"I’m always soft for you, that’s the problem. You could come knocking on my door five years from now..."

“I’m always soft for you, that’s the problem. You could come knocking on my door five years from now and I would open my arms wider and say ‘come here, it’s been too long, it felt like home with you.”

how did people begin coming across your work before you had a significant following? is patient consistency the key?

I don’t really know, I didn’t anticipate how big this would become. I think part of it is consistency and part of it is also writing the sort of thing that people want to read and share. I know that’s somewhat cynical but people like things they identify with and when I started that’s what I was writing. I also believe part of it was just who I was, a Muslim girl writing about love and sex and that was new and exciting I guess.

What does "hit the body like a season" mean?

It’s a line in a poem by Ocean Vuong. I’m not entirely sure what it means, I just know that when I read it it made me shudder

"When you’re an artist, nobody ever tells you or hits you with the magic wand of legitimacy. You have..."

“When you’re an artist, nobody ever tells you or hits you with the magic wand of legitimacy. You have to hit your own head with your own handmade wand. And you feel stupid doing it. There’s no “correct path” to becoming a real artist. You might think you’ll gain legitimacy by going to university, getting published, getting signed to a record label…[but] it’s all in your head. You’re an artist when you say you are. And you’re a good artist when you make somebody else experience or feel something deep or unexpected.”
