My Favourite Reads of 2019 | #FiveStarReviews
Season's Greetings, everyone! This time of year is usually action-packed for most regardless of whether you celebrate any of the many holidays in the season. So, thanks for stopping by my blog today. I officially began doing reading challenges two years ago (2017). I started small, because at some point, life and laziness happened and my reading habit took a hit. The reading challenge on Goodreads helped me keep up with reading since I had a tangible goal.
After three years of doing this, I've managed to exceed my target! Twice I'm thrilled to say, I've read over 37 books this year (not including beta reads). I know, this number is nowhere near what some of you über readers have clocked, but this is huge for me. I've actually had to update my target a couple of times just because I've read more than I'd expected.
The highlight of my reading year was the discovery of Kennedy Ryan when I read Hook Shot. Less than halfway through the book, I knew it would be my favourite read of the year and the author would make it to my auto-buy authors. It came as no surprise when, later in the year, her book, Long Shot, won a RITA award, though I hadn't read the book at the time. I've since read that and three other books by her (four, if you count anthologies).
Anyway, so for the first time, I feel like I've read enough books to write this post. This is a compilation of my absolute favourite reads of 2019 (in the order I read them):His Defiant Princess by Nana Prah
Princess Amira Saene has always done the right thing when it came to her beloved Kingdom of Bagumi. Yet her unorthodox online relationship with a man across the sea has derailed her from cultural norms. After a year of communicating, the man she’s developed feelings for comes to visit.Jake Pettersen never thought he’d meet the woman of his dreams, much less online. Flying thousands of miles to West Africa to meet her verifies that the feelings he’s developed are real. Too bad her family doesn’t think he’s worthy of her.
When Jake learns that Amira has been betrothed, he must decide whether to fight for her or accept the loss for the sake of her homeland. Is their happiness worth the devastation of her country?
My review of His Defiant Princess
A Princess In Theory by Alyssa ColeFrom acclaimed author Alyssa Cole comes the tale of a city Cinderella and her Prince Charming in disguise . . .
Between grad school and multiple jobs, Naledi Smith doesn’t have time for fairy tales…or patience for the constant e-mails claiming she’s betrothed to an African prince. Sure. Right. Delete! As a former foster kid, she’s learned that the only things she can depend on are herself and the scientific method, and a silly e-mail won’t convince her otherwise.
Prince Thabiso is the sole heir to the throne of Thesolo, shouldering the hopes of his parents and his people. At the top of their list? His marriage. Ever dutiful, he tracks down his missing betrothed. When Naledi mistakes the prince for a pauper, Thabiso can’t resist the chance to experience life—and love—without the burden of his crown.
The chemistry between them is instant and irresistible, and flirty friendship quickly evolves into passionate nights. But when the truth is revealed, can a princess in theory become a princess ever after?

Imposter Alert by Uduak Akpabio
Two women meet on a bus heading for Lagos – one to continue her poor-paying job as a prostitute, and the other to visit a long-distance boyfriend. Both women discover that they share an uncanny resemblance and become fast friends. But before the end of that day, there will be a fatal crash. One woman will die and the other – following a case of mistaken identity – will impersonate her.
Gently navigating the chasm between the lives of the oblivious rich and desperately poor, Impostor Alert! is a finely wrought tale about grief, forgiveness, and redemption.

My review of Long Shot
His Captive Princess by Kiru Taye
Isha Saene has perfected the act of balancing her life—a celebrated corporate negotiator spearheading an international trade deal that could catapult her country to one of the fastest growing mid-sized economies in Africa, and a loyal First Princess of Bagumi Kingdom set to seal ties with a neighbouring nation through marriage.
Until one careless moment knocks her carefully choreographed life into chaos.
Zain Bassong has always fought for the underdog—a patriot dedicated to fighting against the oppression of his people by the country's elite. He believes the pen is mightier than the sword and chooses the diplomatic route, no matter how many times he is arrested by the repressive regime.
Until devastating news triggers a chain reaction.
Isha and Zain are thrown together and their lives change. For better or worse? They will have to figure that out before it’s too late.

A Passionate love by Delaney Diamond
Simone Brooks and Cameron Bennett should not be together. She’s a wealthy socialite looking for a suitable husband. A man with the right pedigree and an economic status that matches her own. He’s part owner of the hottest nightclub in Atlanta with his siblings. Someone who loves cooking, the outdoors, and women, not necessarily in that order.
After one night together, their sizzling chemistry makes it difficult to stay away. Then comes the hard part—navigating their differences to salvage a relationship that, while it may be imperfect, overflows with love and passion.

The Kingmaker
Power. Passion. Betrayal.
Raised to rule, bred to lead and weaned on a diet of ruthless ambition.
In a world of haves and have nots, my family has it all, and I want nothing to do with it.
My path takes me far from home and paints me as the black sheep. At odds with my father, I'm determined to build my own empire. I have rules, but Lennix Hunter is the exception to every one of them. From the moment we meet, something sparks between us. But my family stole from hers and my father is the man she hates most. I lied to have her, and will do anything to keep her. Though she tries to hate me, too, the inexorable pull between us will not be denied.
And neither will I.

#BookReview: The Governor’s Wife by Amaka Azie

BLURB
Newly separated Ogonna Moneke has come to Abuja to open a safe house for abused women. Luck is on her side when the perfect site falls into her lap...until she learns who owns it. The chances of Philip Adamu renting to her are slim to none. Why would he when she dropped her financially struggling college sweetheart like a hot potato to marry someone else?
MY REVIEW
Philip is dumped by his sweetheart, Ogonna, after 14 years (or so) of being together. Weeks later, she’s married to a governor. Heart-broken, he moves on professionally, but his heart never heals. Skip to seven years later - Ogonna has left an abusive marriage, and her search for a piece of property for a new project brings her face to face with Philip.
Their reunion is explosive and reveals the unfinished business between them. More mature now, they are both able to get past their past. Philip and Ogonna were well-matched and I enjoyed their romance. It was nice to see a man who loved a woman because of her strong-willed nature and not in spite of it. I also enjoyed the politics and culture woven into the story.
Ogonna was admirable as a woman who had survived domestic abuse, and I would have liked to see a little more of her journey of survival and recovery. Given that the story takes place just months after her separation from her husband after 7 years of abuse, it felt like she’d either moved on too quickly or she hadn’t fully dealt with it. I kept expecting something to trigger her - just something more, which would have made her ‘rising above’ even sweeter. I also wish the story had stayed away from the crazy ex-girlfriend drama.
Overall, it was a good read.
This is a standalone sequel to The Senator's Daughter, which had Philip as a secondary character. It was nice to see him get his own HEA and also great to see some of the characters from book 1. PS. you don't need to read book 1 before delving into this one.

#BookReview: Love’s Legacy by Feyi Aina
Anjola's boyfriend, Jimi, dies unexpectedly during their NYSC year. When his mother comes for the body, she warns Anjola not to darken the doorstep of their family house with a pregnancy she is not even sure is her son's own.
After parents throw her out of the house, Anjola is determined to raise her daughter, Simisola, by herself. She does so for five years, till one of Jimi's brothers tracks her down. He convinces her to bring Simisola to meet their family.
Anjola is unsure what Jimi's mothers reaction will be, especially when the unofficial head of the family, Folarin, Jimi's older brother, hates her guts on sight.
My ReviewThe story starts with a scene where a pregnant Anjola is rejected by the mother of her unborn child’s father, who has recently died. Jump to five years later. Anjola has raised her daughter on her own when she’s found by her baby daddy’s family who now want to be involved in her daughter’s life. Naturally, she’s anxious and angry, but eventually agrees to let her daughter meet her other family. She unexpectedly finds herself attracted to here dead baby daddy’s older brother, Folarin, who hates her on sight.
There were cultural issues that added a nice flavour to the story. However, there were also a number of things I couldn’t get past. Particularly the subject of sexual abuse, which I felt could have been handled better.
I would also have liked to see more passion and fire from the heroine. After all she'd been though, being rejected on both sides, she came off as a little too passive.
Overall, I found the story and characters to be interesting, and would definitely want to read another book by Feyi Aina.

#BookReview: The Lekki Club by L. Leigh

Remi Olapade is a Nigerian bachelor enjoying his time mingling with his multiple casual hookups, after the unfortunate end of his engagement to the society girl Janet.
An unexpected invitation to the ultra-secretive ‘Lekki Club’ leads him to a summons to Room 3, where he meets the mysterious Mistress Eve.
Eve strips and chips away at the walls Remi has put up to fool others. Slowly she gets him to admit who he truly is and embrace what he truly wants.
Can Remi be brave enough to accept what he has been hiding from his previous sexual relationships? Can he convince Mistress Eve to leave Room 3 and take their relationship into the real world?
Is Remi ready to stop pretending and give up his other women for her?
If you enjoy sizzling sex scenes, raw emotions and bondage, then The Lekki Club is for you.
The Lekki Club is an erotic story of love, loss, the supernatural, life changing mistakes, and redemption.
MY REVIEWTwo things drew me to this book - the idea of a BDSM club and a male submissive looking for a mistress in a West African setting. Ms Leigh handled this so well, I found myself engrossed in Remi’s, journey from desire to pursuance and acceptance.
I normally shy away from BDSM romance, but the sex scenes in this story were handled exquisitely.
For the first half of the story, this book had me engrossed and was gearing up to be my second favourite book of 2019. Unfortunately, the second half of the story brought it down several notches with Nollywood-esque drama that really didn’t add to the romance for me.
That’s just me, though. If you love Nigerian movies and over-the-top drama with a bit of spirituality thrown in - and let's not forget the sizzling sex scenes - then you’ll love this book. I certainly plan on checking out other books by L. Leigh.

#BookReview: Miss Kane’s Christmas by Caroline Mickelson

Posing as Miss Kane, the children's new nanny, Carol pulls out all the stops to show Ben how fun Christmas can be, all the while struggling to understand how one man could hate the holidays so much. How could she, Santa's only daughter, be so attracted to a man who refuses to believe her father exists?
MY REVIEW
I enjoyed this story about Santa’s daughter, Carol Claus aka Kandy Kane being sent to help save Christmas by making a believer out of a man who doesn’t believe in Santa. I had a good laugh at the hero’s expense as Carol literally brings Christmas into his life.If you’re looking for a short and sweet holidays romance, this might just do the trick.

#BookReview: Not Broken by Meka James

Blurb
They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger...
Calida Jokobi doesn’t see it that way. Surviving an abusive relationship with a sadistic, manipulative man changed her. She has spent the last two years carefully constructing her new persona with two goals in mind: to keep the remaining pieces of her heart safe and her deepest secrets buried. One man puts it all at risk.
Malcolm has been a part of Calida’s life for as long as she can remember. A friend. Her first teenage crush. Now he's asking for something she swore she'd never give again: her heart.
Calida must decide if she should risk the fragile façade she’s created and give Malcolm the chance he’s asking for.
They say love can heal all wounds…
Malcolm Frankel wants to prove to Calida it’s true. She survived a hell most people couldn’t fathom. He’s been by her side fulfilling whatever role she needs him to play. All except the one he wants most. It took nearly losing her to make Malcolm realize he couldn’t keep denying his feelings.
He knows no one goes through an ordeal like that and comes out unscathed, but the closer they get, the more he learns just how deep Calida’s wounds go.
She’s the only woman he’s ever loved, and Malcolm is ready to put his own heart at risk for a chance at mending hers.
My Review
Two years after surviving an abusive marriage, Calida is still a mental prisoner to her past. However, her best friend's brother, Malcolm, who has been by her side all this time, is determined to show her the kind of unconditional love she deserves.
From the very first page of the book, I found myself engrossed with Malcolm and a grand gesture he makes to get Calida to see him as more than just a friend and with Calida who hints at the darkness that still lies within her. I was drawn in by Calida's story and the sheer force of Malcolm's love. He is the kind of guy you read about and wish he were real. There is a cast of secondary characters in the form of their families whose mix of personalities added an extra layer of reality to the story. Calida's 1-year-old child had me giggling and remembering my experience with raising toddlers. One of my favourite characters is Calida's sister who I hope gets a story at some point.
The one thing missing for me was a question that never got answered. As the blurb says, Malcolm was Calida's first crush, and Malcolm seems to have been in love with her for a long time. Given this, I didn't get how they never got together before. It would have been nice to see that aspect of the story.
The sex scenes were hot! At the end of the story, we see a positive transformation in both her and Malcolm. I thoroughly enjoyed Calida's journey of healing, learning to love again and accepting that she deserves love.
It's been a while since I read a book I didn't want to put down. This story was a good balance of emotion, humour, and spice. I definitely recommend it.
My rating: 4 to 4.5 stars

#BookReview: The Undercover Billionaire by Sandra Becker

"Kept me on the edge of my seat." - Pat W
"Sweet, sweet story. Loved the characters... Can't get enough of sweet, clean romances." - Jo Ann Thompson
"Original and super fun to read. I highly recommend picking out your favorite bottle of wine and curling up with this one!" - Hanna M
Billionaire Damien Randall and his friend are on vacation aboard a luxury cruise ship. When Damien asserts his arrogant ‘can-do-everything’ attitude in front of his friend, his exasperated friend dares him to a challenge.
The bet: Pinch a crew uniform and become a crew member for a day.
The stakes: One million dollars.
Damien knows better than to succumb to the challenge, but his elephant-sized ego wants to put his friend in his place and so he agrees. The only problem standing in his way: Kelly.
Kelly Messina is the new Chief Steward aboard the ship. On her first day at the job, she wants to stamp her authority and discipline on the housekeeping staff.
And what better way to do it than to give an earful to a sloppy and incompetent Damien?
Will Damien be able to survive an entire day working under the harridan Kelly?
And what will happen when Kelly finds out that the person she was bossing around is rich enough to buy the entire ship?
This is a standalone clean billionaire romance with no cliffhangers and a happily ever after perfect for fans of Jenny Colgan, Nancy Thayer, Elin Hilderbrand, Susan Wiggs, Brenda Novak, etc.
This book is a perfect way to immerse yourself in a cruise vacation enjoying the sights from Rome to Venice with an adorable love story that will give you a warm and fuzzy feeling.
My ReviewDamien is young, rich and fool of himself. Tired of his arrogance, his best friend challenges him to live as a crew member on his (friend’s) ship. With One million dollars at stake, Damien can’t resist. Life as a servant sees him becoming a subordinate to the most beautiful woman he’s ever met. Unfortunately, he can’t rely on his money, and his usual charms don’t work when he finds himself struggling with his new job and unable to impress his new boss.
This is a sweet romance that takes place over the course of a few days, so the fact that they don’t have sex works well for the story.
Recommended for those who like sweet romance.

Ambition. Revenge. Love.

RITA® Award-winning author Kennedy Ryan delivers the gripping conclusion to the All the King’s Men Duet.Raised to resist. Bred to fight. Survival is in my blood and surrender is never an option.Though surrender is what Maxim Cade demanded of my body and heart, I had other plans. We were fast-burning fascination and combustible chemistry, but the man I trusted with everything was a trickster. A thief who stole my love. If what we had was a lie, why did it feel so real? The man I swore to hate will have it all, and wants me at his side. But power is a game, and we’re the pawns and players.Facing insurmountable odds, will we win the world, or will we lose it all?

“Aw, hell.” I pull my jacket up on my elbows to provide some shelter for the two of us, but the rain trebles, more coming down and faster.
“We still have four blocks before my place,” I say. “Sorry, but the weather is unpredictable this time of year.”
Rain has already started molding the thin dress to her body, faithfully hugging every swell and curve. A hard shiver runs through her and her teeth chatter.
“Come on.” I grab her hand and duck into an alleyway. An overhang provides a tiny patch of dry ground and shelter. “We may be able to wait it out. These showers sprout up and pass over like they never happened.”
We’re sandwiched between two buildings and there is barely any light, but the moonlight finds her, sculpting shadows beneath her cheekbones and etching dark crescents of her lowered lashes. The rain has smeared her mascara, and water-slicked hair flattens to her head. She should look bedraggled, but she manages to be the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen.
I bend, tentative at first, even after last night. Even after making love to her again this morning when I chased her up the stairs. I approach slowly, giving her the chance to refuse, but she doesn’t. She meets me, eyes open, lips eager, hands bunched in my wet hair. It’s a freshwater kiss, made of rain and passion. Slow touches pick up steam until we’re frantic against the wall, hands searching, desperate to find the flesh under our soaked clothes. The inside of her thigh is slick with rain, and I trace the droplets with my finger before inching higher and burrowing beneath her panties, inside.
“Do that, Doc,” she says, a breath-starved command. “Yes.”
I lean into the damp, scented curve of her neck, leaving kisses there while my finger is knuckle-deep in paradise. Every sound she makes gets me harder, ready. She kisses my jaw, my cheekbone, pulls my bottom lip between hers.
“We should stop,” I pant across her mouth. “I can’t . . . let’s stop before . . .” How do I tell her that if we don’t, I’ll be fucking her in an alley with no regard for who might see? How do I say that without sounding disrespectful and selfish?
“Don’t stop.” She fumbles at my waist, tugging the belt from its buckle and pulling the button loose, the zipper down. “Do it.”
“Baby.” I drop my head back and groan. So tempting. I want to so badly. “The rain should let up soon. We can make a dash for it to my house.”
“Or,” she says, working her hand into my pants; finding me. Squeezing me.
“Dammit, Nix,” I groan. “Don’t make me want you any more than I already do.”
“Or,” she says again, “you can do what we both want. Take what I want to give. Right here. Right now.”
Is it surrender when you both want it? I’m not sure if it’s her will or mine that wins out, but I hitch her up, my hands full of her ass, and lock her legs at my back. I reach between us to push her panties aside and plunge in.
I feel like a god.
Yet every time she gasps and groans and tightens around my body, she conquerors me. She’s indelible. I may end up with someone else, may even love someone someday, but there is a place Lennix Moon has carved out inside of me in a matter of a few days where only she will ever fit. It’s irrational and goes against all the rules I’ve set for myself, but she feels like mine. For the next two days, she is mine.
And then we’ll walk away.

Spotlight: Teach Me by Alexandria House | #TeachMe #AudibleOriginal #AlexandriaHouse #HonMagPR

Stable, safe, predictable - all words that aptly describe Professor Nadia Day’s life. An existence she’s carefully crafted for herself despite her unconventional upbringing and what, to her, is an unseemly past. More than anything, she wants to forget her unstable history, and the last thing she would ever do is rock the boat when it comes to her life and livelihood.
When retired football player and single dad, Nathan Moore, walks into her psychology classroom, all fine and dreadlocked, he does more than rock her boat - he rocks her world and causes her to question her buttoned-up existence.
Will the professor give in to her desires and become a student of love?
