Dr Mihaela Ulieru’s review of Blockchain Revolution

Mihaela Ulieru, PhD, the President of IMPACT Institute for the Digital Economy and Adjunct Research Professor at Carlton University, has reviewed Blockchain Revolution:

I had already read a few superb books about the Blockchain which sparked my imagination with futuristic perspectives on the revolutionary potential of this breakthrough technological platform on which the (in)famous first digital currency, Bitcoin, is still coasting. So, when Don sent me a copy of his last book, Blockchain Revolution, shortly after my article on the matter in the Top 10 was published – once my enthusiastic gratitude damped off a bit – I thought, ‘Why another one?’ What can this book say more than what my favorite ones (among which top are Vigna and Cassey “The Age of Cryptocurrency” and, Melanie Swan “Blockchain: Blueprint for a New Economy”) said already so clearly, so inspirationally, so forward looking! To make sure I can quickly grasp the novelty I decided to skip the first part and began reading from the Transformations part. And with every page my state of awe spiked up rocket style!

Book Review: ‘Blockchain Revolution’ Examines Impacts of Bitcoin

A tidal wave of unprecedented, technological advancement continues to sweep our world with blinding speed. Fueling this next stage of tech innovation is an online transactional network known as “The Blockchain,” which is the subject of the freshly-minted book, Blockchain Revolution: How the Technology Behind Bitcoin is Changing Money, Business, and the World.

Authored by Don and Alex Tapscott, a Canadian father-son duo, this 368-page page-turner skillfully captures the blockchain’s arrival as a transformative worldwide platform, offering what is arguably the first comprehensive look at the future of this emerging digital ecosystem.

Coin Toss | Will blockchain undermine or buttress state power?

Ever since the Romans established a central currency system in the third century BC, money has been controlled by the state as a tool of political power. This control was exerted by manufacturing coins, issuing currencies backed by stored gold and, eventually, through central currency reserves. In each of these phases of monetary history, the state had near universal control over money. As such, the state could tax and regulate its use and fund its own activities.

Bitcoin was imagined by an anonymous computer programmer (or group of programmers—their identity is unknown) known as Satoshi Nakamoto in an attempt to break the tie between the state and money. It was intended to be the lingua franca of the internet—a currency born of, designed for and using the attributes of the World Wide Web.

Blockchain Revolution – Don Tapscott at USI

The first generation of the digital revolution brought us the Internet of information. The second generation—powered by blockchain technology—is bringing us the Internet of value: a new, distributed platform that can help us reshape the world of business and transform the old order of human affairs for the better. Blockchain is the ingeniously simple, revolutionary protocol that allows transactions to be simultaneously anonymous and secure by maintaining a tamper-proof public ledger of value. As with major paradigm shifts which preceded it, the blockchain will create winners and losers. And while opportunities abound, the risks of disruption and dislocation must not be ignored.

The Promise of Blockchain: No Weak Links

For true believers, blockchain is akin to the early Internet: a fast-rising technology that will shake the foundations of how people, companies, industries, governments, supply chains, and, yes, robots interact.

“We have come to the conclusion, unequivocally, that blockchain is the most important invention in computer science in a generation,” said Alex Tapscott, co-author with Don Tapscott of The Blockchain Revolution: How the Technology Behind Bitcoin Is Changing Money, Business, and the World. “A lot of people assume that this technology is about changing the financial services industry; we think it’s about reinventing the economy.”

Blockchain technology creates an opportunity for female leaders

The buzz surrounding the much-anticipated book Blockchain Revolution: How the technology behind bitcoin is changing money, business, and the world co-authored by renowned media visionary Don Tapscott and his son, blockchain expert Alex Tapscott, is well founded. I was lucky to be seated at the standing-room-only Canadian book launch and presentation at Rotman School of Management recently, attended by Canada’s business elite. Much of what Don Tapscott had predicted in his 1994 book The Digital Economy had come to pass, and as such, the audience was all ears.

To understand blockchain technology, or to try to at least, is to understand the buzz. At a high level, according to the Tapscotts, the blockchain is the most important digital innovation to follow the Internet. It is the technology which underpins the digital currency bitcoin, and its disruptive capabilities are expected to be huge, impacting not only financial services, but virtually every industry, institution and even government in the world.
