on Candid Camera. But it was real life.

DOGGIE DRAMA: My beloved pooch pulled a neurotic Marley moment! He ripped off the sticky tag underneath a leather recliner. Worse, the large white square paper stuck onto his furry left paw! Once I put his big foot into my hand I knew my fresh BP (124/70/70) was history. What to do? "I'll cut it (the paper not paw) off with a pair of scissors!" Hold the phone. I recall vet techs told me too many times dog people bring their pets in for attempts to cut hair and it ends up a severe cut and not for the faint at heart for dog or owner. 

Next idea. A hot water soaked towel.  Didn't work. At all.  So, I called my sibling. Being an action-oriented Fire Sun Sign, I knew he'd try and pull it off quickly. No emotion. Just do it. That wasn't going to happen in my dog's lifetime. "Go," I said and realized we were on our own.  Help?

HELLO, E.R.?  "Uh, this isn't really a life or death emergency but..." I began explaining our dilemma. My Aussie has a big chunk of sticky "fly paper" stuck on his foot. What do I do?" The woman on the phone in Carson City, 25 miles away from my cabin in Tahoe, was calm. 
She asked, "Do you have any friends in your neighborhood?" 
I answered: "No, not anyone I trust. The teacher next door isn't a dog person. The dental girl across the street? She's not a chair side assistant. Vacation rentals--vacant. We are flying solo."
We got through the "neuter" challenge
"Well," the understanding voice said, "Do you have an Elizabethan collar?" 
"Yeah. He wore it after the NEUTER. We both (intense and workerbees) were on sedatives for a week. We both are very excitable and have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) when something happens we don't like and we try and try to regain control."
"I get it," she said. "But if you use the cone and see your vet first thing in the morning they can easily remove the tape."
"Does that mean we won't be sleeping tonight?" I asked.  "Oh, I forgot. He will take it off within 15 minutes."
"It will be uncomfortable for both of you," she told me in a straightforward manner which I appreciated. Images of Skye on a mission to remove the sticky paper were haunting me. Would he bite off his paw?


MY DOG IS EXTRAORDINARY: "My Aussie is smart," I boasted as I scrutinized the huge white square of paper stuck on his white paw. (It seemed bigger than life itself as though it were growing like a sci-fi creature. It was our enemy and taking on its own personality to destroy our evening of quietude.)
She agreed this dog breed is highly intelligent. I liked the phone lady. Her energy was calming as we continued to troubleshoot the culprit at paw. Then, I screamed. I screamed out loud again like like I do when something unpredictable hits.

I interrupted her next words of forecasts of the worst case scenario--from getting the sticky paper stuck on his lip and face: "Oh my God! I cannot believe what just happened. Guess what?"
"What? Is he okay?" The voice inquired with genuine curiosity. She was in the drama mode with me.
"Skyler removed the paper all by himself!  It's amazing!" I picked up the large square of paper off the carpet. "Skye! You are such a good and intelligent boy! I love you so much!" I hugged my dog and kissed his nose many times and his paws. Then, I thanked the woman on the phone who was there for us and witnessed a "magical feat" by another gifted Aussie.
And now, the Siamese Zen, Brittany Simon, and my Aussie with dog smarts are watching the Kitten Bowl with me. The moral of the story? You cannot leave an Australian Shepherd alone because it will find a job or get into trouble. Caveat: I do believe in God and I believe he was looking out for us today and decided to cut us a break. Skyler rests. I will let sleeping dogs lie (until he surprises me with the next unexpected mishap).

CHAPTER 1 My mother's trip to Europe

Mediterranean cuisine
I was born and raised in Umbria, Italy on my family’s ancient olive plantation. My father was half Irish, a fair skinned, red-headed stocky and sturdy hardworking olive grove farmer. My mother, an Italian petite, dark-haired woman with piercing blue eyes ran a charming bed and breakfast cottage. She served and sold homemade bread, cheese, vegetables, fruit and olive oil. The days were long but our fruits of labor were worth the efforts for the well-being of our family, the community, and tourists who liked our cozy, rustic lifestyle in the Mediterranean.
One November overcast cool morning in the kitchen with my mom I learned the art of baking drop scones. I forgot to include the pale yellow liquid gold.  My detail-oriented mother, a seasoned baker, mumbled “tsk-tsk” as she poured the “liquid gold” into the thick batter. When the scones were baked, and fruity scent filled the air of the kitchen she dipped a warm scone full of olives and nuts into a beautifully decorated olive oil dish.  She smiled and handed me the treat as a truce. 

In the real world, this rural picturesque scene is a dream of mine.  Sure, I would love to be 

The suburbs, my link to trees and fruit orchards an olive farmer’s daughter, living in Europe. The truth of the matter it’s not the real story of my roots. I grew up in the suburbs of San Jose, California, a place once touted for its plentiful fruit orchards. But that doesn't mean I'm not down to earth and a devout proponent of nature's liquid gold...

¼ cup olive oil                                                        2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
¼ cup fresh lemon juice                                        1 teaspoon Greek seasoning
½ teaspoon oregano                                              ½ teaspoon salt
Kabobs
¾ lb. large raw shrimp, shelled and                    12 canned extra small artichoke heart          
deveined*                                                              quarters
12 large pitted kalamata olives                            2 tablespoons crumbled feta cheese,                                                                                optional
Combine olive oil, lemon peel, lemon juice, Greek seasoning, oregano and salt in large plastic food storage bag; flex to mix well. Add shrimp and seal; toss to coat. Marinate in refrigerator at least 4 hours or overnight, turning occasionally.

Heat grill to medium direct heat. Meanwhile, add artichoke pieces and olives to marinade; toss to coat. Thread shrimp, artichokes and olives on 4 12-inch to 14-inch skewers (or place in grill basket). Grill covered 5 to 8 minutes or until shrimp are opaque, turning once or twice. Remove to serving platter; sprinkle with feta cheese, if desired. Variation: If desired, substitute 3 boneless skinless chicken breast halves for shrimp. Cut chicken into 1 ½ inch pieces. Marinate and grill as directed for shrimp. Serves 4.

Drop 6 Lbs.+ in 2 Days with Olive Oil and Vinegar

Here is a perfect tried-and-true quickie jump-start diet plan that'll help you drop six pounds or more (depending upon your weight) in 48 hours. This quickie diet plan is found in the Healing Powers series: The Healing Powers of Vinegar, my NEW The Healing Powers of Olive Oil, and The Healing Powers of Honey. Pre-Spring 2 Day Olive Oil and Vinegar Detox Diet

Breakfast: Fresh berries (no limit)Lunch: 4 ounces fresh white-meat turkey Greens with dressing made of fresh parsley, 1 tablespoon each virgin olive oil and apple cider vinegar, and spices to taste1 cup fresh berriesDinner:
6 to 8 ounces fresh flounder, sole, or salmon
1 cup fresh berries
COOL NOTES:• Drink a minimum of six 8-ounce glasses of water with fresh lemon throughout the day and/or herbal teas.
• Check with your doctor before starting this or any diet.
• For an extra healthful edge to this diet plan, every day before each meal, drink 1 tablespoon of Bragg apple cider vinegar  in an 8-ounce glass of water. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of honey, if desired. 
A bonus tip: Exercise at least 20-30 minutes each day.

Did you know olive oil isn’t the only healing oil that provides home cures that can work for you? There are so many different cooking oils with amazing do-it-yourself cures. Sure, some of these remedies are folk lore, others like coconut oil (touted by celebs that use it for a variety of its health perks) come with anecdotal evidence, and some such as canola oil are backed up by a stamp of approval from medical researchers. Superfoods/recipes to lose lbs year round with oils and butter! After I wrote the first edition of The Healing Powers of Olive Oil, I used extra virgin olive oil for home cures, including an earache, cracked skin, to a spider bite and wasp sting—all culprits that have paid me a visit while I enjoy the mountain lifestyle. These days, my kitchen pantry is stocked with other oils, too, including coconut oil and macadamia nut oil—that can and does the job.Pairing healing oils inside the body and outside the body is the best way to get the best results from head to toe. So, take a look at some of these healing oils including almond oil, coconut oil, flaxseed oil, hemp seed oil, macadamia nut oil, red palm oil, sesame oil and canola oil that can be used in cooking but also as home cures. Do consult with your health care practitioner before using any new healing oil for an ailment. 1. BLOAT (Beating water weight with the best oil) Back pain is a pain but feeling and looking bloated isn’t just a cosmetic woes Years ago, I wrote an article on fat-burning foods. Popcorn was one of the 14 edibles. It’s high in fiber, low-fat,  low-cal, no trans fat especially if you lose the fake butter and salt. It’s a super stress relieving food because of the crunch, and it can help you to get rid of extra water weight, too.What Oil Remedy to Use: Drizzle 1 or 2 tablespoons of warmed up red palm oil on top of 2 cups of air popped popcorn. Why You’ll Like It:  Pairing red palm oil with nutritious popcorn is going to give you a double punch of nutrients. This oil contains antioxidant vitamins A and E. Plus, it has a buttery flavor that’ll titillate your taste buds and combined with fiber-rich popcorn will fill you up not out.  As a popcorn lover, I did give this healing oil recipe a go and discovered it was different, and gave it an exotic flair.

2. BODY FAT (Fighting pudge by enjoying fatty oils) Did you know extra weight and body fat can trigger back pain? It can. And adding good fat to your diet can help you lose unwanted fat and lower your body mass index.  Move over olive oil like avocado oil and macadamia oil can to help you to burn fat and lose unwanted pudge. These oils boost your energy, too. and boast fat-burning components such as CCK, a hormone that signals your brain that your brain that you're full and should stop eating. Good fats also contain omega fatty acids which are essential for fat metabolism. Coconut oil contains anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Also, unlike bad tasting over-the-counter remedies, coconut oil tastes good.4. CRACKED FEET  (Creating smooth feet with a natural oil) You may think canker sores are painful, but if you ever fall victim to alligator skin-like rough, red, weathered, feet with crevices—you may rather deal with the mouth malady. Cracked feet are an unsightly cosmetic problem, but crevices can turn into health issues, too. Inflammation can lead to pain when walking, wearing shoes, and even to an infection. This, in turn, means a small problem like cracked feet end up being a big problem. Dry skin on the soles of your feet, are more common in colder months where there is a lack of humidity. What Oil Remedy to Use: Try using two coconut capsules topically once a day, preferably before bedtime. Break open each capsule and rub the creamy oil generously on the bottoms of both feet. Cover with 100 percent cotton socks. Repeat daily. Why You’ll Like It: Coconut oil is a known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It can help hydrate and soothe painful skin irritations, including cracked feet. Not only does it work, but the texture and aroma of this oil is a pleasant surprise and a miracle worker.5. FATIGUE (Ending lack of energy by consuming oil-rich foods) Enjoying a healthy crowning glory is nice, and feeling tired is not nice no matter how thick and shiny your locks may be. Sweet coconut oil can help give you a pick-me-up. It’s a healthy saturated fat—touted to be a natural source of medium chain triglycerides, which are gobbled up by your body to give it a boost of energy.What Oil Remedy to Use: Add one or two teaspoons in a cold, fresh seasonal fruit smoothie. Why You’ll Like It: If you’re trying to lose weight, coconut oil can help energize you and provide a feeling of fullness. This, in turn means if you use it in a smoothie, stir-fry, or even a small baked muffin (see Recipes Section) you will get physical and burn off calories and fat and not feel deprived.6. INSOMNIA  (Getting shut-eye by including oil in your diet) Bites will heal but if you don’t get adequate sleep your well-being will suffer and be worse the a bug bite. Sleep restores and replenishes your body and mind. Lack of sleep depletes energy and frazzles nerves. And lack of adequate zzzs may compromise your immune system and lower your resistance to illness.While I often can fall asleep within five minutes to the purr of a cat, I am human and have fallen victim to the cycles of sleeplessness. Some doctors believe PMS and menopause (yes, I’m a survivor of both female culprits) my cause shifts in hormonal balances and trigger a bout of insomnia. For moderate insomnia, healing oils combined with good bedtime habits can be a godsend if you don’t want to watch infomercials all night long.What Oil Remedy to Use:  Try a light dinner with a stir-fry or ice cream with sesame oil and lavender olive oil. Why You’ll Like It: Lavender relaxes the nervous system. It’s calming and relaxing. Sesame oil is high omega-6s. It’s not only a natural sedative used in food, if you are lucky enough to have a partner willing to give you  massage, lavender oil and sesame oil can penetrate the skin and help relax you, too.
